They brought out eachother's worst traits, and they were only able to grow as people after they were separated, after which they both moved on to completely different things. There's very good reason they didn't end up together.

I love the not so healthy family dynamic that all the Diamonds represent. You have the parental figure who "tries" to care but really only listens to you to make themselves feel better and will blame you when they don't- Blue, The parental figure who is too tough and too busy to even hear you out unless you have something of worth to present but "only wants the best of you"- Yellow, The Grand Parental figure for which there is no talking to or questioning about what should could or would be in regards to anything- White, And the youth/ youngest one who made/ might make short sighted choices and mistakes in life for (understandably) their own happiness because of what some if not all of the other three dumped on to them- Pink. And then to compare them to Steven and his family (Greg and the gems) who aren't perfect, very far from it. But will actually try to be better and actually care for one another. They care enough to speak up, care enough to change or grow, but most importantly they care enough to truly listen to one another, Not for themselves but for each other. I think its a great message that you shouldn't just accept the way someone close you treats you as final, especially if it isn't the way that they should be treating you. I believe Steven's Change Your Mind song expresses this perfectly.

The thing is. In this case... I agree with blue. They shouldn't have fused, and should have apologized... they came to THIER planet imagine going to a diffrent country and completely disrespecting them in front of the entire court of people. You will have consequences weather you think it's fair or not Diffrent places have diffrent rules on modesty, In places women still wear head scarfs and if they take it off it's seemed as wrong, but where I live I can have my hair down and out with out a care They were very brash, I know they where doing the right thing but in the wrong way

Rightfully so, they go the generic friendship is magic route and attempt to paint tyrannical rulers as suddenly being the victims of white diamond. They spent the entire series setting the diamonds up as horrific beings that destroy worlds all over the universe to expand their empire, and then they try to minimize their actions by only bringing up how they treated pink, as if *that* was what crossed the line.

I have a theory that each of the diamonds represent a part of “being” Yellow represent the Physical or body. Blue (obviously) represent the Emotional. White represent the Mental or mind. Now Pink was the hardest to figure out, but I think that was part of the clue. I think Pink represent the Spirit or instinct . Or the innermost part that makes you, You. Now this would explain why Yellow seems the most afraid of White. The concept of mind over matter. As for Blue thought patterns affect emotions and emotions can be rationalized away. But Pink? Well let’s say that no matter how much logic and reason is used, if you know deep down something is wrong you will still tend to resist. Also when your spirit is repressed you tend to lash out. Which explains why she started improve when she got her colonee and freedom to decide how to respond to the consequences of her actions.

I think pink represents action. What you do with each one of these aspects and the result. She loved,hated,learned,changed,fought,killed,gave birth to a new being... Plus: pink isn't here anymore,not physically,not her mind and not her feelings but her actions is what brings the drama to the show and everybody's lives

White and Yellow are pretty easy to deal with - Mind and Body, yes. Or perhaps Ego and Will. However you want to word those works easily. I think that Blue is Emotion, but Pink is Empathy (love for others), beyond just having feelings about them. Blue isn't really concerned with the feelings OF other people, just her own, even if those feelings are ABOUT other people. When bad things happen to people Blue cares about, she still just cares about how she feels about it. It's cool that she cares, but there's another step she isn't taking - caring FOR them instead of just ABOUT them. That's a huge difference. Pink/Rose/Steven is a very different situation from Blue. The show is making the bold claim that loving and caring for other people isn't just a feeling you have regarding them, but something you do even if it hurts you to do it, because you actually love and care for them, full stop. Not just about how it makes you feel, but caring for THEM. Pink sacrificed her self/identity, and then her own very existence, in hopes of finding something that could break the cycle of pain caused by the Diamonds' march towards "perfection" that they had inflicted on the galaxy for who knows how long. Merging with biological life-forms added something to the mix that the gems had never had before - a truly unpredictable possibility. The pursuit of perfection is a worthless illusion, and Greg is the ultimate poster boy for that fact: he and his life are awesome in spite of everything you might factually say about him. Honestly, any injection of true randomness would have worked, so long as it was an "unknown unknown" to the GemWorld. Injecting actual unpredictability into gem culture (via Steven) would inevitably lead to their realization that "perfection" is a lie.

The prevailing theory about the diamonds is that they represent different parts of the psyche: Pink being the Id, Yellow and Blue being the ego, with White being the super ego. This also explains why white isn't like the others since the ego is the farthest away from emotions.

I believe this is in the second art book as officially confirmed. The show has a lot of depth. There's also gnostic religious themes (tho idk if that's described in the book at all) if you frame white as a "demiurge" figure and it kind of splicing Freud/Jung/William-Blake together if folks want to explore a more esoteric interpretation. Given Rebecca's connections with Jesse Moynihan on Adventure Time I think it's not too much of a stretch that she was bringing some esoteric context in to add even more depth to the ideas going on. (also big CW for Jesse's esoteric/gnostic webcomic which is just insanely NSFW for basically everything lol)

If you mean with the Crystal Gems, I don't think of it as forced fusions, I think of the Crystal Gems being poofed as them being in a vulnerable state, and them letting Steven, someone they trust, in to help bring them out of it. I think that falls in line with how Rebecca Sugar treated fusion in the series. Edit: I think I replied to the wrong comment! If you’ll allow me to get pretty sappy here, I apologize for how long this comment will probably be in advance. I got into this show after season two had finished airing. It took me a while to actually watch it because at the time I was a teen that thought it was cool to not give modern cartoons the time of day because they were weird and random and they weren’t my cartoons that I’d grown up with. Then one day I’d stumbled across a Top Ten video about the saddest episodes in animation at the time. And wouldn’t you know it, a Steven Universe clip was on there. The episode they’d picked was On the Run from season 1 and I remember watching the clip of Ame basically having a breakdown while she lashed out at Pearl and crying really hard. I didn’t know anything about this show or it’s characters or the story and yet that scene had hit something in me and made me cry! And so I thought, “if this show can make me cry when I don’t have any context, maybe it’s worth a shot actually.” So yeah, I think it was a couple days later I sat down and binged the first two seasons and… I really kicked myself for not giving the show a chance earlier. This show meant a lot to me actually. It helped put specific things into perspective about the type of person I wanted to be. And a few of the songs (Here Comes a Thought mainly) really got me through some stressful times during college. Helped calm me down. While it certainly wasn’t a perfect show, none are I’m afraid, it’s always going to have this very special place in my life. Anyway, I’m looking forward to watching your reaction to the movie. Glad you enjoyed the main story of SU so much.

God I remember being absolutely terrified for Steven, especially since afterwards we see that he looks *_awful_* when separated from his gem. I wouldn’t actually be surprised if he genuinely WAS dying, since White clearly dropped him without a care and the only thing that actually kept him from feeling the full effects of his priorly bad injuries was his gem instantly healing it. He fell at least 5 stories being generous with a low estimate. I don’t wanna know what would've happened had there been anything stronger to separate Steven and Pink Steven.

It was a journey watching you seeing this show. This is one of the cartoons that have changed how people generally labeled this genre as something for kids only and it showed how the story entailed the different sides of life and the kinds of people existing on earth. Fun fact; In the Pilot episode of Steven Universe "The Time Thing" Steven uses a magic hourglass to go back in time in order to deliver the best comebacks. Garnet uses this to her advantage to call Steven a "Buttface" so he can go back in time to give them help with knowledge he had from the future. The line he came up with was "I know I am, whats your excuse?" Its awesome to me that we come back around on that line being used on the Big Bad of the whole series. Also now you get to experience the Movie and Future, where the Big Bad is the lack of therapy we've had the whole time.

I think part of the emotional hit of Steven refusing with his gem is that even though everyone said it, it still wasn't a sure thing that Steven wasn't just a human around a gem core and he wasn't 100% sure of it either. Seeing himself through the two perspective dismantled one of his greatest fears, that he was rose quartz and not his own person. :)

Well, here we are in the Fu.. wrong line, again. Here we are at the finale of season 5. Still can not belive that we are almost done with this show. Still got some really decent content in the nearest future, but there will be no more soon. God, I'll miss these Sundays after we'll be done. I heard a lot of people saying different things about the season finale, about good and bad sides of it. I agree with some of them, with some I don't, but that doesn't really matter. For me personally this is the best season finale out of all seasons (SUF does not count, it is something else). I still rewatching that finale sometimes and I can not deny that I really like it. No matter how strange may the bad (mostly stange or unanswered) things looks, I still enjoying and really liking this. What a ride! FWIW, I always thought that Steven didn't reach White Diamond just with a sick burn about how she is acting like a child. I think White flushed pink because Steven unknowingly use a Pink Diamond power that he and even Pink Diamond herself were unaware of. Blue projects her feelings into others, but what Steven did was project his EMPATHY into White. Just like White possessing others turned them white, Steven's power caused White and the others to flush pink. White had literally been living in her head and had cut herself off from all connections and emotions, so being forced to experience empathy for the first time in aeons was overwhelming.

I originally started watching this as season 2 was airing, but fell off during the long wait between episodes probably at the end of season 4. Picked it back up at the start of covid and rewatched it all and then finished it in March 2020. I was a weeping mess for most of this final episode, dang. This show really means a lot to me and so many others and I'm glad you enjoyed it so much, these reactions have been a great way to start my work week and I just wanted to say thank you

Congratulations on finishing the show! I’m proud of your for making it this far!! We still have the movie and the sequel series to go, but this was the end of the main story Rebecca Sugar wanted to tell. Also, what you said resonated with me and you are absolutely correct, Cartoons aren’t just for kids, in fact most of the cartoons that kids watched during my generation taught more complex moral lessons than adult TV shows. Loved seeing your reaction to the show, su is still one of my favorites. Some other cartoons i would highly recommend are over the garden wall, gravity falls, the owl house, and amphibia. All amazing shows that can sometimes pull your heart in.
