What also isn’t being said is how they work the corners. They ride the inside and swing out before the turn which essentially cuts off both the inside and outside lines. They do it so well. They make it near impossible to beat them on a technical course
@JTMarlin8
@JTMarlin8 2 жыл бұрын
I think cutting off the inside and outside lines is just icing on the cake. L39ion simply takes the fastest line through each corner, which generally means swinging wide and hitting the apex. On top of that, their train is well-drilled and leaves no gaps (Go-Pro exaggerates those gaps - they're generally less than a wheel length), so even if a rider manages to get ahead of a couple riders in the train, he's still left out in the wind with nowhere to go.
@WaltDoesBikes

Agreed, Shaun. Also helps when it’s windy out, everyone is guttered doing whatever the lead L39ion rider is doing power wise. 🥵

Thing is...its hard to find guys who are strong enough to keep it that fast in the last few laps (or win) while still being happy with finishing 50th or so. Right now Legion has that magic sauce, and they are giving everyone else a taste week after week. But, I just watched Joe Martin crit where both men's and women's Legion riders finished 2nd - and I was glad to see that unpredictability.

100% correct, but if I was on Legion as a DS, I would get bored. I would find more enjoyment and achievement by joining a smaller team and helping bring them up and bridging the gap to Legion. I don't understand why Legion are so attractive....and if it's purely for the money....well, their riders are not true cyclists or racers. Every racer loves competition but with Legion bossing it like they do, can't help but feel it's taking away from every other riders experience that shows up....not very conducive to building the sport.
@JTMarlin8
@JTMarlin8 2 жыл бұрын
@@jameshollonds5548 I think you're out of tune with reality. American crit racing, for years, had the reputation of being a dying sport of cyclists who can't compete on the World Tour level. The Williams bros, building on the work done by Rassan Bahati years earlier, brought it to the next level, and crit racing now has some legitimacy. As for L39gion, several of its riders were disillusioned with the American racing scene and were on the verge of retiring/quitting before joining the team. Also, plenty of L39ion riders other than Cory and Justin have achieved pro victories while on the team. Doubt they're "getting bored".

@@JTMarlin8 they're my observations as a spectator from the other side of the world. I know nothing about the ins and outs of the US cycling scene but as a spectator, it sure is boring seeing the same team absolutley dominate week in week out. " I don't understand why Legion are so attractive....and if it's purely for the money, their riders are not true cyclists or racers". These are not Cat 5s weekend warriors putting around their local cits. You understand that there are travel costs, equipment cost, race fees, and food costs, plus at that level, you do want to be compensated for your time. Having some financial banking gives these amazing athletes some freedom to focus on training.

It would be interesting to see Legion at a pro kermesse in Belgium. Like you say, they are at their own league in US crit`s, but I think thats because the general level in US crit`s are quite average. Get them over to Belgium a cold rainy day, I think it would be an interesting reality check and cool to see. And Legion would probably grow as a team, you dont get better if you can sit at the front and control everything like the are use to.

They’re also kinda sandbagging a lot of the time. At least this field is some fair competition, but there’s tons of videos of Legion manhandling amateur p12 crits with that super aggressive style. It’s just a different kind of racing at their talent level- they sent Frayre to Worlds last year and Garrison is fresh out of a contract from fucking Quickstep. That caliber of rider is going to ride much more dangerously than your “average” cat 1 with a job to go to in the morning. At Redlands it’s just part of the race (for the most part), but it’s 100% low brow riding like that in all those random local crits for a few hundred bucks.

I see the difference. But why is it that right behind TW it's smooth but 5-6 wheels back it's surging like crazy? Is it that the single file of riders makes it easy to choose good lines and limit breaking? Would the difference be as extreme in a less technical crit?
