These guys are outsiders and don’t know the way Indian betting market operates.. the illegal betting market is 10 times bigger than legal market .. illegal betting has been happening since Sharjah days and current commentators who when were players know what happens but never speak for the fear of falling out with BCCI.. btw, any contracts or chance of contract with BCCI for commentary is completely gone for them.. BCCI can’t listen anything against them, they are always right

We’re seeing that in American sports too - the legalization of sports betting across the US and the major leagues like MLB and NFL getting in bed with legal gambling has exploded and infested so much of the game. Major betting scandals are starting to emerge with players, umpires, and others in the game implicated. It’s tricky because gambling certainly will always exist legally or not, but in the US I don’t think legalizing gambling has actually helped.

Indian young players do not get seduced by betting mafia because they have too much to loose. They have all seen hero like Mohammed Azharuddin getting banned and also state level or Ranji players earn a good living let alone Indian Team A or B players. But there should be constant vigilance and education so that players do not loose their future over a quick deal.

This a disingenuous discussion. The Indian media have been trying to highlight match fixing corruption since the year 2000 from the days when Azhar was captain of the national side. The Indian media if anything, has been overly predatory since the early 2000's trying to uncover the depths of corruption. The problem is that no one took independent media investigations seriously until the IPL became a big money earner. It's convenient for English fans to only focus on the IPL, but where have you been for the last 25 years? Indian and Pakistani cricket fans were having these discussions daily in the early 2000's and believe it or not, some people stopped following the game completely due to suspicions of multiple international matches being fixed. It's wrong to just focus on the IPL and this discussion reeks of neo-colonial sour grapes based on India's financial domination of the sport. Match fixing needs to be investigated, but check your own motives. Are you really interested in addressing corruption, or do you only want to highlight corruption within India out of jealousy for India's financial power?

And doesn't get eyeballs any more. Back when the scandal happened, it was the biggest news on all Indian media. Because it involved celebs & big names who were betting, including the IPL chairman's son in law. And it was scandalous & newsworthy. I doubt there's any major attempt to hush it up, or brush it under the carpet.

It has nothing to do with betting being banned. In the countries where betting is allowed, illegal betting is prevalent as well. In the world where you can bet on the number of free throws in basketball, no of yellow cards in football, the players who are get less money tend to collude with people making bets on individual performance. That's most of the cases of betting recently in the NBA and EPL and MLB and they only come to light when companies have to shell out huge money on unique bets. The amount of fixing in college games where people can bet is off the charts.

Why aren't banks involved in the battle against match fixing? Why aren't payment processors involved? Match fixing needs money to be moved. Clamp down on the money and you clamp down on the problem! As simple as that! The problem really is this - no one wants accountability. No one wants to stop making money. So yeah, whether the BCCI, the ICC, or any other sporting organizer, they all want the least disruption to business as usual. That is the attitude that allows match fixing or spot fixing or whatever you want to call it, to flourish. We keep talking about how billions are being moved. Why aren't the media publishing that information? Instead of "You're never going to believe the new watch Virat Kohli was seen" why aren't the headlines more like, "Can you believe $500 million was bet on the Kenya Vs Uganda match?" That can happen. But it never will, because no one wants to kill the proverbial goose that keeps laying diamond-encrusted golden eggs.
