Why is NO ONE talking about Like A Dragon: Ishin?
I’ve been having a real blast with the Like A Dragon: Ishin. I loved the setting, the combat felt like a blast from the past and the story felt like a classic RGG storyline, meshed with a good historical drama.
But it feels like NO ONE is talking about the game, why is that so?
In this video, we'll be discussing the possible reasons as to why that is.

@@chipdips no problem, mate. Though if i do have one small suggestion, here it is: In regard to the trooper cards, while it is true that you don't need it to beat the game, the BOSSES will still have it regardless. And let's just say, most veterans don't like the magic wizard power that bosses have.

Another factor could be the bad release window. Ishin was released near Hogwarts Legacy and Atomic Hearts. Most of the media attention was focused on those two games during that time. I was also tracking the Steam wishlist and sales chart during that time, and man, Ishin never even stood a chance. It was barely in the top 50.

Ishin really did deserve way more attention than those other two games. Beyond their controversy they kinda just looked… really mediocre and not worth anyone’s time. I feel like the only reason anyone even cared about them in the first place was because of the controversy surrounding them.

it has some problems, especially the grinding but it is in my top tier RGG games. I think why this rarely got talked about is like Cyriz said in their tweet: Those who really wanted to play this before the remake/remaster comes out have already played it, it is a historical setting which many people are not fond of and it relies quite a bit on your understanding of history. Also many fans probably are still finishing the mainline games and due to this being a spin off, it will automatically got overshadowed (like Fist of The North Star game), especially Gaiden and LAD8 are on the horizon I think if RGG completely overhauls the gameplay, controls, etc to be more in line with the Dragon Engine games, it will make fans talk about it more because this remake has also been a debate in Japan where some fans are not really pleased with Ishin's Kiwami treatment not quite being on the same level of treatment to the other Kiwami games
@chipdips
@chipdips Жыл бұрын
Perhaps so! I do agree with what you are saying, spinoffs will always be overshadowed by mainline and canon entries. The historical aspect of the game may also deter some people from playing it but it only led me down a rabbit hole of Japanese History HAHAH. When it comes to combat, I think the reason why it feels so different is because the game uses Unreal Engine 4, so it definitely would feel different compared to the Dragon Engine. I think the Dragon Engine still has a lot of potential, seeing that the Judgment series has its combat being praised to all end. I don't think that they can overhaul the entire thing, but perhaps a couple of updates to the games combat system may bring back the hope of some of the community
@samuel.jpg.1080p
@samuel.jpg.1080p Жыл бұрын
Yeah me too! lol Perhaps because I am already fond of Rurouni Kenshin and its bakumatsu history, it's easier for me to understand Ishin and be immersed in it. I love this historical setting and I think it really fit with RGG's flair of storytelling and I wish RGG will make another samurai game or even remake Kenzan lol on the engine side, it is noticeable that RGG is not experienced yet for UE4, and I think Ishin is a valuable lesson to the studio if they want to switch to Unreal sometime. The most important part is that the majority of the performance issues that plagued Ishin's steam launch have already been fixed which is great. I do wonder tho, since RGG themselves said they would need to overhaul almost completely if they decided to remake Kenzan in the future, I wonder what the combat will look like and how it will be received by the fanbase. If it ends up being "ignored" by fanbase like Ishin then maybe the most important barrier is the fact that it's a spin off that it automatically got overshadowed by any mainline games. Sorry for long reply here lol but I love Ishin so much, I hope the game will receive the love it deserves

There are 3 things that, i think, contribute to this 1.The fact that people are still catching up to this series. There are a lot of people that started playing the series with Y0 and LAD, and there are a lot, i mean A LOT of Yakuza games and people want to play them sequentially. I am an example of this as well, i got Y0 in 2021 and have spend almost all of 2022 and 2023 playing almost nothing but Yakuza games, i finished Lost Judgment a week before the release of Ishin, just in time! 2.The Trooper cards The trooper cards being outside of the dungeons was controversial, and giving bosses magic powers was also something that rubbed people the wrong way. I hated it at first as well, but as I was playing the game it stopped bothering me. I DO think that it makes the tone of the story a lot more goofy that it needs to be, and yes, yakuza games usually pull goofy off, but they didn't for me in this instance. 3.The game is good The game is good.... just that, good. Good story, good combat, good minigames and somewhat subpar sub stories. There is nothing that made people fall in love with this game from a gameplay and (sub)story perspective. No crazy combat like Y0,YK,LJ and no sub stories made you piss yourself laughing or were super wholesome (compared to other Yakuza games) [This one is super subjective, i admit, but considering not that many people are talking about this game I'm going to assume, for now, that people feel similar to how I do ] The thing that people do talk about is how it got them interested in the Bakumatsu period and real life people of that period like Sakamoto Ryoma, but that is kinda outside the game i feel. The game is a catalyst for conversations about the Bakumatsu period, not the game itself. TL;DR People still playing and catching up to mainline games, trooper cards and magic powers are dumb and being a catalyst for people reading up on the Bakumatsu period and talking bout it not the game itself. Great Video! Sorry for the wall of text!

People will likely get the same reaction if Kenzan gets ported. The spinoff games like Kenzan and Ishin to be where the devs make experiments in gameplay. Multiple fighting styles was started by Kenzan, improved by Ishin before it ever reached 0. And with the cast from different games as dead giveaway, Kenzan and Ishin are just like that unique episode in an anime where they get transported to a different world and take on different personas for a short while. And I agree on the trooper system - it should've stayed in the dungeon crawler minigame.
@pawlle

@@sapphire3084 Agreed, the spin-offs are experimental games, that allow them to throw ideas at the wall and see what sticks, without risking it with a mainline game and testing the boundaries of their new engine. The only time they didn't do this, we got the underwhelming combat system of Yakuza 6!

Exactly. The censorship, the rebalance issues, the ost changes, recasts, were kind of a huge turn off for most, especially me. I hated that they made brawler useless and removed the komaki roll from LITERALLY every style except brawler, and gutted the brawler parry. You just have less options and it feels like you’re just doing the same combo over and over till the fight is over. It's due to several reasons : 1. It's a spin-off titles, newcomers are welcomed to try but this title is strictly fan service and people that do not play Yakuza won't get the full experience 2. Performance issues early on crowded a lot of the initial news in the community - the perception was negative from the start 3. It is grindy as fuck and eventually all the comments from people are just about its grindiness which negatively impacted the views on the game 4. The controversy around 'Kiwami treatment' of it I enjoyed it a lot though, really. At the time of playing I'd prefer playing this over LJ but eventually I just got burnt out of it because of several reasons like grinding, friendship system & garbage boss system (that got buffed due to them pushing trooper cards into gameplay)

Right, I'll address the title of the video. Number one: They try to advertise is as a remake, yet it's a sugarcoated remaster. They could've remastered the game itself while replacing the actors if they so desired, like they did in Y4 remaster. The game was fine as is, but they had to port it to UE4 the lazy way (GTA Definitive Edition trilogy) instead of making a native port of it. Sure, it could've come off as expensive, but it would've worked just fine. Yet, they try to sell it off like it's a full fledged remake despite the fact it's literally just UE4 port of it. Number two: Unecessary rebalancing of the weapons/characters. Original Ishin weapons weren't as broken as they were. H2H moveset dealt just fine damage on harder difficulties. Sword moveset was also speedy, yet didn't hit hard. In Ishin Kiwami, you barely deal any damage with the H2H was reduced to the point you cannot do barely any damage. Sword got extremely slow, unless you upgrade it which you actually get the original speed of it with such. Bosses can NOT get knocked down, they have SuperArmor most of the damn time even at the start of the fight. You wanna get a combo on him? Too bad, he won't even flinch. Original game did not have that problem. Number three is obvious enough: Troop cards becoming part of the main game instead of being a minigame. Yes, you can "disable" them, but bosses will still use it regardless of you using it. It is really unknown why it does not do such a thing, yet it should. At least, as an option in the game itself. I blame Sega of America for pushing the idea of cards in the main game. But most of all is the fourth point: Broken at launch. They charge 60 DOLLARS for the game, yet it was absolutely broken at launch. Visually, combat-wise, it had a lot of bugs. How come did that happen? We just don't know. For example, the broken AI of bosses. Certain bosses have weapon patterns they follow in Ishin. But in the "Remake", they completely are broken: One of the bosses is supposed to throw the knives 4 times, but gets stuck doing so for much longer than intended, so you're stuck standing in one place to block it off until he finally switches back. Izo is much more aggressive in terms of swinging in the original, but in this game he's much slower than intended, but also his follow up straight up doesn't work when you get stunned by his swings. Visually, it had untextured places, broken enemy spawns, broken pathing for walking AI on the maps, seizure-inducing particles etc. Audio bugs and music replacements are minor (RIP Chivalry of Rhapsody), but still slightly relate to it. You're free to enjoy the game or recommend it, but personally? I think it's really disappointing they've butchered it by making a port out of it to the UE4 while it could've been a remake alongside Kenzan similar to 3-6 PC ports.

I'm a really big RGG fan, so big that I've gotten every platinum on every game that's available on PC and yes, that includes Ishin. This will 100% turn into a small essay but I feel that after engaging with the community a bunch and after forming my own opinions with the game I've narrowed down most of the issues people have encountered and it kinda goes like so: -For the long time fans who have just been playing the series since the PS2 titles, this remake feels redundant, since they've most likely played the original and enjoyed it more. The recasting of characters feels unnecessary to them, since they would have genuinely been fine with just a localization of the game, as well as just a few modern adjustments like widescreen support, uncapped framerates, enhanced visuals and JUST that. -For the Yakuza purists who haven't been long time fans and who just want their typical Yakuza experience, they kind of got that but even then some of the decisions with the remake has made them feel like it's an overall watered down experience. Again, stuff like the recasting of characters feels like an unneeded change and the inclusion of the celebrity cards break their immersion more often than not. -The balancing. The balancing is atrocious. The game was clearly made with trooper cards in mind and for anyone that doesn't use them out of pure choice, this is made immediately apparent. I myself never saw myself using any of that stuff since I prefer to play the game clean, like it's 2014 original, whilst only using cards in the dungeons. They're completely immersion breaking, go against the flow of the combat and honestly lack variety. You always end up using the strongest one without thinking too much about it. -The balancing gets me to the next point. The fans of the series' combat are the most disappointed by this remake and I have to agree with them, especially after playing this game for hours on end. The combat of the Ishin remake is horrible when compared to the rest of the games and extremely shallow. Yes it is flashy, yes it's serviceable but please try to understand. It's way too restricted once you want to get serious with it. The reason Yakuza 0 still sees lots of play and community activity, is often due to how good the combat system in that game is and how much better it gets with mods, at least on PC. Try telling those players that they'll need to pay 60 bucks for a game that only allows you to do 2 hit combos before getting your attack blocked or just attacked by the enemy. This is genuinely infuriating. Even Yakuza 3, a game which the community sees as the black sheep of the franchise allows you to do lengthier combos and that even goes for it's remaster, which is often shunned upon. And to make matters worse the original Ishin's combat was fantastic. -A big issue is that this game did not market itself right. Lots of Yakuza fans play Yakuza 0, Kiwami 1, Kiwami 2 and then stop. It's often due to lack of interest, knowing that the following games are PS3 games which they don't feel like playing, or just feeling so exhausted by how long these games can be, even for just a story campaign playthrough. Ishin doesn't follow the mainline games and honestly could be played at any point without any major drawbacks (apart from the fact you won't recognize any faces). This wasn't made clear to them. The celebrity marketing of this game was done purely to draw in more players. It kind of did but it kind of also just flopped. There's still lots of people who simply watched streamers play the game instead due to this, for example that one catgirl vtuber who is also included in the game through her card. The recasting of 0's actors was done for the same cause. People saw this as a cashgrab move and honestly, who can blame them. That as well as all the shoddy DLC practices led to the game not getting recommended by other players. Also, try to convince the average gamer that playing for a refurbished 2014 game that costs a solid AAA price tag is worth their money. -The unreal engine. Oh boy the unreal engine. It's the one thing that makes this game's act fall apart the moment anyone starts to dig deep into it. From its launch, the game suffered from constant freezes and stuttering on PC and players were not happy. This was addressed and mostly mitigated in future updates but it left a very sour taste. Many complained that the game looked like your typical mobile game in 2023 and honestly, I don't blame them, despite thinking that the game looked quite nice myself. However what they're not wrong about are the numerous bugs that were caused from it. The combat being butchered likely stems from this one fact, since it all feels like unreal engine jankiness at it's finest. Stuff like some of the physics being wrong in combat, how some animations were sped up awkwardly (try dodging twice with the brawler style's upgrade in Ishin and then do the same in Kiwami for example) and just a general feel that something in there lacked polish. -The grind. This wouldn't be a complete list if I didn't mention the grind. Lot's of people say that Yakuza 5 is the worst game to 100% but damn, Ishin takes the cake. The grind in this game is unreal and unrewarding which makes matters even worse. Seeing a cool sword you like and wanting to get it is just not worth it, since the story gives you plenty of swords/guns by itself. The amount of time I spent just gathering materials through dungeons to create all the gear and weapons, which IS part of the 100% checklist took me around 50 hours. This brings me nothing but pain. However I won't cry too much about it since I know it's completely optional and I'm just getting the word out for this one. To summarize, Ishin remake has its flaws, especially in today's market where 1 tiny annoyance is enough to start entire rants. It's been made known that less experienced RGG devs worked on this remake and therefor we weren't met with the usual level of quality we've come to expect. RGG's way of handling the game has therefor felt like a betrayal to most of the players, as well as making them question why some changes were even made. I myself don't give them as much crap as some other people do, but I'm also disappointed and likely never touching Ishin again. Stuff like the 60$ pricetag, the brainsmoothing combat and just the overall lack of polish drives any Yakuza veteran off. I hope that if we ever get a remake of Yakuza Kenzan, RGG will stop trying to appeal to a broader audience by making dumb marketing moves and will instead focus on providing the best product they can. I tried to make this as short as I could but I honestly kept finding more stuff that needed to be mentioned. Thank you for making this video and thank you to anyone who actually takes the time to read this, I highly doubt anyone will but who knows. Have a good day. :)

I played the game at launch and I had to suffer through all the stuttering and freezing, and before some of the random encounters I would have to wait for up to several minutes while the characters stood still until finally I was given access to playing the game once again. I often like replaying through the Yakuza games, but I doubt I will for this one because of how painful the experience was for me. Also thank you for the detailed explanation of the games problems, very well put, I think the point on balancing could be expanded however. Due to the balancing of the game clearly being designed for the usage of the combat cards, they completely butchered some of the boss fights. The worst offender in my opinion is Diago(aka the shogun), he is incredibly easy to cheese because of the super powers that are given to him in Kiwami, once he shoots off his kamehameha looking ability he is left vulnerable for a sizable amount of time. This effectively makes him the easiest boss in the game because you just dodge his ability, punish, rinse and repeat. I haven't played the original but I highly doubt he was meant to be this much of a pushover because of how seriously the game takes him.

@@FireCrewGAMING Thanks for actually reading that massive wall of text and yeah I too agree that I should've expanded on the balancing but I felt it'd take forever x) (well more forever, if you get what I mean). To answer to you, no he is not pushover in the original and it's honestly a really fun fight. Generally something they did with the remake causes all enemies to literally not pull off full combos which is ridiculous. The only thing that makes the new one tough is the obscene amounts of damage you take on higher difficulties and nothing more. Also him having just 1 healthbar ruined him, much like every other fight.

As a person that only plays the games for the story and minigames who started from Yakuza 0, I've never even considered 100% a Yakuza game. Your arguments are very well put and definitely worth a read for people to understand a veteran's point of view. I'm grateful to have you stop by and share your own thoughts, what is essentially an essay of your own. Really enlightened me to the game through the lens of a Yakuza veteran. The main problem why I haven’t been wanting to purchase the game is because it doesn’t directly go with the main series. Judgment very much either but it’s new characters and feels very different. After playing all the main games 0-7, I’m much more invested in that as of now.

My problem with Ishin was the grind. So many things in this game were "Bring x item enough times until the bar fills up." Which just turned into sinking money into this NPC, grinding for more money, buying enough of this item, grinding for more money, upgrading your gear to keep up with the enemies, grinding for more money. You get the gist. I eventually made the decision that I'd just made sure I was geared up well enough for the last 3 chapters and ignore the rest. Which is a shame because it's like you say, some of these sub stories were good, but I just thought it wasn't worth the extra hours the game wanted from me.

My take on why this game isn’t as talked about anymore is this. it’s 2023. Going from games like yakuza 6, kiwami 2, lost judgement, or any recent releases, you’ve become accustomed to a bunch of quality of life changes. Like a seamless world with huge interiors which is huge for immersion. Really amazing visuals. Great animations and fully voiced dialogue for EVERY piece of content there is. While Ishin is not by any means a bad looking game. The constant loading screens across districts, entering rooms or buildings, and the really terrible draw distance really makes the game feel so dated. Like, very. Now I know this is technically built off the same game as the 2014 release so they were fairly limited in what they could truly change. But I wish somehow it was possible because it’s a huge drop in quality when you come from newer releases. I think ishin is an amazing game with a great story and awesome side content. But in 2023 with the caliber of games we’re getting. The average non RGG game consumer is not gonna be pleased with this and probably won’t stick around long enough to see WHY this game is amazing. Any returning yakuza fan is probably not gonna have an issue with many of these bc a lot of the franchise was similar. It’s just a shame a lot of people probably missed out on this before truly getting to see the great game it is.

This. It's my reason that I think I'm gonna ignore this game, and wait for lad8 and gaiden. I had fun with 0 and Kiwami, but then we had kiwami 2, then yakuza 6, then judgment and lost judgment, and personally all of those games are my favorite ones to play out of the whole series. 0 and kiwami while being enjoyable, and still serviceable, really are a bit of a step up from the older ps2 versions. Alot of the times playing them I felt like I was playing an older ps2 game, with the lack of voice acting, graphics, and game mechanics, and honestly was gonna fall off of the series as a whole, until I played kiwami 2 and it breathed new life into the series for me and made me not only keep playing but fall in love with the franchise as a whole. I even played and got through 3, 4, and 5, after awhile of playing those though, I was just barreling through to get to 6, cause man those three games are dated, especially 3, and 4.

Great video, although I don't agree with a couple of the points in this video, but in general as I understand it, and as some other users put it-- the people who wanted this game the most were the veterans. That community of people have already played the game, and are, admittedly, a niche community of not that many people compared to the general populace of videogame players, or even those who played the more famous titles of the series like 0 or Kiwami 1 and 2. I'd argue the historical setting, but more importantly the fact that it is a spin-off is what makes this game feel "forgotten". It's not actually forgotten, but it certainly is overlooked, especially with Gaiden and 8 coming out in the near future. Things like the trooper pay 2 win might have affected the public perception of the game but I'd say it wasn't really a driving factor to this situation. The OSTs of the game have pretty good view counts for example, with Assassination of Bodhisattva at 130k views and Soar, Hijikata Toshizo's also around that same view counrt at 140k. This isn't bad at all, that shows the game has a following. I just think all the reasons I listed worked towards this game being less talked about. I also think them using the older engine and not the new Dragon Engine definitely turned some people off the game (though I personally don't mind it).

I think that these games are, and will always be, games that are sort of "overhyped" in the community. The limited access that these games have, combined with the nostalgia factor that some of the veterans have for the game will always make the game seem better than it actually is for some. Me personally, I enjoyed the game for its story and minigames. The soundtrack and Karaoke is pretty darn fun too. But I understand if people don't enjoy the game as much as I do, it's just personal preference. So, my personal additions before watching the full video, is that I feel that people have been asking for an Ishin remake for so long, that now that it's finally there and they played it, that they've just moved on. When it comes to Ishin, there isn't really a moment that stood out to me, story wise. Not like in other games like for example in Yakuza 0 how Majima's side of the story went, or in Yakuza 5 all the struggles Kiryu went through to protect his family, or in Like a Dragon: Gaiden how Kiryu would do anything to keep his family away from harm. Nothing in Ishin truly has a moment like that stands out. Which is why no one might be talking about it.

I haven't bought ishin yet due to my current efforts to play the judgment games. However, I have played the combat demo, and I think the main deterrent for me IS the trooper system. Personally I love RGG games because of its amazing in depth combat system, (especially the judgment games and yakuza 0) but when you throw in weird elements like skill cards, I start to enjoy the system a lot less. This is mainly because I prefer having all the skills at my disposal and learn how to use them on my own. So when I game has me waiting on cool downs to use skills, its just not as fun to me. Now despite my opinion's on the trooper system, I WILL pick up[ this game and I have a feeling it will still be very enjoyable. And maybe the combat will grow on me just as like a dragon 7 did.

I recently got into the Yakuza series when I got a gaming laptop that came with 1 month free of Xbox pass. I've played and beaten Kiwami 1, 2, and Yakuza 0. Yakuza 3, 4, and 5 did not function well on my pc. The controller buttons are all wrong. That makes it even more difficult for me since I use a ps5 controller. I had to get used to the Xbox layout for a lot of mini games or parts of the main story. Moving on. I'm actually a huge samurai fan and had been playing majority samurai games like Samurai Warriors 5 and Onimusha (1,2,3) in the past year. My favorite anime is Gintama (maybe because it's samurai related 🤔. But mainly because it's an amazing anime). So, when I entered the wonderful new world in Like a Dragon, I was immediately in love. I'm still playing and haven't finished yet, but here are my stats so far. Chapter 7 Difficulty: Easy Substories: 90% complete Diligence records: 75% complete Percentage Complete (Main Story): 53% Playtime: 78 hours Level 59 I spent most of my time doing the side business, "Another life." Completing the Scarecrow levels inside the building, not at the river. Barracks. Some 100 v 1 fights in arena. When I played Yakuza 0, I finished the story almost immediately and did none of the substories. I am trying to balance it now, plus I don't want the story to end 🙈. Also, this time period and the shinsengumi are killing me with laughter. I didn't know the history when I watched Gintama so it's all too funny playing it. Majima being Okita is just perfect in every element. Thanks for the video, hopefully more people start talking about it ❤

I think that other of the main factors that shut off the hype was the crafting system, cause for some weapons many of the materials needed, the drops are RNG (cof cof Dragon Hawk and The Last of the Dragons cof cof) and also the seals to improve the weapon efficiency are also RNG which it means hours and hours of grinding, luckily there are mods to ease the grinding method, but with console players there aren't many options, also the reinforcement process is RNG, cause even if your seal has 88% or 90% of success by making your weapon or equipment more powerful, the power possibility isn't 100% so the seal still can fail, and if it fails it doesn't matter if you load your save file, cause if it fails it always gonna fail, you gotta find a new seal of the same type to try some luck powering up your weapon again, which that sucks honestly, also for what I've seen in the original Ishin the power up isn't RNG attached, cause it depends of a enforcement timing minigame, which with the perfect timing your equipment and weapon upgrade always gonna be successful, and I'm not sure of this, but for what I heard if you sacrifice one of your weapons you always gonna receive the materials used for the weapon back to you, which is perfect to forge other weapons in case you're low of materials, if that's true is something better than the remake cause in the remake by dismantle one of your weapons you just receive some of the materials used, not all of them. I think that the seals and some crafting rules are things that affect the gameplay deffinetly, but still this localization is very good, and Ishin is a great experience as a whole, and also I think some Yakuza fans prefer to wait for LaD Gaiden or LaD 8 before playing LaD Ishin, also other games launched during February and May, so yeah is understandable that other games ate the people attention too, this year has been awesome in terms of videogame launches in general.

i love this game, but then again any game that features samurai im all for it. having said that, i can tell what the disconnect is, and it's not Japan because this game is huge over there. but it's how this game is perceived in the west. yes there's no denying the gameplay is flawless, the story is good, and even the side content is decent. but it's the characters, now Kiryu given a makeover for the game is fine, but there are way too many crossovers. i can see a few characters jumping over, Kiryu and Haruka, but alot of the other characters i felt like should've been completely new characters. so the reason why this game isn't talked about as much, it has to do all the familiar characters in it. i think people can live with Kiryu and Haruka in the game, but this game didn't need people like Nishiki, Akiyama, Saijime, and the bosses from Yakuza 0. In other words, it's too Yakuza heavy. the game is popular in Japan, but in the west, people like to see new characters. other than that, the game is good. i knew his brother would end up being a problem, and that's the part i mean. it made it too obvious who the main enemies will turn out to be. Majima is a fan favorite, but him in a Samurai game setting doesn't quite fit. i really like Kiryu's design the game though, and the girl Ryoma falls for i like quite a bit.

imo the trooper system was not at all the issue with this game The problem was there is nothing memorable enough here. All Yakuza games have standout moments in them that stick out in your mind like damn that was a great scene. 0 is almost everyone's favorite (mine is 6) because it is full of these moments. Not just the emotional beats but the humor too. Even the less popular games have parts which everyone endears. 3 had the orphanage section, and 4 introduced us to both Akiyama and Saejima. Ishin has... nothing. Ishin's highs are wayyy too low compared to the other games. It is good. But that's it. It did not leave a strong impression on me like every other game in the series.

I still haven't played the game yet due to no money. However i did play the original Ishin and something that i noticed especially with the veteran/original ishin players is that most of them dislike the changes in the game from the character changes and having trooper card as a semi mandatory addition outside of the battle dungeon. I know someone who keeps saying that the remake is trash and rather play the original because of that reasons. I don't know if this contributes to the factor of people not talking about it because of simply nitpicking about which version of the game they prefer. I don't have any says about the remake tho, but it's just a thing i found here.

to add on to some of the reasons that people may dislike the Ishin remaster. -from what i understand they changed how seals are farmed (im not sure how it was in the original but from comments ive seen trying to farm seals in the remaster, its been a massive time sink and headache.) -on certain heat actions there's some noticeably bad frame drops -crafting and enhancing your gear is an atrocious experience. As an example, attempting to enhance your gear with seals has a success probability that reduces as you upgrade the seals further. This wouldn't be as bad if the success chance wasn't fixed. (If you fail at upgrading a seal and attempt to load a previous save to try again it will still fail each successive time even if the probability is high.) - I heard the original ishin had an extremely bad grind and while not as bad it is still pretty grindy when compared to other games in the series.

However, I understand that it sort of muddles the combat, and it can be seen as predatory, so I get where a lot of the criticism is coming from.

I'mma be real with you, I barely ever farmed for seals or even did the Third Division Missions (or whatever they're called). I only ever got seals from fighting random goons on my way to different minigames. Crafting, on the other hand, is definitely something that I had a hard time dealing with as well, so I totally get you. But for the most part, after getting Okita Soji's sword, I barely switched off of it, so my experience is probably different than yours.

The thing is....I think it's so forgotten because of the horrible grind. I caught myself going on my regular RGG sidetrack doing the side stuff, getting new abilities etc. And the thing is: it's even worse then in previous games. Like, way, WAY worse. Celling is an extreme bitch to get to and without mods that ease the grind(hell, even with them) you just kinda forget about everything else that makes this game good. You forget about seeing ya bois for the first time, forget wrestling Ryuji, forget meeting Akiyama and wonder why haven't you met him earlier, forget the surprise of Shibusawa being a good guy(I know, I've seen the scar) and you forget about nice little minigames you did to get that friendship with certain NPCs. The grind just.....It just kills the mood. And dungeons don't really do the series justice as well. By the late dungeons you have to abuse everything you got like a drunk stepdad to get through and to get fast, and combat in Ishin is some if not the tightest in the series! It's up there with K1, 4 and 5! I came to the series only this year, but even I can tell Ishin's grind is much, even compared to 7 which I got on 100% shit's wild

This game is on the top of my wishlist since announcement, but never got around to it because there are too many great games that came out this year and my big backlog… Currently playing Lost Judgment, and now Gaiden is out and infinite wealth soon as well … there’s too many games to play, not complaining though. Still super excited to play Ishin just no time yet

I just finished it and had a good time, good gameplay and good story although I was very dissapointed with the substories, there were nowhere near the level of 0 or Kiwami.

3 years ago I played Yakuza 0, my very first Yakuza game and I can hardly put to words how much i enjoyed the story. Thing is, about 70 hours later i felt really burnt out on it, to the point that years later I still don't feel like tackling another Yakuza game despite wanting to. I tried with Kiwami a few months after finishing 0 and lasted about two hours before giving up. I'm fully aware these games are immense in every sense of the word and Ishin looks fantastic, but I just don't have it in me to even try.

For me personally, it was the trooper system as a whole, the goofy giant enemies on parts of the main story that weren't in the original, combined with the massively increased grind requirements on a game that ALREADY was grind heavy, which was very obviously done to encourage mtx. Plus, the combat doesn't feel as tight as OG Ishin, some combos that used to knock down no longer do so, the hits don't feel satisfying, and indeed the barehanded style is completely useless. Even if we completely disregard the original, the combat feels strange. Compared to Y0 , K1 and 5 it's just a straight downgrade and it's 100% because of the heavy focus on the cards and grinding. Their goal was to bring the game to the west, and I'm so so happy they went for it...but Ishin Kiwami right now stands as like the 3rd best way to play Ishin.

This game is amazing. I pre-ordered this shit with no regrets. It was amazing. The ending song was amazing. The presentation was amazing. The framerate was amazing (PS5). This game is special. I thought Ghost of Tsushima was the ideal Japanese Samurai experience, but no. Hell no. It’s this. This game is on the same level as Ghost imo. Where Ghost tops it with visuals and overall presentation, Ishin provides a “genuine” feel of living in that town. This game deserves more discourse, positive or not. EDIT: This is a game that released in 2023 and actually worked upon release. That should at least get it some recognition

yakuza zero is the most popular (and arguably the best) game in the franchise but overall it's still a niche game. these games will always be niche in the west there is just nothing that can be done about it.

Yakuza 0 and Judgement are talked about so much because they are the games that are recommended to new players and it's this influx of new players that keeps the game relevant. NOBODY is recommending Inshin as their introduction to the series. So players who are new will be starting with 0, Kiwami, or Judgement and then moving through the connective stories to other games that continue the stories they know. Which means they have like 8 games on the backlog before Inshin and it never feels like a good time to play it because the next new shiny game with their favorite characters is just around the corner. It's very hard to choose to pick up this game when you have 600 hours of other Yakuza content on your plate in settings and stories you're more familiar with. I don't think this game will be talked about much until they release an Inshin 2 and that becomes the hottest new title with crazy new features. That'll draw people into the first one who will suddenly all claim it as a 'hidden gem'

I think there's a few reasons - 1) Influencers seemed to overhype it (as per usual) while ignoring existing criticisms of the OG version which ultimately led to a lukewarm response from newbies, 2) The poor performance on launch which inevitably leaves an impression, regardless of the speed at which said issues are resolved, 3) The next criticism may be a purely personal perspective but the presence of influencers/vtubers within the game - it's cheap and gimmicky and in a sense destroys the universe in which the games are set. This has reached an apotheosis with Yongyea voicing Kiryu in the latest offering, disregard any social justice narrative that people may lazily ascribe to this, it's a pure marketing tactic. "Hey guys, this bloke has a large audience and I thought including creators people love (TM) within our games is a net positive. This is sure to be a successful move!" I can guarantee some suit in a boardroom spouted something along those lines. I don't watch Yongyea's videos but I know enough about him to realise that he's a charisma vacuum who has yet to demonstrate an ability to act. Kiryu is strong and stoic with outpourings of emotion in melodramatic instances, Yong is incapable of conveying that. His presence directly affects the quality of the final product and I hope this isn't a path that RGG continue to tread. 4) it's release proximity to the forthcoming series entries, RGG need to give the series room to breathe, the fact that we're witnessing the release of 3 series entries within a year (admittedly this is a re-issue/remaster) is concerning and I'm sure this affected the purchasing decision of long-standing series fans. Honestly, I think RGG are at a crossroads and are in serious danger of going beyond the point of no return ala Saints Row 4. It's fine to demonstrate an awareness of your audience's preferences, in fact it's outright desirable HOWEVER there's an increasing reliance on the series' greatest hits through the form of direct references to meme material/previous titles. While the latter can help to consolidate a universe, it can conversely prove destructive as the writers become increasingly reliant on this crutch. How is this relevant to Ishin? The re-casting of the central roles. Now, I'm not sure if there were any rights issues which forced RGG's hand and I'm sure the cast delivered their lines earnestly but it felt like cheap "nostalgia" bait. Fan service is fine but it's a play that should be wielded sparingly. I'm not somebody who played the original version of Ishin and I very much enjoyed the demo but I'm know this aggravated a porition of the existing audience and in a sense detrimentally affected the universe in which Ishin is set. At the end of the day, the series has been reinvigorated in recent years (having been at the brink of death), Yakuza/LAD has always been fun,fresh,engaging and occasionally emotionally satisfying despite the (at times) pedestrian pacing and incredibly clunky mechanics, let's not see our favourite Rock band of a videogame regress into a tired, lifeless, greatest hits-peddling tribute act of a title that it's in serious danger of becoming.

As a lover of RGG games, Ishin was a pretty great and fresh experience for me. Now I didnt really like the trooper card system or the grinding but thats just me. My main problem is since the game is in UE the modding capabilities have been severely limited which is what kept me playing and re downloading past games. I dont have too much of a reason to go back to it cause of that.

Although i have not played ishin i found some people complaining about its combat and that it was bad but this game came out after LJ which was a massive step up in combat in the yakuza series. Its not the main reason but I think it may have added to the fact that the devs were lazy in not polishing the combat enough in order to fit in line with other yakuza games. Not only that the price is WAY too high for what the game offers. Its not even a full remake its just ported over to UE4. I was so hyped when the game was announced but I think the game is just like the 3 to 5 remasters. Pretty good games but falls short in terms of combat (3 was meh, 4 was decent but 5 was the worst of the 3 imo). If the game was cheaper or even dragon engine quality i think it wouldve been more highly praised as a NEW entry in the series.
