There's a lot of Palworld designs that seem unique. You can make a comparison for every palworld because there are 1000+ pokemon designs out there. Do we talk about other games with anime looking monsters copying pokemon? What about anime that have monsters based off of animals? With so much design out there, its getting harder to be original.

The discourse on originality is in every field of creativity. When you consume enough media and maybe even try being on the creating side and start learning about it, you begin to shift the perspective of "this product X is just a copy of Y", toward thinking in tropes, elements of design, patterns, styles etc. The difference between a good product and a masterpiece is essentially if it made a difference, if it is memorable for the times to come, if it created a new genre etc. What i like more about all this, is that the people who made this game, were just some dudes messing around without really knowing what they were doing. They just focused of making something fun in their way. Pokemon has the strength of one of the most lucrative franchises of all time, and yet some nobodies came out and shown everybody that you can indeed have more, if you really wish so.

Based on what I understand of the research on the scientific nature of creativity, it really is a function of memory. Our experiences shape our brain to make connections in certain ways so when we see examples either in the future or from our memory we can complete the image. I think all creativity involves copying to an extent (I personally don’t really care, but since compensation is important in our economy it sucks to have your work plagiarized and we don’t exactly cite our sources for fine arts or cuisine). The best art takes what worked from the past and merges those elements to create a product that is in some way new. The combination is the new part: the individual parts don’t have to be spawned out of thin air for the first time. I really don’t care if this musical lick or chord progression has been used before, but if the combination is an experience I can’t get anywhere else.

@@sugarqbs "Plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery". We're creature learning by experience and repetition, and we're wired to seek patterns, even to a fault: so of course we copy and repeat. Obviously, when the copy is very similiar to the original, it's honest to cite and refer to it. If you don't want to, then at least give it a personal twist to the point that your effort into making it your version is enough to deserve its own identity.

While I mostly agree with most of the stuff he said, I don't think Palworld copied Pokemon designs wholesale. There are plenty of unique Palworld creatures, but it's just overlooked due to the whole "Pokemon with guns" narrative. Hell, Menasting is a really unique design as far as scorpion creatures go, but some deranged pokefan will still find a way to compare to Pokemon's Skorupi. You can have the most unique creature designs, but once you add a certain "cuteness"-factor to it, and maybe even some pastel colorways, it will always be compared to Pokemon. ALWAYS. And fuck yeah I'd be down for some Palworld merch, mofos. Gimme that Lovander figurine to jar.

Palworld is good because its a combination of many things people love that "other companies" have refused to do right because of money, apathy, or exec overreach, etc. It's a fun cute monster catching game, it's a good survival ark-style game, its a good base builder, it has fun open world exploration (like Elden Ring in many ways tbh). And its really cheap so its extremely competitive with inflation and many people's shrinking disposable income. But should Pokemon be worried? No. Game Freak will make the same trash and still get 10mil copies sold. They have nothing to worry about. But at least those of us who are tired of it have Palworld now.

In Game Design (I'm a Game Design Student) we often use other games or movies as pillars for our games for examples: A platformer games with the physics of Mario with the roguelike aspect of Deadcells but with the atmosphere of Dungeon and dragons. It's common in the industry and most of the time the more you design the more you will distance yourself from it's original pillars.

Its an interesting case because while Palworld does have better reception towards consumers vs Pokemon, its not Palworld that Pokemon has to worry about. The thing that Pokemon truly has to worry about are themselves. Pokemon's most recent game, Scarlet and Violet, sold considerably less than the other games in the franchise like Red and Blue, and even Sword and Shield. It also only barely sold more than Gold and Silver. This is an issue because while Pokemon is one of the highest grosses media entertainment and its latest product isn't selling as well comparatively to its previous entries, that tells them and us consumers that some thing is wrong, especially for it to be on the Switch. There has been tons of games that have released and re-released on the Switch and they sold twice or three time or 4 times better than any other entry in that specific franchise. (Example Mario Kart Wii sold 37 million, while Mario Kart 8 sold 65 million almost twice as much).

Three of the games that are within the "Golden Age" of Pokemon consist of Platinum, HG/SS, and B/W. All of which on a yearly consecutive matter: September 2008, September 2009, and September 2010. Which also matches the same amount of time they made these games as they did with the Switch games even though back in between 2008-2010 they had less resources/ profits. It seems like its the shortest due to global releases of which they chose to release it on those days specifically instead of delaying but when you look at the Japanese releases they both fit in the span of 3 years. The Golden Age also consist of B2/W2 but the reason why I didn't include it was because after B/W they took a break, the thing that fans of Pokemon has asked Gamefreak to do for years and Gamefreak themselves has reciprocated that notion with a lack of release of 2024.

Not as strong of an argument as the people parroting it seem to think, though. Pokemon has its own aesthetic such that I think rather few ppl would have trouble telling if a creature is from DQ or Pokemon. But Palworld very obviously takes the design language of Pokemon specifically to the point where some pals look like something right out of Pokemon. All that said, I'm not a Pokemon whiteknight or whatever. The main series games have been unsatisfactory for a long time and need to improve. I'm just saying the "but Pokemon did it to Dragon Quest!" argument doesn't hit that hard really.

@@matthewlynn6108 ???? So you think someone can steal the LITERAL design concept but as long its in a different art-style it doesn't constitute as copying? If you make a design and I go and copy your design document and what you did I could never replicate your design 1:1 and therefore it would be in my "distinct style". There was no "copying" either way, Palworld uses the Pokemon aesthetic which they were only able to arrive at by taking designs from Dragon Quest that has propagated for decades at this point and been used ad nauseam by Digimon, Yo-KAI Watch, Shin Megami Tensei, etc. etc. for the last 30+ years to the point where every "monster-catching" game has to have their own mascot/Pikachu. In Palworld its LITERALLY only for the sake of Parody, all of the designs being similar to Pokemon only works as a concept because Pokemon exist in the first place and its paying homage to that fact and playing off of it. (giving Pokemon guns, having them work in a factory, hell i still call em pokemon when i play) That is to say Palworld isn't stealing from Pokemon and trying to act like it doesn't exist or compete with it like Yo-KAI watch/Digimon its a nod to Pokemon if anything.

You made one really important point that I haven't seen very many people talk about much at all so far. Palworld absolutely IS being harmed by their bizarre choice to absolutely steal many key design elements from Pokemon. They did NOT need to do this, they have talented artists, they created several very interesting pals. I do believe this choice, contrary to lando's statement, did actually contribute to the initial boost in sales and interest, but they really didn't need that and it kind of broke my heart a bit to see more and more of the designs as I progressed further in. "POKEMON WITH GUNS" alone, something essentially every one has used in a thumbnail so far is at the very least an attention grabbing statement. It's not the truth at all of course but it's obviously working. I've got a lot of feelings about the video and palworld otherwise but this isn't really the place for that for the most part. Sugimori, Turner, and the rest of the pokemon design team have continued to make many great designs over the years. There are many pokemon I don't actually care for but I can still appreciate the design by itself. Even the Pika-clones, the generally most shit on pokemon designs, have, since Gen 4 at least, contained a lot of actual identity and clarity. Clearly using the mascot as a very base inspiration, but also very much being their own "living" thing. I'm honestly so tired of seeing how casually people are shitting on these artists, using the sledgehammer of "if I don't like a thing it's actually objectively bad" over and over again. People everywhere consistently treat the creators of their enjoyment like complete shit and feel that's a totally fair way to live. Pocket Pair wanted to make a fun game, and they did. I've enjoyed my last week in the game and I expect I'll still be playing it for most of this next week. They made a lot of very unfortunate mistakes and I hope they learn from them going forward. Absolutely hope people drop this "just a couple of guys goofing off" rhetoric as their own actual words, not a shitty discord spread "translation", contradicts that entirely. To end this wall of text no one has any reason to read: Primarina has an amazing design actually. I don't like the pokemon personally, that's really not important in this case. But it is a good design, it absolutely conveys their intent clearly.

Which ones look similar to pokemon? Besides there being a sheep, squirrel or even feminine serpant as those are concepts and if you cant use similar concepts to pokemon who has 1000 pokemon designs than how do you make pokemon like creatures? Because that's what we like is that it's a new game told through the guise of pokemons art style, which is due to the artstyle obviously, similarly to how anime writers copy other anime art styles to tell their own stories to the people who like the art style and feel of those animes. Because the few ones I can see being a rip is like the cinderace one and I legit cant think of any others and if it's simply one design than that honestly could be just a coincidence since it's over a 100 designs vs 1000. And sorry im gonna end up writing a wall of text like you 😂 but one of the lead art designers for the game is a woman who grew up loving pokemon and drew her own fakemon for years, so i genuinely think many of the designs in the game have soul and love behind them, much more than pokemon, which Is a souless company at this point, so I'm sure she took many inspirations from pokemon over the years but they're her own works, and I would assume many of the other ones have love put in by her and the other art designers. Not to mention pokemon stole its designs from dragon quest which is literally the same situation bascially and we all love pokemon so dont just write them off so quickly.

hindsight is always 20/20. They did not know the game was gonna be profitable, let alone be a massive hit. They didn't anticipate the word of mouth would be this positive. To answer both question in video title, A) Because Palworld is a mishmash of good ideas all slapped together into a very fun formula. Granted it is still in early access so some things could change prior to the full release but as it is rn it's just fun. B) No, Pokemon is legitimately too big to fail and has way too large a crazy fandom backing it up. I love Pokemon myself and do still enjoy playing the games but I also can recognize that it's been too stagnant and dull for too long now. Legends Arceus was a step in the right direction, only for said direction to be thrown back by Scarlet Violet. Also to ask another question, is Palworld's success beneficial for the Monster Taming genre as a whole? I think yes personally. If more people are actually willing to go out and spend their money on other games within the genre then I think we could finally have some really good competition within the genre as opposed to Pokemon having such a strong hold on it. Coromon, Nexomon, Cassette Beasts, Shin Megami Tensei, there's plenty of games out there that are just as good and even more fun than anything Pokemon has made in the past few years, yet most people just write them off as "clones" or "Pokemon copies" which is very disheartening. Now I will be honest Palworld isn't exactly 100% a game within the genre, it has some Monster Taming elements but ultimately shares more with games like Ark or Minecraft, yet still people continue to compare it to Pokemon because of the monster designs. If y'all wanna look forward to a game like Palworld that will have it's own unique style I'd look forward to Nexomon 3. It's still in development but it's a step-up in the franchise being Nexomon's first venture into 3D and going in an open-world direction. And hell I'll still highly recommend all the games I mentioned prior. They are very fun and great games to check out for those feeling burnt out on Pokemon's nonsense.

Digimon was never even trying in the first place, they're more concerned with being their own thing and focussing on the fans they already have. Even at the height of its popularity in the early 2000's, when people were trying to push this rivalry they openly stated they'd rather have people that grew out of Pokémon than try to cater to the same audience. There is also the fact that a lot of new and returning fans don't even understand how the series is structured due to a hiatus of seven years in the west and straight up poor handling of the franchise by Bandai USA who insisted in renaming every single new release as if it was part of the Digimon World series. Both fans and developers had to fight to bring the franchise back to being a series released worldwide and I much prefer that they stay true to themselves rather than chasing trends. That doesn't mean they're not trying to step up their game, though. They clear plan of where they wanted to go after Cyber Sleuth and Next Order, but they had a string of unforeseen circunstances since 2018 which got in the way of their schedule for game development and they're just recovering from it now.

I haven't played a modern pokemon game since X/Y. I don't care if some pals look like pokemon. Even if the designers had never seen a pokemon in their lives, there would still inevitably be some similarities; there's only so many ways to design a fiery fox monster. To me, palworld has its own identity. I'm enjoying it, and I can't wait to see where it goes in the next few years.

It's not impossible to create thousands of different monsters based on one thing, don't you believe me? Just look at the fakemon that were made with the paradox forms of the beasts, yeah, everyone knew that these would end up being specific dinosaurs, and despite being relatively similar to what the officials showed, they have their differences because it's not easy to end having the same idea 100%

I think it's crazy how people are SO quick to call it a fad or that it's not gonna do well in the future when it's already done so well right out the gate. Like, who's to say the game won't grow like Pokemon did? Also, Pokemon doesn't own the rights to the monster pal concept. It's silly the ONLY reason people are upset is because they think Nintendo owns design concepts. Pokemon is a turn-based game, and Palworld is a 3rd person shooter. Palworld is similar to Pokemon as it is clearly a parody game. At the very least it gets Nintendo to get off its lazy behind and actually innovate its games because I'm disappointed with how complacent they've been with their past games. The Palworld slander just sounds immature all around; people are upset their legacy company has been challenged. Oh well.

I feel like people forget about Pokemon Legends Arceus, I personally don't really care about a more "mature" approach or theme, but it took the approach where you could "fight" Pokemon yourself while running around in an overworld while still maintaining turn-based RPG aspects, I loved that so much and then they just threw it all away with Scarlett/Violet :( Palworld combined that with survival aspects from Rust or ARK, and lack of originality/soul aside I think leaning into that really works for them. Like Lando said, Pokemon has all this brand power with anime and merch plus the lore and cute interactions in its world, I'm not sure Palworld will be able to establish it's own identity in the face of that, but I hope both companies can step up their game and be more experimental in the future :P
@MrsMetronome
@MrsMetronome 11 ай бұрын
That's not how the development works. They didn't make Arceus and then Scarlet/Violet, they were created simultaneously. This is the obvious reason why some default qol features within arceus aren't in SV and vice versa. Shiny's making a noise/sparkle visibly in the world is one of the most common things. There were no intentional steps backwards, they were made side by side and by different teams within the studio who communicate obviously but didn't exactly share members.

I can agree. The one thing I do not like about Palworld is the combat. I want pokemon to stay turn base with the heal or risk another attack judgement calls. Drop the ball when it comes to developing the franchise like I know they were never going to do guns and slavery stuff but they definitely could have made it an actual open world game instead of whatever they called themselves doing for the switch. Like pokémon should be way further and they should have experimented more with open world. And having pokémon be more than just them fighting and seeing them interact in the actual world. But they played it super safe and now they let someone else make the game they could have made years ago.

Digimon World 1 has hard to figure out raising mechanics, 2 is a grindfest dungeon crawler, 3 is a slightly less grindy jrpg. The DS games are also grindy, frustrating JRPGs. Savers PS2 is a standard jrpg, but had a mechanic that punishes you for not choosing moves your partner wanted to use. Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory had good stories and gameplay but felt soulless in that you don't really care about your Digimon. Next Order is World 1 but somehow slower and less fun. Survive is mostly a VN which filters out a large number of people by its format alone. If they made more of the Cyber Sleuth/Hacker's Memory style games, with a system where you can care more about your Digimon partner, I think Digimon might finally make an international hit.

This game was made by a mostly inexperienced dev team that spent 1 whole month on just 1 Pal design and rig. Even if Nintendo Sue's and they are legally required to change the designs the game will still be fun.

And there also many other examples of this, and in my opinion terraria is 100x better than minecraft, so dont count palworld out so quick, because because this is exactly how terraria was marketed, side scroller minecraft with guns and magic. Also Azurobe is 100x better than primarina, and the only thing they share is theyre feminine water creatures, i mean cmon ones a mermaid flattened by a pancake iron and the other is a elegant sea serpant.

If Pokemon were held to the same standard of "originality" as by which Palworld is being called bad, Pokemon would be called a lazy, unoriginal mess. Hell before the whole Palworld situation where people pretend Pokemon is the original author of every animal species, aerodynamics, mythological characters, geometry, etc EVERY generation was criticized for having lazy and unoriginal designs. Same happened with Breath of the Wild. It's a generic open world game that lifted most things from other open world games then added Zelda to the mix, then Genshin showed up and fanboys acted like BotW is the creator of open world, goblins, Japanese orcs, cell shaded graphics, anime, cartoons, green grass, blue sky, clouds, rocks, water, etc.

I absolutely did not intend to make three comments on this video but jesus christ that line needs to stop. Palworld was not made for 10k dollars, you are not making any damn game for 10k dollars. It was around one billion yen. That "translation" that was circulating around discord was incredibly incorrect yet so frustratingly repeated. The team began with 10 members but not long after that they added 40 more. I have no idea why this is like, sticking with people so strongly. I guess the idea of the extremely little guy making it big is appealing but it's so clearly just a fantasy. This isn't meant to be an insult but the idea that 10,000 usd is anything meaningful in the real of making games is super naive.

The budget for palworld was 6.78 million US dollars, which might be way lower than many other game budgets, but surely enough money to support my statement. No actual game, not even most indie games, could be made with 10k USD. Maybe you could point to a handle of independent projects that take 6-10 years that would cost “less” but the man hours and opportunity cost would still be way past 10k. Unfortunately in most creative media, 10K is absurdly low. There are VTuber models that cost more than that.

In terms of longevity, it’s an early access game, they already have a roadmap that includes new pals, new maps, and 2 kinds of PvP. i see this argument alot but lets take Dinossom design for example yes you can say it took aspects from 3 different pokemon but by doing just that you have already made a different and "unique" design therefore making it "not a copy" artists do this all the time when they do their art they take "inspiration" from from a bunch of different sources and combine and tweek them and proclaim it as their own work. sometime they even just change the art style. There is only a handful of Pals you can say are rips offs from pokemon. but that is only a fraction of what this game is, they could change and replace all those Pals that the twitter and the internet want to cherry pick out and nothing would change the game would still do well because people like the game and it fulls a hole and want that people have wanted for a very long time. The pokemon stuff that people compare this game with is only about 10-20% of what this game is. Though keep this in mind the studio and staff behind this game had a pretty tight budget and yes they could of taken heavy inspiration from pokemon for the pals but pokemon was also in the same situation back with red and blue and they also took heavy inspiration from dragon quest for some of the pokemon because thats what alot of companies do on a budget. Its just that back in the day we didnt have the internet and the toxic culture we have today. Sorry my comment is taking so long but to finish off, the 10-20% of the game i said was pokemon like are 3 things, the biggest being the art style which makes people compare it to pokemon but you cant copyright a art style so any argument there is useless. Second biggest being the handful of arguable rip offs but ive already said my stance on it and can be easily fixed in the future by replacing for simply resigning them now that they have a bigger budget and lastly is a catching mech which also cant be copyrighted and Nintendo cant own a mechanic same as with a art style. Personally i like both Pokemon and Palworld i just wish people would look deeper then the surface of a game and not be sheeps to what is said on the internet.
