@beazy293
@beazy293 5 жыл бұрын
I live out on long island and frequent the city and tend to agree with the discourteous observation. You have to understand that when you walk past thousands of other people every day without really looking at faces and navigating through crowds, your regard for others as far as responsibility to be kind or a sense of community responsibility is passed onto others because you expect at least one out of the millions to give a crap. New York City in recent years has become dirty and overcrowded mainly because police here are instructed not to enforce certain laws to limit such things. They'll clean up the few streets that tourists frequent obviously but it's hard to take the subway without someone asking you to swipe for them to get in, or using a bathroom in Penn Station without finding someone sleeping on the floor, and even riding a bike without taxis or other rude people blocking bike lanes and double parking. I could go on forever about how the city's changed for the worse and it doesn't seems as if it'll get any better with the Mayor and Governor more focused on issues in other parts of the Nation. It'll always be a fun place to visit but the overall quality of living at a premium cost makes it a less than ideal place to live.

I actually learned something with my economics degree, cities exist due to agglomeration of jobs that make housing and renting more expensive in those areas which results in the building be built into skyscrapers due to the lack of land in that area being able to be built, pushing out the city to less businesses and homes until the city hits a suburban neighborhood or farm land. At that point a new city would began at another distant with the same goal.

As a New Yorker who has friends in LA this is the perfect dichotomy. Someone from LA doesn’t like New York, someone from New York doesn’t like LA. There is a reason different places have different cultures. So I would take their comments from the perspective of someone who likes a more relaxed lifestyle, NYC definitely isn’t for everyone but neither is LA.

Maybe this guy is in flight or fight when he goes into the city. But the truth of living in NYC is way different. When you live there, you know. The energy of the city isn't just about being "motivated" either... I will say though that if you are doing the 9-5 grind in the city, taking the subway at 8 am with everyone else you feel worthless and it feels like a fucking drag.

The sense of community is quite bleak in many cities. For all our economic progress, people are overworked, financially and mentally stressed, and often conditioned to pursue material desires rather than social well-being. Also, cities have become highly specialized because careers have, and so forming meaningful relationships with people from different walks of life has become more elusive.
@gc3k
@gc3k 5 жыл бұрын
In many cities, not all of them. It's easier when you're college-aged, and it's definitely not the "down home hospitality" type of community. But with so many people around with different backgrounds, community elements develop in its own way. YMMV depending on the city

Yo. I didn’t hate rent until I moved to a bigger city. Frankly I want a big yard with a wraparound porch. Frankly there has never been something in the city I needed to live around that didn’t offer more bad than good. City was always a ten minute drive from me, but I didn’t ever want to live there. Coffee shops, movie theatre and shopping mall. Drive there for the day and enjoy yourself, but nothing beats going home to peace and comfort unhindered by someone else’s legal mandates around your home and the encroaching sidewalk.

I didn’t really enjoy this video... maybe because I’m biased because I live in New York. But to say why we are packed together is like saying why did ancient river valley civilizations all start by major rivers.... the opportunities are abundant and attracts others who want a piece. Also you would be surprised, although there is a lot of commotion within cities, most citizens develop a feeling if a situation will turn hostile.

At the beginning of the millennium, Rome was by far the biggest city in the world with 1 million people in 496 square miles. New York has 9 million in 305 square miles. I’m not sure you can compare ancient cities to modern metropolises.
@FloatyBrain
@FloatyBrain 5 жыл бұрын
JokerL1000 I wouldn’t say know for being angry.. I think the proper word is busy. 9/10 a newyorker has somewhere to be or do and this is mutually understood. So a situation or event occurs that robs them of their time is seen as an ultimate disrespect. Most of all, us city people value time
@FloatyBrain
@FloatyBrain 5 жыл бұрын
Ryan Austin Dean sorry but I’d have to disagree. I think you missed the point. I wasn’t measuring the size of the civilization but rather what attracted them. And also their sizes do have some correlation. During ancient Roman times 1 million was a huge number to have in a permanent settlement. And in contemporary society where total population exceeds 7 billion, New York could possibly be Rome’s equivalent 🤷🏾‍♂️

I have noticed my stress has gone done my anxiety and my frustration. I plan to return to the city and I would recommend anyone to move out to the country you see everything from a distant yes you might miss out on stuff yes and have to drive out to placed yes but it will all be there next week and next month and next year and years to come. I plan to move back to the city.of Houston after I finish school and get a job in DFW then move to Houston later I feel like I have a edge up on people because I see how stressful living in a city is and how one could become trapped and poor if you don't have a stable income. I was in a Flying J’s Restaurant in Clear Lake Iowa back in the 90’s and from across the room I heard a lady say he’s choking. No one around him got up to help. I ran from across the room and did the Hymlick (spelling) maneuver on him. He was turning blue. After about ten yanks a piece of chicken came out. Other than the guys daughter no one said a word, they just stared and then went back to eating. Not that I was looking for praise, it’s just not how I pictured a moment like that to be. In the movies and stuff people clap and shit. It was just really quiet!

It took until about 1800 for there to be a one billion people and it took 112 more years for the second billion. The world population is about 7.8 billion, if not for cities there would be no more country side. World population is a massive issue that is never discussed. I commute into NYC about 60 times a year and I have never had anything but positive experiences. I even lost my wallet once an it was returned with everything still in it. I would never want to live there as I am an outdoors person but many love it. Its easy to get around without a car and the food is the best hands down.

People like living in cities because humans are social creatures. We WANT to cluster together. It's innate. There IS an argument to be made about cities being bigger than they need to be, but it's human nature for us to want to live close together in a walkable environment.

Why does every country have cities? Really? Two grown adults think it’s because a million people randomly decide to live on top of each other. It’s economics and geography. They are all near important bodies of water for transportation and commerce and they are hubs of ideas and commerce. Individually, you may decide to live in the city or country based on your values, but cities happen organically because of economic activity.
