Was practically dying of cancer when this first dropped, never got a chance to help your algorithm by making a comment saying thanks for making a vid on a franchise near and dear to my heart growing up. This was something that in its own little way helped make a particularly painful treatment tolerable. So, thanks for having enough love for something close to your heart that you were able to remind me of my own love for it during a tough time. Happily cancer free and rewatching this again with a clearer head and it's still just as great! Thanks again for another walk down memory lane!

As a kid I didnt have wireless internet until well into the PS3’s lifecycle. This franchise was the first one I got invested in and loved, and I spent so much time playing around in it. I wasnt online at all, so I had nobody to talk to about with regard to my love of the series. In 6th Grade Social Studies I met this kid who also picked “Samos” as the Greek island he wanted to present on because he had also played Jak. This guy loved the franchise even more than I did, going so far as to eventually build his own custom skateboard with Jak and Daxter on it with some precursor flair. I think he even had a Jak statue on his desk in college, something to keep him going while he tried to get a degree in game design. The last time I saw him was while playing Pokemon Go with some friends during that summer it released. We were doing runs in the historic district of town, which this guy lived in, and we actually ran into him while he was out skating on his Jak board. That fall semester he was hospitalized and later passed away after being struck by a car on campus while boarding. When the ports came out for PS4, I made damn sure to platinum TPL for him. I always love when videos like this get made. It reminds me of him, but it also reminds me that there is so much love both in how this franchise was constructed and in how its remembered.

Fun stuff. I worked as a sound designer on Jak3. I remember spending a lot of time balancing out the quality of sounds that I could create with the amount of memory space allotted to be able to use them. All of the PS2's disc streaming resources were 100% allocated to graphics so we had to maintain pretty much every single sound asset in resident memory (around a paltry 500K) and a single load point for tiny level-specific swap-outs at the beginning of levels. Very challenging... even Daxter on the first PSP was more flexible in that regard. Then came the XBox360 and I never had to worry about that stuff anymore. It definitely made me a more clever sound designer tho!

"This shit plays like a Sasuke AMV looks" might be the best thing I've ever heard. And your analysis on Dark Jak has begged me to add some nuggets, as well. Jak didn't just harness dark eco, he sort of inadvertently became the new sage of it, at least in some semblance. In a world clear of those who remember eco's spiritual application, Jak, someone from the distant past, brings it back in its purest form as violence. Oppressive eco for an oppressive world.

I just realized the line "Every bone in my body tells me that the answers rest on the shoulders of a young boy", answers the question "Who were the precursors?" It can be interpreted as Daxter, literally on Jak's shoulder. The precursors were Ottsels, just like Daxter was turned into in the intro cutscene... 🤯

The vision that naughty dog wanted to achieve of an open world platformer with high quality cutscenes and characters to drive the story was just....an ingenious idea....a revolutionary take on game. With every new Jack and Daxter game I personally feel they got closer and closer to their original vision. My personal favorite is Jack and Daxter 2 but I do think 3 was "the best" this was a time where every new development improved the quality of the series not milking the original story. Always they developed always they added more to bring that open world platformer to life. I grew to love and pity some of the characters. I cried when the journey was over. I replayed the trilogy as a whole at least 10 times over. This series....The progression of the series...it's beautiful. This was a different time and I am thankful to you for reminding me of my younger days.

wow! i thought i wouldn't want to sit here and watch 2 hours worth of someone's opinion but i not only did, i shared the video to my son (and probably his brothers when they get home from work) i also got Jak and Daxter as a Christmas present in 2002. my boys spent their time watching mommy play this game, enjoying Daxter's antics and the whole story line. (still have a hilarious story about learning about the lurker fish the hard way and my son's reaction to said lurker fish to share). which lead to getting Jak II and the huge surprise that it turned out to be! followed quickly by getting Jak III. to say this trilogy made a mark on our lives is an understatement. even to the point that in 2008 my son got a shih tzu dog and named him Jak and in 2011 a rat terrier and named him Daxter, who both lived up to their naughty dog status (Jak passed in Sept of 2020 :'( but Dater is still with us) my boys are grown but still love Jak and Daxter Thank you for making this video

I often felt like Jak and Daxter was criminally underrated. It's my favorite video game series, followed by Borderlands. Jak and Daxter is also the first game series I was able to beat and complete 100%, so that's partially why it's forever a piece of my gaming heart.

I still haven't gotten 100% on the original, it's the 2 hardest power cells to get. The one right outside the spider cave where you have to get the yellow eco and shoot the box at the entrance of the cave and then the last big crystal in the cave. Never got to see the opening of the big vault because of it and only saw that scene because of the second game. 😭

It's a literal crime that Naughty Dog went on to exclusively do Uncharted games, like you didn't lose the rights to Jak and Daxter. At an time you wanted to you could make Jak 4, a _real_ *Jak IV.* Then they started The Last of Us, just to prove they can handle running to serieses concurrently... specifically to piss me off. Well, probably not me, specifically, I'm a Nintendo simp... but the broad demographic of people who enjoy platform games.

@@Drums_of_Liberation Well, my statement still stands. At any point they pretty much only need the desire to start the project again. In the real world, it's a bit more complicated than that, they have to convince shareholders or something; but they've done it before, they can do it again.

Instead I had Ratchet and Clank 3 and Deadlocked, among many other wonderful PS2 IPs like War of the Monsters. After playing them, I really wish I could send a message to myself in the past to get these games so I could have that nostalgia for them. Legendary.

Daxter is my personal favorite video game companion/sidekick. If it weren't for his commentary/jokes in the 1st game I probably wouldn't have enjoyed playing it since Jak didn't talk. His spin off game actually shows that he is capable of being a hero in his own right and a comic relief character can have dramatic moments. In the 2nd game we actually got to see his and Jak's relationship develop and we actually see why they are such good friends/heroic duo. And the 3rd game brought their friendship to the test when Daxter stood by Jak when no one else would and he got his happy ending getting his glory, girl, and pants. Oh, and let's just all agree that the last 2 games aren't relevant to their story!

When I finally got a PlayStation 2, it was the very first PS2 game I got. And I played it over and over again. Of all the games I've ever played, this one was the purist magic for me. It’s 2021 and I’m so glad videos on this game are still coming out and with as much views as this too. I’m 25 now and I’m replaying the trilogy again for the 20th time and I haven’t had this much fun with a video game in so long, not to say I don’t game anymore because I do play all the modern games but something about these older games hits different. The Jak trilogy is comfortable and had soul, I miss games like this. I feel like most of the games on the ps2 were passion projects and maybe that’s why it is the highest selling console. I hope we have games that we can play that make us feel like a kid again (excited to get home and play for the gameplay and story alone I mean). We really had the best childhood. Thanks for the great video on one of my favorite games ever.

Maybe a loop you overlooked in your analysis: By making like you mentioned the "age gating" dexterity tests, Naughty dog also puts you through a little montage of your own improvement. None of them are particularly hard, but it'll take a lot of grinding or just better dexterity to beat those mini-games. You have to keep throwing yourself at the gameplay, either across small or long stretches of time, to continue to see the plot unfold. So in that way, we're living in each of those timelines where Jak fails, but we also get to see the one where he finally succeeds and we get to reap the reward of being the hero, of seeing more of this world, of answering its mysteries. I can't tell you how it felt, probably five years after having started playing those games, finally going through the final cutscene in Jak 3. It felt like I'd lived the life of a hero. I finally created the world where goodness wins. Is the point of the story sorta simple? Maybe, but goddamn if I don't feel like Mar at the end of 3. They did everything right.

I really appreciated how you talked about Baron Praxis, his character and how complex and nuanced he is despite how you see him from Jak's perspective. I can recall the emotional impact the scene at the construction site had on me as a kid. Spending the whole game being built up to hate Baron Praxis as a pure evil dictator, who we are meant to defeat and kill ourselves, only to watch him go out as a hero trying to defend the city against a greater Evil that was pretending to be our friend and ally the whole time.
