People really don’t understand this underrated gem. The whole point of the show is that just because you lose weight, it doesn’t mean you are automatically a better person. This show illustrates that with dark comedy and satirical jokes, and all the characters are cliches, no one is meant to be likeable/ relatable . But it also has really good messages at times, like dealing with eating disorders, sexuality, exploring oneself. Every one criticizes it for how “ridiculous” it is, but that’s the point. It does a good job of showing how the main character Patty, is her own worse enemy to the point where she becomes irredeemable at the end of the show. I was on the edge of my seat every episode and I found it entertaining just because of how wild some of the plots were. I just find it silly that people think this show is fatphobic, when it’s literally the opposite, and also get offended by some of the jokes that are clearly satire and meant to make fun of people who say things like that. Like that one thing Bob Barnard said about bisexuals not actually existing, it’s ridiculous because it’s not true, it’s just there to poke fun of people who believe that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the point of the show went over your head, it’s not supposed to be a serious drama.
@monsterhanna6691 Жыл бұрын
That doesn't make it good or okay. It's also making fun of things that should never be made fun of in the first place, like rape, incest, murder etc.

And to the person who called me a "retarded whore", all of Dylan's points are very valid, especially seeing as this show is rated one of Netflix's worst shows....ever. You really don't need to see episodes 2-11 to know it doesn't get better at all. It doesn't achieve what it actually wants to achieve as a show, so it fails. But keep calling people you don't know names because you're angry over nothing, that just makes you look bad, not me.

This is 2 years too late for anyone to see it, but no one calls it "anal" cancer. It's called rectal cancer. My mom had it and died from it metastisizing. It's often combined to say colorectal cancer, for the colon and the rectum. Colorectal cancer is actually the second deadliest cancer, for large part in the shaming and jokes that movies like this make about it. It's a brutal horrid disease that I wouldn't wish on anyone. If you have any issues with your colon or rectum, like weird poops, please don't be ashamed to see your doctor! It can be very treatable if caught early. Also get regular colonoscopies way earlier than is recommended. It was estimated that my mom had developed rectal cancer in her mid thirties, when organisations tell you you don't need to start getting colonoscopies until your 50s. Please don't be ashamed of looking after your health! Ok I'll get off my soapbox now.

They really should have taken it more seriously. I will never understand why people joke about diseases that literally kill people
@piperalyssa Жыл бұрын
Yes, this was my thought too. I have ulcerative colitis, which is a form of IBD. Which puts me at a higher risk of getting colorectal cancer at some point in my life. These diseases are so brutal and the way that TV shows and movies use it as a cheap joke really hurts. To some extent, you do have to be able to find a sense of humor in living with it. But the embarrassment and shame that I felt when I was diagnosed as a teenager led me to literally not tell any of my friends for like three years. I think I would have been more open about talking about it earlier if I didn't associate it so strongly with something people laughed at. I'm sorry your mom had it, and I hope that the two years since you wrote your comment has been kind to you.

All these people in the comments complaining that he didn't watch the whole thing and that "it gets so much better!!1! you didn't give it a chance!" but like do yall realize that the show is supposed to be good enough within the first few episodes to make people want to keep watching... if the first few episodes are terrible, it doesn't matter how "incredible" the later ones are, its the job of the people who made the show to make people want to watch the whole thing. The show is a bad show if it turns people away. And it's simply not funny either? Like ya everyone knows it's supposed to be satire and to be full of dark humour but a lot of people like me who have very dark humour don't find it funny at all. I make jokes about pretty much everything, I have quite an offensive sense of humour, but everything in this show felt really forced and they were trying way too hard to be edgy. If a person or a show naturally has that edge to it then it works, but when every other line has something put in just for shock factor then it doesn't make it funny anymore. There's a right way and a wrong way to go about doing a show like this and the people who made this one did it all completely wrong, it's not funny and it doesn't work. Not to mention the acting is awful so you can't even really laugh at how bad it is, it's just bad. People hate that other people have different opinions, a lot of people think this show is garbage and you can like it if you want but the rest of us will keep saying it's fucking garbage whether you like it or not.

I think this show is brilliant. It's hyperbolic and campy which keeps it fun and light, but its core message is genuine. It flips that stereotypical script where a fat girl becomes hot and then everything in her life gets better with a perfect happy ending. The message in this is so much richer: changing the outside does nothing to solve Patty's problems. In fact, if anything she finds that pretty privilege enables her to go deeper down a path of destruction because people assume the best of her, when she is actually terrible. And I get why Dylan couldn't relate the the characters, but as someone who was a teenage girl once, I found the themes incredibly relatable: having crushes on older men, exploring sexuality, eating disorders, dysfunctional parents, bullying and popularity, even the curiousity around witchcraft felt relatable!

As somebody who has been fat since they were five years old, I actually really enjoy the show. The first couple of episodes are...rough, at some points. It seems like they thought offensive humor was the way to go. And then the tone...kind of shifts? Almost like there were different showrunners behind them or something. I think it tackles a lot of issues, some more bluntly than others. It sounds pathetic but when you're fat your whole life, anybody who pays you a compliment suddenly becomes a new love interest that you're head-over-heels for. Especially when you're a teenager. Seriously--it's pretty common for us what with the low sense of self and all of that. So Patty pretty much falling for Bob like that felt...familiar, in a way. I mean, who hasn't had a crush on an adult when they're a teenager? Whoever says they never did is either asexual or lying to your face. I feel like as the show goes on, you learn the psychology about not only Patty but the other characters too, no matter how minor they are. You learn why they are the way they are, why they make the decisions they make. It's a great show, in my opinion. Perfect? God, no. Those first couple of episodes had some seriously gross lines. But I think it's a lot better than people make it out to be in its entirety. I feel people who are attacking it so harshly are either judging it by its trailer (the trailer wasn't that bad either idk why the fuck people were flipping out) or they went into the show wanting to hate everything about it and stopped after twenty minutes so they could go rant on their blog about it in order to feel validation. While the first couple of episodes deserve a D+, I give the season as a whole a B+.

I just wanted to say: I disagree with the part about a teenager having a crush on an adult is 100% common. Neither me nor any of my friends (i checked, and we've told each other worse secrets) have had a crush on an edult, ever. We've idolised celebrities and stuff, but never actually willing to have sex with them. So,.. Idk, maybe some do experience it, but it shouldn't be "normal"
@LoungingPotato6 жыл бұрын
TheInklet I mean, I never mentioned anything about sex. I literally just said the crush thing. So you nor your friends ever thought a teacher or neighbor or older stranger you saw on the street was attractive? And even with the crush, celebrities definitely count. You fantasize about being with them and that's exactly what Patty is doing. She idolizes Bob, puts him on a pedestal, and makes up a narrative in her head about a potential future that would never actually happen. It's still incredibly common whether you have experienced or not.
@inkbery44736 жыл бұрын
Ritchie 1) crushes =/= thinking someone is attractive. Crushes mean craving a romantic relationship and wanting to hold hands and kiss. 2) crushes =/= idolizing someone. Again, literally none of my friends nor I want to have a relationship with a celebrity. Like, we've had a prolonged discussion about it once in a free class, example: I love love love Harry Styles, but if he asked me out for example, I'd definitely 100% say no, because I would never see him that way. Patty literally implied she'd be up for sex/ a relationship w/ bob. So no, idolizing someone isn't having a crush. I idolise my mom and dad, I idolise my aunt and my cousin. That's not having a crush. And neither is thinking someone is attractive. Thinking an art piece in the gallery looks nice is different from trying to buy it to hang on your wall. So, yeah.

For example, Bob having to bail out Patty every time she murdered someone. The cartoonishly villainous mother-daughter duo who openly talked about how they love scheming against people. Patty's entire arc being based on an unrealistic amount of luck which helped her through every situation she put herself in the first place.

yah literally the reason I like this show is because it throws the traditional redemption story to the wind and legit makes the protagonist a psychopath who turns out to be the antagonist. plus, the mom is supposed to be horrible that’s her character lol anyway you just have to get through to the end for the payoff
@crispy_touya3 жыл бұрын
That’s not what an antagonist is. Antagonist doesn’t mean evil.

This show isn’t suppose to be taken serious okay. Like it’s suppose to be taken with a light heart and it’s just a big joke. And I love it

The title of the show literally spells out the message: Patty can't find satisfaction in anything she has or does. At her core, she'll always be unsatisfied with herself b/c she's such a b*tch to everyone b/c she's afraid to be vulnerable.

Same it was so perfectly camp, and honestly the food disorder and psychological metaphors are on point. People had to make it all serious and ruin season 3.

@miriahherzog8326 THIS!! I have had body image issues and disordered food relationships before (mine was restricting instead of binging) and it was still the most accurate depiction I have seen. Hit all the points without inspiring any of her unhealthy behaviours in the viewers, very rare for any media about EDs.
@miriahherzog8326 Жыл бұрын
@SoVidushi Definitely and it was very clear that the viewer isn't meant to agree with body shaming. The show literally shows that no matter how much she weighs, she has always been broken and selfish . Or to support patties bad decisions. I really love that her friend accepts it was her fault for going to the jail even though she was helping she admitted it was her decision in the end . I didn't feel like show was encouraging murder or Ed. And I felt like the jokes were so unappreciated here that people just didn't get it .
