It's just not something they're accustomed to, so they think it's bad. Music that is unfamiliar is hard to make sense of, and this album uses a lot more unconventional scales and rhythms. I think they'd find that if they listened to the album multiple times, it will start to sound better to them. I mean, I did not like atonal music at all, and then I went to college for music and had to listen to it so many times that it started to sound good. I don't think there's anything wrong with not being a fan of this album, but framing that dislike as an objective fact just makes you sound ignorant.
@Innosos
@Innosos 4 жыл бұрын
@@WinglesDragon "I think they'd find that if they listened to the album multiple times, it will start to sound better to them." That's one bad argument to make even if it's ultimately the truth (very much was the case with Endless Forms Most Beautiful for me personally). I wouldn't want people to tell "You just don't like it because you didn't like it the first, second or third time you heard it!". That just sounds arrogant and/or elitist. Especially if people bring up their musical education.
@WinglesDragon
@WinglesDragon 4 жыл бұрын
@@Innosos I wasn't talking to someone who disliked the album, though, nor was I making an argument; I was giving an explanation as to why some people dislike it, and was simply using my music education as an example. It was something that was discussed in my music theory class, my world music class, and my music therapy class that I find interesting. Also, I was only criticizing those who called the album "bad", not those who simply disliked it. Personally, I don't think any music is objectively bad. It's just super annoying that everytime I try to share something I learned from college it is simply dismissed as me being "elitist." Nowhere was I stating that I was better than anybody; I just think the psychological and neurological reasons for why people enjoy certain music to be fascinating and like to share them.
@Innosos

@@WinglesDragon I guess my intent was garbled or didn't come across. I'm sorry. I've said in the very second sentence I subscribe to the same theory. I was argueing that if you were to argue that sentiment with a laymen they'd probably think of it in this way. This was in no way meant as an attack of your person or your education.

As a HUGE fan who came very late to the party, as I just stumbled on them in last month, I love how much each album, and live tour video, shows how they keep inventing new ways to mix genres to craft music eclectically theirs, and the paths they forge in cincept/lyrics. And for favourite: I want to give some love to All the Works of Nature that Adorn the World, even though it seems to be more of a Tuomas solo project than a Nightwish work (there's a little bit of Floor, Troy and Kai, but I don't hear anything from Marko or Emppu in it). That said, to me it's like Tuomas's Pastoral Symphony (yes, I know it's not strictly a symphony...) and I think Beethoven would have approved, had he been around to hear it.

I totally agree with you, this is the best song of the album. All the elements of creativity of them that I like are in this song. I loved the whole thing, but in my opinion just three songs quite reached what they wanted to achieve and what we expected they could achieve. Maybe the next record will be the ultimate classic of Floor's era... By the way, i really loved the album, the concept, the intrumental side, everything. About your review/reaction, I love the way you walk us through the song, your comments about the composition, the vibe of the song, the tecnical stuff, etc, are always on point. @@vedranb87 nope bro. The reason why I wrote my previous comment was the fact that many people don't even know who or what Pan is. I've seen certain comments where people were referring to a Pan as a frying pan, with explanations such as: everything is blended together, since the album is conceptually different, so the pan blends old and new sounds together. But the people who follow Nightwish for a long time will know that Tuomas is a big fan of including the mythological elements into the songs. And I was actually glad that you were one of those people who noticed the reference to the proper Pan, and not a frying pan. A što se tiče pive, za to sam uvijek 🍺

"I Tip My Hat..." is an English expression to express respect and admiration, so the same as the French one. I'm enjoying your reactions because as usual you are helping to point out what makes the sounds so unique or unusual, and making us non-singers understand how good Floor (and Tuomas and the others) really are. Keep up the great work. I'm really enjoying the new album too, "How's the Heart?" is stunning, and the lyrics are incredibly beautiful. There is also a stunning acoustic version of it with Floor & Troy performing it on the Planet Rock chanel. You should listen to it, it is like a whole new and incredibly beautiful song. Are you going to react to the second disk too? I know there is no singing on it (other than a few choral backings) but it would be great to get your take on the music.

I've listened to the album a few times now, and I think Nightwish did it again. I like how they took some chances, yet still ended up with a sound that is unmistakably theirs, and still packed with emotion. I hadn't even noticed it until a friend mentioned it to me today, but this song in particular really channels that old Wishmaster-era Nightwish. I wonder how much this song was inspired by reviving so many old songs on their Decades World Tour.

Great reaction again. I like the way you are doing it. I‘m definitely interested in videos about music theory. Personally I don’t play an instrument or learned much about music besides the little bit you learn in school, that I almost forgot all. Since I got in touch with classic music, I love classic music, I dived deeper into it and try to learn some things about music theory, to get a deeper understanding. It was fun to learn about sonata form and figuring out all parts of it in some Beethoven symphonies. Just for the record, my favourite composer, besides Tuomas Holopainen ;) , is Gustav Mahler, heard his 1st symphony in concert hall and my favourite symphony by far is his 2nd, the Resurrection symphony. So, yes, please more about music theory!!! How about reacting to classic music? For example Beethovens famous 5th symphony. You could make a video of each movement, for example. Of course it is up to you, you are the boss on your channel. Greetings from Germany. Stay healthy.

Empuu's guitar work drives this whole album to me...he is the unsung hero of Nightwish. When you've got as much talent in the band with the other members as Nightwish, that fact that he does very few solos and doesn't have any real "in your face" moments to shine (though we know he is quite capable of ripping it when he does get the chance) means that he sorta gets lost in the shuffle. He's got some great chugging rhythms going on throughout this CD, and they stand out in the mix better on this CD, to me anyway. Glad to see others appreciating Empuu as well!

madDdog 67 Emppu has always had only few solos, which I've also wandered why. His solos are usually very intelligent and not too showy. But I have to admire that Nightwish produces very solid guitar wall with one tiny guitarist when lesser bands needs two or three big hunks. 😉

The lyrics flow, don't "clash" with the melody too much. Arrangement-wise it gives out an early Nightwish vibe a la Wishmaster and Elvenpath. And don't even get me to start mentioning the theme! My favorite too, but the album itself seems very well made (as always), the way they show how art had a impact in the evolution of humanity, be it through painting, music, theater or other ways, is really fantastic, especially how they contrast this with how humanity has lost the connection with nature through the years later on. Amazing job, both from Nightwish and your review as well, I love to learn more about the technical side of these amazing music, thanks Elvann!

This album is amazing! This song remind me so much of "Chess" The musical made by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus ( Former ABBA ), and Tim Rice. I can almost hear Josefin Nilsson (R.I.P.) sing this.

@James Schwarz OMG, Yes. Precisely that. Thanx. I wonder if Tuomas hade the Chess musical in mind, when he composed this track, and mostly, the musicvideo with all the chess pieces.

Many of the lines appear to reference specific works of literature: Something wicked their way came Great escape An ape in awe before a door There and back.... And that's just some i picked up on in the first part of the song.

Also _"The Sea Lady"_ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sea_Lady and _"Snow, Glass, Apples"_ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow,_Glass,_Apples even the name _"Pan"_ might be a reference to _"The Great God Pan"_ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_God_Pan I just wonder from what literary work comes the _"An ape in awe before a door"_ ?

An ape in awe before a door has to be a reference to the movie Pans Labyrinth I think.

Really enjoy your channel. I’m not “trained” musically but feel that I have a good ear for it. I have always agreed with you in regard to Floor in that I am way more impressed with her lower register/range even more than her ridiculous highs. I love the mid-lows in this song especially the “Beautiful tragedy wonderful fantasy “ lines as well as the lower operatic tones in Shoemaker. I was totally impressed on first listen to how difficult the phrasing/precision on Music as well as this and Shoemaker really is. Yes not as showy as GLS but even a non-singer like me can appreciate how hard that is to hit perfectly like she does. I tip my cap to you as well as Floor and all of the band !!!

In English I would "tip my hat", which I guess is the same. Pan is my favourite and quite reminiscient of some of the older albums. Personally I would love you to do a more "technical" review of the album as one video once you've gone through all the songs.

This is one of my favourites on the album (along with How's the Heart). The opening is very Hans Zimmer - sounds just like the Pirates of the Caribbean theme. Like the opening track Music, I can definitely hear some Sondheim influences: Into the Woods or Sweeny Todd. It also reminds me a little of Storytime from Imaginaerum.

OK, a little , alright way off topic here. I have watched a few reaction videos of yours and had no idea, you can sing! You can sing....really.....well! Then I find out, you play Harp, while you're singing. You do both very well. I know it's not uncommon to be able to play and instrument and sing at the same time, but a harp? Just wow. The harp is a bit of a mystery to me, that's why the mind blowing reaction, sorry. But I do love listening to the harp, no can't play a lick on it. I just love a good harp song, sooo relaxing. String instruments are my favorite, but I like drumming too. But the harp, I guess I don't run across a lot of people, well that play harp. It caught me off guard. Ok back to regular programming. Excellent job by the way.

Hi Elvann. I am always looking forward to your reactions. Please don't mind the negative comments.There will always be negative people. But know: there will also be people that support you and I am one of them! I really do like your comment about music theory. I really just enjoy the whole album.

I lift my hat .... that is something we would say in the Netherlands if we see or hear something amazing that we could not do our-self. The sentence would be 'petje af' or 'daar neem ik mijn pet voor af ' ( hats off /or/ I take my hat off for that)

Even in catalan. We say "em trec el barret". It's a literal translation of "i take my hat off" and we would say it in the same manner as in Netherlands.
