Well, actually, in Indonesia, there has been frequent discussion about the exchange rate of the rupiah against other currencies. The most talked-about aspect is the denomination of the rupiah, removing 3 zeros. Where Rp100,000 becomes Rp100. Many citizens agree, but the government seems to be very cautious, weighing the pros and cons before making such a decision. Conditions such as economic stability, inflation, information dissemination, etc., are considered factors in their deliberation.

I think Indonesia's weak money is intentional; starting with the increase in population, it automatically has to print more money, but productivity is low (not as advanced as in Indian, Chinese, or American industries). With a low rupiah, foreigners can rob anything and get large sums. You can vacation in a luxury hotel in Bali, but local workers can't possibly go abroad unless they save a few months or years. There is no equality of money; this is very detrimental to us. Just imagine that many people earn less than 312 USD per month. They can live because food is affordable, but to own a house, travel abroad, have a car, or have sophisticated gadgets, they have to save for a very long time.

It's just the number of zeros that make it look bad, I think other factors such as purchasing power parity and inflation rates, are more important than the nominal exchange rate. For example, 1 USD is equivalent to 109 Bangladesh Taka and 144 Japan Yen, but this doesn't necessarily mean that the Japanese currency is weaker than the Bangladeshi one.

Nope. There's a plan to redenominate/decrease the number of zeros, but it doesn't affect its value. It's similar to using different names for the currency, like 1,000 rupiah becoming 1 New Rupiah. The current exchange rate : 1 USD = 15.500 Rupiah 1 USD = 110 Taka Bangladesh But as we all know, Indonesian currency and economy is much stronger than Bangladesh one.

"Locally made" (TKDN) is mostly just a lip services. It's often hard to track, and companies can easily have their way around it by by changing the component/work cost. Also does not help that Indonesia's business is owned by either foreign based and foreign owned company. The primary reason why Rupiah still on downward trend for decades (decades, mind you) is because we're bleeding money to foreign overlord that actually owns this country.

Thats not the point, the point is the value, lets take some example, in American, lets just say price for one burger is $5, its cheap, now lets convert it to Indonesia currency, one burger is Rp75.000, its so expensive just for one burger... Rp value is really weak and cheap compared to $ Edit : "Burger" here is just *example,* stop talking like its the main point, you can literally change the example to anything and its would works the same. The currency value or exchange rate is one of the most important determinants of a country's relative level of economic health. Its play a vital role in a country's level of trade, which is critical to most every free market economy in the world. One of the example of why currency value matter is that higher-valued currency makes a country's imports less expensive and its exports more expensive in global or foreign markets

The high cost of imported products makes domestic businesses grow, especially in textiles. because people tend to realize that the quality of Indonesian textile products is the same as foreign textile brands because they make them in Indonesia. the problem is a matter of technology, if Indonesia can become independent like China, the problem of imports which have high costs will be a gust of wind and we just need to focus on exporting our quality products at low prices, and shifting brands in the country concerned to dominate the market.

Since 1998, I remembered IDR went from 2000 /usd to around 10000 / usd. Then in around 2007 it became around 7000 / usd , now it becomes around 15000/ usd. But, the most important thing, is for IDR to be stable

I'm Italian but I live and work in Indonesia since 2008, first as an expat and now as a business owner. 90% of my company cash reserves are in very liquid hard assets priced in USD because I believe Indonesian Rupiah is set to go to zero like all other fiat currencies around the world. Governments will never cut their expenditures and government income from taxes, although they keep increasing them year after year, will never offset the huge and growing government debt so there are only 2 options left on the table: government default or printing more money. You guess which one is the most likely outcome...

To be fair no one really cares about the last 3 digits of the rupiah in indonesia and the last 3 digits is kind of like cents in terms of dollars. The lowest denomination in our currency is 100 rupiah, which is a coin that I think no longer is distributed by the government, but is still in circulation, we used to have 50 rupiah but its very rare nowadays that I think it can fetch up a good price if its still in a pristine condition for collectors, we also have 200 rupiah and 500 rupiah denominations for our coins, while for 1,000 it has both coins and banknotes version. Then the bank notes goes up to 2,000; 5,000; 10,000; 20,000; 50,000; and 100,000. But to sum it up for the foreign tourists who goes to Indonesia and for easier conversion, just get rid the last 3 digit of the money and treat them as 1 dollar, 2 dollar, 5 dollar, 10 dollar, 20 dollar, etc. So if we use this logic we can just make the conversion of IDR to USD as 15:1 ratio (rounded, for estimations for ease of use by tourists, but should not be used for more precise economic estimation), which is still relatively weak in foreign exchange. Which actually not so bad that it could cause drastic domestic inflation, in fact inflation in Indonesia has been very stable in the recent decades after the crisis cause even slightly higher than 5% of inflation the country will be up in arms (literally can make the government scared cause it literally toppled a regime before), so all the governments always agree prioritising stability of market prices is important even if they came from different party.

This happened because of two things. The old time money printing at '60-ies, and the monetary crisis at '97. These two making the currency stockpiles overflown. After that, we really try to stabilize everything. One generation later, we kinda learn the lessons. One of the lowest inflation in pandemic. With top 10 GDP per PPP. But monetary is different than economy. The multiple zeroes is till there because the amount of currency is still gathering dust inside the country. We got okay-ish economy, good performing trades, but still with so many zeroes on the bill. Its kinda impossible to make Rupiah become international reserves, while Dollar and Yuan try to take the throne. The only way is to use denomination, cut the zeroes in bills and prices.

Corruption already under control, and for a gigantic archipelago country with 285 million people like Indonesia its already become massive work to curb it down to a controllable level. I'm an Indonesian. I make about USD 350 monthly. If you live in rural areas (like I do) with poor infrastructure, when you need to go from point A to B for pretty long distance every day, however, a car would surely be a nice addition. But that's about it. No house, no car, no marriage for us. Conversion ratio USD to IDR is 1 to 15. Three zeroes mean nothing. You cannot buy anything less than IDR 1000 anyway, the same with $1. But 1 to 15 conversion ratio is still too high to use.

I always thought that indonesia is great. having all resource other nations jealous of but we lack on infrastructures & policies. The root is the corrupt individuals. Imagine this, our nations making an big advancement plan of infrastructure but corruptions not only conducted by goverment officials but also on private sector, so we have bad construction or a fail project. Next one is policies, "having weak currency means higher export" but the cost to export are high because we have to count bribe cost or unmoved inventory loses (if choose not to bribe). We have so many goverment officials living like influencer that flaunt money & properties everywhere, while we know their monthly income are standarized, so where did they get all those money. It's so regretfull that i don't think indonesia will have some impacts at this era. At least it's not as bad as china i think.

In my opinion the weak rupiah can be one of Indonesia’s great assets. Rupiah being weak means it lowers the financial barrier to entry for foreign investment into Indonesia as it is much cheaper for countries with more valuable currency (r: $, €, £) to invest in countries like Indonesia as compared to countries like Singapore where the currency is strong. That’s why many FI into Indonesia is more secondary industry heavy as these industries take advantage of Indonesia’s relatively cheap labour and low capital needed to invest in the machinery needed for manufacturing.
