Why it's so smart to own a Panasonic GH5 in 2024. (My final thoughts on this subject.)

Is it still worth grabbing a Panasonic Lumix GH5 in 2024? I think it is, for sure, 100 percent. I examine all the reasons why in this video. Micro four thirds is a worthy filmmaking format, of course, you just have to really understand how to use it properly. Once you do, the storytelling world is your oyster. So whether you are looking for a main camera, or a great backup, especially if you are in the Panasonic ecosystem, the GH5 is a great option, especially since you can get one for somewhere between $450-$800 easily, and often times with a few lenses included, and so, I highly recommend it, and I am really happy to say that I have a great backup for my main camera, my Panasonic S5, and that's a good thing. Filmmaking heaven as far as I'm concerned.

Bought my GH5 slightly used in 2018 for $800 and have never regretted it. Yes, doing the focal length math is awkward, but you get use to it. I've always preferred "Natural" as the baseline Picture Profile instead of "Standard", and tweak the Hue setting 2 clicks toward Red for more accurate skin tones. Has paid for itself many times over and is now B Cam with my S1H.

When I got my GH5 I used the natural profile because that is what I kept hearing. Love the natural profile. You do have to make adjustments. White in Revery and Caleb Hoover give you the adjustments. I film nature and flowers not weddings and I like the natural. I use cined for my GH6 though. I believe VLOG-L means light and I never heard great things about the vlog on GH5. Have you used your Helios on the GH yet?

To me, the log in this GH5 is definitely not as useful as log in my S5, which is incredible. Especially in the shadows and extreme highlights, it's tough to pull everything back in high contrast situations. Having said that, I made a video yesterday about crop factor equivalency, and the footage came out so good, and I used v log for that entire video, but it was all well lit... until I shot my talking head part in the shade, and had the issue I mentioned above. Trying to balance it out in post was impossible compared to the S5, which would have been a breeze in the same scenario. But the GH5 overall is SO DOPE. I love it. When I do use it, I'll be shooting most likely in the Standard profile. I like the way it looks. And yes, I adapted the Helios along with all my vintage lenses, all beautiful images. The way I work, the Helios is a little long in the GH5 for me, I'm used to shooting at 28mm and 50mm full frame on my S5, and so when I use my Helios it's essentially my 50 (even though it's 58), so on the GH5, I wouldn't use it as much, at least for how I generally work. But it looks like a movie, for sure. But if you point that lens at anything, it's a movie. ;) thanks for coming thru again, and for all the good energy. Much appreciated.

@@RockWILK In case you are messing around and want to try the Natural profile I found the settings. I realized every person I watched in the past who used to use the GH5 used the exact same settings for Natural. So here they are: Contrast -5 Sharpness 0 Noise Reduction -4 Saturation -2 Hue -1. I use the GH mostly when I am filming my large flower garden but am going to try using my S5 more this summer. I just have more lenses for my GH camera since I had it first and they are more reasonable. I started purchasing adapters for the vintage lenses so I cant wait to try them on the S5. Good energy back to you!! Always enjoy your videos.

@@dawnd9222 oh wow, thank you so much for this, I will definitely give it a shot. I initially bought this GH5 just to make sure I had a solid back up for my main camera, but the more I use it, the more fun I’m having with it, and so the more I’m gonna be including it in a lot of the work that I do along with my S5. It won’t replace the S5 for sure, I shoot anamorphic a lot, and my anamorphic lenses are L mount, so I couldn’t use them with the GH5 anyway, and I’m not about to buy more anamorphic lenses, but I like the GH5 much more than I thought I would. :-) I started on an APSC camera, but I never worked with micro 4/3, so I didn’t really know what to expect. At the end of the day, once you understand how the lenses look on whatever camera you’re using, as long as you know what you’re doing, you should be able to get pretty much the same image no matter what. Thanks so much for dropping this knowledge on me, I’m definitely going to implement these settings, and thanks for all the kind words. I don’t take that for granted at all.

I totally agree that the GH5 is still a great camera in 2024! It will always be a great camera! But, like every other camera, it has its ups and downs! I have the Sigma trio, 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm F1.4 for the M43 and they are all you really need but I have had GAS ever since I got sucked into the black hole of the "Cinematogrophy" so I have spent a shit-ton of money on all kinds of lenses! I shoot in VLog mainly but when filming people with the GH5, I use Cinelike D just because of skin tones as you said! TOO RED! BUT.......White balancing your camera is EVERYTHING and if you have the right tool to do thisVLog-L is beautiful on skin tones as well! But Cinelike D is quick and easy and you can set your ISO lower and you can cut it together with VLog in the edit fairly well! Cinelike V is more contrasty than Cinelike D so I use D! I want to mention Rock, I am always impressed with your videos! You always have great audio as well and to me, that's 70 percent of what you do in this business! Audio makes a video and you have that covered As usual, I have enjoyed watching! Rock on and thanks for sharing!
@RockWILK
@RockWILK 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate that. The only time I see issues with skin tones being too red is when it’s a really extremely high contrast situation. Especially when the skin tones are in the shadows, I just find that the log in the GH5 Situation s is not as powerful as in my S5. But overall, I love the way everything looks coming out of the GH5 other than that kind of extreme situation. And I totally agree with you, if you don’t have your audio together, nobody will even notice the video. :-) Fortunately, for me, I come from a pro audio background, so that’s a great advantage for all of my work. Thanks again for coming through and all the good energy, means a lot.

@RockWILK
@RockWILK 2 ай бұрын
28mm on APSC would be 42mm full frame equivalent (1.5 times on Sony and I believe 1.6 on Canon) and 28 on micro 4/3rds would be equivalent to 56mm on full frame, or 2 times crop.

The debate with this is he marketing for MFT lenses. rule iff thumb is you have to double everything not just the focal length. Example if you buy a MFT 25mm 1.8 lens its promoted as a nifty fifty but in fact its truly a 50mm 3.6 lens because you have to double the f stop which explains why you were get that background seperation due to the limiting circumstances with the sensor. So if you through a 35mm 1.4 Full Frame lens on a mft camera like a gh5 it will actually perform like a 70mm 2.8 lens ... so that makes why with your example, a 28-70 2.8 FF lens on Gh5 will act like a 46-140mm 5.6. Always hated how confusing and misguided the industry promoted this concept but don't get me wrong MFT is still a beast once y9ou understand these limitations but for MFT glass to be on PAR you would need f stops to be below 1 hints why you see some less like the SLR Magic 25mm T0.95 Hyperprime which in FF terms would be a a true nifty fifty 50mm 1.9 .. great vid though my guy hopefully that rambling made some kind of sense .. at least this is how I understand it

LOL I really appreciate you taking the time to leave all of this, it makes a lot of sense, and I've actually learned a lot from all the comments I've gotten over the last few days on these posts. Not convinced about the f thing. The f value refers to the amount of light. This is independent from the focal length. Do you have any picture illustrating what you claim?
