why is there shrinkage with starter locs?

I bet you didn’t think you would have shrinkage with locs! But it is true- loc shrinkage or dread shrinkage is normal and to be expected during the beginning stages of the hair locking process. Your starter locs shrinkage will make it look like your locs are not growing. If you look at pictures of dread shrinkage before and after someone started their locs you’ll see that the hair is about the same length - crazy, right?! But in this video I’ll share with you why shrinkage is happening and discuss a question I’m sure is on your mind: how to stop shrinkage in locs.

Yes I've had loc for 27yrs and when they are wet they're a little longer, so shrinkage is a permanent thing. But since my hair is down to the small of my back I'm not concerned with length anymore, lol

Absolutely correct. My first set I started in 2010 with long hair, I didn't see real length until year 3. I cut them in 2015. Now I'm starting with short hair and the shrinkage.... I didn't see as much because my hair was long, but I know the process so I have to be patient. It's will happen.

My texture is very tight kinks & coils. Last May my nape area stretched to my arm pits b4 locg. At this point they still don’t touch my shoulders. I feel maybe an inch of condensed sections on each loc. They have a ways to go 🤷🏽‍♀️I knew about loc shrinkage and that my locs would take on the personality of my loose texture. They’re actually trying to curl as they mature. Very interesting process.

I just cut my knee length locs after 23 yrs. You gotta go through that shrinking frizzy yuck stage. It may take several years. But once they mature theyll just grow and grow

I never really cared about shrinkage with my first set nor my second til I seen the picture u just held up lmao I’m looking wtf my locs better not lmao … but in all honestly I’m more so wondering if I will get more budding or if this is “it “ ??? I just turned 9 months .. some locs getting thick at the ends which is weird lol and some aren’t .. Everyday I look at them like hurry up !!! Lol I also with my first set I felt it locd faster cause I had color in it and my hair was drier

Thank you. I am 1 year loc'd. Hair is healthy and thicker but the same length!!!! LOL. Love how you use humor to convey this point. Even though logically I know what is happening. How you explain it actually helps me to "trust the process" and enjoy it a bit without judgement to myself.

The locs at the front of my head (my bangs) stayed shrunken even after two years. The rest of my locs grew in. I looked crazy with uneven hair. I got extensions to even everything out. I wish I had gone with extensions all over from Day One.

I would humbly advise you not to put anyone else's locs on your hair. Locs for many is a spiritual journey and you don't know what type of spirits some people play with. Most play with demons and they're attached the to locs. Putting that on your head can cause chaos in your life. I know it's no different from using human hair weave. But even that is a spiritual process as they do rituals before processing the hair. You're safer making your loc extensions rather than taking it from someone's head and putting them on to yours. I hope you understand.
