Viktor Orban's Hungary is the enfant terrible of Europe. However, Orban is absurdly popular in his country: more than four electoral victories in a row, all of them by absolute majority. In the case of the 2022 elections, we are talking about a victory against a coalition that encompassed (almost) all opposition political forces: from the extreme right of Jobbik to the left-wing Greens. Nevertheless, Orban and his party, FIDESZ, have once again swept the floor with more than 50% of the vote.
Of course freedom of speech in Hungary is not a strong point. Moreover, the elections are not as squeaky clean as they should be. However, no one can deny that Hungary is a democracy. And that Orban is the legitimate winner of the elections. As much as this man has critics everywhere, the reality is that Viktor Orban is truly popular in his country. The question is why? What are the positives of his government? Why do so many Hungarians support him? In this video we tell you.

This does not help the pple. Corporations pay very low taxes, so they contribute little. The tax burden in VAT, which hits the poor the most heavily, is then put on the pple. Orban has changed from being a social policy PM who supported the little pple to one who supports the big corporations and creates oligarchs. Unfortunately the opposite parties in the Parliament (except maybe one) are ridiculous and mainly they want only the power and the money. That's why they lost at the elections . Fidesz (Orbán's party) is the ruler party for the 4th time now without breaks. And yes, we have propaganda (something like that) in the local newspapers and in the national TV channels but this is just a smaller part of the story. He had a clear and strong vision, the other older political parties haven't got. In Hungary almost everybody thinks after the election: Orbán is not the best, but better than the offered alternative. :/

Plus there was a huge banking pyramid scheme going on, they knew about it and didn't lift a finger to stop the inevitable - people losing their life savings. If you look at fertility rates you have to keep the Tempo effect in mind: If the age of childbearing increased, then the fertility rate will be underestimated. Since Hungarians are getting richer, they will get children later. Some explanations from Wikipedia: Total fertility rate (TFR) is affected by a phenomenon called the tempo effect, which describes "distortions due to changes in the timing of births."[25] John Bongaarts and Griffith Feeney have suggested that this tempo effect is driving the decline of measured fertility rate in the developed world.[26] Specifically, the trend in developed countries of having children at later ages can cause the Total fertility rate to be underestimated.[27] For example, as measured by the Human Fertility Database[28] the United States adjusted total fertility rates have been at replacement levels since 1992.[29] The TPFR (total period fertility rate) is affected by a tempo effect-if age of childbearing increases (and life cycle fertility is unchanged) then while the age of childbearing is increasing, TPFR will be lower (because the births are occurring later), and then the age of childbearing stops increasing, the TPFR will increase (due to the deferred births occurring in the later period) even though the life cycle fertility has been unchanged. In other words, the TPFR is a misleading measure of life cycle fertility when childbearing age is changing, due to this statistical artifact. This is a significant factor in some countries, such as the Czech Republic and Spain in the 1990s. Some measures seek to adjust for this timing effect to gain a better measure of life-cycle fertility.

Hello! A Hungarian here for some clarification and explanation about the situation (I'm not pro-Orbán, neither pro-Opposition) 1) Orbán's biggest elections victories were largely due to a fragmented and sometimes ridiculously incompetent opposition that we have. There so called United opposition had 6 parties, 4 of whom have virtually no voter camp whatsoever. Orbán has another archenemy, who is his predecessor, Ferenc Gyurcsány. He was the PM when the financial crash happened and two years prior, in 2006 there was a huge scandal called the "speech of Öszöd" where Gyurcsány essentially acknowledged that they lied about a lot of economic data. Protests followed and the police cracked down pretty violently, and its still a huge wound in many of Orbán's voters. Orbán and his party colleagues talks about the 2006's events regularly. Everytime there is an opposition figure with a growing popularity (as happend with Gergely Karácsony, the mayor of Budapest or Péter Márki-Zay, the united opposition candidate), Orbán and his party accuses them of being a puppet of Gyurcsány. The media factor can't be ignored as well, the overwhelming majority of Hungarians, especially rural Hungarians get their news from the public TV, which is eerily similar to Rossija-1 sometimes. So yeah, very difficult conditions for the opposition but they dont help themselves either. 2) Regarding Orbanomics, its a little bit tricky. Yes, there has been growth and Yes, the country had indeed developed, but in a period, where the global economy has experienced an explosion of growth. One great thing that Orbán did is that he increasingly "desovietize" the infrastructure. Lot of the soviet era architecture has been rebuilt and renowated, including those stereotipically eastern European blocks. And Yes, he supported families in order to make children but this is a very risky policy. There is a kind of loan in Hungary called CSOK , which is a cheap loan to buy house or car for families. Many hungarian families gambled on this, including the poorest. The problem with this first of all is that the government didnt have strict criterias for who can apply to this, so pretty much anyone got it. Therefore there is a huge risk that these families dont earn enough so they cant repay the loan. CSOK also created a pretty awful housing bubble, which caused the rent prices to skyrocket (for context, the hungarian minimum wage is around 450-470 dollars a month, depending on the exchange range and the avarage rent price in Budapest is around 500 dollars a month. In rural big cities, like Szeged, Debrecen or Pécs, the rent costs around 350-400 a month). Many of us, who are not loyal Orbán fans, concerned that this can cause a terrible collapse in Hungary. 3) The inflation is getting crazy high in Hungary. The official data is not accurate because they include stuff, that arent bought too often. If we look at just food prices, what many of us are feeling is an at least 15% inflation. The government set a maximum price on sugar, flour, chicken breast, sunflower oil and a couple of other goods, which caused the other food prices skyrocket. For the avarage hungarian, it is increasingly becoming unbearable. But because of the media, many of the pro-Orbán voters are blaming the EU and the war, and try to relativize the situation. 4) There is a policy in Hungary called "rezsicsökkentés" which pretty much means that the government set the maximum price of the gas bill. Its bad for the families when the energy prices are low, but can be helpful, when there is a situation like rn, that energy prices are really high. But it causes terrible deficit to the hungarian economy, we are talking about billions of dollars, which is an awful lot relative to Hungary's GDP. Orbán did the same thing with fuel prices, they set a cap on that, but it causes a pretty big mess. Many fuel stations went bankrupt, because they had to sell fuel sometimes in half a price they bought it from the market. Because of the price cap, many people from Austria, Slovakia, Romania etc. came for the cheap fuel. They banned the "fuel tourism" a week ago, although the European Court will overrule this I think because its discrimatory to the citizens of other member states. This fuel price cap is such a catastrophe that there many stations, even in the biggest cities, where there are simply no fuel. 5) Just one thing to illustrate how bad the corruption is: in 2012, they nationalized private pensions, all of them, with some shitty reason. With this decision they took away 3000 billion forint (in todays exchange rate, its around 8 billion dollars But around that time, it was easily 13-14 billion) from ordinary hungarians. And this is just one example. All in all, we are not a dictatorship, But we are not a democracy either. The economy seems to be doing great but in reality it is really falling apart, especially with all these price cap on gas, fuel, which creates huge deficits. Meanwhile, many Hungarians earn less Than 300 dollars a month (yeah, its lower than the minimum wage, its because of a policy called public work programme, which is essentially making people doing some useless work for a wage that is enough to starve to death - also, dont be fooled by our unemployment numbers, large sum of people are working in this programme, they count it as employment for better statistics). So, in general, I cant say we are doing great, people love Orbán because he communicates expertly and portrays himself as a freedom warrior who protects hungarian interests. That and our bad opposition is enough to produce the results of our elections.

I used to live in Budapest and fled after the "speech of Öszöd" scandal, before the following election. I was outright scared at how Hungary changed. After the speech, I got "controlled" (harassed) by police multiple times without any reason. I got almost run over in the centre of the city and everyone just stood by and watched as I got beaten up by skin heads that got out of the car after they narrowly missed me. I saw political stands in the public transport knots with jackbooted skinheads claiming that they would "solve the jewish and roma problem". I was even there at the national holiday celebrations as a dude stole a tank and drove it at the police (tanks are really scary and tear gas smells bad). It was so extreme and no-one did anything against the extremism that I closed my company, sold my house and moved out of the country. "Low calorie version of Russia" is a good nickname. Orbán may be popular, but I was also scared of the people that I used to love. He's done such crazy stuff with his power that I can't imagine Hungary ever recovering from it, changing the constitution with his super-majority such that his changes will not be able to changed again... to the extent that he's gained control of all media in Hungary. Like Russia, it's not surprising that people like him - because he makes sure that everyone is told to like him. Unfortunately for the country, they're being conned and will end up as much as a pariah as Russia today and will suffer for it. I can only watch from the sidelines and feel sorry for them and all my friends that are still there and are reporting to me about what happens there.

You cannot say popular leaders are dictators. Just because he didn't like Soros does not mean he is a bad person, Soros does not have a good reputation all over the world. No one trusts him.... Forgot to mention that Orbán just created a new "extra profit tax" for mainly energy companies who are makeing Way greater profit than planned, as a result of the war and the crisis so they share the burden of the crisis with the publuc rather then pocketig the extra profit. Also there is a 27k-55k dollar government grant (not loan) for families who say that they will have 3 children in the coming 10 years.(that is the price of a half gardenhouse on the countriside or falf the price of a small flat in Budapest). That is why the fertility rate is constantly growing (as it is visible on your graph). If they take a gov protected almost zero interest loan for the other falf of their first own garden house than they will end up paying about 275 dollar/month for the loan Witch is not much even in Hungary (Average Joe earns about 700-1000 dollars a month). But on the top of it for the 3 children this family gets 100k forint (277 dollar) tax relife every month... So basicly the gov grant, the Protected low interest mortgage and the tax relife gives you a gardenhouse for free.. Btw i am unsurprized you did not mention it.

As a Hungarian-American who’s lived in both countries I have both an internal and external view of why Orbán Viktor remains popular. Orbán offers his people a feeling of consistency and stability, which in post-socialist eastern Europe is still sorely missed. Hungarians also have a lot of national pride which Orbán channels quite well. Being situated at the geographic crossroads of east and west, it’s historically almost always had to bargain with multiple empires around it. As a result, Hungarians collectively have a lot of pride in how they’ve been able to preserve their language, culture, and sovereignty despite pressure from all sides. Hopefully this perspective can be helpful to those interested in the topic.

A few things that may be relevant: - Politicians have to regularly report their wealth. According to the latest one, Orbán has literally nothing. His only possession is an empty bank account. Most of his family members and friends managed to collect billions since Orbán was elected 12 years ago, but no one seems so care about that - not among his voters anyway. - According to people who track these kind of statistics, during the last election the opposition party got about 5 minutes of air time to campaign in TV. Total. Somewhat related that the public service channels that are free and available to everyone seem to be owned by Orbán's friends. - Orbán is indeed popular among Hungarians who were born and live in other countries. Specifically in Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania and Serbia. And they indeed have a really easy time when it comes to voting, if I remember correctly they could do it by mail. People who left the country and moved to live and work in western Europe however seemed to have difficulties, as they had to visit the closest embassy to vote. Coincidentally, these people would likely vote against Orbán. Also, 30 years ago Orbán and his party was fighting against people like Orbán and his party today. Basically everything that he says and does is the opposite of what made him popular at the end of the Soviet era.

@@nicolaschristofi4014 The only reason we have cheaper gas prices is because something called árstop, which means that the government artificially set the price at 480 HUF, which is extremely harmful for the economy, I hope I don't have to explain why. It also created "petrol tourism", which meant that everyone came here for petrol, so they made it that only cars with a Hungarian licence plate could buy petrol for 480 HUF, the rest would buy it at its actual price. This was needed because even they know that in the long run it's impossible to uphold this. And about the migrant crisis: you remember the guy who shot up the Bataclan? Well he kinda ended up in Western Europe through Hungary. So I guess we did avoid the migrant crisis, by shipping the terrorists to Western Europe. Your welcome. Other than that, teachers are ridiculously underpaid, they went on strikes and held protests, yet the government just said they can't raise the teachers' salaries because Brussels cut funds to Hungary. @@klaura4089 I am sorry but some parts of your answer are poor quality: 1, I have not told that the Russian mindset is worse than the western. It is you who placed that meaning into what I said. 2, "the ruble gets 30% stronger against EUR, really smart :/ " I kindly suggest not to make an argument if you are not competent at the area. If you would watch relevant videos, you would know that the current rate of the ruble is totally artificial, it does not reflect much economic reality. The rate right now is quite meaningless because the sanctions effect both Russian export and import. Furthermore, if you would know the view of the head of the Russian Central Bank, she has written recently that the prospect of the Russian economy in the coming years is 'reverse industrialisation', meaning decline in industrial output due to lack of advanced technologies and components from the west. Also, do not forget that Russia right now cannot produce new tanks, damaged ones are repaired by cannibalising half ready ones... So in opposition to your belief, the sanctions DO work! (But slowly, on the long run, as Russia is self-sufficient in terms of basic goods, like food, etc.) 3, "Do you think politicans could risk human lifes for oil and power?" A very unclear sentence for me, please accept my apology but I do not understand it in the given context. But I cant see how these sanctions could be worse for Russia than for Europe. In the next years Europe will rewire its energy infrastructure to a more expensive source, just for become to the same vulnerable situation. While Russia will find other markets like China and India, and sadly it will be closer to them in ideologically too. 3, For the US, an Europe relied to US controlled oil is beneficial. I don't think the war on Afghanistan and Iraq were about democracy, nor against terrorism. The Ukrainian conflict started in 2014, but its not a surprise the NATO pushed Ukraine harder just 8 years later. When the Nord stream came to finish line. And one more thing, the west had not a single word about the Ukrainian situation in the past 8 years. Your two main points are false: 1) Everybody else is not in decline. The CEE region experience a slight increase as a trend. 2) Hungary's fertility rate is not the highest in the EU, in fact, it's below average. Check it on Eurostat or Statista if you don't believe me. Hungary's family policy has little to no effect on birth rates. Other regional countries with less expansive family policies are experiencing the same kind of trends, some even surpassing Hungary (e.g. Czechia).

@@PrexXyx Another factor to take into account is that Hungary still reports those who work abroad, despite they are resident in another country, as domestic population because some EU subsidies are based on that number. Although these people can return later, some of them will not. The ratios can be estimated but accurate numbers certainly cannot be gained. Furthermore, isolated facts or statistics do not necessarily lead to correct conclusions if we look at the larger picture. Considering that in the recent years a continuously growing number of Hungarians show interest/willingness/plan to move to the west (because people realise that nothing essential changes despite Orban's rhetoric flooding everything and corruption is probably even bigger than under the socialists), even if the successful family policies statement would be true, in the end it still may not deliver the desired result. I can imagine that Western Europe after the bad experiences about muslim refugees may be even more willing to accept Eastern European labourforce. Think about it this way: it may lead to a situation when Orban, who condemns immigration supporting western policies, makes Hungary an emigration country at the same time. Hungary may become a donor for the western countries/economies. How ironic that would be! :) :) :)

Let's clear the EU-Hungarian debate. Did the union take out a loan to cover the post-Covid economic downturn? YES. Did the member states, including Hungary, participate in this as debtors? YES. Was the distribution of the loan subject to conditions in the case of other countries? NO. Poland was also blackmailed by the union because there was also a patriotic government. Now that there was a change of government there, everything is forgiven for the Poles. The other countries also received the money. In the case of Hungary, the loan taken by the country was tied to false and extortionate conditions. Despite this, the Hungarians tried to fulfill all conditions. This was also accepted by the leadership of the union, which is why the committee authorized the payment of 10 billion with great difficulty but still, because there was nothing else they could do. On this the EU-Parlament contested this and yesterday sued the Commission for how they dared to give money to Hungary. But that's not enough. This week it was announced that Hungary will not receive the remaining 20 billion at all, because the Hungarian laws do not allow minors (school children and kindergarteners in preschool age) to be educated in an LGBTQ-spirit. The Hungarians said that they are in no way willing to change their position on this issue, even if they even if they don't get their due money.

All in the hope to invite western "expertise", at that time after the fall of the Soviet Union, the euphoria was so high, that we though westerners wer "economic Gods". The general sentiment was that everything hungarian was shit, and everything western was good. And western nations and speculators used for their own advantage. They paid with state money, if nobody bought it back, they fired everybody and scrapped the factory for junk metal. Then told the story that these were bad Soviet style industries doomed to fail. Wrong. The economy was not good, because of too western loans Kádár's government took, but the industries were not inefficient or behind that much technologically, only, that their profit was diverted in stupid way, and communist leaders were just as corrupt. Since the first horrible year of our democracy, lot of people got totally disillusioned with the west. Many of us see the overflow of western culture as a threat, to our culture and economy. The west always viewed the east at best as a market, at worst as a backward colony in need of enlightment. Currently in Hungary you cannot hear any Hungarian music on the radio, in shops, and supermarkets, no hungarian texts on clothing, mostly english namede businesses, young people increasingly insert entirely english sentences into their speech, ancient hungarian volk days are not celebrated, but western ones increasingly are, for example we had a day in February were people and you kids dressed up into anything they wanted, and this was a festival to celebrate the upcoming spring, now everybody jsut does halloween, (what was another hungarian celebration day for the dead, where we went to cemetry to remember our loved ones, and light a candle, it was beautiful in the night), now almost nobody does that, some people even celebrate the 4th of July, instead of August 20, the day our kingdom was organized from a fejedelemség more than a thousand years ago, our famous dishes are replaced in restaurants with american ones at an alarming rate, basically it like an all out cultural war. What the west is slowly winning. If you speak out against this, they label you at best an old dinasaur, at worst a nazi. Even right-wing people are apathical about this, and don't care. Americanization are slowly choking our country. But people are start to wake up. So if anything is dear to the west, we tend resist more and more. That is why the reaction to LGBTQ+, to a lot of people gay is not the problem, the americanism is. Why could we in our own unique world view solve this problem, why do we always have to import it ffrom the US and the west? Racism for example was basically unheard of in Hungary, we did not even understand the concept of race, when it was flourishing in the US more that 200 years ago. But the US is powerful, and it was able to spread this horrible idea to Hungary along the centuries (racism came from a German by the way), just like Germany with nazism, and the Soviet union with communism (what also came from a German). So sometimes the LGBTQ+ umbrella is seen as a foreign political organisation, with a goal to change hungary fundamentally, and not just spread tolerance, just like BLM (in America it is a needed peaceful organization for good, in Hungary it is a foreign interlooper), we don't really differentiate between the action of theses and similar organizations and NGOs, and between the integral organizations of the US, like CIA and NSA. Stay out. And let us solve this. US interventions failed to achieve any good for the recipient 99% of the time, they only advanced US interests.

Idiocy. The Hungarian government is NOT the Authoriter. FIDESZ WON 87 direct mandates (87/106= 82%), and LIST won 48 mandates (48/93=52%) in 199 parliamentary mandates. That's 67%. 2/3 represents a majority. If there were no compensation, Fidesz would have won 54 parliamentary seats on the list. But the opposition took 6 seats away from Fidesz in compensation. The opposition represents foreign interests with foreign dollar money, which the Hungarian people do not like after experiencing so many foreign regimes. We especially do not like it if they want to tell us how to live and how to think from the West. Hungary has been part of EUROPE for more than 1,000 years, and we know enough what EUROPE means. What the West is losing. Orbán has been the only real politician in Europe since 2010.

Fertility rate goes from 1.2 to 1.5 kids per woman from 2011 to 2018. Visualpolitik: It it working? "Clear and resounding NO." I mean, seriously? It improved by nearly 30% and you say it's not working?

The policy was introduced in 2015, when birth rate was at 1.4, which has since increased to a meagre 1.53 in 2021. Given that the purpose of the policy was to encourage population growth, and 1.53 means the population is still in decline, the policy is not working.
