The difference between Monty’s animations and Rooster Teeth’s animations is that Monty didn’t make fights, he made dances, just like what Ozpin said in RWBY Vol2 fighting and dancing are not so different. Rooster teeth are trying to make their fights be more cinematic, but Monty fights are more of an art, a more traditional style of old martial arts
@projectalpha22_va4 жыл бұрын
Just an art student passing by, who's been following Monty's work since Haloid. Your comment made me stop, because you've really hit the nail on the head. I didn't understand why the fights felt less soulless afterwards in both shows once Monty departed. I mean, I knew parts of it (the anticipation before hits was gone, the movements were too inhumanly fluid, the gravity wasn't there, etc) but those were all technical. Maybe I've had this epiphany before, maybe not, but I just wanted to stop and say that this is the answer, I honestly think so. Thank you.

What's really funny about Monty is that he not only had no formal training in animation, but he just started doing it at like the age of 15. Also when he was asked what the principles of animation were he genuinely didn't know. He basically got good because he was a breakdancer and had a great sense of rhythm. Also, RT addressed that since Monty's passing they wanted to move away from his style, either because they didn't believe they could emulate it correctly or because of a vision change. They wanted to go more hollywood in approach, which wasn't the best choice.

Forewarning about RWBY, the same thing happened with the fight scenes as well. All the fights from Pre-Trailers till like, season 4 were directed by Oum and are honestly so incredible. Now, there’s very little, stylized action when it comes to choreographing fights. It’s a little jarring to think about an anime that has natural progression of character’s talents going from quick, snappy, and sick to slow, reserved, and unimaginative. Thankfully, the team was smart and focused a lot of the show’s direction into story but it still feels a bit hollow w/o the fights that made rwby so well known.

I'm not gonna disagree that the fights from volume 3 (that Monty didn't direct) through volume 5 often suffer from the same issues as recent rvb but volumes 6 and 7 (so far) have shown a real improvement in fight scenes, from the Grimm fights in the premieres to the Blake and Yang vs Adam fight at the end of volume 6.

Not just the animation(which is by far the worst for me and just cringe worthy for me at times) but he characters, like Tucker feels like such a step backwards since season 13, Grif and Simmons aswell. You’re definitely right that the fight scenes have declined since Monty passed, but I still love this show because of the characters. I’ve never felt like any of the reds and blues have stopped being themselves for a second, and I love all of them so much I can’t even describe it. So even if the writing and animation start to decline, I hope they keep making it until they feel it’s time to say good bye.

Also, I can help you out with RWBY. The earlier seasons, especially season 1, have those principles that Monty was a huge fan of. Even though it's gotten way better then it's first season post-Monty, and especially better than RVB, it used to have really static "fights", and that's me being pretty generous. Seasons 4 and 5 of the show are the biggest sinners of this. Season 6 was a big step in the right direction, and so far, season 7 is ok. And I honestly do recommend the show. I just wanna give you a fair warning

Right? Even though they all are just the same old idiots, the character development is just amazing. Not all of them had the same level of character development as a character like Church or Tucker, but they all learned and changed in very deliberate and satisfying ways going from the first few seasons to season 10. They felt almost like close friends I've known for years by the end.

I'm like a year late, but one of the most memorable scenes in any animation I've ever seen was the Freeway Fight from Season 9. Particularly, when we reach the climax. It wasn't just the animation, but the MUSIC-amidst chasing one of the Insurgents, goaded on by Tex's sudden appearance, Carolina pushes herself further and further, faster and faster, and the camerawork and music follow her, building up to a ridiculous tempo that feels impossible to sustain. She moves so fast that pavement shatters under her feet. Glass shreds beneath her hands as she passes by. Her theme is being played at easily twice it's normal speed, and as the viewer you just KNEW that something had to give. And then it does, she wipes out hard, and the camera and music follow that brutal impact. It gave me goosebumps so potent that I can replicate the feeling just by listening to the score of that scene all these years later. I'm not gonna lie, there were still some moments in seasons 11-13 that gave me that feeling (Carolina VS Sharkface in their first matchup had the same "Carolina is pushing too far" feel) but after 13 it all sort of vanished. I'd love to see your assesment of RVB Zero, garbage fire that it is, because the ONE THING it has going for it is fairly decent action scenes (and literally nothing else).

Yep, They are slowly getting better, seasons 6 and 7 of rwby has had pretty good animation. WAY better than season 4 did (the one created after Monty's passing) Still suffers from a few issues though. the weapons just turning into a blur rather than seeing the thing in motion. a lot of the ranged attacks lack a punch, sometimes literally with Yang where she used to kinda shadow box when firing the ranged attacks but now just straight arm shooting the projectiles off. They are getting better but its basically season by season.

The point in RWBY that just made me go OOF I believe was in season 5 at the last-ish battle where Mercury lightly wacked Ruby's scythe with his foot, made a horrendously cheesy line, and she just picked it right back up and made some other defiant cheesy line in response. It made me wanna stop watching right there but I toughed it out and stopped watching after the end of that season.

Literally watching RWBY without Monty's presence there is a noticeable sense of lifelessness in the fights of RWBY. The heart and soul of the series. Season 17 was actually very much a course-correction for Red vs Blue and a return to form for it's writing. While it still had the time travel plot, Miles Luna (writer of Seasons 11-13 who returned to write this season after the writers of seasons 15 and 16 left) knew that he needed to focus on the characters and ground the story in their development which gave the plot a weight which Season 16 lacked.
@ThreadBomb5 жыл бұрын
This is not quite correct. Miles wrote two episodes, but most of it was written by Jason Weight. Miles is a producer of course, so had a hand in shaping the story too (as he did in previous seasons). But yeah, this means the writer of seasons 15-16 is gone. Sad but necessary. Thanks for making me look this stuff up. I am now looking forward to buying my DVD of season 17!

Season 16 isn't that good, but season 17 is most definitely a step up. I reckon it is in fact worth watching, because they do some solid character development for Donut, a couple genuinely good character moments for Caboose, a look at Carolina's development from beginning to end, and a few gags that genuinely made me laugh (such as Felix being afraid of knives - context required for that sentence, but yeah). And a minor thing on the environment in Carolina's self-harming segment, I do think it works better without the environment contributing anything. No tricks, no holds barred, no games, just her vs her past mindset. It's a fight she loses, but that doesn't matter because she knows she has genuine people who can and will support her. The animation criticisms are perfectly valid, but that fight means less if there are any outside factors contributing to the action.
