Why is it so hard to get a software job right now? | Tech Recession

In this video I talk about the current state of the job market and provide my perspective on why software jobs are hard to get right now. I also provide some reasons why I think it's possible for you to still get hired in this difficult environment, as well as some ways for you to increase your chances of getting a software job.

Amazing video. I have been pretty depressed lately from my long job search. I was affected by layoffs in June and i’ve been applying, failing interviews, doing mock interviews and fixing my resume. It’s a pretty mentally draining process and I’ve been feeling if I made a mistake being a dev. This video gave me a lot of hope

Although I wasn't laid off, interviewing last year was a brutal process and I got pretty much nothing for six months, so I know this can be an incredibly heavy load mentally. I’m going through the same thing. It’s hard not to get down about the situation. What I’m doing to keep my mind off me so I don’t get to depressed is to do some meditation: it helps to separate you from your experience.

I got fired from a job I hated, and it took me about 3 months to find a new mid-level full-stack C#/React role. A year ago I would have found it pretty easy to get a new role but found I was regularly going against 5-6 other candidates with more experience. Some good advice I received was that it usually takes 7-8 interviews. Also it really helps to have some kind of project to show that you're keeping yourself sharp - even if its just a crappy to-do list. Focus on features rather than creativity. Tech companies have led us to believe that there is a shortage of developers, but this is to better take advantage of the situation: the more developers there are, the more we can force new graduates to accept low salaries and they can choose a few candidates out of thousands.

Yep this is the answer. The dev shortage in tech, the push to get more women in tech, the need for "super skilled" offshore workers? All were driven by large companies wanting cheaper tech workers.

Yep this is it 100% Years of lying companies making fake job postings they're not even going to hire for as an excuse to import 300,000 H1B per year - do that math there's only 6 million developers and they imported almost 6 million over the last 20 years! No other job in the world is targeted like this. Look at the number of applicants - I see numbers as high as 7,000. It's oversaturated trust me 10 years ago I would have got 10 jobs with 100 applications - today not even 1 real interview.

As a test automation engineer, its tough too. I'm getting interviews, but the hiring managers are asking for software dev-skills....they pull out the leetcode problems for you to solve when to be perfectly honest, that level of coding is not needed. I've been a test engineer for 6 years and the most complex thing I've had to code was maybe a for loop or if/else statements. Finding bugs and reporting them, and writing test cases, etc, and even doing manual testing is the bulk of the job-not complex coding. I think one of the biggest barriers to finding work for all is the hiring managers themselves.

As someone on the other side of this right now...I have no incentive to NOT require software competence. To be fair, I've never been on the test side as an IC, but if I clearly identify that I need a test engineer, put out a JD, and am easily getting candidates that can code at the same level as the junior SWE candidates I'm getting...why wouldn't I take one of those? I can tell you that it took about 2 days on the job for those skills to become useful...maybe that is not true for other positions in test, but it definitely was for me, and I wouldn't discount it being true at many places.

Well... you need to know more than just control constructs ( if..then..else, etc..). Test Automation requires a lot more than that.

If it's virtual just Google or gpt the question. Maybe in the early 2000s leetcode type of questions was beneficial but nowadays most of them are pretty much made trivial with how much information is easily accessible online.

The Tech field is extremely oversaturated. My cousin can't find anything, he has a bachelor's in computer science, A+, Net+, Security, and his MCSA and can't land anything. They want people with endless experience to offer them peanuts.

I was laid off in June, while also dealing with burn AND a death in family and a break up lol so I’m finally starting my job hunt and about a month in. Definitely discouraging being turned down for the same company i interviewed at in 2018 with significantly less experience. I have 8+ years, hired out of high school, no formal degree, self taught, mostly worked at small-mid start ups. Feels like an impossible climb at the moment. It’s been a mess to land a job in tech for a while even before the recession of this year. It’s just that before this year, it was a mess for new grads or bootcamp grads. Now it’s a mess for even experienced folks.

Late bloomer 2023 CS graduate here, and I'm glad that I found this video. I have a pretty decent one-page resume and was getting a bit discouraged since I haven't got any responses to my online applications. I'm pretty decent at front end fundamentals and programming too...going to keep on grinding applications and keep my fingers crossed!

In niche fields that combine electronics, hardware architecture, low-level programming, cybersecurity, and cryptography, the job market is not as oversaturated as it is in web or mobile app dev , where there are literally millions of applicants.

​@jianxue2945 yeah that's what I found with cybersecurity I feel foolish for listening to the hype on school. It's a massive waste for a beginner to study that field when it's so demanding of certifications experience or other credentials. I wish I had studied web development because even if that field is very saturated at least I would have left with some fundamental coding skills. I didn't really get much programming in my cybersecurity course which is the other problem I think industry is aware that a lot of these curriculums are terrible.

I am going to have to disagree a bit. When markets get tight, people that have a bit more experience might have to take a role that is below their experience level. I’ve been through multiple economic cycles and it does happen. Now you’re unlikely to be competing against people far outside of that range, though. Great advice on expanding the scope of the job search to something adjacent, that is perfect!

Agreed, and i did the same in January 2021. Within a few months, i was promoted to a role congruent to my skillsets. Unfortunately, i had to personally leave due to a variety of reasons, and now I'm back in the market having a difficult time finding opportunities.

Thank you for being the only person who has accurately diagnosed the problem. It's not oversaturation for the reasons you point out. It's as if people don't realize that the economy is going through a major decline. The tech job market is not special, rather the entire job market is experiencing hardship.

I'm reluctant to recommend applying for a peripheral role unless that is fine for you as a career. The problem: typecasting. It's very real! Once you have that bullet on your resume, HR types think that is *all* you can do, nothing else! Once a test engineer, always a test engineer! Of course, there may be some flexibility within the company, which I think is the scenario you have in mind. Even so, it can be risky: I know that we developers looked down on testers as not having coding skills: test scripts are in a basic specific language, we need skills in C++ or multithreading, or whatever.

Yes, this is absolutely a valid risk in taking on peripheral roles. It can be very difficult in some cases to not be pigeonholed into a role without the possibility of moving laterally or into a more advanced position. In the example you provided, it might be possible for testers to pick up very simple development tickets to fix basic bugs that they find in testing (assuming their company provides that flexibility to work on dev team tickets).

Yes!! This happened to me with Helpdesk of all things.. I could NOT get myself taken seriously no matter what my portfolio / experience contained because no recruiter / hiring manager could look beyond my work history. For this reason, I recommend against people starting in Helpdesk like so many others suggest. It's great experience, but it did me more harm than good. I had to find a company willing to take a chance on me and that was not easy at all.

I have 14 years of experience and I’m in the same situation. You are correct. Looking for peripheral roles or just things a little different from your preference is the way to go. Have a few “must haves” but then be open to anything beyond that. This field is pretty rough, you need to be resilient.

You made a lot of great points and given a lot of great advice Increased growth in SWE demand doesn’t equate to more entry level roles. When there’s a slump in markets - contract, temp, rotational roles increase The popularity around a CS degree has sharply increased due to many other jobs not paying enough to match the now very high cost of living & the cost of education continues to increase + the social media romanization of working in tech / remote / free (subsidized) perks There are many college & bootcamp grads that have yet to land their 1st full time role 6+ months later The collapse of banks that many VCs used have been a very teachable moment for stakeholders Stakeholders are now more likely to only invest in concepts that are close to or are already profitable rather than creating an artificial market IMO

Lately in the job market, I've been toying with the idea of expanding to a wider range of roles. It's nice to hear someone supporting that theory. Any other roles that might be valuable to look at? Maybe devops? SRE?

Yes, I think DevOps and SRE are great roles to look at as well (which is what I've been in most of my career)! Keep in mind, a lot of DevOps and SRE roles are more experienced roles, requiring a few years of experience. If you don't have much experience, then an equivalent role to these that you might want to check out is Cloud Engineer, which is often times kind of an entry-level SRE/DevOps type role.

Students -- Don't go into computer science! It is too hard to get a job! Study math, business, or accounting or real engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil) or a medical field.

This is really good advice, especially looking at satellite roles. I'd like to add contract roles to that too. I'm an SDE, who left one role (burnout), and was unemployed for about 10 months. I was bombing every OA for SDE roles, so eventually started applying to support and contract roles. I got offers for both support and a contract SDE so took the contract, and 6 months after that it turned into being hired on to the company. That was a year ago. If I'm ever unemployed again, I'll first start out by applying to SDE roles, but if I can't pass the OAs again then I will also look at satellite roles, like support or contract roles. I've also seen other colleagues change roles like that too. It's just easier when you're on the inside of a big company, and you just need to get in, even if it means you make a little less money for a while.

This is pleasing to hear as a Computer Science major. I'm planning on moving to the UK (Scotland to be specific) after my bachelor's is complete and am planning on getting my MSc of SWE over there which will hopefully help me network with companies over there and let them know that I am ready to work as a junior SWE. The main MSc program that I am looking to get into is also intended for international studies and also has the added benefit of professional work experience as a module for the program. So I think with all of that, I should be able to start my career over there and hearing that the market isn't as bad as others are making it out to be, this gives me hope for the future. Hi Moss. thanks a lot for the video! Do you know more peripherical jobs for a Frontend with customer care experience? I think that's the key and I asked chatGPT many times for that but for some reason it just jumps to fields like backend or UIUX. But you know what I mean, jobs that have 10% dev related things. I heard many times "HTML email templates" but for some reason I get 0 results for that. Do you have any other ideas? Writing documentation maybe? Thanks a lot in advance!

I'm very unfamiliar with frontend, so I don't have many suggestions here. Wordpress development might be something to look into. Again, I don't have a lot of information about what all is involved with a role in wordpress development. Other roles that I know could likely lead into frontend development are QA Tester or an Test Automation Engineer, since often times they will be using frontend testing frameworks like Selenium to perform User Acceptance Testing on the frontend of an application.

Most places are not equipped to deal with entry level devs. I had a shit job as my first one that demanded I perform at a senior level. Nor have i worked for a company that had a junior level role. You need to do whay you can to get working independently as fast a humanly possible which gets you skills to apply for better jobs.

I know this is old, but what about the mid and senior level developers in specific countries who are working with outsourced recruiting agencies to get jobs in the States on visa. You are competing against them which still makes entry level positions difficulty to get. Some of the advertised entry level positions that have mid or senior level requirements are like that to market to them.

The major thing you miss is employers' expectations and behaviors. The reason it is so difficult to get a tech job is there is extremely high to unrealistic expectations. Like being a .NET developer, iOS Developer, Android Developer, React Developer, and Database admin in one role and want to pay McDonald's wages for it. Expecting 5+ years experience in technology that is only 1 year old. And another thing nobody wants to hire a someone that has to learn. They want someone to "hit the ground running". There are a lot more of these issues that make it impossible.

From 1980s，nasa stopped give funding on training PHD candidates for aerospace industry ,which maybe was one factor results in "talent shortage " still exist today. So currently, you can see methods of "attract talents" are much different, the best scenario maybe is: they just can give you chance to demonstrate your work, as for rest (experience ， majority of expenditure ）is your concern. That's a great question. I'm not very familiar with frontend development, so I am probably not listing all possibilities, but the ones that come to mind are test automation engineer /QA tester for websites. These roles might have you working with Selenium or similar framework to perform automated testing of websites. If you're working in one of these roles, it's pretty likely that you'll get exposure to the actual source code in one of these roles and have to collaborate with the development team. I also think WordPress developer roles could possibly be included in this list, but I'm really unfamiliar with WordPress development and don't know anyone personally who have been in these roles. I suppose it's worth listing UI/UX Design/Web Designer roles but I think these might be less technical and therefore less likely that they might lead to a frontend developer role, although I've heard of people moving from design to development before (it's not an impossibly large skill gap to close to move from these roles into frontend development). Hi, FE engineer here. I don't know how does job market look in your country, but here in Russia there's a lot of jobs that are essentially Layout Developers. Means that you're working on CSS and HTML but not really working on JS part of the website. If you really need to get a job asap you might want to look in this direction since there's not so much to learn to become good with CSS and HTML. I think it's a good start for beginners bc you're sustaining yourself while learning JS by doing something actually useful to your future self.

It's worse right now than It's been since I graduated in 2012 from my perspective. Tech was living on cheap money and now it can't do that. The market is oversaturated not with new grads but laid off experienced devs. Job listings are lower than at any time in my career not counting mid-2020, which doesn't really count in my mind due to it being the early and critical part of the pandemic.

I think one very big factor not mentioned is interest rates. 2009-2022 was a unique time, we had both the smartphone boom and near zero interest rates. This allowed a whole slew of startups to employ thousands of people, sometimes for a decade without really being on a path to profitability. It's no longer the environment where such bets will be made, for the time being. I think you are still seeing some of these places hit the end of their runway and this will continue into 2025.

Totally agree. I discuss interest rates specifically in a more recent video "Why The Tech Layoffs Aren't Over". The time of getting massive investments for startups I think is over (for the time being). Investors are laser focused on AI hype but I wonder how long that will last.

I have absolutely no problem taking an internship in such a company if I can find one but searching on the internet the big or medium sized companies are on the forefront, small companies don't appear to advertise themselves on the internet at all

Good video. But i disagree with the getting more used to rejection over time and itll get better all the time. Graduated in engineering and broadened search to most any positions across the US and applied to over 1000 positions in the first year and a half. Depending on the person you may just get more disheartened and give up from rejection and not numb to it. Eventually fell into retail jobs for years. Luckily i got a random IT position from knowing someone 8 years later and am doing well now. But just know. Applying more doesn't change your odds, thats not how math works. Your best bet is to level up your knowledge and hope it helps if you happen to land an interview.

Actually, AI will be our best friend when coding! I use both VS Code and JetBrains IDEs (PyCharm, DataSpell). The IntelliSense and Autocomplete features of either Copilot or Codeium works wonders!

You are wrong. Yes, entry level candidates compete with experienced ones. Companies are always happy to give a newbie salary to a 5yr of eperience engineer. Also, after massive layoffs last year, there are many mid level engineers in the market looking for work and willing to take any position, even taking a low level salary.

You're right, I can't stress enough on how far from the truth this statement is - "entry level problems senior engineer wouldn't wanna touch with a 6 foot pole"😂. It doesn't matter if they like it or not, they just have to do it right now with a low salary on top of that. An Amazon recruiter told me that the exp mentioned on the job description is just namesake, you always need to add 2-3 years to it to actually be considered

Software tech has always been saturated and boom/bust ever since I started in it (mid 1990's). There's never been a time when the supply of software professionals didn't enormously outstrip the demand for them and the lines at job fairs, etc., didn't stretch all the way out of the building, around the block, etc.. Long term, secure employment has never been a feature of software jobs; it's been boom/bust with very high unemployment rates since the very beginning. Those telling you to do something else if you want secure, reliable, non-toxic employment are correct and are telling you the truth. QED....

I've studied full stack development for one year to get a diploma and now I have been an intern for six months unpaid. Before this I was a marine engineer and that is unfortunately what I am about to go back to as I can not find a developers job. So many times companies are asking for a lot of different skills and experience., even after the employer reads my cv and can see that I am trying, it doesn’t seem enough. I have started to loose interest in being a developer and it hurts to think as this was something I have put a lot of time and money in.

I'm sorry to hear how difficult it's been. I can absolutely relate to what you're feeling after putting a lot of time and effort into learning this. As I mentioned in the video, I'd encourage you to look at some peripheral roles like DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, Platform Engineering, automation, and similar roles. Broadening your scope of roles can increase your chances. From these roles it would be easier to pivot into a developer position, since the roles I mentioned do often require coding skills.

Seeing this state makes me actually think if I should change careers, I found a "temporary" job as a CNC machinery operator in a localized factory, paid by the hour, normal hours for a factory, without working fridays I'm being paid 7.5k +/- shekels a month, as a piss poor 24 y/o with 0 experience in the field and it's a field where one can advance, my managers see promise in me. All this makes me think if I should probably change careers to CNC programming and later pursue mechanical engineering. The job is also more satisfying, producing weapons for our military.

It definitely sounds like you find it fulfilling work! Finding work that makes you feel satisfied and happy (which is especially true if you're talented in what you do) is rare. So I wouldn't discourage you from going this route. I think this is more important than being paid well honestly. Time is the most valuable asset you have. If you happened to get paid well too, then that's just a bonus.

Dude it's whatever always happens when the venture capital bubble pops. By the time people have started flooding in to tech the venture capital gets pulled because of high interest rates and too many IPO flops and so just the time when schools are pumping out engineers the funding goes away and the numbers of jobs contract. 50% of the startups that began the year probably won't have three more years of life. Sorry to say but it's not something that reverses in 5 years and usually sees the bubble graduates ending up in different careers after painful transitions. Rinse and repeat every 10 to 15 years. Chat GPT will create a lot of AI jobs while wiping out 10 times as many programming jobs

Interesting! Thanks for providing this feedback. What you've described is something I believe is two sides of the same coin, and is also true in the US. From the perspective of hiring managers, there is a lack of "qualified candidates" in the tech field. They are being very strict with requirements for a candidate. From the perspective of a candidate, however, this feels like a competitive and challenging market for job searches. I'm interested to know if you think that there are strict requirements in Germany for candidates as well or there really is no available candidates.

I was thinking this as well, it's another unique US issue. I reached out to my friends that live in German and NL; they say the job market is robust and gave me some lead and some companies to apply to. Some are offering sponsorships, the need is so bad. I tell them about my experiences with 6 years as a dev, and how a hiring manager won't hire if you can't answer one or two random questions. They are flabbergasted at the stories I have in my short job search.

Im a software automation developer / SDET , and even it has less competition compared to traditional dev, hiring managers are very picky, for example, I develop automation framework in typescript and recently been diving into python since it is very much in demand in automation, applied for a company and told them on the phone that i have experience with python since I uploaded a couple of projects to github with a link in my resume, snd she said that because i dont have work experience in python then its not relevant, and in my head im saying the syntax does not matter! I have experience in automation development and concepts in programming, they also are getting very picky like a strict shopping list, btw I think sdet/ software test automation is a very good niche since it is pure coding (based on existing developed software ) and involves devops as well.

And then other branches like civil, mechie, electronics, electrical blah blah blah, when fail to get a job in their own domain also try for IT😂. So basically the whole India is trying for IT. I'm a physics major here also trying in IT. I'm a CF Expert, know Java, C++/C, Spring Boot, React, ReactNative, Android, Node,Postman,Swagger, Jenkins blah blah blah. The reason is IT is easy broh..and what eventually is easier ends up getting high in competition. Anybody can learn to code and become just as proficient as a computer science guy. I might not know Finite Automata, or DATABASE'S MINUTE DETAILS, but company's don't care for that. They want you to be proficient in a framework so you can get projects done. Coming from a physics background where your ass gets ripped with hard mathematical and theoretical physics, learning these frameworks and DSA was just a peice of cake. I graduated in May 2023, and learnt all this in 4 months. And now been applying for 2 months with TOTALLY NO DAMN RESPONSE 😂 Now thinking to study for gate or maybe do MS ... CS students aren't just competing among themselves. They are indirectly competing against Mech, Civil, Electronics and every other engineering/non-engineering branch, given how easy and how convenient it is to code nowadays ... Can you imagine a BBA (Business) and MSc Chemistry student learning frontend Development. Now that's called competition. They both my friends and are amazing/creative frontend devs

Don't worry most of these people will lose their time since programming is not for everybody. Every quarter there are thousands of people all over the world graduating from boot camps with very basic coding skills and after the first year most of them will give up, because they won't be able to find a job with these youtube tutorial React apps.
