Why is it hard for Asians in the gay community? My journey from rejection to acceptance

Building muscle does not mask or minimize your ethnicity to those who are clearly racist and closed minded. That is something that you should do for yourself, not for someone’s approval. If I went on a date with someone of another race that said “ i usually don’t date black guys”…that would be the FINAL date. I too have experienced rejection based on race as well as race based sexual fetishization. It only served to make me love myself and my own demographic even more…but to each its his own

Funny part is it's not really that hard for Asian men, it's the men they typically go for and their proximity to it. I noticed living in Denver and San Antonio, all the Asian men I came across were only wanting to date Whyte men, so if your preference doesn't want you, you kind of isolate yourself. As for blk men, in smaller gay communities we typically open up our dating pools, so we can have options. So maybe Asians should go against the grain be open to people who cross their paths instead of having hard stops based on stereotypes and what they consider "not a good look" as a partner. The two cities I mentioned earlier are predominantly Latino and Caucasian, so it doesn't take a genius to figure out what their preferences are going to be. Also, being a bit bolder to approach others instead of waiting to be seen is helpful.

In my experience it tends not to be many gay asians around and the ones that are tend to be VERY picky when it comes to looks and usually go for white guys and if they do go for a black guy it’s usually when they are a top

It was very hard but I had to do it. And my brother accepted me and my adult niece accepts me also. I never told my late Hispanic grandparents because they didn't approve of the gay community. I'm Korean and gay, but I don’t belong to any gay community. I'm used to heterosexuals not respecting or understanding gay people. However, I've also noticed that gay people often judge each other, and I'm convinced that more than half of these communities struggle with mental health issues. I don't deny that I, too, might not be completely well. But I feel uncomfortable with the idea of getting close to, belonging to, or being in a relationship with other Koreans. Being a minority in itself is difficult, but being a minority within a minority, like in the Korean gay community, feels even more isolating. I fear being part of such a niche, isolated group. That's why I'm hoping to connect with foreigners, especially gay men from English-speaking countries, and potentially form relationships with them. I wish you all the best in your journey.

Honestly to each his own at this point. As a Filipina, I’d say that those who instigate this “No Asian” requirement are usually Asians themselves. So if this is something that Asians want to get rid off, it’s gonna have to start with yourselves. Don’t put yourselves in white spaces or any other racial space and then expect them to like you because ofc most other races usually date their own anyway. Find attraction and appreciate your own kind. Date the muscular dudes of your own race because how would other races be attracted to or love you if you don’t love yourself or see yourself and your own kind as attractive to begin with? Also, that picture you showed in the beginning wasn’t really that bad at all. You look fit and have broad shoulders. Maybe you wanted to add muscles at that time, too and that’s fine but you were NOT ugly either. I think the self hate really runs deep among us Asians as well.

I don’t think it’s a good thing to change aspects of yourself to fit into a community you rightly belong to, I think that mentality is warped. I hope you realize that the club is not a real view of the genuine gay community. 90% of clubs is clicky. They are in a pack out of fear of rejection. Look at the age limit of club goers. It's mostly the 18-25 age bracket. They are out spending money to impress. I never understood that mentality. Clubs and bars are dark. They are not well-lit catwalk with flashing lights on a runway. You described cosmetic changes and applauded new found attention. That's not the kind of genuine attention you want. This what happens to people who undergo professional cosmetic changes, they draw in and feed off attention that comes with a price, Anybody with a brain should know you are handsome or beautiful. Stop trying to get approval from strangers. So what they don't date or like Asians. Dont get stuck on them move on. When you obsessed about what you think is great in the club and find out the dish, you'll say you dodged the bullet. As RuPaul says, love yourself. If you can't love yourself how in the hell are other people gonna love you? You are past the prime for ooh and ahhs for the club. You should have elevated to the protector stage. I'm an avid club goer around the world. I literally go to dance and pay homage to the DJ's music. I'm really satisfied with my friends that I need not be drawn to drama associated with club people. I have club friends too. A famous Dionne Warwick and Patti Labelle remake song called Don't Make Me Over. The club is for entertainment, be entertained and go home to your family and friends. Those are tge people that matters in your lives in the long run. Treat movies, books, porn, songs as entertainment and not create an obsession of infatuation that it's real. It entertainment ! The desire of wanting more and more is never enough or obtainable. I love listening to my younger gay community. Read more. Obtain more wisdom to share your family and friends, Being gay is one layer of who you are. The club should not be given more than 3% of your self worth. What's the line in Finding Nemo that Dora kept saying, "Just Keep Going " Grow and go, repeat.

And with western media promoting what's considered attractive and the general anti Asian sentiment, it shaped people's "preferences"/racist beliefs. When I say giving up on the western lgbt community, I also mean to give up on western Asians as well. As many hate their own race, and worship a certain race. And let's be real, how many black guys want a Asian top? I haven't encountered any. I think Jon give a great message to be ourselves, and stop seeking external validation. However, when you are constantly in a toxic environment, it will have negative effect on our mental health. People are social creatures, and crave intimacy and love. Waiting for someone who is into Asians, feels wasting your life away. And let's be real, the chance Asians will be liked in the west will be 0.001%, and even if miracle did happen, the white population will make sure to make you invisible. It's also pretty obvious Jon changed so much to try to fit into the lgbt community in the west. So did I, but no more, I'm out. Forever being marginalized does not feel great.

Isn’t it a shame you had to build muscle to get attention? Nothing wrong with your face and after watching your content for some time, you seem pleasant and agreeable. You must know about the dual paradox of being gay and Asian in the United States… Also, please know A LOT of dysfunction is entrenched in the LGBT+ community stemming from trauma of exclusion, abuse, discrimination, etc. It plays out in how we communicate or don’t with each other. Remain open-minded. The fact you acknowledge the some of the racial and ethnic dividers puts you miles ahead of many native Americans. Don’t fall into the trap! The love of your life could be Black, Latino or Asian but if you follow the norms, you will be bereft. Finally, another key trap to avoid is ageism. I challenge you not to exclude friends, especially, who are older - even senior. Those relationships were once cultivated and even honored in places around the world and throughout history. Much to learn - on both sides. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your journey!

Im kind of in this situationship. I met a really lovely guy online. We have never met in person, but I wouldnt describe him to be my ''type". Hes asian and more on the skinnier side. Im attracted to bigger/muscly men, because to me thats a masculine trait I find attractive. So almost feel guilty of it. Ill choose personality over looks any day. But there should be genuine attraction physically when choosing a partner. So it almost feels like you have to choose between, "good looking" or great personality. Finding both in one person is very rare..

I think it’s a combination of the two that matters in a relationship. What confuses us a lot is the difference between importance to a relationship lasting and importance to a relationship starting. It’s definitely easier to want to be in a relationship with someone who is hot vs who is funny. Looks are (obviously) a surface feature-anybody can see how you look with just a glance. So it’s definitely easy to see how someone hot could get into many relationships. But making a relationship last-that requires personality. Thank you for sharing your story 🫶🏼♥️

I don't know, I never thought about not being attracted to Asians. On the contrary, I find Asians extremely attractive and I would love to have a boyfriend who's Asian. Muscled guys? If I am hearing you right, you are attracted to the muscle guys (note the pictures you posted), which is why you are working out to make your body more like theirs. Would you consider dating someone who is 30 pounds overweight and average looking? How about 10 years older? There is no shame in admitting facial features that Asian men have aren't appealing. That is preference not prejudice. If you know that is their preference, why would you still chase them? Accept it and move on. Don't kick a dead horse. My friend , sad to hear you interpret your rejection in the gay community as Asian etc. Most problems is They wanna be like other attractive guys example wanna be white or very westernize while you’re Asian , Hispanic or black. Just be who you are. To each its own. I’m mixed too but when I developed my own attractiveness, my assets, style etc , I attracted muscled, average nice guys that love my features. Just be yourself & opposite attracts. It changes , me from white now to black guys. But I find some south asians attractive too & their backgrounds. I noticed most problems are the wanna be’s . Discover your true self & you will be accepted regardless what race or colour. Gym etc ( I’m gym bunny too) is supposedly for our own health not just to attract or showing off your body. 🙏
