Couldn't agree more with you on this. If you are at a place which has a history of a genocide the last thing you would do is kiss. This is just really weird to me and the people clapping back? Excuse me, so many people died and you find all of this romantic? Beyond me.

i’m sorry but i gotta say this somewhere. i’ve been binge watching dylan’s videos for the last week or so and just came across this. i’ve been thinking about this movie a lot for the last week, coincidentally. my ex bf who is now my best friend is also an osteosarcoma survivor with one leg. i can’t bear to watch this movie again after all these years as we just found out his cancer is back. on friday they’ll remove 6 tumors from his lungs before starting chemo the following week. maybe i shouldn’t comment as i haven’t watched this video and i won’t, but i’ve been thinking about it so much and this seems like an okay place to say what i’ve been thinking. i have to say that from what i remember they nailed the time gus had alive after finding out he was sick. the scene at the gas station keeps replaying in my head, gus repeating ‘just let me die’ in his car...i can’t stop picturing my best friend saying it. i can’t stop thinking about hazel’s phone ringing in the middle of the night, and how mine will sound, and when it will be. i picture my roommates looking at each other with no clue what to do when i get it. maybe i’ll run to my car and drive off and grieve in an empty parking lot so they won’t have to see. who knows. maybe he’ll survive again. but if you know anything about osteosarcoma, you know his odds aren’t fantastic. i’m sorry for the novel. idk if i believe in a god but to anyone who does...please please pray for him. edit: thank y’all for the kind words. he miraculously lived for two more weeks after the surgery. he died on august 16th, 2020 at 21. edit 2: it’s been over 2 years since he died and i still get responses on this so i just wanna give a general life update. after he died i was not okay for a long time. i couldn’t function. absolutely everything hurt. i had no one that really cared about me, no one i could show how much pain i was really in to. and then, in february of 2021 i met my best friend. my platonic soulmate. the kind of person that reminds you how good life can be, how good you can be. he’s helped me become a whole person. i’m happy. i love the people in my life, i love myself, and as much as i miss brendan, i’ve only had a few days in the last year when the grief was crushing. it’s true that time heals. thank you for all your kind words. to this day, those comments mean the world. love all you troublemakers:)

15:58 This is the advantage visual readers have. We *see* pictures like movies in our minds as we read instead of just the word "smile" we can SEE the character smiling. Their appearance might not be similar to how someone else visualizes them but its the same concept of picturing the words instead of just... words on paper. Reading Percy Jackson....phew man that was something else. I love that series.
@tluvsbeauty13 жыл бұрын
Wait... I thought everyone experienced books like this... do most people not see things when reading? When I read, I barely notice the words at all. It is like an internal, and very long, movie. (Also, my gosh i could not agree more about the Percy Jackson novels. They were so amazing to read!)
@zoereimers54543 жыл бұрын
@@tluvsbeauty1 not everyone can see what they read in their mind, but most people can… I cant i see nothing. But its not just while reading a book, my mind is always blank. I have aphantasia. Because of that i am not a Fan of books that are very very descriptiv, since i will never see it unless they make a movie of it. I for example know what my mother looks like, but if you ask me know i can only tell very vague and basic things about her. I would be the worst eye witness.

@moirarusaw95672 жыл бұрын

I always thought that she died at the end like the girl in the fake book
@LoraK315 жыл бұрын
Actually that tweet was fake! One of the big points of TFiOS was that authors shouldn't have a say in what happens to their characters after the book ends and John Green believes that too.

AHAHAHA VERY TRUE .... Americans (or some westerners(?) )are lucky that their seasons are like less than 20 episodes cause if a telenovela lasted only 20 eps that wouldn’t even last a month but an upside is we get a new episode every day mean while they get to re watch their shows we won’t cause it’s in the tv and it’s daily

He's so opinionated, which I both love and hate at times, because I'm the same, I guess. There's so many times I want to say no, no, no...this is why this happened, or pay attention to that, to him. But I also applauded mentally so many times through some of these videos. That's why I find him so fascinating, he speaks his mind so assertively, and confidently. One's got to admire that.

Fun fact: my “the fault in our stars” copy has over 100 sticky notes in pages to capture moments and quotes that I just had to write down because of how emotional I was and much I loved it. This book is one of my favorites for the fact that it’s so hard to read and it seems hopeless, however there’s so much inspiration in it. And you get so much out of it as a reader. John Green is amazing at touching the reader’s heart.

Okay but I think the shot you criticized about "not being inspiring" is the point of the shot... she's not inspired. Hazel at that point, is not (at least in the movie) inspired by life. She knows she's on the finish line, and that's it for her. She's accepted it. One thing I remember that she "doesn't like" (but ends up liking) about Augustus is how stupidly optimistic he is. Also again, if I remember correctly, Hazel hated the group therapy at that point, she didn't want to be part of it especially if she was about to die. So in this state of mind she's in, the shot makes sense. The "neutrality" of it all makes sense, it tells us about Hazel's mind just as much as what she says on that scene. It's not aesthetically pleasing because Hazel doesn't think that life is aesthetically pleasing. Hence the opposition with Augustus when he says "I like to look at beautiful people": he sees beauty in the world. And in life. And the opposite of that is oblivion and void, which is basically what Hazel is at that point: she's gonna die, she accepted it and that's it the end. And as seen during the scene where you fangirl, where EVERYTHING is opposed to Hazel's speech on oblivion at the beginning of the movie: here, the light is warm and yellow, and there's music and soft close-ups on the characters and suddenly oblivion is not the only thing there is.

Okay so I found Dylan a couple of weeks ago and am now slowly making my way through the backlog of his vids. And I gotta say this is the first vid where I have actually seen him genuinely affected by the emotion and writing of the movie and it was strangely heart warming to see a more human and romantic side of him rather than the endless (but entertaining) ripping of the movies content. 2020 Dylan if you see this don't be afraid to do some movie commentary of some really good films that left an impression on you, I'm sure I'm not the only one who was left with a more wholesome view of who you are outside of KZbin after this. (Also props for not bringing gender into your review aka this book and movie is only for teen girls).

25:40 I just realized that maybe they made the shot still as it was fading in to refer to the "the fault in our stars" thing. since Hazel is leaving Augustus' funeral and THAT is the fault in their stars. I mean, I vaguely remember but if I'm not wrong, in the book there's something about two men talking about how people like to blame their misery on their stars (their fate or destiny) when in reality they CHOOSE their destiny, their actions have consequences and everything bad that happens to you isn't "fate" or meant to be, you do it to yourself. But with Hazel and Gus it's not like that because they really wanted to be happy and together but then they couldn't be bc Augustus died, and it wasn't their fault, they didn't choose to be sick.
