Ukraine is one of the worst off countries after the collapse of the USSR. It is the poorest country in Europe despite having a huge aerospace industry, natural resources and some of the most fertile land for agriculture. During the communist era, Ukraine was the breadbasket of the Soviet Union. Despite all this, Ukrainians have experienced terrible famines such as the Stalinist Holodomor.
Today, the situation is not much better. Apart from enduring a war with Russia, its political system is particularly corrupt. Almost the entire economy is in the hands of big oligarchs: millionaires who amass fortunes thanks to their connections with political power.
Is it possible to change this system? Why is Ukraine in a real economic and political dilemma? Can Ukraine reverse its fortunes? In this video we tell you all about it.

After visiting Ukraine, I was surprised how many beautiful cities they have, countless beautiful restaurants, beautiful big malls, beautiful train stations that by the way are packed at any time of the day. Their cities are full of energy and youth. I saw almost no homeless on the streets, healthy people, so many good cars, boats, everybody using expensive Aaple products. They are Amazing, happy, friendly people. I would think that the numbers are deceiving due to the Informal economy which is not counted in the GDP. Best regards to the people of Beautiful Ukraine.

Yes, but the people in the villages are really really poor in money. However, how much money do you need when you live on mini-farm with chickens and a couple of cows and your main expense is $20 a month for electricity. Except for that $20 they live in a barter economy. Technically they are poor. In reality they are not as poor as the numbers say.

The thing is that the disabled and homeless are just so stigmatized around the post-Soviet area that they barely leave their shelter. In fact, if you are homeless and in a touristic streeet, you are likely to be beaten by a police. That's the way we solve homelesness problem in the former USSR. Considering healthy people, most unhealthy people cannot physically leave their home 'cause there is 0 handikapped -accesible areas in Ukraine. And about cars, that is just our mentality - we will eat the cheapest fiood but pay for a car --- we care more about for other peiple will think of us than about our reality

That privatization trick was literally same across the post-soviet countries. One huge factor in the process was that people were used to socialist environment and had absolutely no clue what was really going, what were those papers for. I'm from Georgia, another post-soviet country and it was the same shit here. I wish all the best to Ukraine and Ukrainians, hope we will see each other in EU soon

To expand on the good comment above: It is not surprising. The population had lived in communist economy, including all the biased communist economic views and argumentation. People simple did not have understanding of how shares, or property works in market economy (most of the property, or making profit being forbidden by the state). And you could not know it from western media, because foreign media was not allowed. So it is natural that in the first years- it was really hard for people to distinguish between good deals and bad ones. And between good politicians, populists, and thieves- because there was no political culture either. No free press, and no experience. So it was really hard for post-soviet states, but much easier for most Warsaw pact countries, which allowed private companies and farms even during the cold war. P.S. Love for Sakartvelas from Lithuania, hope you and Ukraine will join EU soon.

Interesting. Why, at the fall of the soviet union and at the independence of the republics, did the UN or other international agencies not supervise the transition? Wasn't Gorbechev (in the later years) and Yeltsin (in the early years) fairly hands off and/or in support of free media and international cooperation? "Today, almost every Czech citizen owns shares in Czech companies" Unfortunately, that is not true. Only about a quarter of Czech citizens currently own some kind of financial security (bonds or stocks). Also, voucher privatization really helped with the transition to market economy, but the original goal of distributing shares among people was never met. Most of Czechs had no idea what to do with vouchers, so they either sold them, or (worse case) bought a share in a company that immediately went bankrupt.

My recollection of the process is this: 1) either people believed claims that some fund is going to radically multiply their money, they gave their share to someone and those guys basically quickly monetized the whole thing and ran away 2) or they gave it to some conservative and more legit fund, which later offered them to buy-out their share for some fraction of the it's real value 3) or they selected a real company themselves and then it went belly up 4) or some fairly knowledgeble people get a share of something of real value (I remember that whoever invested in one coal powerplant basically 27x multiplied their share) Knowing the difference between 1 or 2 and 3 or 4 is basically down to luck in many cases. Ultimately it was a lottery or a kind of randomized scam, which managed to somehow sell out everything to private hands one way or the other. In many cases it is clear that if some of the assets were sold out to foreign buyers, it would allow the businesses to stay afloat and people to remain employed in them, but that was against liberal and nationalistic views of the government at that time. Most of the valuable assets ended up in foreign hands, but they went through a phase where large part of the business was destroyed through criminal behaviour.

If it weren't for German companies setting shop here (like Volkswagen buying Skoda) then the labour condition would cetrainly be set back. To put right about privatization in the Czech Republic. Although you said it right - the part you missed is that we had privatization groups (privatizacni fondy) that were buying the coupons from Czechs as well. Anyone could buy coupons (however only 1000 per person) for 1000 CZK at that time and those groups were offering 10 000 CZK in cash for them. And later exchange these coupons for public companies in auctions. 80-90% of the wealthiest Czechs were "made" this way. This process was legal and even tv ads promote these practices. Anyone interested, go and find some more information on this topic - very interesting yet kind of depressing from a Czech point of view.

I also agree that English material is limited (so do Czech) and the majority of information is in Czech (needless to say I believe the presented information in the video were misleading - but don't get me wrong I still like this channel). Fun fact, the responsible person for privatization was the ministry of finance - Vaclav Klaus, who had later become our president. They would never come up with something like DNR OR LNR(creating their own 'states'). 2. How could they start war with the rest of the country with no weapon. Russians now ridiculously respond on that that they found weapon in coalmines😜 3. Vladislav Surkov(unofficial supervisor of occupation of Ukraine and other post soviet states) confessed in Russian military presence on occupied territories, by means of which these territories were occupied. He said that in his latest interview look it up. 4. That footage from the city hall( I guess) that you showed, probably 70% of the people there were actual russians

And as I watched it, I had to admit to myself that it has a lot of mistakes and simplifications. Although I agree with a general premise of the video, little details just couldn't let me take any of it seriously. For one, Privatbank is not a property of Kolomoisky - it was nationalized in 2016 and belongs to the government. And Kolomoisky was never Zelenskiy's Chief of Staff. Do you know how I know this? Well, you don't have to dig deep to get this information, because there are literally dozens of articles on this topic. This information is even on Wikipedia, which means even a 4th grader could get it right. But not you, apparently. Which begs the question of just how little time do you really spend on creating your videos? Anyway, for all the casual viewers who read this comment - please double check any facts, because apparently VisualPolitik couldn't spend five more minutes to google things that they say in their video. P.S. And use a proper map of Ukraine! Some parts are not painted as part of my country and they are not even disputed or semi-autonomous or anything. Out of all maps on the internet you managed to find the one, that is inaccurate.

True, but Bolsheviks =/= Russians. According to latest studies there were about 10 times more Ukrainians fighting for Soviet side than for UPR's. Although many Ukrainians (just like Russians before) were forced to join Soviet forces. And it should be noted that in % terms there were way more Russians and semi-Ukrainians in early Soviet leadership than Ukrainians. Ironically thats one of the few thing that we should say thanks to Stalin, because he changed that during Great Purge.

There's a nuance not addressed in the video. In Ukraine GMO produce is effectively banned due to still active regulatory measure from mid-2000s. Therefore, country is a bit stuck with a lot of more...traditional farming.

They had pro-Communist government, it was called “country of Soviet coalition” but it wasn’t Soviet Union. USSR included only 16 Republics. Ukraine was one of them. Ukraine was much deeper integrated in Soviet Union and that’s why it was much harder to get rid of post-Soviet problems. In the other hand Czech Republic and Poland had more independence and saved their traditional institutions what helped them to come back to normal life after the Soviet fell.

Why Ukraine is poor? People in countries like Estonia, Poland, Czechia always had a clear vision what they want to be: just a 'normal European country'. And always (vast mnajority of them) saw the communism and forced alliance with USSR just as some unnatural period of their history. And as soon as the window of opportunity opened in 1989, they acted: immediately radically disengage from Russia, working on EU and NATO membership immediately, having western European states as clear model they want to become. Ukraine..... in 1990s, they did not know who they are and what they want, and missed that 'window of opportunity' when Russia was weak (1990s). Russian-style oligarchic system, russian-style corruption, but without oil/gas revenues. Lost 10 years made all the difference.
