my vote for best hybrid shooter is still the Sony A7iv. The 4k 24fps is cleaner and 90% of the features you mentioned on the RV is on the a7IV except for the AI autofocus, 4k60 without crop, tilt and flip out screen etc I also think 33 megapixels on the A7IV is a sweet spot

1st point about it being faster is on REALLY important. I felt my A7iv just lagged too much while in use. Also you can keep photo/video settings independent on the A7s3 I found out after taking MANY photos in SLOG3. On the selector switch I wish they would use a "lock" switch instead of "push to turn" switch and I'd like photo in position 1, video in position 3, with S&Q in the middle.

Great review, Chris. The a7RV also has a similar cooling configuration to a a7SIII. In my experience it runs cooler and longer than the a1. How do you rig yours out for hybrid shooting outside where a vnd is needed? Do you keep it on all the time for video and photo? Cheers Braden

I own and love the Sony A7rV. From my experience I actually find shooting with it slower than when compared to my a7iv. The a7iv is snappier where as the R feels clunky, suppose it’s to be expected with the larger resolution. The rolling shutter in electronic mode is unusable too if you are shooting handheld. These are the only gripes though. Looking forward to the a93

Hi Chris. Second base ISO for SLOG3 in the A7R5 is 2500. The cleanup from 2000 is subtle, not comparable at all to 10000 to 12800 with the A7S3

Great job on the video Chris! Thanks for making it. I just picked up my A7RV this month. The old adage of "It's not the gear. It's the photographer." is true in many ways, but it's important to remember that the gear still makes a difference. I get a lot of customers that come in looking for a "beginner camera", and I always start with this camera as a reference point because it's not the most expensive camera they make, and any step down from here price-wise and you can clearly illustrate where the value loss is. Sure, you could buy an A7IV, and it's a fantastic camera, but you would only save about $1200-$1500, and then you miss out on the resolution, way better screen, and the A.I. Auto-focus. A7CR? Dope compact, full-frame camera, but say goodbye to dual card slots, the screen, better viewfinder, proper burst mode, etc. for a savings of only $900. The A7RV is expensive. But in so many ways it's just plain worth it.

I've had the A7R V since it was released. The unique blend of features it has makes it the ultimate hybrid. My favorite is the 26 Megapixel full frame RAW. I've also shot quite a lot of videos on it and I've never noticed the rolling shutter. And the IBIS is definitely better than my A7SIII was so it's better IMO for run and gun.

The A7IV is the perfect hybrid. I had the FX3 and sold it during the pandemic bc I was with out much work and was offered more than I paid for it. A month after I got the A7IV and love it, I even like it better than the FX3 except for the over heating on some what hot days, Not Florida humid hot summer days but no humidity semi hot days where I live. And Yes I know all the "tricks" to have it over heat "Less". But it over heats quite often albeit I shoot 90% of the time in 4K 60p which is really using all the horse power, But it should NOT over heat as much as it does. I can never imagine living in a hot humid climate being able to shoot 60P 4K for more than 5-10 minutes max. No way. So much I am considering selling it and o getting the FX3 again, Trying to hold out for the Fx3II. Everything else is better with the A7IV, specially the Autofocus and final image.

I think the one thing that bugs me a bit is the delay in wake up time. I've used the a7iii, a7riii and a7iv - the a7rv has the stickiest AF of all, the best colors & skin tones. I shoot it in med raw to save space most of the time. I have number 3 memory on the dial for 61 mp. Lastly, I don't know if people think about this, but I feel that the a7rv is a camera that is "future-proofed" more than any camera in the line with at least 3 years till you might need to upgrade. *Yes - please give us the ZV-E1 AI features (I'm buying it anyway).

Hi Chris. Is that a couple of big sensor dust spots in the sky at 2:26-2:30 above the middle of the trees and slighter higher above the right edge of the trees? I loathed my Sony A7R3a for this reason alone: its bkack hole ability to suck dust onto the sensor made me super reluctant to change lenses as dust was almost inevitible - I hated being handcuffed like that. All else was pretty great, but I sold it mainly for this reason. I hung onto some nice Sony glass inc. my 24mm GM, hoping the more recent cameras are less prone to sensor dust...but this makes me wonder. I tend to do scenery pans in 4k so any blobs in the sky become super noticeable with all else moving except them. Thanks for the benefit of your A7rV experience on this point.

I can't talk about video, but, for photo, I tested in detail the RV vs IV , and here are my own conclusion after controlled tests (using GM Master lenses 135 1.8 and 70-200 GM II), RV tested on RAW Compressed and RAW-M, 1) IQ- YOU could not tell the difference, even at the 61MP, for ll intended purposes, no difference (unless you are always cropping a lot). 2) Noise: 7IV noticeable better, 3) White Balance, loos like RV is better but, nothing that is drastically difference, 4) EVF , yes, RV is nicer than the IV, 5) Screen, I use mostly EVF and rarely the display to focus, this was not a factor for me, I can see some people may really like the flippy/Flop display if you use that a lot, 5) AF, I was expecting a lot more of the RV's AI, but, I could not see any major difference, the IV locks good enough eye AF for most of mu-y use cases , and I don't shoot birds, or trains or automobiles (just people). In summary, for my use case, the RV is an expensive overkill and decided to return it and get a second IV instead.. The A7IV is too god of a camera.

Low light is definitely more noisy but again I never need it past dusk anyway :-) hope that helps. actually there is a second base iso in video and its 2500... also have to agree it is the best hybrid camera for the price especially in Sony's line up. I have an A1 and it is superior but I can't justify someone buying that over this, especially if they are also into content creation, that screen a lone makes it worth it. If im just behind the camera and have to pick one of those 2 cameras to shoot both photo and video (particularly for things that require action) im picking my a1. If its fashion and more editorial work that requires both then the A7rv is the easy no brainer. If you have the budget for either or though I say get the A7rv and and any 24-70 and your goldend. (It would still be cheaper than the A1 too lol)

There is one thing I can't forgive - the butchering of simple 4K 24fps. They downscaled and oversampled it in the A7IV they should have done the same here... that's my dealbreaker since to me it seems like crippling... And speaking about cropping if you want better 4K you go into Super35 mode and get it both cropped x1.5 and with a ton of rolling shutter... I know i know the R series is for photography but a true hybrid should at least give you solid simple 4K @24fps.

@@chrisbrockhurst no, maybe in a year or two when it drops into my price range on second hand market, but cant afford it at the moment. But I have seen some tests of it with really pronounced and distracting rolling shutter artefacts during even moderately fast panning and technical specification support that. Its just a big elephant in a room when using it as a hybrid and you havent adressed it any way in the video. So its genuine question for you as videomaker how big of a problem is it for you. I personally really like the camera, its at the moment closest to the perfect camera body for my style (pure photography and no need for electronic only shutter so rolling shutter wouldnt be a problem for me), basically only downside is how Sony deals with firmware upgrade. And also the LCD screen movement system could be better, K1 have better system IMO. But concidering my second-hand knowledge about it I would probably not choose it if I was looking for a hybrid camera - because of slow sensor.
