When you order a cocktail at the upscale bar in Japan, bartenders high-quality ingredients and clear ice. But they also chill all the equipment and spirits before using them. whiskey, Vodka, or Gin
At a low temperature, spirits get a nice silkier texture since the viscosity of liquid increases and it's smoother to drink it straight up
This also helps to minimize dilution.

Fun fact: the Japanese like clear and smooth alcohol so much that when whiskey was first brought to Japan it was a major bust, hardly anyone bought it because of the smoky color. So the Japanese men that brought whiskey to Japan then took, I can't remember exactly, something like 5 years breaking down every facet of whiskey and trying many different processes while still trying to stay faithful to classic whiskey. After many years of work the eventually came out with the very first Japanese whiskey, which was specifically tailored to Japanese tastes and preferences - namely it was clear instead of smoky and had a smoother taste. The two men that brought whiskey to Japan eventually split and created their own breweries which are still running today, over 100 years later

As a Japanese, I would like to express my personal opinion. In Japan, smoky flavors such as Ardbeg are not so popular (although this depends on the person). Popular flavors are mild and easy to drink, such as Seabass Regal, Canadian Club, Ballantine's, etc.
@darlsbarkley3493
@darlsbarkley3493 20 күн бұрын
@@Stumbo99 clear color and smokey flavor aren't mutually exclusive. The smoke that many people associate with scotch whisky comes from the peat smoke used to dry the malted barley. The color comes from being aged in oak casks. A clear (unaged) new make from peated malt would actually be more smokey than it's oak aged counterpart. I don't think Yamazaki ever bottled much new make spirit, if any at all but they've always produced a relatively light spirit compared to some of the distilleries in Scotland.

The reason why it seems smoother after it has been chilled in a freezer is because we didn’t evolve to be able to taste extreme temperatures and is a way we trick our brains

Many drinks like the martini rely on dilution to get the correct ABV. Using frozen gin in a martini essentially means you will get less dilution, and the drink will be smaller, and more concentrated. I think that is counter to the nature of the drink, it shouldn’t just be spirit in the glass. A real martini is highly drinkable, with a proper amount of vermouth and dilution from the ice when stirred.

as a fellow bartender Frozen liquors are for beginners, the syrupy texture and chill temperature are very pleasant, just to have a treat. But i recommend to do it with sweet drinks mostly, like irish cream, coffee liquor, passoa, orange liqueur... If you want to taste the complexity of a drink 14 degrees is the perfect temperature Not every drinking session has to be so complex, just drink responsably and enjoy your spirits.

For new drinkers who wanna take shots. Liquor doesn’t really freeze and it goes down way smoother. Learned this in college and it’s a great way to make shots of really cheap liquors go down smoother.

Dilution is an important part of the cocktail recipe though. An old fashioned is primarily whiskey and water (if made right). Try freezing whiskey and adding sugar and bitters to it…it’ll be overly sweet, rougher, and closed up. That isn’t to say freezing is bad, but you have to know what drinks it works for and add water to one’s it doesn’t (or use pebble ice for more dilution than you get with larger cubes, for example).
@Spideygang621
@Spideygang621 2 жыл бұрын
They’re pros and cons. Yes it does make. The ice melts slower which doesn’t dilute it as quick. However, booze has less taste the colder it is. You get the full flavor of bourbon when it’s meat or just a little ice. It’s why real cheap light beer they tell you to drink ice cold, because you don’t wanna drink that stuff at closer to room temp lol.. you can taste it better.

I’ll always chill my liquor. I’ve found the texture to be silky just as you stated. Just my opinion. As someone mentioned, whiskey “frozen” compared to “room temp” has a different flavor. Not bad at all, just an opinionated taste, which I prefer.

I always keep my base liquors in the freezer, a bottle of vodka, a bottle of Gin, vodka, white rum, and a bottle of Southern comfort, which is not really a base liquor but when you're doing shots of Southern comfort it goes down a lot smoother when it's been chilled. I don't keep my top shelf stuff in there though, just my middle shelf stuff. The stuff I use on a regular basis if it does affect the taste I never notice it, and what you get in return it makes it worth it
