@@AltSimplified if Singapore was so rich, how did it have a debt/GDP ratio of 125%? Why is it now economically stagnant? Why have some people in Singapore admitted to being unable to eat 3 time a day? Is it possible that like China, Singapore is just a showy country?
@ljn4603
@ljn4603 3 жыл бұрын
@@leapdrive Singapore decided to develop its debt markets to make it a better financial centre. To do that, the government started to issue bonds, though we had enough savings for our needs. That is why our bonds are always rated AAA. Don't know where you got your impression that Singapore is economically stagnant that is untrue. Like many other countries, some sectors of our economy were badly hit by COVID but we are recovering fast, much faster than most other countries. Some people in Singapore, like myself, don't eat 3 meals a day because we are trying to lose weight. I choose to eat 1 meal and drink milk instead. One of the major problems we have in Singapore is food wastage. Many tons are thrown away every day so we are thinking of ways to fix that. Anyway, I don't think Singapore is that rich. We have in the last few years attracted some millionaires/billionaires to move here. So income inequality is another problem we have.

The fact of the matter is that contemporary germans would not put up with the authoritarianism and democracy deficit of the Singaporean regime. To my mind, Germany has much more to be proud of for its an economic powerhouse AND it is a full fledged democracy. It is also a much larger country with more interests to balance.

One of the secrets which many dunno that made Singapore rich is that because of the "divorce" with Malaysia in 1965 after gaining merger in 1963 , the young island nation was "gifted" by Malaysia a cheap water agreement from Johore (for 99 years till 2061) which is priced at just 3 sens (1 Singapore cent) per 1000 gallons for 99 years. Plus Singapore is entitled 250'000 gallons of water each day from Johor hence many times the Malaysian state faces lack of water due to the increasing population in Johor state during drought times and had to buy from Singapore at a much higher price. Mahathir as PM-4 had the chance to review the water price in 1987-88 but he chose not to do so as it does NOT benefit him or his cronies but it was a great loss to the country itself.

I lived in Singapore. The unmentioned factor is that everyone works hard. They have had an unbelievable work ethic. The pioneer generation were given a good opportunity by an intelligent government, but they worked hard to improve themselves. Another unmentioned thing is the significant economic pressure on working families. They are required to look after their parents and want to educate their children. These are two very expensive things to do.

@Spring By charging more. How? You might ask. What used to be probably below 10x cheaper decades ago is now very expensive for most citizens. 2 room HDB flats nowadays cost you around $200k to $300k depending on the location. 3/4 rooms probably around the 300k to 400k++ range. 5 rooms now cost about 500k and above range. Let's not forget that these are government housing not private ones. Wish to get a vehicle? Good luck paying 10x more compared to other countries and to top it off we have this thing called COE which is basically the rights to drive that vehicle for 10 years only. Greetings from Singapore, and thanks for this. Checking out the rest of your videos and subscribing! Overall, a great job. Just a few minor points. LKY was truly one singular genius. He also picked a great team around him, people who don't get the credit they deserve, such as Goh Keng Swee and S Rajaratnam. In a part of the world rife with ethnic and religious tensions, the vision was to make a place where these do not exist. I, for example, live in a neighborhood where a Sikh temple, a Buddhist temple, a Catholic church and a Protestant church are all a stone's throw from each other - and no one has ever thrown stones, not least since the 1960s. The PAP can indeed take credit for any things, I would say their guiding philosophy is I don't care who has come up with a great idea or a solution, whether right or left, democratic or communist, I will study it and adapt it for our own needs. In the process, we have developed solutions that are truly our own, you mentioned housing and the CPF. Lastly, our leaders in government and in business know full well we have no resources to fall back on, no domestic market. We either succeed on the international stage, or we lose our independence. Keep up the good work and may 2021 be a great year for you!

@@AltSimplified Could I suggest that you might want to mention Singapore's Consistent anti corruption stance since Independence. Excluding NZ, Singapore is the only Asian country ranked in the top 10 of Corruption Perception Index CPI. When there is corruption in government, none of the other Government Policies could have been fairly and effectively executed Consistently over the years, especially when some unpopular or difficult policies have a very long gestation before the benefits can be seen. Quite a number of government policies were actively and consistently Executed, notwithstanding significant criticisms from certain Western countries and the international press. I wish to congratulate your Presentation for Uniquely identifying That the Land Acquisition Act as the starting point of Singapore's Government policy effectiveness, because if the government didn't take ownership of the large squatter and agricultural land, then the benefits of any development would have been a windfall to landlords and landowners, as is the case elsewhere. Although Singapore's legal framework was still linked to Uk's Privy Council then, they passed a special amendment to alienate the shoreline, thereby enabling land reclamation to Immediately proceed after Independence in 1965 Without Compensation, by using the proceeds of Japan's World War 2 Reparations to Singapore. Otherwise, Singapore's government had no funds to do so.

As a singaporean, non of singapore's policies could be in place beyond our lands. it is impossible to be implemented. That requires civilians who trust the government implicitly, and also requires the civil service's absolute loyalty for the betterment of the country instead of wanting benefits for themselves fighting over power. All this requires luck honestly beyond governance. For singapore is small, rightly positioned geopolitically no other nation could replicate that. Beyond political will requires a strong military and a strong military requires funding in which singapore was blessed to have early on in the day when we inherited all the important water ways from british rule and remaining as the worlds most important sea routes under our care. Non of this could be replicated it has been tried and failed. The education level and competitiveness is yet another metric no other country could catch up not even america or china for the matter of fact and thats something interesting as a singaporean.

The success of Singapore is foremost a study of nation building. Upon being expelled from Malaysia, it does not have police and armed forces, currency, even water needs to be imported and it had millions of mouths to feed. Everything becomes a matter of survival. Lee Kwan Yew's quote - "There is no free lunch", becomes the pragmatic approach in its governance principles. Singapore knows that if it does run, it will fall back. Without endowment of rich natural resources, it cannot expect timely rescue effort from other countries. Hence, it's a relentless drive to keep ahead - to survive and if fortunate enough, to thrive. Singapore's no-nonsense, disciplined government policies are all carefully designed to ensure survival, most of all. It's just that it is so well planned and administered that it actually becomes 'successful'. Remember, there is no free lunch, nothing is guaranteed and nothing comes for free - one needs to work really hard for things one wants.

Fun fact ; most Malaysian Malays would regard Singapore as a stolen land (from them) by the Chinese. And would often claim Singapore as a vice city with no regard to halal or Islamic way of that they should be. Finally and ironically, as the very reason to kick out Singapore during 1965, Malaysia is still battling racial issue till this very day.

as Malaysian Malay(native peninsular/non javanese, non minangkabau sumatran, non sulawesi bugis/makassarese) not all malay believe singapore is stolen land, it was Tunku idea and fault who think in short term, and Lee Kuan Yew is Peranakans that why he spoke Malay just like Malay without any chinese slang. Singapore was Kick because 2 reason PAP would win all Malaysia election because charismatic of Lee Kuan Yew, his speech. 2nd Singapore will replace Kuala lumpur as Malaysian center. UMNO who want support play racial card, Malay fear losing they homeland the only Peninsular they have, other half in siam/thailand today which malay become minority in krabi, phuket today, Phuket or Tanjung Salang in Malay(Junkcelyon by European) were Mahsuri born and came, before settle in Langkawi, Malay just get independent, freedom for any invaders. from Siam(except patani, singgora(now songkhla in thai slang), santun still in Thailand and 5 province malay majority still want get out from Thailand and reunited with Peninsular or indpendent like Brunei small malay state), Portugese, Dutch(divide Johore into Johore and RIau), British and Japanese. both side Malay and Chinese at time be play fool by politicial, today we not stupid, all information in just in second.

MAS is the central bank, not a wealth fund. MAS holds funds to manage the value of its currency, to stimulate the economy, or to prevent inflation. A sovereign wealth fund just wants to earn a high return. Every country has their own central bank, like the Federal Reserve in the USA or the People's Bank of China in China, so it's not really worth mentioning.

Might I add that Singapore, like China, is one of the safest countries to live in, in the world.. very few crimes and children don’t do drugs in schools (unlike in many Western countries where this is rampant). I heard that this is one of the compelling reasons for expats with school-going children to work and live in Singapore - parents don’t have to worry that their kids will be shot at or will do drugs at schools. Of course, good governance is key - hats off to the late Mr Lee & his ministers who built Singapore as well as to the current PAP party. The way Singapore managed COVID-19 (despite the initial blunder) is a good testament to its good policies and its people - most of whom trust their leaders and government.

Most people remain poor only because friends and relatives discourage and advise them against investing and trading forex while the Wise keep investing and growing higher financially

I invest with Miss Susan too, she charge a 15%commission on profit made after every trading session which is fair compare to the effort she put in to make huge profit…

Extremely Nice video and beautiful cities,vacations and going on tours seems to be a kind of relaxation to me,I find meeting new people from different race as fun and educating,each year I find out time to travel to at least 3 countries I have never been to,nevertheless comfort or would I say living the way I do is too expensive,as long as you can afford it,it’s fun

In my own humble opinion I think you stated fact here and I love the last sentence you made,traveling anytime you like is expensive to me,you must have a good paying job if not how you meet up to these expenses

@@galipomer3362 Of course, not now. You should wait a little more when the world gets it feet back on the ground. What I mean, until the Airports sort out it manpower and budget airlines could fly the sky again. With proper planning, you can travel on a string

Interestingly, I was talking to an Australian female who lived in Singapore. She was more than willing to forgo political freedom and have a safe environment as a female, compared to Australia.
