I feel your frustration. Definitely more so influencers quitting veganism or rather a plant based diet. I don’t know anyone in my real life who has or would, but they aren’t just plant based posers. These influencers never promote dominion, land of hope and glory or talk about the ethics side. There seems to be a blurred line between plant based and vegan. Veganism is solely about the animals; being against animal oppression and not seeing them as commodities or food products. It should be the baseline and everything else is on us to make a conscious effort to eat healthy and buy the right products. Vegan for 10 years with a full vegan family and 2 vegan dogs, never ashamed of the word or care about trends. This is the worst injustice happening before our eyes, it’s covered up and made in a way for us to not to think about them. The animals don’t give a hoot about the excuses we give.
@VeganBeautyGirl12 күн бұрын
really appreciate this insight! i def feel like vegan influencers can feel stuck between a rock and a hard place if they're trying to push the vegan message but also attract the masses to the lifestyle. but again, this is where multiple approaches come in! i guess some accounts are there to turn you vegan, others are to help you be vegan. i generally put out inclusive content which 'inspires' people to go vegan or eat more vegan and was quite shocked earlier this year when i got some backlash for suggesting that the 'easiest way to love animals was to not eat them' - stunned that that was somehow controversial!! like what else would you expect from a vegan account???!

I also get a bit frustrated by things like the protein issue which isn’t even an issue. Or using veganism mainly for weight loss. I also don’t like the “live your own life” kind of idea if that idea is infringing on other people’s rights to live their own lives like other animals. People are so open about judging for any other thing that involves the issue of justice but when it comes to animal justice as a whole it is seen as bad to be judgmental. No one wants to be labeled as judgmental but I am also protective of the animals. With other vegans I’m better able to hear differing ideas around veganism than with non-sympathetic nonvegans, who don’t care at all I also agree that flexitarian is good for the movement. I was a flexitarian for many years as a child and teen, so when I became an adult I was able to have more freedom with my food! I definitely emphasize that the mindset of wanting to be vegan is so good no matter where you are in the journey of understanding things I’m a new subscriber so I wanted to pop in and have a comment when I saw your notification! I just can’t understand how someone can change their beliefs so drastically. To me, being vegan isn’t just about personal benefits-it's about so much more than just health. We all know the saying, but it’s true: veganism is not just a diet; it's a lifestyle. And this lifestyle is (or ideally should be) rooted in a deep desire to make the world a better place. It’s a commitment to end unnecessary suffering, to face the truth instead of hiding from it, to acknowledge the harm we've caused as a species, and to understand that the best time to make a change was yesterday. Veganism has emerged as a call to open our eyes, to live with compassion, not egoism.

You are a meat eater eating less meat than you used to… which is GREAT, but it’s also just a greenwashy label I find people hide behind to sound ethical etc. I’ve been told by several ppl after they find out I’m vegan that they’re flexitarian or “mostly vegetarian”. Nicole, we love your channel. Wife and I went PB/vegan in Aug 2023, and we are definitely not going to quit before getting to the grave 😉. I say "PB/vegan" because I personally adopt a WFPB diet for my health and environmental stewardship, and vegan because we consciously consider our choices to limit animal exploitation whenever possible. I think that veganism, as a stance rooted in compassion, is and always will appeal to only the smallest subset of human beings. I say this simply based upon a short life of observation of how we treat others within our species...a species that we consider to be higher than all others. If we, with no consideration to the harm caused, exploit other humans for our personal gain at every opportunity, it's inconceivable that compassion to "lesser" species would ever cross the average person's radar. If you want to observe a prime example of a first-world nation's capability (or lack-thereof) for compassion , look no further than the outcome of last night's election in the United States...

I think it's just a natural progression. Veganism grew slowly for decades and then experienced some much faster growth. Suddenly it's pretty easy, there's endless supermarket options and restaurant stuff. So veganism gained a lot of people who aren't necessarily about animal rights. Whatever their reasons for doing it, it was always going to mean plenty who might not stick with it. But that feels like a natural part of longer term growth. It's the same with products being withdrawn or something businesses closing. Capitalism meant they all jumped on vegan options. But even with a higher number of vegans, there wasn't room for them all to succeed. What it did mean it vegans having more choice, more quality and not having to pay over the odds anymore. So stuff like beyond burger sees sales drop simply because there's similar from every supermarket. When it comes to vegan businesses the problem is that most are small and independent. And it's just been a really rubbish time for small business. 2022 and 2023 were record years for businesses closures so they're just caught up in that. There's often a framing of declining veganism, and as much as they'd love that, it's not happening. It's grown due to readily available information on food, farming, animal treatment etc and a huge range of other options. There'll be plenty more setbacks, plenty more misinformation and stupid celebrity unveganings, but veganism isn't going anywhere.

As it is the best for environment and animal, people should think twice before saying how and why they quit. I can understand if people are struggling with it. Our society is based around this idea. But sometimes, what they say is not really clear and most of the time is more a practical reason than a total change of belief

I texted you on Instagram if you're up for that 😊 My thought about this is that I don't really care about former vegan and especially their need to extern that and to miscommunicate things. I'm Italian, been living abroad for 8 years, Malta first and now Mallorca. I've seen a growth in vegan options everywhere, from supermarkets to restaurants. What's more, in Italy the number has increased, that's been just published. I'm so glad to hear that. We're growing, even in old fashioned cultures like the Italian, where food is considered tradition and people judge you if you veganise a carbonara for example. So my opinion is that who is vegan, will remain vegan no matter what. The rest who quits wasn't really convinced or did it only as a trend.

Those who back out were never doing it for the right reasons in the first place. Regardless, there are still millions of us who are vegan today, and every day, another individual makes that transition. The one thing people need to refrain from is that it's a diet. It's not a god damn diet, and we don't need protein to be optimally healthy, but some people don't understand that because they don't do their research. It's important for the body, but it's best to get it from plants. No cap, but she just missed the taste and maybe the association. Admitting that and moving on would've been better.

I think many people just followed the trend, as when everyone was trying to be bakers and zero waste during covid, but they never truly believed in veganism. I also think that the overly fake and processed meats developed a few years ago put people off veganism in the long term as they were too reliant on these products so when they wanted to have a healthier diet, they did not know what to eat or they did not like the options. I see this a lot in hipster areas. Before you had clearly labelled vegan options everywhere and now you just find really upmarket meats and butters but nothing vegan

yes, i think you’re spot on-like any trend, some people joined the vegan movement without truly believing in it, similar to the wave of zero-waste efforts during covid. and the surge in processed vegan meats probably did have an impact; many people relied on those products without exploring whole-food options, so when they wanted to focus on health, they felt limited. v frustrating!

I don't think it's a giving up thing, I think it's a movement-defining thing. All veganity have made up their mind they are not a diet but a philosphy and it's only just dawning on some people like me who thought they were vegan, what the implications of this are. People are having widely varying reactins to it, based on wehre they are at with their health journey and social and economic situation mainly. It's just a normal cyclical shake-up, basically. I hesitate to make a prediction what is next, whether there will be another surge in dietary veganism (followed by another cyclical economically-driven die-off) or maybe if plant based will take hold but after seeing the election play out (from Aus) I'm thinking there may be a long stagnation in both movements. Which I personally find very depressing but I've been coming to terms with it.

Great video, and very well explained seeing both sides - vegans and ex vegans.. I really do believe these "ex vegans" were just wanting to follow a trend to feel part of something, as a lot of humans like to follow what they think is "cool" at the time. I've known people who were animal rights activists, and then turned their back and started slating vegans and being full carnivore. I truly believe these people are lost, need acceptance, validation, and "LIKES", and needed to fit in somewhere. It never came from the heart and was never about the animals, but their own ego and feeling like they were doing something good to feel better about themselves. If you've seen the atrocities, the pain these animals go through, and then can turn your back and support the industry who does this, then you were never ever about the animals. Vegan nearly 10 years, and would never ever in a million years turn my back on the animals. For one, the thought of eating part of a dead body makes me want to vomit, and two, we do not need to eat flesh to be healthy. It's a very brainwashed, old fashioned concept and it's all about these industries making money from people who think this is normal, as we've been bred to believe it is. It's a sad world we live in, as so many humans are very ego driven, totally self absorbed and selfish.

completely agree with you! the idea of eating meat sickens me! i wonder if there's a bunch of us that learn about what goes on in animal agriculture and get so grossed out we have to go vegan VS some people who learn, know its wrong but aren't grossed out and it's a constant battle for them? makes you wonder!

Vegetarian since 2013 and vegan since 2016. Have zero plans on giving it up. I do think a lot has to do with going vegan for reasons other than the animals. I would never even think of eating an animal product. Have a lot of medical issues and have figured out how to make veganism work for me. Because it is very important to me to stay vegan and most doctors and nutritionalists understand this. You might need to find a nutritionalist that knows about a vegan diet, but that takes a bit of a google search or to send a message to potential nutritionists first and ask them if they can work with you.

I have a medical condition where I can only eat VERY LITTLE fiber and fat. (To explain this better, 1 serving of peanut butter is about half of my TOTAL fat in a day, and I can't even eat that much in one sitting. I also have to eat very little fiber, or else vegan or vegetarian would be so much easier) But honestly, I still try to only eat little amounts of meat and dairy and eat mostly plant based as often as possible. But the thing is, while there are many people who have conditions like mine where they can not be plant based, there are more people who could eat more plant based, but due to their ego they eat more meat and dairy just to spite people who talk about eating less.

None of these are animal rights people which causes the drop off. I went vegan 20 years ago and all my ar friends went vegan from the 1980's to 2005. I honestly never hear of this happening aside from social media amongst health types and many of those seem to have a fascination with trying out different diets. I met a group of health type vegans in London years ago and heard on the grapevine that barely any of them are still vegan which isn't surprising. Two of them were Nicokado and Brianna Jackfruitson.

Those who gave up were never vegan in the first place because someone who was truly vegan would never cause animal cruelty again. Veganism is about animals rights, not a diet and certainly not a trend. Thanks for being vegan.

i appreciate there's the rare situation where people have to stop being vegan, but you can tell by the way they still talk respectfully about the diet instead of berating it for not having enough protein or whatever other trendy lie they can say.

I think do what is best for your body, I’m 90% plant based, very occasionally I will eat animal products, my diet makes me feel good, organic and home grown, feel I’m thriving. It’s an individual choice and response

honestly, i think if the world went 90% plant based it'd be a MASSIVE shift in the right direction.

It is definitely disappointing, so many people I follow have stopped being vegan over the last few years. I've been vegan for nearly 17 years and don't see that changing.

I think a lot of people are quitting one ED for another (NOT calling veganism an ED- just that it is for some people). And no matter what she says, I’m sure she is using a medication where they recommend you also eat very high protein.

I feel this way currently. I am now hyper aware of the unspeakable cruelty we humans inflict on non-humans that goes on in the world. I'm in recovery from a 12 year long battle with a restrictive ED that nearly took my life and utterly wrecked my body and cognative functioning. I'm desperate to follow the vegan way of life perfectly, and have been in transition for the past few months. But now my dietician and care providers are worried that I'm not eating enough and that when I am that I'm not getting what I need and that I risk going back into hospital. They suggested slowing down my dietary transition and go back to adding bits of fish and dairy products into my diet for now, even with all the supplemants I take. I'm so torn, I hear all sorts of things. Care providers telling me to do one thing, friends I've made in the vegan community telling me another thing. It's all so confusing. I know some say veganism isn't viable for everyone, but with the wealth of vegan products out there - there has to be a way I can ensure wellness for myself and for the animals too. 😖

@@dorianredpath4103 honestly, i recommend putting your health first and returning to veganism when you're in a better space to do so.

I don’t understand how someone can after understanding the violence towards animals and how unnecessary it is, go back to eating meat. Also, I believe that the best way to eat vegan is to eat well-balanced vegan food and make sure to supplement b12. Not by following any overly strict raw vegan food plan that I believe will eventually become unsustainable and may cause brain fog.

honestly!! i wanna know what kind of vegan diet she was on bc if she's idolising a raw alkaline vegan diet i'm a bit sceptical of how balanced her veganism was!
