Why is Modern Architecture so UGLY?!

Hello Darlings, this weeks video is a bit late but here none the less!
I have loved old homes and buildings for as long as I can remember. Whenever I would watch modern renovation shows of old homes I would always feel so upset when the old home got demolished! So I thought it would be entertaining to watch me lose my marbles over the renovation of this 1950's country home. Let me know what you all think!
Lots of love,
Sage Xx

Dear Sage, you are so right! The scientists have proved long time ago, that boring grey cubes of modern houses make people depressed & simply sick. Human eyes & brains are used to whimsical shapes & bright colors of nature, because people used to be a part of nature, they lived in the forests, near the trees&flowers, saw them every waken moment of their lives.

I am British and these ugly monstrosities are popping up all over the countryside. The house should be kept in the style or era that is was built and sympathetically renovated. These properties do not fit in with the English countryside . I agree very ugly. I love vintage, born in the 50s grew up in the 60s & 70s love those eras. Thank you for your vlogs xx

@@CassiaMdByou are so incredibly correct in that assessment. This is all engineered and all by design. Every new restaurant being constructed is that same depressing gray. Sharp features, a square box. Inside looks so sterile and industrial. I live in Florida where this design is everywhere. Gone are the bright, happy Florida colors. Nothing better than mid century architecture. I was born in the wrong decade.

@@cindytrayer4279 I totally agree! We can now see the same boring depressing constructions everywhere we go, even in small towns 😔 I also feel like I was born in the wrong decade 🤭 But then I’m sure that God doesn’t make mistakes. Maybe we were born to be a change in times like these and bring back the beautiful mid century architecture and decor even if it’s only inside our own home.

The idea is to make every home look like an office building, isn’t it? So we always feel like we’re at work. Plus, that huge black wall with just a door and a second floor window? Ughh!! This is, basically a complete re-build. They might as well have knocked the whole thing down. So the architect is not his wife-maybe his sister? 😅 It is SO ugly! It is SO hideous!

I mean, considering that more people are being pressured to work from home, it doesn't really surprise me they would push that. And this horrible remodel is considered "beauty" in today's world. It's so messed up beyond words. How can anyone pour so much money into such an ugly thing, especially in today's economy? I just can't wrap my head around it!

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. People buy old, historic homes and modernize them to death. If you want a new home, buy a new build! My family used to live in a late 1800's Queen Anne home (I think that's the style?) with original floor to ceiling blown glass windows, original hardwood floors, trims, pocket doors and main staircase. When we had to sell, the new owners completely gutted the upstairs, painted the hardwood trims, staircase, and pocket doors, and put California shutters on the beautiful windows. The whole neighbourhood lamented. Rumour has it that the company they hired to paint actually refused to paint the pocket doors, so they had to do it themselves. It was such a shame.

I couldn’t agree with you more. My grandparents have a beautiful home, on the lake, that has looked the same way since the 60’s. They still have wooden paneling, solid wood furniture, a brick fireplace with a massive piece of solid wood as the mantle, etc. etc. Even though I love the vintage style, their home doesn’t stand out as looking outdated. Everything also functions perfectly. Nothing needs to be replaced. They want to sell it soon, because a house on the water, especially the outside property, is getting to be too much for them to handle. I know it will sell fast due to the location. When it sells, I will never, ever drive by too see it, because I know the new people will destroy it. 💔

The oldest house in my city was built at the time of the Civil War. some of the prrospectuve owners were talking about tearing it down. it’s not a historic landmark... Some additions were added through the years, like a bathroom, and more bedrooms. It has a fainting room. It’s about 2 blocks from where I live. The current owners saved the house. the 1920’s Craftsman house that I lived in until I was 8, torn down and replaced with a parking lot. They could have put the parking lot across the street.

There's a lot of architectural vandalism going on here in the UK these days, with lovely twentieth century brick houses being covered in white plaster and refitted with grey PVC windows and doors (not to mention the astroturf and poured concrete gardens!). It's absolutely vile, and probably quite expensive to do too, so I really don't understand it! I do appreciate high-quality modern architecture when it's done well, but that seems to be quite rare at the moment :(

Well Sage - if it makes you feel better, we bought a 1946 Art deco derelict, rescued it from demolition and over the next 2 decades renovated and extended it into a seamless, heritage styled, extended home, with modern design extension for family living but period features all thru it. We have been here 25 years now, and surrounding homes are being knocked down and repllaced with modern maisonettes - yet restored historical homes here in Adelaide still attract top dollar. SOme of us DO care, no one will make a documentary about us, but I designed the entire renovations myself, and the whole home is a homage to 1940's. All the more reason to keep your home and make it YOUR dream. We will never leave our beautiful time warp and everyone comments on it when they first come. Good idea for a video series BTW.

I am French and in France we have the same process: old vintage houses are destroyed (they are said to be "dangerous" to live in because too old) in order to construct concrete cubes with narrow windows that scarcely let the light in. I'm only in my early 30s and this makes me so angry that people are too stupid to understand the beauty in older buildings. I don't hate modern buildings but I like the really futuristic buildings that aren't boxy with the smooth lines. There's a lot of effort put into some some futuristic buildings to make them look good. The buildings that look horrible are your average American house with grey roof shakal's that aren't historical and aren't futuristic either just plain Jane.

I live in the north of Germany and here the trend has been modern danish architecture, which is basically big boxes with window walls. It's so impersonal, and it feels crazy to me that people are flocking to live in smaller, more expensive apartments just because they're trendy now. The older buildings in the city are so full of character, from the low, brick wall buildings built between the fifties and the seventies like the one I live in, spacious and smart in the design, or gorgeous buildings in the local flavor of art nouveau, which was called Jugendstil

And being in that mansion, built by the famous architector many years ago, was a real blessing! It was not only pretty, - it was very comfortable too. Warm in winter, chill in summer, - all around wonderful! Just going down the gorgeous stairs was an exciting adventure.

We are slowly renovating each room and leaving as much of the original features as possible. I always ask, “What does the house want?” and it tells me. All new fixtures we add look old. That house is an eyesore in the end. Horrid. I agree with you Sage. There's so much that could have been done to preserve the character of the place and make it estetically pleasing instead of destroying everything that was beautiful about it.

Hi Sage. I agree with you totally. All they need to do was to take ways the glass porch by the front door and get a new kitchen cupboard besides some paint. That way it would keep it's charm and still feel modern. I myself prefer old houses then these modern things. So it is not just you. Charm and character is what makes a old house. Modern ones don't seem to have a soul to them.

Oh Sage, you had me laughing so much at your reactions to this totally terrible renovation I dragged half a row of knitting off my needles! I think the architect and the expert need to watch a few movies from the 1950s to learn some character fix-up tips. With some old fashioned commonsense It could have been lovely....to complement the garden! So enjoyed this creative video of yours Sage. 🐾🥰

Sage. We have the same taste in homes. I adore old vintage style homes. My family recently bought and moved into a 1943 masonry home off a lake. It needs work. The inside was partially renovated by the previous owner. The inside does not match the outside. The inside is simple and modern. They also built an add on master suite with a master bath. We discovered that they closed off and built over the fireplace and chimney!! I would love to restore it to its original 1940s style. It's hard cuz my husband love the monochromatic modern look. And I hate it!! I love a romantic, whimsical, Victorian goth look. I want my home to look like a witches cottage from a story book. I would love to give u a video tour on my home and get ur feed back on what affordable things I can do to my home to make it feel more me. The town I live in is over 100 yrs old and has preserved vintage charm all around. Need to bring my home back to that. Thanks. Xoxo

Make the windows bigger but not horrible modern ones, put a cute porch on the front, with a massive garden leading up, trellises for climbing plants, stone pavers, remove that weird separation in the kitchen, paint the cabinets and add some kitschy wallpaper and then add in some cute decor.

Wow great video! I love your "vintage" aesthetic and I totally agree with what you're saying. It's so horrible when people take an attractive traditional house and try to make it "trendy" with ugly exterior changes and painting everything gray/black. And you know that in just a few years that "trendy" look is going to become "dated" and they'll have to change it all over again.

Sage, I am laughing at the glass everything and black cladding!! IT IS JUST LIKE BEETLEJUICE!!! Have you seen that film? It's HILARIOUS what they do to the farmhouse. Yeas, it's mostly a dark humour ghost film, but the entire part about the house renovation is HYSTERICAL!

Sage, I completely agree with you in this video. The home was so beautiful at the start and was so UGLY at the end of it. My parents and myself live in a home that was built in 1901 and it has a beautiful Victorian look to it and I have grown up loving vintage homes, especially Victorian homes. Seeing what happened to this home...breaks my heart

I truly agree with you about this house. The little cottage was cute and it would have been much better to keep the roofline in it's original barn design even with expansion and updates. I also prefer older homes with lots of character and charm. No open concepts for me. I like walls and separate rooms and I don't think a house should ever be all black.

I totally agree with you, people are ruining old houses. There is a lot of 1960s houses where I live, and people are modifying them to the point you can't recognise them, as a 1960s house and then making them ugly. Black and gold/ bronze is in right, but in 10+ years it will date the house, just like it did after the 1970’s/ 1980’ trend.

I moved into a 120 year old house in Canada two years ago. It has that same barn shape and a wrap around veranda. It is so special and so beautiful. It has had a lot of work done by previous owners but it all complements the house as it is. I live in a small town and when people we meet find out we live in the "barn" house everyone immediately knows which it is and they tell us how much they love it. I happen to also think Modern architecture CAN be beautiful but trying to deform and mutilate an old house to look more "modern" is atrocious.

Canada does have a lot of beautiful old architecture, especially on the east coast. I’m a little biased but Newfoundland and Nova Scotia (both urban and rural) have beautiful old buildings from the Victorian era and the 20th century. Some are being torn down but many are being preserved or updated in a way that respects the original architecture. This video made me cry and it must have been so difficult for you to watch. I love what you’ve done to update your own home during the last 2 years! I’ve been a big fan since 2020:)

Hi Sage, thanks for another great video! Your warm sweet nature always lifts my spirits and I was heartened by your comments and the many others sent in expressing their love of the charm and warmth of old houses, and how sad it is the way modern people ruin them. It's comforting to know I'm not alone in loving the old style homes with the warm cozy decor and furnishings and how they are healthier emotionally and spiritually, and I enjoy many old movies showing them. I've created a photo album of vintage homes, decor and lifestyles from before the modern era to lift my spirits whenever I need to. I'm grateful I found your site and I'd love to see you and others make more videos showing how these things were before the modern changes came, so please keep up your great work! Take care and may God bless both you and James forever!

Dear Sage, George Clarke is a national treasure here in the UK. The architect involved is not his wife....He does do some sympathetic restoration in some of his programmes. I do agree with you though the trends here are so modern!!! I feel we're losing so much charm you find with older homes.

I so agree with you Sage ! And I thought that I was the only one to think that the new architecture is terrible and ugly. I know we don’t have the same budget to have a house but sometimes, I think that the architect are a little bit crazy. I live in Paris and sometimes, I want to cry when I see buildings…I like the Haussmannian buildings so much. The materials, the architecture, the stones (Pierre de taille in French) are so stunning. And you turn in another street and you find a terrible thing called building ! The brain of the architects is different 😂
