The relationship between the United Kingdom and Ireland has always been a difficult one, today we see this with the Irish Boarder being the sticking point for Brexit negotiations. But, the history of this relationship goes much further back. Indeed for 800 years the English held control of the island of Ireland. Let’s look at this history and answer the question of why Ireland is not part of the United Kingdom?

This video while in general very informative, gives 2 incorrect perceptions. 1.) It gives the impression that all the people of the 6 counties support the UK and that it is only angry Irishmen from the ROI that want a UI. Which is untrue, the Republican community in the 6 counties is massive, with Sinn Féin coming within 1 seat of becoming the largest party. 2.) The video give the impression that the IRA just emerged from the shadows to start the troubles, without giving any context as to what was happening in the 6 counties. The Nationalist community within the 6 counties were treated as second class citizens by Orange Stormont, being discriminated against in every aspect of life, such as employment, policing, justice and allocation of social housing. Catholic’s were a systematically denied the right to vote until 1965.

Straight White British Protestant diplomatic as always, SWBP. Obviously Republicans by very nature are opposed to the idea of being British and having a place within the UK. However, in 1969, the Moderate Nationalists and Liberal Unionists who formed NICRA were campaigning for civil rights, a United Ireland was not on the table. All moderate Nationalists of the 1960’s were asking for was to stop being treated as 2nd class citizens. Orange Stormont refused to budge an inch, and peaceful protesters were beaten off the streets. If you are taking about the start of partition, of course Republicans (not Nationalists), were going to oppose it with force. Ireland was being divided against its will and the many in the 26 saw leaving the 6 at the mercy of Loyalism as acceptable to gain their own freedom, while many didn’t want to leave their Northern comrades behind. “Contempt” is putting it very mildly. Orange Stormont systematically discriminated against Catholics in almost every aspect of life. Are you seriously suggesting their was an ethnic cleansing of Protestants in the 26 counties? Even the Newsletter stops short of calling it Ethnic cleansing.

And you're free to have that opinion, just as Charles Trevelyan had at the time of the famine when he said "The judgment of God sent the calamity to teach the Irish a lesson, that calamity must not be too much mitigated . . . the real evil with which we have to contend is not the physical evil of the Famine but the moral evil of the selfish, perverse and turbulent character of the people." Genocide is "a little harsh" in the mind of a colonial power. But what is not "little" is the weight of this genocide in the future history books. And with the collapse of the British Empire happening right in front of us, a genocide is what the Irish Famine will be known as.

There were violations no question, as there were throughout the world. The Irish were clever enough to turn it into a left right struggle during the cold war, rather than a peaceful one. It was in the air at the time. They prose on about Bloody Sunday when the IRA killed more Catholics in the north than any other actor in the war, by a long shot. One of the stupider causes in modern history. Just joining the EU would establish human rights and hiring practices, if they had just sat on their hands, in under 10 years. What a mess. The IRA sided with the Lybians, the PLO, the Eastern block. Nice continuity with their earlier decision to work with the Nazis in WWII, who regarded them as muddle headed dreamers with not strategic realism.

Way longer than that if you’re objecting to Germanic people living in Ireland. The Vikings made land in Ireland not long after they sacked Lindesfarn... and not long after that they put down roots. Founding Dublin among other cities/towns... it’s some of the Irish who want an ethnically homogenous Ireland! They want the Germanics out! More details can always be added to a video, but you have to draw the line somewhere (literally in the case of animation). Put it this way, if more time was spent on the famines, something else would have needed to be cut. At some point, the video would have ceased to be a summary of English rule on Ireland and become one about the famines. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad video, just a different video to the one I set out to make.

Good video overall but have to agree with the comment by Sudo Creme about the suppression of the Irish/nationalist population and the suppression of NICRA culminating in Bloody Sunday was the biggest factor in the re-emergence of the IRA. The UK was culpable in having an apartheid state in their own back garden. Also in reference to the title: Ireland has many problems but when we look across the water and see the UK and their out-dated monarchy, their Parliament filled with numpties and non-entities like Johnson, Mogg, Give, May, "let's starve the Irish" Patil and Marc how-thick-can-one-man-be Francois as well as their insulting behaviour to our European friends and neighbours, the inability to move beyond WWII nostalgia and a weird yearning for the British Empire - the real question is why the f would Ireland want to be part of the UK...

This online post is very sparse on the true history of Ireland as I suppose modern day British people would be embarrassed by their past actions. Mind you to get control of any country the British always either shot or starved the population then labelling it a colony, forcing it's own ugly language everyone. Get the facts straight when doing these things please!!

The title of this video should not be a question but rather just a statement such as "Why Ireland is not part of the UK". The question implies that it could be or some may interpret it as meaning should or would be better off being part of the larger neighbour. Anyone who thinks like this has no regard for a nation's people or culture or aspiration for political freedom and is ignorant of geo-political issues. @mikki3562

As expected this video speaks from a British perspective. It neglected to simply say that Ireland was a colony of England and of Britain. The six-counties of the north is still a colony. And the so-called unionist population in the north are a maintained settler entity maintained by Britain as a bulwark against Ireland achieving its historical, economic and political potential. That is the role of imperialist, predator nations. Ireland was a colony just like India was a colony, despite British arrogance describing their colonisation as benign and bringing order to an uncivilised people. When Britain leaves the north of Ireland, and it will eventually, it will take with it its poisonous sectarianism, the ideology of the British empire. British sectarianism will end in Ireland, and much to the chagrin of British enthusiasts for their genocidal empire, Ireland will prosper as an independent republic holding sovereignty over its entire national territory. The unionist paramilitary proto-fascist organisations were, and are mere extensions and proxies of the British military. They, British military intelligence and their proxies are the very same as the Auxillaries and the Black and Tans. We don't forget here in Ireland, that it was British military intelligence who organised and used their proxies in 1974 to bomb Dublin and Monaghan killing the largest number in a single day in the recent war between Irish republicans and the British military, and paramilitary police along with their controlled Orange death-squads. But the biggest lying account of Irish history in this video is perhaps its false claim that Britain and its military were neutral in the conflict in the north of Ireland. The opposite is actually the case. The conflict was started by the British army invasion of Irish nationalist areas after the people there had removed the Orange state and its sectarian murderous forces. The Brit army invaded and it started a war of resistance. But this patently indisputable fact is too much for those who speak to a British narrative. They instead have to falsify the history, to make out that the conflict was something removed from them when in fact it was started and waged by them. In this respect, British chauvinist narratives such as the one above, despite the attempts to disguise it, reach the greatest heights of hypocrisy, unparalleled in world history.

The truth is short and simple, the Irish people suffered for almost 800 years the tyranny of the Vatican and English colonization. Finally with support from the US and Europe the Irish people (Republic) are today a proud and free people. All that's left is NI the last reminiscence of English colonization. However studying the demographics it is only a matter of time before Ireland becomes united- Then Ireland will take it's proper position as the Republic of the island of Ireland. It's most important friends will be the English, Scots and Welch. History supports this analyses and by the way the orange color in our tricolor will truly have its meaning. The green white and orange which means peace between the orange and green. Long live and peace to the Irish, Scottish, English and Welch. Your people deserve it.

The atrocities committed in Ireland are a very important aspect of the history of Ireland, as the context is very important. People starving to death or emigrating in their millions due to actions taken by Britain to subdue the Irish population had a huge part in causing the eventual 1916 rebellion and later war of independence. This was done only 50 years after the last rebellion in 1798, and believe what you will, but many ships full of food went out of every major port in Ireland daily, while the people starved or were forced to convert to protestantism to get meagre soup rations. The history of Ireland is one of bloodshed, torture, racism and also courage, to face all of that, and become free from the tyranny of an oppressive nation. Now, not even a hundred years later, the ignorance of the majority of British citizens is causing them to act as if Ireland has slighted them. I hope that those people can come to understand the truth of the history of Ireland, and that we can move on with understanding.

The Irish did colonize parts of Scotland and also other parts of the GB island going back to early christian times. E.g. the Kingdom of Dal Riada in Scotland. It was the Irish that originally brought the Gaelic culture to Scotland and also the language which then evolved into Scottish Gaelic (pronounced 'gallic'). Up until around the 1700s English speakers in lowland Scotland referred to Scottish Gaelic as the 'Irish tongue'. This was meant as a derogatory term to indicate backward and ancient.

You can’t say a region is British when 40-50% of the population now hold Irish passports and almost all are entitled to one if they choose. Plus we are diverging more and more from Britain. If a Brexit deal goes through we’re staying in the single market while Britain leaves. Only a matter of time before a border poll takes place with catholics almost now a majority. And I wouldn’t even consider myself a mad republican if at all mate. If there was a poll tomorrow I’d probably vote to stay with the UK. But Brexit could change all that for me and many others including lots of Protestants/Unionists. If we do end up in a United Ireland in the next 10-15 years. Do me a favour mate just remember that the DUP were instrumental in bringing it about. 😉

I'm sure it's been said but surely the title should be why is part of Ireland part of the UK. Why would Ireland be part of the uk?

Ireland was basically like the Holly Roman Empire with de fact independent states under a de jure high Irish King.

To be fair there were times when the island came close to being completely under one ruler, the most notable being when the king of Munster Brian Boru took over most of the other kingdoms in Ireland and drove out the vikings in the early 11th Century. He petitioned the Pope to recognise his rule over the island (essentially make Ireland one country and the Boru dynasty its only royal family) and the Pope was planning to go to Ireland to agree but Boru died before it could happen.
