I'm actually a little surprised you guys didn't mention anything about Twisted Sister front man, Dee Snider, voicing Gol in the first game. I actually have a fun little bit of trivia regarding this too. I've been best friends with his second oldest son since we went to elementary school together in the mid to late 90's. He was actually the reason I knew about Jak and Daxter way earlier since he and his dad had gotten to go to Naughty Dog's studio to record the voice lines months in advance of the first reveal. He told me about the entire experience, but what really stuck out to me was how they asked Dee to specifically record Twisted Sister-related dialogue. One of these lines actually did make it into the game, which has Gol saying, "We're not gonna take it" before Jak grabs the Light Eco. But there were some others that were more for the sake of joking around. They were things along the lines of "We're not gonna take it/I wanna rock? What kind of idiot would write that?!" in Gol's voice. I'll have to ask him if he remembers anything else from that day, or possibly others unused lines. Still, I found it pretty funny.

For the yellow sages lab, I always assumed that he blew it up as he fought Gol and Maya. When you get to the Red Sage's lab, you learned that he put up more of a fight then the blue sage. Red Eco is known in the game to increase your strength, while yellow eco to volatile causing explosion. I always thought that when Gol and Maya fought the yellow sage and he fought back, he kinda... blew up his house in the ensuing fight.

@whogavehimafork2 жыл бұрын
The Yellow Sage is also sort of a stereotypical loony hillbilly - he even holds a gun staff. Given your theory, it's not hard to imagine that he would be a maniac and trigger happy combatant when Gol and Maia came knocking. Now considering his thick accent and the prevalence of yellow eco I wouldn't be surprised if the writers intended for him to have come from Boggy Swamp. The "modest" conditions Boggy Billy lived in could also be used to explain why the Yellow Sage has such a small hut (aside from the real reason probably being time constraints and cut content).
@robertthomson19942 жыл бұрын
I just don't see how it would be hard to think that Gol and Maya DID take over and in the process destroy his lab, that happened to be in a volcano while also happen to be near a Precursor temple. Gol and Maya would have more of a reason to kidnap him that way since he's right there and possibly interfering with their work. Honestly he'd probably be the first one they kidnapped working their way to the other Sages and since Red and Yellow are practically neighbors they very well could have gone after him next. Like Yellow finds this ancient temple, sets up his new lab and such (it probably was in the Swamp for a while but for whatever reason he moves), Gol and Maya show up oh hey there's a temple we can work with dark eco and eventually try to open this giant ass door oh hey one of the Sages are literally right here to "help" in getting this door unlocked, destroy his lab in a fight kidnap him move onto Red and continue til Jak shows up with Green and that whole fight goes down.

One thing I've never seen mentioned anywhere which always interested me was in a mission in Jak 2 or 3 (not sure which) there is a Crimson Guard mining operation that you have to wreck by grinding around a large drill in the center of the room and break support cables. The Crimson Guards are throwing grenades but if you get a good look at them, the grenades are actually miniature models of the dark eco canister/relic that Jak and Daxter find in the intro cutscene on Misty Island in the first game. The canister/relic is the one that lights up and Jak throws at the lurker that attacks them.

I'm so glad I reuploaded those pre-production clips of TLF all those years ago. They were originally found on a ND dev's portfolio website by users of the official PlayStation forums back in 2008. I remember when they were found I immediately downloaded them and uploaded them to KZbin in case they got removed from that website. They did get removed and that developer (can't remember who it was unfortunately) actually messaged me on KZbin asking me to remove them since news articles at the time were linking to my videos (KZbin didn't really have copyright protections back then to allow companies to strike videos and get them removed). I removed them since the dev asked me to but about half a year later I reuploaded them since they were still uploaded to other websites at the time and I figured it didn't really matter if they were on KZbin as well. If I hadn't reuploaded them they'd probably be long gone from the internet by now, especially since the computer I was on at the time is also long gone. It sucks so much it's the only stuff we can see of ND's original vision for the game.

I guess it wouldn't make sense for a bike to be present in a game all about death races (unless you want to die lol). There's only so much you can weaponize a bike in the way that Jak X: CR handled it with random drops and missiles appearing kind of like they would in Mario Kart (though obviously they made some visuals to the vehicles that could lead you to believe the vehicles had been built in mind for the use of all offensive and defensive pick ups). So to have a bike with a machine gun wouldn't be too weird...but a bike shooting grenades or missiles would be kind of weird imo lol. Or maybe it's the same reason why Halo nixed the idea of a bike and just went with a quad, who knows?

I always referred to the “white eco” in the first game as artificial light eco formed by fusing the other eco types together. Due to it being artificial, it is unstable and thus why it’s power is limited to a single blast attack. It’s different effects could also be as a result of jak still having the “pure light” inside of him, as by that point he was not touched by dark eco.
@xero10483 жыл бұрын
@@dvda9725 I know it is light eco, I heard light eco, and I call it light eco. I literally put it in quotations in my initial comment because that isn’t what I call it. I was specifying what I was referring to. The point of my comment is that it is still light eco, it’s just an artificial form since it looks and acts differently than light eco in the third game. Stop getting defensive, and start reading comments properly.
@megamillion58523 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting interpretation! I always figured the other ecos mixing to become the hidden light type was an indication that light eco is the summation of all eco's potential. This should subsequently make dark eco the opposite; the subtraction of all eco's potential...but it interestingly acts more like a mirror than an entirely new image, so to speak. Dark eco grants sheer strength not unlike the effects of red eco. Dark Jak's manic behavior, and especially the arcs of apparent plasma while in the form seem to indicate a connection to the effects of blue eco (Dark Jak actually does have higher movement speed, best seen when crawling). The Dark Strike ability is reminiscent of the yellow eco blast, but likely has more destructive potential. And finally, the scrapped idea that Dark Jak would cost significant health appears to mirror the effects of green eco, which heals. In any case, I've noted these similarities for years, and it's been my most engaging headcanon. This theory also begs even more questions, funnily enough.
@xero10483 жыл бұрын
@@megamillion5852 Thats a good point actually, dark eco in the second and third games also appears strikingly similar (apart from colour obviously) to the light eco from the first game. That being, a globular almost liquid substance. This would have mirrored light eco even better in the third game, had they kept it's original design. Instead it was changed to a more spherical ball of light. Perhaps light eco exists in two forms as I stated in my original comment. A pure form, utilised by the precursors and seen in the third game, and an artificial form which is formed when fusing the other eco types. However, fusing the eco types together could also potentially result in dark eco forming. Essentially the same substance, simply corrupted. This would explain the similarities of dark eco to the original light eco seen in the first game, including it's ability to seemingly harness each eco's powers as well as it's almost identical appearance.
@gamingelementalist67253 жыл бұрын
@@megamillion5852 dark blast being lightning as blue eco, dark bomb being a wave as red eco, dark strike as yellow, and the ability in 2 of dark Jak being invincible as green. Light regeneration green, flash freeze blue (slowing time is actually you moving faster relatively). More of a stretch now but, sheild as red eco because it is a wave of energy protecting you instead of damaging others. And flight as yellow because it propels you and yellow eco in TPL is used to get the most hight. Just a thought.
@destructo34572 жыл бұрын
This one isn't really a mistery but a glitch, in Jak ll, if you hit a Crimson Guard, go into the shooting course (without starting it) and then go outside again the Crimson theme will play even though they aren't searching for you anymore. This doesn't look like a lot but for some reason it seems to force every zone in the game to play the second variation of their themes, so you can for example go into Mar's Tomb and hear the second variation that otherwise goes unused.
@Ct7-1173 жыл бұрын
"In the time before time, when the light bursts from the earth the answers to the questions will begin. But only begin, for still the world will not be ready to learn the truth of its past" Made me think of the planetary defense system in Jak 3 as the light eco laser fits this description perfectly, not to mention its also when the answers about what the precursors are and the scale of the universe begin. This, some of the Ideas in the Design Bible's, and some of the other stuff like the world being unfinished in TLF makes me want Jak to come back but in a new form. I know everyone wants to see Jak 4 and 'Remakes' are a touchy subject, but I'd rather see a new beginning where they have time to completely finish Jak 1's world. Hubs, no load screens, move set, enemies (including metal heads), locations, eco powers, precursor weapons, ideas, music, lore, etc. with modern limitations make my mind race. Jak is a unique game with its core move set being unlike any other game I've experienced not to mention all the little quirks that make it even better. Seeing the first game at it's truest potential would make me ecstatic.
@megamillion58523 жыл бұрын
I remember strongly sharing this sentiment a few years back. Your post especially strikes a chord with me, as TPL has my overall favorite aesthetic design in the series. Adding to that, the precursors are also my favorite iteration on the "ancient, long lost, technically advanced civilization" trope, and it sadly feels like much of the meat to their existence and culture went unexplored. While I do admittedly like the ottsel twist, I always felt like there still could've been so much more.

I know I already left a comment here, but I wanted to add in a little something to the iceberg that I personally found interesting. Keep in mind, this is mostly just speculation, though: It's my belief that there was going to be a somewhat major mechanic in Jak 3 involving the ability to ride MetalHeads. If you look through the concept art in the Scrapbook & Mega Scrapbook, one of the concept arts depict an early version of the Leaper Lizard, revealing that it was originally meant to be a "tamed" Metal Head captured by the Spargus Citizens. Also, for some environment shots of the Metal Head Nest/Tower, there are shots of Metal Heads riding on other horse-like Metal Heads, as well as several depictions of regular Metal Head Grunts riding atop larger insectoid Metal Heads. Finally, one of the concept artworks for the Metal Saur (the dinosaur like Metal Head in the desert), depict it carrying several smaller Metal Heads on it's back, in a small structure that replaced it's canon. My guess is that they were initially meant to roam the wasteland as an optional obstacle/enemy for you to encounter. Should you get close to these monsters, perhaps the smaller Metal Heads would jump out from the structure on it's back. I doubt it would have been worthy of being added onto this iceberg had it been brought up before the video was made, however, the amount of Metal Heads riding atop each other in the concept artwork had me convinced that there was a theme to it - or something like it planned. Figured it's be cool to point out.

I would have also added the small detail that some characters seem to be aware that they're in a game. Such as when Daxter, In Jak 2, is looking at the very long list that Krew gave the two for the marketing rights he'd be getting as their driver.

There is a pretty long running gag of breaking the fourth wall in the series, and in Jak 3 the character animation galleries have them speaking as though they are being interviewed about the game, like they are actors talking about what happened on set.

Regarding the typo on the precursor orb, I'm from Europe, Germany to be precise and the layout of a standard PC keyboard has the position of Z and Y switched compared to keyboards from the US for example. Traveling to Switzerland the keyboard layout is completely different than in Germany it's a country by country thing. In detail it's very complicated, some keys like [ and / are in other positions to, wich makes playing some games in the original US versions confusing.

Did you know there are green eco pickups in Jak 2 the exact same way they are seen in Jak and daxter tpl? And if you pick up 50 you will gain one bar of health. It is found in one of the side missions in the city.. near the area that leads to the arena

Can confirm, there are two collectathon side missions where you need to "clean up" green ecos scattered around isolated sections of the map. Just played through them both five minutes ago lmao

Two things: 1. I love the collab with all these different creators, and I love how passionate the fans still are for the series. 2. Even though ND has sort of left Jak & Daxter by the wayside, it makes my heart happy to see all the easter eggs in the later games. And the fact that a Daxter Easter egg made it into the R&C movie. I was never the biggest fan of R&C and I only completed the first game (on the PS3 HD collection) so I never felt the desire to watch the movie but I love the easter eggs ND and Insomniac share

I finally tried both the cheat mode and hard fishing cheat codes! I learned that if you fight Gol and Maia up to the point where Light Eco rains down and they're powering up their final attack and you get away from the arena while you have cheat mode active, don't die, and go back, they do not continue to do anything as I assume the game should think you're either dead or have already grabbed some Light Eco. The 4 Sages will still drop down Light Eco meaning you could just be bored, stand in one place, and time when one of the Light Eco drops land on you.

There's something I'm not sure was covered in this video, a small glitch you can do in Jak 2 while those security barriers are still up. If you time it just right, you can make Jak hop into a zoomer that's clipped through the wall, and if you get Jak to hop in, sometimes the game will kill you and make you go splat. Not sure how common that knowledge is, but I think it's kinda neat
@jakekneega74003 жыл бұрын
So, here's an idea, haven't watched the whole thing so don't know if this gets brought up. Does the community agree that us opening up the Precursor portal is what led to the future being as screwed up as it was? Like, from what I understand and the way the game frames it, the only reason the Metal Heads were able to take control of essentially the known inhabitable world aside from what would become Haven City is BECAUSE we gave Kor a direct entrance to the past that we ended up hiding Jak's child self in. Samos, at the start of the game, outright says "So *this* is how it happened" implying that he still retains memories of his time in the future we end up arriving in. That tells me that he always wondered why the Metal Heads were so prevalent and how things got so bad, and finally realized that it was their mucking about with technology they *didn't actually understand* that led to a world where a tyrannical government and a warrior-based society in a barren wasteland are your only options for some measure of safety. Yes, Jak acknowledges that "This horrible place is our world" but then the question never becomes *"How the hell did this all happen?"* Personally, I think you, as the player, were almost supposed to infer that Daxter's opening of the portal is what screwed things up and allowed the events you play through to take place, but I dunno, I've never seen anyone talk about it and I never had the thought until I beat the PS4 HD version and really started thinking about things.

I’ve actually read the entirety of the Jak and Daxter Gag Manga, and… I dunno how to summarize my experience. It was possibly even more insane than the Crash or Klonoa manga (and keep in mind, those had scenes where Crash fell into Apu Apu’s butt, and a scene where Klonoa bleeds from the head after a fridge is dropped on him. All that said, as crazy as it was, I did absolutely love the gag manga. I really love the way that Jak and Daxter are drawn in it, and there are some amazing expressions. I feel like they could’ve made some awesome anime commercials or shorts in a similiar art style and I’d absolutely love em. If any of you have any questions about the gag manga feel free to ask me

That’s great!! These old game adaptions do deserve all the love they can get, imo. Considering they’re often drawn and written by just one person, it’s incredible how long the manage to go, and seeing a mangaka put that much effort into a series we love, well it’s very inspiring. And I really do hope the lost Daxter manga chapters are found. I read the majority of it during my Japan trip, back in high school, I unfortunately didn’t think to actually buy any volumes or take any photos of the magazines I read while I was there. I really do encourage archival of this lost media though, since there are a huge amount of manga adaptions that were never rereleased outside of magazines and are now lost, even for surprisingly big franchises. The holy grails of my lost manga search rn are the rest of the Daxter and Crash manga, the variety of Pokémon manga that were not rereleased, especially the short chapter long adaptions of each of the films that were released in a magazine called “4 Students” (so obscure it’s not even Google-able) and also that one gag manga that was made early in Pokemon’s first generation and has some absolutely crazy stuff in it (like actually pretty politically incorrect / offensive humor, lol)

Thank you to everyone who made this video. It's nice to know I'm not the only person who has fond memories of not only Jak & Daxter, but Sly, Bentley & Murray & Ratchet & Clank as well. If Naughty Dog dislike the Lost Frontier, then why don't they set aside a team of people within the company to make the Lost Frontier & Daxter? There must be loads of people needing work right now
