KZbin is also heading the same way to a lesser extent, methinks. I get very small channels recommended to me constantly nowadays.

I think i kind of liked that Reels imported a lot the TikTok videos later. Mainly becasue i don't want a Tiktok, so it's kind of nice that the quality TikTok stuff makes its way to Reels where more people can interact with it later and enjoy it without having to get a whole new app they might not want.

12:36 (reason kids are on the app even though technically they shouldn't be) i think the reason they're on there is pretty much basic kid behavior. a friend or other people in their lives showed them a brief glimpse of it and they loved the bits they saw and they just want to get in on the action. the site and adult say they're too young, but don't want to let that stop them. so either they get their parents to make them an account so they can look around for themselves and do stuff on there. or the 2nd option that I think could be more likely, they could just lie about their ages and say they're a few years older when they're not. And just sort of cyber sneak on there to get on and have a look around and interact and do stuff on the app. some might be better at hiding the whole age thing more than others and might not get caught. and some keep their cool and actually behave alright and maybe make whatever adjustments after the fact when they're finally old enough to be on the app even though they were on there before they should have been. but it's way after the fact and they already have following and maybe have some stable sense of balance or something with an audience or something. ...i've no idea if this last idea is a viable and actually happens but no one will talk about due to the basic rule of snitches and all that. and this is something that has been the case for years but has never been outright actually said or confirmed for fear of ruining it for everyone else that is making it work and not getting in trouble or something. 🤔🤷♂

did a deep dive myself into the different types of unhinged musicians on reels and tried to put them in different buckets. it’s a crazy little pocket of the internet!

agreed on the emphasis on the bullying. the allure of commenting similar ‘mean but funny’ comment formats + mosseri saying shares are the biggest metric on what gets pushed out is definitely a huge factor on why we keep seeing this kind of stuff on our feed great vid love the insight

Literally the exact opposite experience on Reels for me. The content is tailored with only minor deviation. Tiktok, on the other hand, seems determined to show me content unrelated to what I follow or like.

the mention of the "sense of discovery" is such good insight! it really does heavily trigger that sense!

I do think they're being very successful in becoming this creator oriented platform and they kept the social aspect with improved messaging and stories taking the place of friend posts. However I feel it's still in an uneasy post. There's really nowhere to post now for friends-family acquaintances per say. Sure Instagram has stories and added more privacy options, but it's kinda lost its way in this sense.

13:58 (don't want to do anything about it) maybe it's becasue the kids and bullying part has gotten bigger than they expected like they never thought about kids being on the app when they originally created Instagram, so they never considered building in safety protocols. and this is a lot of scrambling after the fact kind of fixing and ductape stuff. 🤷♂

the way the algorithm reacts to behaviour in such a quick and obvious way makes it feel like a "vibes-based" search engine. I can find specifically what I want by incrementally choosing to spend more time interacting with certain posts
