But most statues are of people who didn't just participate but did relatively exceptional things, so it doesn't really work if you think about it.

The Confederacy (the people who wanted to keep black people as slaves) lost, but around the time of the Civil Rights Movement (black people fought for equal rights like being able to vote and such), groups like the Daughters of the Confederacy (who changed school curriculum to teach that the Confederacy fought for "states rights," not to keep black people as slaves and basically rewrite history) petitioned to have statues of Confederate leaders built in an attempt to intimidate black people and solidify ideas of white supremacy and make them seem like heroes. The Confederacy was basically a group of traitors to the United States, as they wanted to cede (separate from the rest of the US). They lost, but there are still statues up, despite the fact they betrayed the US. A participation trophy is given out during to youth sports for participation, so everyone receives one regardless of winning or losing. Thus, Confederate statues are large participation trophies for the Civil War.

My husband and I work very closely with the lgbtq community and we see it firsthand what cramming religion down your child's throat and pushing them out of the house does. As a parent I can tell you it breaks my heart because God is love and because he is love he loves us all regardless, and he makes us all uniquely because he loves variety. Unfortunately because of these ignorant parents my husband and I have to spend a lot of time counseling these poor kids, talkin them off of the ledge- literally, letting them know that they're not Freaks and that they're not sick and that they're not going to hell. What we see is what this horrible religious zealousness does, is push these kids to the ledge. They're on drugs, they're homeless, they're suicidal and it's not because they're gay, it's because their parents are ignorant assholes. 😢

I don't really trust that theology though, I certainly know they've done little to accept people like myself (an intersexed lesbian who, due to the intersex condition, was raised as a male). I think I'm definitely now theistic rather than generally agnostic, I'm sure that somewhere in this majestic reality of fractally infinite wonder there's at least one benevolent power/intelligence that deserves the title "God", but I'm still firmly agnostic about the details.
