You've got that right. I'm in the US and my mom migrated here from South Africa in 1959. She was from Johannesburg. When I was a kid back in the 70s we used to travel there every few years to visit the relatives and it was truly a great country. Now it's so bad that even the blacks are saying it was better under Apartheid.

Not just any politicians ANC politicians. They also replaced Eskom management with incompetent but loyal party lackeys. Eskom used to be a respected power company and exported electricity. Now, look at the hijacked buildings. Criminal gangs take over a building and start collecting rent. Also a number of politicians have had their fingers in hijacked buildings. Crime is rampant, if you dont live in an arned gated community you are unsafe. But police are useless, usually the areas with money hire their own security services and cleanup up and garbage services, because otherwise it just piles up. It's literally de-developing.

In other words, the country has become what most African countries are. It is a tribalism mindset that does not serve the citizens in a modern economy. The country has been in a downward slide since they killed or drove out the people who were making it a vibrant economy. I had hoped it would not be that way, but there it is.

Africa has only itself to blame for its chaos and poverty. It has all the resources needed to be rich but because of its tribalism, which ironically was suppressed by colonial powers and re-emerged when the colonists left. Like the Middle East, I say it's not our business and we should let it stew in what it created by its own actions.

Resource rich nations aren't rich by default. They are usually poor to begin with and have no way of accessing the resources. Nations made rich by industrialization then are capable of extracting resources to fuel their industry. This is why the colonization if a continent was possible.

@@obcane3072That is only part of the situation. The largest factor is geography. The continent of Africa is much larger than Europe, but Europe has more navigatable waterways and natural ports. The long waterways in Africa are frequently punctuated by waterfalls and the rainfall is very seasonal whereas Europe rainfall is spread out throughout the year. Europe had domesticated animals and Africa had none. Plants and cultures are easier to transplant at similar latitudes, east-west, that across different latitudes, north-south. Europe-Asia cross traded whereas South Africa was more of a one way trip. There are other geological differences, such as more diseases, poorer soil, ect. All of that contributes to more difficulty in getting resources from the interior of Africa to the coast and then from the coast, in small boats, out to larger ships. It takes 400 workers 4 weeks to transport what one train car can transport in 4 hours. There was essentially no river transport during the dry season the rivers often flood during the wet season. When the rivers were navigatable, the cargo had to be offloaded and carried by hand around the waterfalls and reloaded on boats to the next waterfall.

Met a middle aged South African here in Australia in April 2022. He told me two of his long time male friends had spent their adult lives working for the SA power company. They abruptly got called into head office, told that SA was a black country and their jobs were being given to way less qualified and experienced black workers. They were sacked immediately and all their technical expertise was lost. No wonder the electricity supply is now erratic in SA. Their loss, my country's gain. Both men plan to emigrate here; Australia 😀👍

Yup - I’m in South Africa and I know some senior power company techs (the last of the whites technicians left), they explained a lot of things coming… the last 15 years have been spent trying to limit loads for houses by encouraging using gas burners / stoves, and switching incandescent bulbs to LED. He said their is no more power that can be limited, which is why load shedding is at stage 6 (14 hours of load shedding per day). Weirdly, there’s only been a 8% increase in total power usage in 20 years (despite tens of millions of extra people using the grid. But, it’s of a cliffs edge now, that more load on the system and less available power stations workin at peak means greater load shedding. Thanksfully, 12 years ago - I saw the direction - and added a substantial solar and battery system. So we have no issue. But it’s pretty weird at night that every street light and neighbor is off - and we’re still swimming with all entertainment pool and cabana lights going.

To quote Prof. Malegapuru Makgoba, a former board member of Eskom: "What the government does not understand is that politics and ideology can never solve the electricity crisis. They've been trying for 15 years and still don't realize it's not going to work. Electricity generation is a complex scientific and technological process. Electrons do not understand, listen or read DAS KAPITAL. There are many ANC politicians who have no understanding of the complexities surrounding power generation and what is needed to solve the problem. The level of incomprehension is underlined by time frames that are repeatedly laid down to end loadshedding." To this I want to ad that the ANC is not the real problem, the voters are. South Africa has, according to international statistics, an average IQ of 69. This entails that the population in general is suffering from mild mental disability. Currently 7 million tax payers are keeping 28 million on government grants. The majority of the ANC's voter base are non tax payers. The only way to resolve the issue is if we start voting with tax numbers instead of ID numbers.

Historically the right to vote came with a responsibility. The obligation to work for the local fire-service and be drafted into the military. This is why women did not have the vote. It was not "oppression". Universal suffrage ended that. People who don't work vote themselves benefits and privileges everywhere. before this conflict Israel was being torn apart because a group of citizens who generally do not do military service or pay taxes enact laws getting the courts involved. Universal suffrage will stop working when enough people become unproductive.

Also, I said that South Africa needed to avoid the African trap of allowing corruption and putting unqualified people into managerial positions. Furthermore, it should remember that infrastructure had to be maintained and kept current to be effective. Well, it looks like South Africa did not follow any of those ideas.

Why did the US support the Marxist revolution in South Africa in the first place? Most US folk still seem to think Mandela was a Saint. Cape Town is hardly South Africa's largest city. A little research would go a long way to understanding the challenges that are being faced daily on the Southern tip of Africa. Not all is doom though. We have private solar installations that would be the envy of most freedom lovers. The more the Marxists fail, the more opportunities to DIY ourselves out from under their boot. I would rather live under inept failing (even corrupt) Marxist rule than effective Marxist rule. More space to get on with our God-given duties, but it's definately not a place for 'sissies'.

Why SA is plunged into chaos? Is this a serious question? "Afrikaners" were tough, smart and protestant Europeans. They created a country that was better than most European countries (i.e. the top of civilization). They were abandoned by their own race (first Rhodesia, abandoned by the treacherous Margret Thatcher), until they gave up in 1990. Then the very recent immigrant hordes from surrounding subsaharan Africa, were handed the jewel of Africa, polished to its perfected artistic symmetry - by sweat and tears of the Afrikaners! The hordes turned it - as always - into sh!t in no time. Questions?

As a former inhabitant of the beautiful Country of South Africa, this is what affirmative action gets you. Racial discrimination went from one regime to another, but the Country actually worsened, it didn't get better. I used to think Mandela was a great man, I've changed my mind over the years. This new South Africa run by the ANC, compared to the former, has increased crime rates, devalued currency, insufficient infrastructure, increased corruption in politics. I have gradually understood why apartheid was necessary. Ideally what should have happened was a gradual prepararion and education of the black communities to eventually get the equal vote, but foreign pressure to do things in a rush hurts everybody and a tiny minority takes advantage of the situation.

@@pkkgyasi war? What war? We should have left the Zulus to their genocide of all the other African tribes. Give them an independent state, like Sesotho, and let them govern their own people. Instead Apartheid created the union all African Tribes. The idea of Apartheid was correct, however the implementation were wrong. Multiculturalism does not work, England will learn that in the next few years, with Muslims turning that country into a communist state. ANC are only still in power on the basis of being black, pure racism. And then still needs the white people to provide taxes. 5% of the population is the majority tax base, which is white people.

Too bad, formerly one of the most economically vibrant economies and one of the better countries to visit on the African continent. The basic issue was that the South Africa economy, like that of Zimbabwe, was a sham. It APPEARED advanced and well functioning, but it only functioned well for the very small minority of whites living in South Africa. It APPEARED to be a wealthy country, but the underlying reality was that it was really quite poor if the wealth was evenly distributed among blacks and whites. When it became a black run government, the government was faced with the nearly insurmountable task of evening out the wealth disparities and job opportunities without destroying the functionality of the economy in the process. Even if the ANC had not been completely corrupt it would have been a small miracle if South Africa had managed to achieve an orderly evening-out of the economy without outright expropriation as was resorted to in Zimbabwe. However, given the corruption in the black governing class, the task was and remains impossible. There is no societal tradition of governance by law. Loyalties are EXPECTED to be to oneself, one's family, one's tribe, and in that order. Laws that seek to control this are non-existent or simply ignored. We in the West have a socially ingrained respect for law, and give the concept of law a huge amount of power, and we still have massive corruption issues. Africa really stands no chance. An African country can do well for awhile if it gets lucky and stumbles across a leader who is both competent, honest, and truly interested in bettering the people of his nation, but trying to keep this going into his successor's reign has so far been impossible. I personally believe this is an inevitable result of "nations" whose borders ignore tribal boundaries, thus losing the only binding force that can encourage people to think and act beyond their personal self interest. This will not change anytime soon.

@@russelldevaney7001 I agree for the most part about the cultural norms and tribal mentality, but if SA's ruling class had not been downright corrupt and weren't a bunch of criminals with little braincells, it would have attracted a massive amount of foreign investment just like China did. When your industry and infrastructure keeps getting upgraded and you invest the gains to improve education, healthcare and making businesses more competitive, it becomes a cycle of wealth creation. All the East Asian countries did it this way after WWII, and that's without any of the benefits and first world infrastructure that SA had when power was transferred to the ANC. Some cultures are just not capable of ruling. It's been proven again and again.
