Honestly, i kinda understand why mappa gave up on YOI. The anime was already hard to make. Several studios rejected the project when it was first suggested. And when they eventually animated it they had to film figure sakters ice skating to properly animate it.

Yes, exactly! And even if they took the time to film figure skaters doing the routines, they still didn't use any rotoscoping at all for the animation. MAPPA went above and beyond what they needed to do for the anime when it was running---but the way they've handled the movie announcement is pretty questionable orz

I wish they would release cuts of what they made for it, so we can at least enjoy that, and officially call it quits. The animation and music in the trailer alone was gorgeous. Such a shame some really cool shots are probably lost forever.

If I remember right, I think Ensemble Fove posted about actually recording music for Ice Adolescence years back(??)-so I'm fairly sure there's some Yuri on Ice content floating around at MAPPA HQ. It really would be a waste if none of it ever saw the light of day!

If Cardcaptor Sakura could get an anime sequel 18 years after it aired, then there's always hope---for the fandom's collective mental health, it's just important to separate hope from expectation huhu

As an anime nerd that 100% called the revival of Bleach's anime, let me toss in my 2 cents... I'm 90% sure it's still coming just not any time soon, maybe 2026-2027 ish. The IRL issue in Russia is probably one of the biggest rocks in the road for this. MAPPA has already put work into it, it's true the studio didn't profit massively off it but the studio was still young when it picked YOI up and has only gotten more efficient and optimized in its animation process so imo that's a non factor at this point. It's coming, the fact they haven't removed the website and haven't made an announcement is proof enough, just internally it's been deemed it's not a good time to launch this project, so it's "frozen" and will be finished when it's appropriate.

I decided to revisit it after the slap in the face that was the MAPPA CEO interview and the warm hug that was Toshiyuki Toyonaga's song for Yuuri. This year was a rollercoaster for this fandom 💀

I've honestly given up on this movie, I was going to say the reason why Mappa removed the movie from its release date schedule was because it doesn't have a release date and its delayed by with The money loss and the Russia situation. It all adds up now, but I do have some hope it might release but it will be a while. Another reason that the movie took a while is because the Japanese fandom reacted badly about the movie plot announcement. Cause the movie would be about Victor's past before he met Yuri and people weren't happy with the idea that Yuri wouldn't be a main character in the story. This outrage caused a delay in the script and made the authors carry a lot of stress while sorting things out. However, I cannot find a source for that so you'll have to take it with a grain of salt Good video though! 👍

I’m a bit curious to know if the movie is fully done since I know the soundtrack was completed for it but I’m unsure if the movie is fully finished with the animation and voice acting ETC.

It would be crazy, if Mappa after 18 year of silence break the no-talk-of, and have asked artist Kobu to change to scrip a bit, so the fans see a movie related to the situation of the world. I can just imaging it: First a Covid-part in the movie, then another part, where both Yuri and Victor have to flee from Russia to avoid the war of Putin's hand. I still hope, that Mappa one day will finish, what they promised.

a person who gave birth when yuri on ice came out will now have a child that is 7 years old and in 1st grade. that's how long it's been 💀 I've lost all hope at this point and just moved on to other fandoms :(

I hope a different studio picks it up. MAPPA is/was busy with shonensh*t like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man and others. It's almost like they made a huge mistake announcing this. Also, YOI was already not easy to complete, like some have said, from music to figure skating. They made little money because they have to pay royalties for third-party music I assume. Edit: Actually, after thinking about the reasons in the video, I think it's safe not to hope for it (at least for now). lol

I think it's safe to hope but not actually expect anything-I'd probably only truly give up if they breach the 20 year mark 💀 While we do have to give credit to MAPPA for really going all out with the series to begin with, they really fucked up 🥲 It's very difficult to say if another studio *can* pick Yuri On Ice up at this point (there may be legalities we're not aware of), but it'd be hilarious (and delicious) karma if Kyoto Animation managed to pull it off

I feel like the characters being Russian is the main reason.... Popularity is the key factor for income and this may be a hindrance to their income so... yeah, I understand... Moreover, I'm not sure whether I would've watched the movie because I was into the series for the MC's chemistry.... I thought the same for JJK but was proven wrong by a landslide so this opinion might be wrong but there's no way to prove it

I think the movie being about just Victor when Yuri was the driving force of the series was a weird decision, so I agree with you there-but Russia's activities definitely had to be the nail in the coffin for MAPPA

wouldn´t it be nicer to know how the story goes on in a second season - if i´m right the movie "ice adolescence" is more about viktor than yuri - it´s a prequal for the YOI series
