I did an 05+ SD60 and converted it to 40 spline for the inner and outers with an Eaton e locker, Artec truss, and full hydro in my JKUR and have been very happy with it. It’s been bullet proof. Using ECGS drive slugs on it. Zero issues in 2 years of beating on it with 43” stickies.

I am not knocking the 05 and up Dana 60, I think it is a great axle....I just prefer the 99-04 personally. When I can get a 05 and up for the same price as the 99-04 I will probably make the swap....not looking forward to dealing with that cast housing....HATE THAT!!!

Thanks for the info on the axles. I’m building a set of ‘05 and up SuperDuty axles for my 1st Gen 4 Runner build. I paid $1k for the set with a functioning ARB already in the Sterling. I also figure in the cost of a Milwaukee Porta Band to deal with the casting. 😂😂😂😂

Having built a truck with 99-04 axles and broken every single thing inside it with a v6 there will be an 05+ axle next. Im sick of machining wheel bearings out for 35 spline, i need more then a 1480 u joint, i already have had to go to 10" gears in it, i bent the housing, broke the ball joints (and had to go to deletes) And i use drive slugs anyways ... lol

I had been wondering about the differences between the "modern" Ford Dana Super 60s for years. Thanks for shedding some light Ian. I have the "dreaded" 13 superduty 60. Grinding and cutting is a PITA. What rearend would you pair with this axle? I was thinking 5:13 gears, 4Ds. Maybe under a 93 yota eventually.

I have a question. I've seen you build a ford 9" for a front axle. How do you make a rear diff setup work as a front axle setup.

You can run the same dropout as the rear, it just ends up being a low pinion front. Or you can get one of the high pinion dropouts. Either way the gears function the same, you are only changing which side of the teeth your are engaging- drive or coast.
