As someone that never likes sitcoms, I was amazed to find this to be my favorite show for quite a long time. And to Ellionart, I wouldn't consider Louie a sitcom. His previous show, Life with Louie was a sitcom. You can tell the difference immediately. But then again, you can call any comedy that comes from situations a situation comedy. But Louie doesn't have a set location or anything that sitcoms normally have. But yeah, it was an emotional rollercoaster seeing the show go off the air, come back then go away again. The final season aired on Yahoo Screens and I tried spreading the news on Facebook because I didn't even know and I considered myself an informed fan of the show. To my sad surprise, all I got for responses was "What's community?" and my heart broke knowing that meant it was probably the final season. But at least there's even more Dan Harmon material out there now than back then. But the specialness of Community will never be recaptured... Speaking of which, I just realized I need to pick up all the seasons of the show. I can't believe I never thought of it until now. I've been collecting shows and movies that I can stand watching more than once for the past couple years. I used to have a giant DVD collection that got stolen, but after I realized I didn't miss most of them. Just my limited edition copy of Evil Dead 2 in a numbered tin. :( My ex wife stole it along with everyhing else I owned at the time. Long story, I probably wrote lots about it around youtube if you wanna know it. But I realized I really can't stand to watch many shows more than once. Or movies. Some I can, and there are some that get better the more I watch them. Those are the best, the type that seem to grow as you grow. Like Synecdoche, New York by Charlie Kaufman. Which I haven't seen in like 5 years and could use another viewing. But yeah, Community is a very fitting show to add. :)

Miles in a sense yes and no. For a show that was clinging for anything to stay on the air for production it’s crazy we got as much as we did. It’s one where In terms of history of comedic shows could easily be lost and forgotten if it was added to Netflix and the hype of it becoming popular once more having the group begin to expand since until recently I didn’t see much of it talked about anymore. It gets a lot of praise within a group of people but I’m assuming if you went and made a poll randomly about TV sitcoms plenty of people wouldn’t know it or it would be easily beat out by other shows. despite this, many people who are into sitcoms and analysis of shows adore Community and it’s the tightnit fanbase that explain it’s popularity, as well as random clips that seemed to blow up on the internet. I think also outside of popular or not popular the show isn’t often recognized for the amazing comedic aspects often being brushed off or the amazing plot even if absurd.

I love all the ways things are connected in the #Community shows that allow you to continuously discover new treasures. It's been many years and yet I saw something by accident a couple weeks ago. I was watching my favorite episode, *season 5, ep. 5, Geothermal Escapism* - or the "Goodbye Troy" episode. Loved it and the next episode started playing. Near the end, I had to pause it to get up. Came back and it showed Professor Hickey watching his TV. At the bottom of his TV, there was a crawl I hadn't seen in the previous 7 times I've watched all six seasons. It read, *"Actor LaVar Burton and non-celebrity companion captured by pirates."* If you're not a diehard fan, you may not understand what that means. But if you watched the previous episode and know Troy just left to sail the world with LaVar Burton, then that little crawl means everything! There's also a message on the white board of the library that has six sentences written on it. When you read the first word in each sentence, it says, *Six* *Seasons* *And* *A* *Movie.*

Kristofor Kristofor Yeah, I really liked Season 5 because even though they had to lose Troy and Pierce I loved the characters of Professors Duncan and Hickey. Season 6 didn't grab me as much because it felt like it had to scramble to find new characters to fill the new void left by Duncan and Hickey. As I was watching it I just felt like they had written themselves out of so many holes by the time season 6 came that I was tired of everything having to restart again.
@Kriistofor7 жыл бұрын
Similar experience here. Similar experience here. While the fifth season had that "back on track" feeling for me, it seemed that sixth season was trying to find its new iDeantity with the new character developments while also being the final season that is supposed to give its viewers a somewhat satisfying ending. Eventually, I started watching Community from season 1 before finishing the last few episodes of season 6 because of the above-mentioned opinion.

I agree with all of your points (because I'm a die-hard fan), but as a die-hard fan I also disagree with your choice of clips to demonstrate the show. Let's be real, this video is, fan circle-jerk aside, a recommendation for people on the fence to try the show out. Those scenes fail to do this. They pander to people who already watched and loved the show, but do nothing for the outsiders. Now I fell into the same pit trying to get my gf into Community: I showed her all the different genre pieces, the spectacles and awesome punchlines. She didn't get it. Why? Because she had not watched the build-ups to these scenes. No buildup, no climax. To her, they're just weird people doing weird things. Community should be presented through its witty dialogues, especially in the cold-opens, which portray the dynamics between the main characters crazy well. You want a clip to recommend Community to your friend? "Pierce will beat that in one minute."

I remember watching the pilot of this show and not being hooked at all. The only reason I watched it was because I promised my friend I would watch it with her. I watched about 5 episodes in a row and realized that it was growing on me for several reasons: 1. This show has some of the best continuity that I have ever seen. Characters actually remember and reference events from earlier episodes. 2. There is character development for all of the main cast and they all are 3-D characters. I can easily imagine meeting people like them in real life. 3. The "gimmick" episodes. A lot of shows do gimmicky episodes just to pull viewings and don't really do anything unique with it. To me Community does what Buffy did with gimmick episodes: it put it's own spin on them and used that particular genre to do something special with the ongoing narrative. I've gone on enough, but I really do think that this is a show that takes about 6 episodes in a row to determine if you want to pass on it or not.

I'm not a huge tv person and even less a movies fan so I probably miss 85% of Abed's references. But I'm a huge theatre person so I connect with Abed anyway because I know what it's like to relate to the real world using a fictional medium and often having people not understand the parallels you draw. As a fellow fan of Community, I thank you for drawing more attention to what is possibly one of the best sitcoms in recent history. Your evaluation is level-headed and appropriate; I too have tried to get others interested in Community and found that they often responded negatively for the same reasons stated in your video. The use of pop culture as common lexicon is often extremely off-putting for those that feel it's pandering (consider the recent releases of Adam Sandler's Pixels or Ernest Cline's Armada), lazy (as is commonly the case with Family Guy) or non-inclusive (if you didn't grow up steeped in the same culture and consume the same media as the writers, you can lose out on a great deal of the meta-humor and genre subversion). I am moderately surprised I haven't come across an annotated script or play-by-play voice over that explains the references on an episodic basis. Maybe That's what Harmon is saving the movie for....

I also want to add that if you are watching Community, don't give up during season 4. just get through it. 5 and 6 are still definitely worth watching!

i’m aware of how popular and well known it is, but could you do an episode on why glee is loved (and hated) so much, yet resonates with so many people?

ha! I just made a brand new comment above without even seeing this first. That it's no coincidence that Community and Arrested Development both had two filmmakers at the core of their creation -- the Russo Brothers, Anthony & Joe. Yep, the actual creators are Dan Harmon (Community) and Mitch Hurwitz (AD) respectively, but the Russos are pretty much just as responsible for the tone and overall feel of each show as the originators are. Directed the pilots for each, and many more episodes after that, as well as Executive Producers. And of course Hurwitz once cameo'd in Community and Harmon did the same in AD.

For me, this is the best comedy of all-time, but I could hear arguments for Seinfeld surpassing it. No other comedies need apply as none are up to the standard of those two shows.

They kept moving it around on the schedule and delaying the start of the season. So much so that you had to work hard to find it. And if you were busy as many of us are, you'd forget to even look for it.
