part of why it is hard, its because they make you do unnecessary assignments that don't matter and they get strict about those damn care plans

If I was to boil down nursing school's difficulty to a single entity then it would be "chaos". Nursing school, the culture of nursing school, is a jumbled mess. Classes are taught by multiple people, assignments pass through many hands, rubrics are unclear, expectations fuzzy, schedules often changing on the spur of the moment, poor planning, unprepared faculty, and so forth. There is nothing about nursing school that should be as hard as it is and, indeed, it really isn't that hard when I really think about it. But it is a goofy mess of contradictions, unpleasant surprises, and horrible planning. It's a shame because nursing is such a wonderful profession but nursing school is in need of major reform. It's a joke.

Daniel...it is not letting me reply to your comment, so I hope this response finds you. I think that switching your major to Health Sciences really all depends on your personal goals/situation in life. If you know you won't be able to get into nursing school, then it may be a good idea to switch majors so you can get your degree. There are several post-bacc programs to get your RN after you graduate with a separate degree. I think that in order to get into nursing school, you need to keep high grades (no matter what major you are doing). You will still have to do some pre-reqs, most likely, for nursing school before getting in if you switch your major. I hope this helps!

I was blessed with a nursing program who provided good PowerPoint notes to study off from. All I had to do was attend lectures, take notes next to that PowerPoint. And just study and memorize it everyday so that way I don't get overwhelmed. Like you said, procrastinating is never good. The books were just reference to supplement that awesome PowerPoint notes. But that's not always the case with other nursing programs. thanks for sharing

Golden Gal yeah, and in case it's not like that, it's better to go to the teacher and ask for help right away if you don't do well in the begining. it's okay to not do well on the first test, even fail it, but it's the adjustments that you do afterwards that will make a huge difference. the first tests are the hardest because you don't know what to expect as far as where the material is coming from, is it from the books, is it from the lecture, from the notes.

Gonna be a second year nursing student this coming fall!! I'm excited, but nervous at the same time. My first year of nursing school was all theory and a couple of labs/seminar. Second year is when i will 'truly' experience nursing school since i'll be having clinicals! My first day back to school is already a clinical day and i don't feel ready!! I'm doing long term care, and i'm terrified i'll mess things up. I don't remember much from the labs in my first year 😱 and since im on a two month vacation, i don't have my nursing textbooks to study from, and my online notes have been taken down! 😢😢

Hey Ashely, I have a question, so right now i am a pre nursing major. I really want to be a nurse but I don't think my grades a good enough to get me into nursing school. So I am planning to change my major to health science, if i don't get in. So do you think it is a good idea so get a degree in health science, and then applying to nursing school after? Thanks Daniel Yue ps. love your videos, they are so informative! :)

The only part I find difficult is the subjective clinical experience. Being at the top of the class means nothing when it comes to clinicals. I always worry about the clinicals because if I make the wrong impression on someone I can fail regardless of my above average grades. I've been lucky, so far, and have been able to blend in to the clinical sites but others in my class have not.
@AshleyLorenaAdkins
@AshleyLorenaAdkins 9 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you have a really tough clinical experience. In my experience, no one fails clinicals for "not being liked." The only way to fail clinicals (besides not coming and doing the required assignments) is to be unsafe.

D's experience is valid. One can indeed not do well in clinical for reasons other than academics. Try to blend in and don't intimidate or offend anyone with your presence.

For me, the hardest part was adapting my study habits to the NCLEX-style. I entered the program with a 4.0 and I still remember the anger I felt when I received a 89% on my first nursing exam! I quickly learned that it wasn't enough to know the information, we also had to apply the content to real-life situations and develop test taking skills.

Will it help if I've done CNA classes? I did it in my senior year of hs, and we did learn the basics like bed baths, and helping the patients up and such. Also we worked with LPN's (I think haha) in the rehab facility for our clinicals, so there's some type of "hospital" setting.

The hardest part of nursing school for me is the vast amount of information to integrate...quickly. Granted, I am in accelerated 12 month non-stop program, but still. Regardless of program, 2 year, 4 year, adn, bsn, etc.., it's all hard, and never ending it seems. So I guess..TIME management is hardest part for me. Just getting the will to write research papers weekly, while juggling 24 hours clinical time, class time and then try to squeeze in as much Nclex review, patho as you can. I want an uninterrupted month just to read and process! oy.
@AshleyLorenaAdkins
@AshleyLorenaAdkins 9 жыл бұрын
Falyn Angel I definitely know the feeling. It is a lot to be learning so much information in a short few weeks, AND be expected to be at clinicals, AND do care plans, AND do well on tests, AND write papers! It is a lot. But it definitely teaches us how to stay organized and plan each day, which is a super important nursing skill to have!

I've noticed that your hubby is in the navy (right? lol) My soon to be husband is going into the Marine Corp, and I was wondering if you have a video about going to nursing school or being a nurse while your husband is deployed. If you don't, my question is does it help you get through the pain of him being away? Or does it make you miss him more? I'm seriously considering going into nursing school and becoming a pediatric/neonatal nurse. :) Good video by the way!
@AshleyLorenaAdkins

+CutePanda20 I think that going through nursing school while my husband was deployed was a blessing in disguise! I had more time to focus on studying/school, while at the same time I had something to look forward to. It helped to be able to look forward to his homecoming, but I also knew I had to get through so many tests, clinical days, etc. before he would be home. I have not experienced a deployment while being a nurse, yet, so I can't speak for that. I can imagine that it would be the same, though. Staying busy and having something to look forward to really helps!

I totally agree. Nursing school while a loved one is deployed is a BLESSING. Don't get me wrong, I love my husband, but when he's around we are always doing things and staying busy and with him away, I can study and work on school related things full time. When he's here, it's harder to study the massive hours it takes.

Nursing school is hard because you have to cram several chapters of information overnight and test on it the next day and repeat this process throughout the entire program. And some of us do not have the gift of absorbing that much information in such little time.

Do nurses diagnose in any sense?
@Mittens_Explains_It_All
@Mittens_Explains_It_All 8 жыл бұрын
+Sebastian Hoad There is this thing called a "nursing diagnosis" that students are expected to utilize when making what they call "care plans" but no, not in real life. Nurses don't do anything that doesn't first appear as a doctor's order and its doctors (or "providers") who make appropriate diagnoses.
