The answer which is glossed over in this advertisement, is that they use aluminum because it's lighter. Apparently using rivets to hold metal together is "outside the box thinking". I got a chuckle out of that one.

bdot02 "self" piercing rivets meaning no pre drilling holes. I've had to send metal products back to the manufacturer because the "self " piercing was incorrect/incomplete and absolutely unsatisfactory .

Stop using "military grade" or "aerospace grade" to make things sound better, aerospace aluminium isn't specially manufactured in a laboratory by scientists, its just a certain mixture, and tempering of aluminium. It'd be like me saying I have "blue grade" paint.

phlodel - I install 600 air conditioning compressors per shift and I do five shifts a week. So two bolts and one nut per compressor and I secure the HEGO sensor as well. So do the math.

The real problem of building cars out of aluminium is when we - the owners - crash them. A few body workers have the machines to restore this metal and they usually make you pay for it.

Absolutely not. Different soldering machines, different riveters, different temperatures at which the panels give and bend. Also the people involved have to be specifically trained to work with it. The repair cost is on average 30% or more expensive than an average steel (or alloy) car. Just search "repair cost of aluminum car" on Google and you will find tons of topics on blogs and forums explaining the ins and outs of "why it is more expensive to repair an aluminum (or Al-alloy) car.

"What took you so long"? Jaguar were one of the first manufacturers to market with an aluminium vehicle (X350 Jaguar XJ), and that had a much higher percentage of aluminium than the Audi A8 of the time.

Audi A8 did it back in 1994. In fact, German first showed aluminium back in 1899. In 1901, Benz created the first engine with Aluminum parts. JAGUAR X350 came out 2003, 9 years AFTER Audi A8. In addition, JAGUAR IS KNOWN TO BE UN RELIABLE. SAME WITH LandRovers. MAYBE THAT HAS CHANGED WITH TATA MOTORS, but a lot of old customers have been burn and NEVER coming back!

Absolute dam shame that the new E Pace was not made out of aluminum , to me a rushed decision to get it onto he market as small SUV's are all the rage and they didn't want to miss sales but over the long term a bad decisions and that means it will be about 8 years before maybe they do an aluminum one and hopefully they get rid of that Suzuki swift front and two ton weight .
