Im an intj and i have an istj Friend, she doesn't like to talk about abstract theories and she doesn't use vague terms while speaking a lot , but i never found her boring, maybe because i am boring to lol But that's not the case really She's not boring because we have a similar dark sense of humour , we just get each other , and we really enjoy just talking and analyse things together

Another thing that is probably true about your ISTJ friend is they at least hear you out, even if they don't understand or disagree immediately. They don't get offended easily.

As an ISTJ I found this video very liberating and simultaneously calling me out. I love it. For me the subtlety and sarcasm is easy to pick up on unless its very subtle usually from an ISTJ. So true about the blank face when listening. My wife (Deanne) always says that people not only listen to my words but look at my face. It's a challenge. Lol

That is a very interesting phenomenon with ISTJs and their facial expressions, or lack thereof, when listening to people.

@@GhostofJung I've often explained it as I'm already receiving so much sensory because I live in the sensory. In order for me to pick up every detail that is said (because I enjoy the details) I need to try to shut off some of the visual sensory to get all of the audible sensory. I think my deadface gets like that because I'm not even looking at the person I just become hyper focused on what is being said. In the past I've looked away from people when I've talked to them for this very reason (trying to limit my sensory input).
@FlamingCockatiel

I'm looking for work right now, and I am reading guides about how to do interviews, and one thing that burns me is that I've read that 93 percent of the message your listener receives comes from everything other than the words you say. From what I've read, body language becomes more important when it and word choice don't align, so to say that in truthful conversation word content is only seven percent gives other things way more credit than they deserve. The interview books use hundreds of pages to go over proper responses but very little to body language or dress. Does that mean content matters more than people say it does? In a related thing, people who gave me a practice interview mentioned that I was pretty stiff in my body language and not very expressive. I think what you wrote about limiting sensory input was at work then so I had more brainpower for word usage.

My boss is an ISTJ. I’m an INFP. She’s my favourite person to work with firstly because her efficiency and directness terrify me and I quite like it. But also she riffs with me really well. I think maybe my Ne activates her Ne and and we end up down all kind of random rabbit roles. She has a wicked sense of humour too and I love how she just says what she thinks without regard for how it comes across. So refreshing.

THANK YOU for acknowledging that ISTJs can be excellent public speakers! When my ESTJ wife and I (INFP) were planning our wedding, she insisted that my ISTJ groomsman do a speech, because he is composed yet has a gloriously deadpan sense of humour. When we asked him, he said, "Great. I will need two hours on the day to prepare." We made sure he had the time, and he KILLED it! One of the highlights of our wedding day.

ISTJs can be very creative and they can be VERY FUNNY!!! I’ve seen my ISTJ daughter say to my ISTJ husband, when he’s been very deadpan in his delivery, “I don’t know whether you’re joking or not” which I found HILARIOUS btw because they can be so deadpan in their delivery, they don’t care if people get it or not, AND they themselves also struggle to understand the nuances of that form of comedy!!! I sorta wonder if it’s a way to try to create a more even playing field🤣 like, “if I’m going to have to be Fe blind in this world and not get to understand what’s going on with others, then they’re not going to get to understand what’s going on with ME, too!” 😂 I could be way off but it’s funny seeing one ISTJ confuse the hell outta another! But they just go into their ultra analytical mode and say, “I don’t understand. Is that a joke or are you actually upset?”

As ISTJ, I feel constantly dissed on by the other types. Boring, unintelligent, inflexible, cannot think outside the box... These kind of stereotypes make me feel ashamed of myself. We have humour, we learn and devise solutions, we can make compromises to well working concepts, and we DEFINITELY have feelings. Its just that we think first before we act.

I’m an INFJ female with an ISTJ husband and an ISTJ daughter. I also have an INTJ son. I’m only speaking on my two thinker kids because of this particular topic, but I actually have 4 grown kids, in all (INFP female, INTJ male, ISFP male, ISTJ female). Female ISTJs, from what I’ve observed, are far less robotic seeming than the males. The females have the built in feminine social genes, meant for child rearing, I believe. That’s my theory on it. I’ve also noticed the same between female and male INTJs. I have several close female INTJ friends, who are also mothers. Some with very new babies and others with grown children, like me. I don’t believe either type is “robotic”. I don’t believe order, routine and structure is something anyone should ever feel ashamed of, as it’s typically an asset to any person, when it’s healthy (as is the case with any positive character trait). To me, my thinkers seem a bit more self-aware and proactive about trying to expand beyond the confines of their innate character. I don’t know if it’s because they’re thinkers rather than feelers or if it’s because they’re judgers rather than perceivers, or if it’s some combination of both. But they’re definitely more motivated to do more and be more than what they’ve been dealt, via their innate natures. I’m not saying they’re better or their ways are more correct. It’s just something I’ve noticed. I think whether or not it’s better if a person is super into planned, active and intentional, conscious self-improvement, is quite subjective. Some “go with the flow” of the current or wave while others choose to “sail or surf” on the water or wave. I’m personally a surfer, but I can understand and respect the fluid, unknowing, moving desire of the creature who chooses to flow inside the current. I just prefer to have a vehicle (figurative sailboat or surfboard, ie: order/balance) which gives me some level of control within my life in this world.

I love talking to INTJ and ISTJ. Their* dorkiness is interesting to me. I have went to a ballet with an ISTJ and that was “fun”. It’s not something spontaneous, but definitely very enjoyable! This is from an ENFP 5w6 perspective. I am not friends with many ISTJ, but the ones I have worked under, I’ve always appreciated their rational thoughts. They allowed space for people to be themself and aren’t controlling. I think they appreciate my humor. I have a lot of respect for them, even if they’re butthole-ish, at times - Haha. I can respect a person who knows what they’re talking about and able to simplify the articulation of their thoughts. Props to ISTJ. ✊ I keep talking as I’m watching this (lol) but I have RBF too. People think I’m sad or mad or stuck up. I’m just taking in what’s going on around me ... Unless I want men to leave me alone, but that’s another story. I wish I had more goal orientation ability the way the ISTJ does. I have too many emotions and am always having to deal with every seven days. Ugh! Lastly, Memes are just for fun - they’re not meant to be taking literally, but to make you laugh... like dark humor. 😳😁. Have a great day you guys! Remember, the grass is always greener on whichever side that waters their lawn! 🥰❤️🙏. God bless!

Yes, everything needs to be scheduled - including fun. :) Times, dates, specific directions are just a good idea. I get it. Thank God for ISTJ's love of discipline and structure! Someone needs to be keeping things going and creating some sort of logical order to things. The thing with buying a car resonates for sure. When my wife and I buy a car, I'm the lead researcher. I will happily spend a lot of free time looking up all of the possible cars online for us that fit our budget and how we typically use a car. Then, I narrow it down to three or four cars that I'd be happy living with. By 'happy' I mean that they meet strict criteria of what I expect in a car, have good crash ratings, and good reviews on reputable sites. Then, I get my wife to go with me to the dealership with the list of these cars that the dealership's website says they have in stock. We look them over, test drive them and pick the one that my wife likes the best from among those four. When we are looking them over, my wife is often chatting with the salesman while I'm examining each car in minute detail, looking for any potential problems or things that I just know we will wind up not liking about it later on. I'll even lie on my back and scoot under the car a little, looking at it with a Mini Maglite. We always buy used cars because they are significantly cheaper than a new one, so I also know that I need to inspect them carefully for problems that the salesman might be hoping I don't notice. Yes, it's really true that most thinking dominants are not very physically expressive. Something has to be incredibly moving, funny, provocative, etc. for me to feel deeply enough about it that it shows on my face. My wife says that she can't always tell how I am actually feeing which is why she asks me that so often. I don't realize that I'm being stone faced (my preferred term for it since the 'b word' is not nice to say) of course since it's just part of who I am. Sometimes, I find myself having to consciously tell myself how I should be reacting to something. I'll be thinking "I should offer that crying friend a hug" or "Everybody else is laughing at this guy's joke. I want to fit in with them so I should laugh too" Sounds weird I suppose, but I do it. It's like I feel as though I'm an actor who needs to remember my lines or director's notes when I'm in a social situation. What Deanna says about this is so very true for me. I'm gradually getting better at acting like a 'normal' human. I know what you mean about creativity. Often, my wife will come to me with a problem or a goal but she's feeling stuck with it. It's so rewarding when we talk about stuff for her work or projects at church and I have a flash of insight or creativity that she hadn't even thought of. She really appreciates it and it's like one of those 'I saved the day' moments that are so fun. Oh yes, ISTJs (all types really to some degree) are far more nuanced than the memes and jokes make them seem. I think a lot of the stereotypes are based on misperceptions or extreme cases that don't represent how the person is most of the time. Even the descriptions in the books and websites about type often seem to be describing the type when they are under a lot of stress and are reverting to something almost like instinct.

Lol, he was on target when he says our thinking is perpendicular 😂 he brings a lot of balance to me and I appreciate his consistency and straightforwardness to my hyperthreading way. We definitely have our challenges (yeah, he does not understanding my jokes sometimes) but it's getting better over time! It makes sense that he likes that I can pick up on his emotions (he says I see right through him lol) and enjoys our playful dynamic as it reminds him of his childhood (his inferior Ne appreciates this I think). My cousin is an ISTJ and he was my closest cousin. We spent a lot of time in silence and competing with each other in sports etc. He was quite but hilarious and he can calm anyone done. He’s not robotic, but he can get things done on his schedule. He’s always paying attention to things and is one of the most hilarious people whom I know: he was also the jester in his hs madrigals and was prom king. He’s the best at impressions, but yeah has the business side too. I’m fun like I have the ESFP fun personality thing to interact with others but my inner INTJ rears it’s head when things don’t make sense, or there is no order I sort of freak out inside. I’m much more in my mind though since I’m CSBP. I’m married to an INFP and we are fun and boring at the same time in different ways but if you want to hang out, or have a deep and emotional conversation then I suggest you go with Brad, if you want to have a random adventure, or have a good conversation and then I disappear to recharge and get back into my routine and I forget to do it again for 7-8 months then find me if you can haha.

Hi, I am an ISTJ Female and I actually had doubts about my typology, although I have taken it 5 times and 4 times I'm typed as an ISTJ while once it was ISTP. I had this doubt because when I was in highschool, I'd usually rush my requirements and always think passively. I don't really make a schedule and just do whatever needs to be done and what I feel like it. However, as an adult, I appreciate how setting a schedule could help bring order and structure to my work and because of that I rarely get overwhelmed. Although there are times that I still fall behind schedule and my plans, like sometimes I abondon it all coz I don't feel like it anymore, I'm tired or meh whatever, I always find myself following through and getting on track as I recuperate. Also, I can be quite spontaneous too, although as I said, I always find myself naturally getting on track after some period of spontaneity or detour. The thing is, I let myself get distracted although it rarely happens but I'm glad that I just find my way back naturally. Also, the description fit me quite well, it's actually pretty scary by how accurate it was but it's just about scheduling. I guess I still need to develop my discipline.

As a INTJ I like Logical structure, and I'm willing to follow something that makes sense to me. Especially if I literally don't have to think about it. Because I can just turn off my imaginative thinking process, with the understanding that it has to be done a certain way, but it has to make sense to me. I think I can do this, because my dad liked me to do things the same way he did. So I learned to follow the way he wanted it to be done. I learned it was easier for me to just let someone else do the thinking. :) Though I did still find new ways to improve the way he did things, and he would either approve of the change, or not. Having the freedom to do it as we wish, as long as we know how to do all the steps, is what a INTJ likes. Just give us a list, a goal, and time frame, and we are happy. I'm usually pretty exact when I say I'm going to do something, or arrive somewhere. If I tell you I'll be there in 15 mins, that's when I'll get there, and if something comes up, I'll call and tell you my new time, or tell you I'm not coming. I'll never leave you wondering, because I wouldn't want to be in your place, left wondering where I'm at... As INTJ, I tend to keep track of how long it takes me to do something, and I'm really good at estimated how long it might take me to do it. My sister would be late to her own funeral though. I need to know the plan, I'm not a fan of chaos, I like some kind of order. I need to have at least the illusion of control. I like comfortable clothes as well. Comfortable, and Functional is all I need, I don't really need anything else. I live in my head, why would I care that much about what I'm wearing, as long as my clothes don't distract me, I don't care. Hmm, I can take things pretty literally. Especially if it's someone I don't know, and have no reason not to believe them. I truly believe that just about anything is possible, so where you see only 1 answer, I might see, or at least feel like their is more than one. People say they can literally see me thinking. Yet, to me, I don't feel like I'm doing anything at all, yet I was thinking. I think of myself as robot like as well. I'm also good at working with someone else's idea. Making it better, but I also come up with the ideas. Strange how similar I am to a ISTJ. Wow, yeah, that's how I react to others emotions as well. INTJ's are good at taking in lots of information, and being able to connect the dots. So thinking on our feet is something we are usually pretty good at. I'm pretty new to Personality types, and didn't realize that a ISTJ has similar traits to a INTJ. I think I'm a odd INTJ though, because I've had a odd life, and my father was very smart, and liked things done a certain way. He might have been a ISTJ. He had a great memory, as if it happened yesterday, while I can't remember most things in my life. Since my father was ISTJ, I think I learned how he thought, and so that way of thinking is also part of me, but the INTJ is very much me. IMO though, the ISTJ isn't much different in many ways compared to a INTJ. Maybe INTJ's are a bit more flexible in our thinking. I can literally mimic other people around me for a short period of time. I've even been known to pick up other peoples accents and start talking like them without realizing it. I can understand emotion in shows, but in real life, I don't feel the same way, and may not know what emotion to show, and I don't really know how to be angry. I always see myself from the outside in, and it makes me feel like I'm faking it. I've always been wide awake since I was 4. I learned to play Chess at 4. I've always felt like I was an adult, and not like my friends my age. Adults never treated me like a child. I'm always analyzing myself, either that, or I just turn it all off if I can, and just not care at all. Makes me feel like a robot, like I'm from a different world. Never really feeling normal.

Loved this! I find ISTJs to be fascinating. I know four off the top of my head. Three are male and one is female. I am an INFP and I get along better with the guys. One is my uncle and his Si is so strong that he feels like a steadfast pillar. The other ISTJ male is very Te though obviously Si dominant. The other ISTJ is a cross between the first two. I do find them attractive. The female is just cold emotionally and distant. That being said, we have talked and when she gets to sharing, she becomes interesting and intriguing and even fun to hear from. It is just hard for her to seemingly care to get to know me. It used to upset me because I wanted to be friends. I think I am an adaptable INFP and can go Te mode with less emotion when with ISTJs. I just feel like the ISTJ guys being guys respect me more. And interestingly, my uncle radiates safety like a teddy bear.

Older ISTJs can definitely be like that. You go to them for safety and stability. What you said about your female ISTJ friend is true once you get to know them. Outside looking in is very tough to find them as warm companions initially.

I'm an INTJ. What actually sparked my interest in this particular dynamic is a current problem I'm having with my current supervisor who is an ISTJ. She's the type of person who will send you like 8 emails, each with a huge list of specific instructions, and if you don't follow LITERALLY every single instruction to a T, she will get royally pissed off with you. Even if the reason you deviated from the instruction had a very good logical reason based on the context that she hadn't predicted. It's very frustrating to an INTJ who essentially just wants clear over-arching objectives but doesn't ever want to be micro managed. But perhaps the dynamic works better if you're in a relationship. It seems like it would be tough though because I generally really hate all the fine little details and worrying about that. I only will pay very close attention if the details have a significant impact on the bigger picture or goal. (I.E I'm baking a cake and a very specific brand has a huge impact on the flavor of the cake and so I will absolutely make sure I buy that brand). Whether or not I use a mixer or a spoon, whether I use a specific bowl that's easier to clean, whether I do it at 12am because that's when it will be the best time to make the most noise are all things that bore me to death.

Reeeealllllyyy relate to being weirdly good at public speaking and presenting despite being very introverted, as an ISTJ, I really don't have a fear of it if I've been given time to research. Never realized that I really Don't worry about order because it'll come out linearly. Also had the experience of being thought of as judgemental and cold when someone just sees me in class. When you talked about someone just saying that "we'll find each other" somewhere it actually made me anxious, I HATE that. About the taking people at face value, I finally just started doing what Deanna does and admitting I'm not sure because it really is kind of mentally taxing to try to figure it out and then deal with the aftermath of being corrected instead of just admitting I don't get it.....I do the same deadpan to other people though, so me and my ENFP best friend deadpan one another sometimes Knowing the other is going to take it at face value as part of our banter lol

From my personal experience, the ISTJ I know I could see how could come across as cold & efficient in a work environment. From a relationship perspective, I’ve noticed doesn’t really joke around or show much of a sense of humor or branch outside to do new hobbies or try new experiences which is why they can be labeled as “boring”. Enfp are able to see through ISTJ just like we do INTJ. I was way younger (teen) than the two I knew initially (40-50 y-o's), yet I was the main ome to keep conversation with them because everyome else treated them as odd, while I found them funny and intellectually fascinating... but yes, they also were much different than our surrounding social group ... I also appreciated their straight forward style of communication. It allows all pretense to fall away.

I'm an INTJ and I noticed the point about ISTJs having layers. For example, my ISTJ friend will put on more of an extraverted feeler mask at work (I thought she was an ESFJ at first lol), but once she started getting more comfortable around me her more opinionated side came out. She also shows her rational side to me too, perhaps because I'm rational too as an INTJ. I want to engage her fun side but when she has work to do she's totally focused on it, which I can respect, because I'm that way too.

BUT I will say that if I'm given something vague, I will be OK with running with it and doing my own thing as I see fit...that probably has to do with the lead Te. If they complain after, then well, no further details were given so...sorry not sorry 😆. OR I will tell them upfront how I plan of doing x with vague details. I think the issue can arise when a person just closes themselves off (which sometimes is necessary depending on the context) or their way of functioning/thinking makes them cut off people that are different from them, hence you don't actually get to know them which may be a reason for people to just overlook or dismiss someone as incompatible or having "no personality".

So FYI most people who are calling you blind upholders are calling out your tendency to uphold things that are "bad" - even if they are efficient. They are speaking to the impact, or principles behind the thing you're upholding - it's substance, not just it's timetable. What are your actual opinions on the substance a thing? Can you formulate an opinion about idea's morality or it's concept or it's potential? Not just it's efficacy.

Very loyal to the cause yet co operates with everything that comes from above them, despite it possibly being irrational or unnecessary. As the other robot type, INTP, it's really funny to hear her identify with being a machine over a robot. I have the same opinion... but in the opposite way. I'd WAY rather be a robot than a machine! A machine is unfeeling, unthinking, route repetition. A spinning wheel is a machine. A robot at least has some kind of agency and usually has an AI. The xSTJs always baffle me with the things they take pride in, but I guess that's how it feels with my 3rd slot disrespect of Si, lol. TBF I do agree with the inaccuracy of language. I dislike the 'afternoon' thing, but I can live with it even though I'm annoyed. I don't really know how someone could live in this world with the way most ppl communicate if that was a trigger. If so, I'd probably be triggered like 5x a day lol Also ISTJ said "we're not the most boring type" then didn't offer any alternative types, lol. The Myers-Briggs personality test is malarkey! It may give you an idea for your behavior for your current time. The reason I don't agree with the personality test because everyone changes with time and experience. We can't control what life throws at us a few years down the road. If we are really creatures of habit, why isn't that possible for an introvert to become an extrovert? What if the job requires you to talk to people and connect with them 🤔 some people might be tired of being tired so they make life changes whether it's with health, finances, or living situation. All those can change for anyone by choice or by uncontrollable events. Did anyone ever think we would have a pandemic? Think of how that changed everyone's paradigm. It clearly shifted everyone's mindset on how they operate and do things. I don't believe in shortcuts to thinking and for those who buy into the personality test may want to consider other tests to rule out possible autism.

He challenges any inaccuracies in what you say but is oblivious to him own gross assumptions and hence ignorance. Total hypocrite who loves to correct others with the sensitivity of a bulldozer. He has elements of narcissism. It’s all about himself, barely an interest in me. He’s a smart ass who isn’t as clever as he thinks and behaves stupidly and immaturely a lot of the time. He’s a fairly high manager in a firm, who takes his job way too seriously given I think it’s essentially boring (it’s building maintenance). Luckily he lives abroad, so don’t see him much. He relaxes with Lego and jigsaws and he’s 53 yo lol. I know other ISTJs who do jigsaws, it seems it’s a thing for them. Makes no sense to a creative INFJ like me. Note INFJ and ISTJ share no cognitive functions, and even similar ones are in reverse order. So we are as apposite as they come. Oh yes and if he’s proven wrong in an argument he gets verbally aggressive with loud swear words. He’s like a spoilt kid at his worst. Likes to bury his head in the sand if he doesn’t like something. I know some really nice ISTJs but as an INTJ I can never talk with them about anything that really interests me, and there's a lack of creativity too. Furthermore, it's really difficult for me listening to them talking because they get into all the tiniest details that not only I don't care for, but also my brain just refuses to process, and then I find myself zoning out. I really do find them boring.

My wife can see when I start tuning out and then wraps up the conversation. Its super funny. Appreciate this comment!

There’s many ISTJ I know that does nothing of what you said, lmao. They can be detailed but they’re not less creative, at all. Creativity exists in all functions. So you actually have no reason to find an entire type boring, it’s just you limiting your already narrow perspective about cognitive functions and likely type casting everyone you know who fits that negative criteria as “ISTJ” or other types you don’t like. It’s just really ironic considering Si users in the MBTI community tend to be much more open minded and flexible about their understanding of MBTI theory than intuitives with their frequent selective/confirmation bias. This stigmatizing and over simplifying isn’t what this (pseudoscience) idea was coined for lmao.

Interesting 🤔 ISTJ also sounds like they could possibly be on the spectrum. Have you heard that before?

ISTJ's are boring. As an ENTP it blows my mind how conformist and dry they are. I like INTJ's more but they can be a bit boring too. I think ISTJ's are jealous of ENTP's adapability, humor, and confidence. I admit that I'm jealous of the ISTJ's ability to fit in without making any waves.

You can have a lot of fun and still fly under the radar. FYI: calling conformist as a first is a sure way to get people NOT to open up. Have some patience and you will see some quirky stuff.

@@FlamingCockatiel ISTJ's are stanch traditionalists. They have fun but they are hard to vibe with as an entp. We're just on different ends of the spectrum. Imagine eric andre and nurse ratchet hanging out lol
