I wonder if your company is the one that charged my manager 2000 to fix our HVAC system when the compressor burned up on our unit that was only a year old. 😂Had the fool listened when I told him the thermostat was saying there was a cooling problem to begin with instead of ignoring the problem or 3 or 4 months the warranty would have probably still covered the labor as well.🤣

It's crazy to see you working on equipment and with customers in a state like California. I come out of Colorado and the demand for heating and cooling on a daily basis is insane. I can't imagine a 70° day in August or a 55° day in November without complaints for either heating or cooling.

With stage one having a full charge and a plugged up drier....i too would of thought those fixed bore would've been plugged. That oil is most definitely trashed and that compressor has been overheating for quite some time now. That unit is definitely on life 8 of 9....living on borrowed time.

The oil in that stage has likely turned into blackened tar from overheating, which is probably what clogged up the drier. And I agree about the whole system needing to be replaced; with the age and condition of the unit, and all the work that needs to be done to it, all the cost of labor and parts isn’t really worth it. Just replace it! Of course I’d still be happy to do the work, but I’m also looking out for the customer’s best interests.

Thank you for sharing these awesome videos! I'm a 20 plus year carpenter in Canada that wants to change my trade to HVAC now. Respect for real craftsmanship is almost non-existent this day in age. The skills required and general workload seem to just keep extending more and more as people demand nothing less these days. With very little pay increase for even higher quality back breaking work over the years, has me questioning why? We survey, dig, pour concrete, frame, roof, side, and interior finish custom homes making the least amount of money in all trades. I used to have great self-satisfactory and pride after a good build as I love working with my hands, but now looking at the future, I truely feel like I could have a lighter work load physically and a better retirement fund, if I switch to a higher paying trade. I enjoy and learn quite a bit from your videos and am inspired by your professionalism and customer service. Thanks again, and I look forward to more great videos.

Funny you say that since the general HVAC trade in Canada is not at all a well paying trade. For the first reason that getting a gas technician license isn't considered a trade. The only ones who make money in HVAC in Canada are the guys with the full refrigeration license and a G1 gas license.

Great video dude! The step process of the diagnosis and repair is pretty much how most of us seasoned guys go about approaching an old carrier like this, and not knowing the stipulations behind the call origin and the customers budget and all of that good stuff, did you recommend combing the condenser coil and splitting the coil for cleaning? I’m just curious if that’s something to even educate the customer on before next cooling season or just unit replacement with hail guards are already in the plans? Keep fighting the good fight and making good videos brother

Electrical engineer, but NOT a trained HVAC guy here, north Texas. Had my condenser fan crater on my December 2010 installed Trane 4 ½ ton home central AC unit (not a heat pump), and the compressor went in to overtemp shut down. I caught it within a couple of hours, and shut it down for the week it took to get a replacement fan motor (replaced it myself). The unit came back up and seems to run fine now. To the touch my dryer does not seem to have a temp drop across it, but wondering now if maybe I should have the dryer replaced just to be safe.

It might last until next spring, your customer is lucky we're nearly at the end of peak cooling season. I'm sure it'll die once temps get back into the 110+ range. The insanely high summer temps you get there combined with that condenser coil being so damaged is going to do a number on it. In hindsight, what you could have done is sweat in two 3/8 flare adapters and install a -HH drier, those are pretty good for wax removal, and Sporlan used to have a demo setup back in the 1980's with old black compressor oil being cleaned up back to a straw color with only 24 hours of compressor run time. HH is not for acid removal like some people think, it's high wax capacity. When the oil gets cooked, especially POE oils, it forms waxes which plug up metering devices and valves. That way with flares would be simple to keep replacing the drier until they can get a new unit. With unit availability as bad as it is right now, on top of new energy efficiency rules kicking in next year, you might have to change that drier a few more times, even if they approve a new unit tomorrow, it might be months before you can get a new unit shipped, then schedule the crane etc to get it changed out.

I gotta get someone to look at my 1997 Mitsubishi mini-split R22 unit, pretty sure it is slightly low on refrigerant because it ices up and spews condensation when it runs hard, so we were just running it on low fan and letting it cycle by setting temperature a degree or two below room temp with an additional 600 watt window AC to supplement the cooling, but I’ve moved and want to rent the place out, so the janky window AC need to go... ultimately it should be replaced with a heat pump because there’s just a baseboard heater, but the building doesn’t allow new AC units to be installed anymore, so we’re stuck with vintage AC.

To be fair, combustion engines and their oil can readily run at temperatures beyond boiling point of water. Oil cooled motorcycle engines run HOT in summer and many still live much longer than newer bikes that just make flat out too much power per displacement. Its the electrical insulation that has me worried. But again. 100 Celsius is pretty much fine for well made transformer/motor windings. It will fail quicker, almost all electrical stuff loves to run temperate - not too cold, not too hot - but you can engineer insulation to take this no problems.....
