I'm sorry but this is really misleading title and not a good assessment of what's happening in the UK right now. The traditionally socialist Labour party shifted firmly centre-right under Starmer. They expelled Jeremy Corbyn and purged much of the left wing of the party and are distancing themselves from socialist ideals it was founded on. The Tories shifted towards the far right and Labour's slotted into The Tories old establishment position as the centre-right "adults in the room". This pattern is very consistent with what we've been seeing occur across Europe, it's not accurate to present the UK as an outlier or bucking this trend.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer in a recent poll has just 1 percent support among Labour party voters. 48% said they were voting Labour simply because they weren't the Tories. Only about 20% said they were voting Labour because of its policies. Starmer is not a centrist, he is definitely on the right, he was the former head of the Crown Prosecution Service that, among other things, persecuted Julian Assange. Under Sir Keir Labour has brought in billionaire donors. Labour is campaigning on anti-migrant rhetoric, no different to Reform UK, there's Labour's blatant racist attacks on Bengalis. Labour has been bought by billionaires and the corporate lobby.

Labour vote is only up by 1.8% under a first past the post system. The big news is that Tories who tacked from the right to the far right saw their vote split as the new kids on the block Reform, the far, far right by any other name, entered the fray. Labour has won because of the FPTP system & lack of proportional representation. In terms of policy they are the New Tories, anti immigration, pro private health care, and mute on Gaza & Brexit. Britain is still a bin fire and the polarisation that caused Brexit is now baked into the Westminster system for another 5 years.

@@edelgyn2699 I was talking from a more modern mindset, and a brief look back in history would suggest a majority of Conservative governments but how many could actually be described as right wing? And surely only Attlee's could be described as a pure socialist, left wing one? Wilson maybe in the beginning of the 60's government but the later 60's and 70's led to the charge of champagne socialism, one which was also aimed at Corbyn both did not fair well with the electorate. The only truly right-wing policy I remember recently us voting for en mass has been Brexit. That turned out well didn't. If you want to win a general election in the UK you must take the centre ground. Blair did it. Cameron did it. de Pfeffel Johnson did it and it looks like Starmer has done it
