I think that the “Im healthier than you think” part means that she’s telling them she’s mentally healthy or theres nothing wrong with her mind, like she got told that she’s unstable or something.
@Nyanfood3 жыл бұрын
I think so too. In Japan, mental illness still isn't really seen as various conditions and is often interpreted as insanity all across the board, meaning depression and anxiety is sometimes lumped together with psychopathy and schizophrenia, which are also just not well-understood and are widely feared. The "I'm healthier than you think" within that context, to me, sounds like someone suggested she might be psychotic just because she had a moment of weakness from the pressure.

Apart from this, I think she is annoyed of the older generation for defining/lecturing about what is good and what is bad for the younger generation, and limiting the younger generation from some experiences just because they think it is bad/unhealthy (e.g., playing video games, going out with friends/partying)

A messed up setup might make a person grow with a messed up perspective aswell, If the song is going for her to express her rage against that setup I think that would be a really interesting point that the author made her be a "bad person" (on a general perspective, like, swearing and saying egocentric lines on it), makes it feel more impactfull, like a "look what that did to me" thing. It still open to interpretation anyways, and that's also nice (edit just to add, I'm aware of that last part, but since It's by the end it doesn't change the impression from that rest of the music so it still gets a very cool impact)

@クハレンコボゴダル3 жыл бұрын
Tbh i didn't understood the song by 100% and i'm gonna try to explain why. I know, that japanese society is really strict in a lots of aspects. According to that, people is always under pressure of society, school, parents, which is always telling you to be that "succesful" and "right" person, who always need to follow the rules and social standarts, which you've never had a chance to change. The system works that way, and because of that, people have no choise but to follow the rules. As the time goes, a human slowly turns into the robot, who can only do what is "right". The saddest thing is that a very low amount of people can actually understand what they need to do in that case, so they're literally dying from overwork or commiting suicide. The thing i did not understood of that song is who one is blamed - the people, who always acting as robots and doing all what society told them to do, or a system, which have made people to behave that way, or maybe both? I would appreciate what kind of thoughts you have about it.
@ashutoshkaushik91183 жыл бұрын
@@クハレンコボゴダル I think she's talking about the society. Because if you see, society creats the system. It's the long-running traditions and practices that led the rise of the over-working culture. It's not as if suddenly some rich people decided that they'll overwork their employees to death. If you see, people who do not fit in with crowd well, are always looked down upon in Japan, usually by the elders and people in power. I think she's trying to resonate the feelings of the people going through what she's saying in the song. I think Yuta slightly missed the mark on this one. Like other people, I definitely get the "gifted kid" vibe from this song. Someone who was considered "bright" or a "genius" for their age eventually goes on to live a completely normal adult life. I think Ado expresses really well the frustration young people experience when they realize this letdown. I mean, imagine hearing for 15 years that you're special, gifted, a genius... and suddenly finding out that you're totally average as an adult. It's pretty crushing. Take a look at these lyrics: "Before I knew it, I was already grown up" "I'm not having enough fun, something is missing - this better be somebody's fault" "I'm fed up with those rehashed parodies" (this one is a little unclear, i think it refers to the same thing as two lines below) "I'm your 'so called' genius." (As others have pointed out, this is sarcasm) "How many times do I have to listen to those memories?" This person clearly KNOWS they aren't exemplary anymore. It's still part of who they are, but they're angry that someone 'lied' to them that they were special. And this happens to kids EVERYWHERE all the time now. "I am the modern spokesperson."

exactly, I like Yuta, but it seems that the toxic psychology of Japan kinda is even in him, since he didn't understand the reason behind the song. She isn't singing about being better than their bosses and older people, she sings about disliking the way most people live, and that's absolutely acceptable and normal. the social norm almost everywhere just has its mistakes, and that is what she is singing about, she is singing about the mistakes and how if you don't want to do them you are not ill but you are actually healthier than their corrupted mind. idk why Yuta interpreted this thing as something literally totally different, like he is talking about oranges but the song is about apples.

This video... is sarcastic right? This describes literally all of my friends here in Japan and they’ll say it. This generation is stuck between what we’ve been told and how things are working out. Reality is not a form of "oppression", it just is. Japan can't print trillions and trillions of special dollar currency paired to petroleum and nations reserves without going into recession again. The only thing the U.S subsidies is their defense as the EU. Japan also can't receive billions from Brussels like Greece, Italy or Spain. You actually need to work or study there. Japan is hurting still from the ridiculous never ending "stimulus" started 1997. They tried copying America's cheese and Brussels when that's something that can't possibly work with the yen (plus demographics and pensions).

The "I'm your so-called genius" line makes me feel like it's less her thinking of herself as a genius (as you said, 8th grader syndrome) and it's more about mental burnout. Especially since she specifically says "your so-called genius", instead of something like "a so-called genius". I don't know how to explain it properly, but I'm not thinking of this song as her being overconfident, but rather like: "I'm not special, I just _did my job!_ If other people also did their job, I'd be seen as normal. I wouldn't have gotten all this pressure on me and could just live the calm life that I want to live!" At least, that's my take on it. A girl who's tired of being seen as special when she's not doing anything special. Not that she doubts herself either, just "I'm just doing my job, leave me alone..."
@damianovargas3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I believe it's more about expectations; she doesn't think she's a genius, but people expect her to be one. I don't think it has anything to do with chuunibyou, just the frustration of a newly-graduated student becoming a normal adult (especially since Ado, the singer, is only 19). It could be she thinks other people are mediocre because they can't see they're only causing pain (rather than making her a successful person or "genius"), or something among those lines. Ado used to be an utaite, someone who covers vocaloid songs, and while those people really are notorious for never leaving their room and/or not having real life friends, doesn't "healthy" usually mean young? In a sense that people shouldn't pressure her because she's too young to meet all expectations. It's what I always thought.

She was always doing her best to match others expectations and she has been doing it so well that they started calling her genius, but she's fed up with it, because she doesn't think it makes her special and in fact she thinks it's better to be just medicore. And those who are medicore are seen like that not by her, but by society. They don't care so mutch about being this "so-called genius", but they just try to be happy instead, whitch is why they can't understand her. So yeah, something similar to what you said. Although it's just my opinion. Also sorry for mistakes, I hope it's possible to understand what I'm trying to say

I have my own opinion. Usually being a pushover (me being one) always heard this line "you're good, you're better than this. you're really good, a genius" whatever and the work always fall to me because I'm good at it, but i dont see myself as a genius, or even them. They only saying that to justify their action to give loads of work on me. So from her perspective, she probably being sarcastic saying "yep, to you, i'm that so-called genius you're always mentioning" like that.

This song is talking about the struggles of living in Japan. "The nail that sticks out must be hammered down" the song talks about her following the rules living as japan sees fit. But the moment you stand out. Its like theres something wrong with you. I live here and have long hair and for a guy thats a big no to do. People will ask repeatedly why dont you cut it? Or why do you let it grow. Japan has this habit of not giving you freedom while saying you are free to do what you want at the cost of you being attacked for doing so. Ado is a closet NEET or shut-in. She knows the struggles of japan and how they see her. This is a big issue in Japan bc the young are loving a song saying to break free and not to waste your life conforming to what people expect of you. And the older generation want to keep everyone in line so they hate the song.

The way I actually interpret this song is very different. The way I see it, it is told from the perspective of someone who grew up always being touted by their superiors as so-called gifted, and always being told about how everyone has very high expectations of them, which they so far have upheld flawlessly. This expression of outrage is just them completely snapping and blowing up at everything when life's inherent stupidity gets the better of them. This is Ado's expression of disappointment and fury at what happens when pure unfiltered greed completely takes over society and overshadows the value of the individual.

I'd never heard this before, but I think the lyrics aren't that bad. I wouldn't care if my (Japanese) son listened to this, because I know it's not going to affect his behaviour or way of speaking. Society is already far too restrictive anyway. People need an outlet for their stress. It was interesting to see Yuta talking about achievements as being the measure of exceptionality. It's certainly the easier way to describe it, but as a teacher, I see a lot of students who are very talented but had struggled because they have atypical learning styles. These people are judged as being lesser when it is the system that has failed them. And to be fair, the educational systems in many countries are shockingly bad, even if people are too proud to admit it. Another thing to keep in mind is that the world is designed for average people. Those with exceptional abilities often have to hide themselves to fit in, especially in societies with tall-poppy syndrome, and when they do express themselves, they can often be viewed as weird or egotistical by people who are unable to understand. So, just because someone doesn't get good grades or is young, don't write them off as untalented. In some cases they maybe capable of far more than anyone around them, if they are given a chance.

I would always be told by the people around me that i'm smart etc. (When i was a kid obviously) But when it comes to actually considering my opinions they go with the typical: they are right because they are the adults. I remember snapping back at them with a "if i'm your so fucking called "genius" who you shower with these (empty) praises why can't you try to understand the point i'm trying to make?" The end of this was me breaking under the pressure. At this point my life is aimless and i grew uncaring towards how i will end up. Studying which was considerably easy for me back then became the hardest shit ever. When i sit down to study none of the words stick with me anymore. It was as if i didn't even sit down to study. The years of conflicts between me and my parents (mostly my mom) broke something in me. I just wanted to be heard, but they didn't want to hear it. My relationship with my mother is mostly patched up, but it will never be the same since i can't just forget about all of this. Some time ago she admitted to fucking up on that department. She made me study hours upon hours without stop because that's what she did when she was a kid. When i asked her why she said because she isn't as smart as me when it comes to studying. I could memorize things really fast. Due to this one question popped into my little head. If i'm better at studying why does she make me study the same amount as she did back then? My mother had this what matters is how many hours you study mentality. My father had the study until you got it mentality. My father tried to talk to my mother about it, but as you can guess that didn't work out. But it turns out i do have something that the majority doesn't. she specifically said "*SO* called genius" rather than "I am a genius" meaning OTHER people called her something like "a talented kid","well behaved kid" , etc., growing up. She even clarifies at the end that she never thought of herself as special (therefore also clarifies that others placed her in a pedestal and expects much from her, maybe ever since a younger age). And because she's always been expected to be the best and do good since she's called "a genius", mishaps or slip ups here and there is almost always considered a failure, and then they get berated for it no matter how minor it is. Thus leading to the chorus, where she's pent up with this type of expectation and just asks them to shut up wwww this is very common in Asian culture, so I find that a lot of people my age find it relatable. It's a song that voices out common frustrations when it comes to meeting everybody's expectations, plus it's catchy so it's understandable how it became very famous (and infamous, for the older generation 草)

I personally read "I'm your 'so called' genius" as the expectations and praise for following them instead of the character in the song being overconfident and convinced that they are special and have a talent that nobody else has (though im not at all fluent in japanese and my ability to pick up tone in japanese is extremely lackluster).
@haze31033 жыл бұрын
i also interpreted it the same way, i felt like the lines were very sarcastic and were aimed at the ppl who used to call her a genius just bc she was the "proper/model student" and not like "i'm a genius, i'm the most special person ever"

I feel like it could be both. Like, maybe they feel they have a hidden talent that's being forced out, while being praised for something else their forced into. I feel like the traditionalism of Japan is similar to that of the Philippines in that regard. Their forced into being great academically while their true talent (if any) is stuck undeveloped, so on one hand they're frustrated for being forced into a box, while possibly overestimating the talent they do have because they haven't had the chance to use it (although usually, what happens is the person understimates the talent and suppresses it even more, thinking it isn't worth it because it's being forced out of them by others).

This song is literally talking about a parent's high expectation for their children to the point where the child tries everything to not disappoint them. They have been treated more like an adult than a child due to their parents. When she grows up she notices that everything about her being a genius was just her being average. She has Gifted-Kid Burnout.
@MightyDantheman6 ай бұрын
I think some people are misunderstanding what this song is saying. This song has a theme of saying "shut up" right after something that she rejects. The "I'm your so-called genius" was one of those lines followed by "shut up", because she doesn't agree with that. It also says "your" not "a", which typically implies that it's somebody else's opinion rather than her own. At least from the subtitles on the song's video, the song seems to actually be about being tired of being what other people want her to be. I think this is very relatable to a lot of people, especially when forced down a path that one might have no interest in. It leads to having to fake one's self while suffering internally. She seems to be saying that she's not who you (they) want her to be and she's not unhealthy for being different. But that's just my interpretation from the English lyrics as a non-Japanese person.

Yuta, my point of view on the meaning of these words is not that the main character actually believes to be superior or a genius of any sort, but in fact internalized people's desire to see her and treat her as such by telling her to grow as a "good kid" and as an obedient employee. Naturally anybody who sees a person who grew up as a good kid, works as a good and obedient employee and lives their life, essentially almost like a robot, performing the exact same boring tasks every day would either internalize that and live in a loop that they just can't break due to social pressure or absolutely snap and tell everyone around them to shut up and express their views and feelings about those frustrations.

I feel like you miss the point. If you even consider that she was labled gifted in school or a genius then gets thrown into a work force wherr shes made to pour drinks at mandatory after hours drinking and is being disrespected because shes young then i think that maybe just maybe this song is about how older people are stuck in there ways and is rebelious in anti agism. Ageism is a big issue in japan cause the elders are stuck in trh 80 and 90s when the world is so much more advanced socially and technologically. A young employee migbt be able to out preform her supiors with modern technologies and fresh eyes. I understand why older adults hate it but i wouldnt related this to chunibiyo.

Yuta tried so hard not to shame the song for being rebellious. He is even a person who has broken free of the business culture by being a self employed creator and yet couldn't help himself. "Chūnibyō" is definitely sometimes used as a derogatory term for people trying to be different. I feel that energy coming from Yuta here.
