Jauffre would be the one to know he lives quietly as a monk at Weynon Priory
I've always thought Jauffre was idiotic, but honestly I can't think of any strategy that would have made sense given what he knew at the time. The emperor and his sons were presumably well guarded in fortified strongholds, didn't matter. The emperor was escaping through a super-secret tunnel; didn't matter, the mythic dawn knew the secret tunnels within the secret tunnel better than the Blades. Only Jauffre knew both that Martin was Uriel's son, and where Martin currently lived. Again, didn't matter. At that point, strategy is pointless. The mythic dawn were successful at every turn (except the last, arguably), because the plot wanted them to be.

In Jauffres defence: The Hero is not supposed to deliver the Amulet of Kings to the Weynon Priory. All he had to do was to: #1: Take Amulet of Kings from Emperors Corpse #2: Leave the Sewers #3: Go to the Temple of the One #4: Phase through the Mainentrance by magical power #5: Open the half burried door to summon Mehrunes Dagon #6: Reenter the Temple and meditate for one Day and Night to summon Martin Septim #7: Give him the Amulet of Kings Shouldn't take more than 5 Minutes. @jacobkleinsasser56585 жыл бұрын
@Space Hitler You overestimate how easy it would be to put strain on Cloud Ruler Temple's supplies. Logistically CRT is HORRIBLY set up in several different ways. 1. Location. The only way for it to get supplied is via that 1 road. It would only take a dozen or so men/women to take out supply wagons going in and out. We encounter several dozen if not hundred throughout the game. Plus, you have the unlimited man power of Oblivion at your disposal! Set up an Oblivion gate on the road. If that is too close to Bruma to realistically set up, then set up miles away in the middle of nowhere and have the deadra forces march to the road. Manpower is not an issue. 2. Secrecy. This is the SECRET HQ of the Blades. So the Empire is put in the no win situation of either revealing it's location to ask for assistance, which then would draw in more enemy forces to that location, or don't and the Blades become demoralized because they have no backup. And demoralized troops are far more likely to break. 3. We are not only talking about food. We are, more importantly talking about water! There is only so much snow up there for them to melt, into drinking water, so they would VERY quickly run out and, we can see in the game, it does not snow nearly regularly enough for them to adequately get enough water. So if you can prevent them from supplying for a week, you would have crippled them.

If Jauffre were to hide the amulet in a different/more secret location, would the Mythic Dawn not be able to find it? They had no way of knowing it was at Weynon Priory in the first place unless they get their information psychically or through super sneaky spies or something, which they obviously do hence the attack on Weynon Priory. If Jauffre were to keep the amulet on his person then the Mythic Dawn could easily kill him and take the amulet, if they can kill the emperor, they can kill Jauffre.
@Commandant_Aeon4 жыл бұрын
killing the emperor need only an opportunity as he is untrained. Killing a trained man need a lot of effort, even an old one. Moreover the Grandmaster of the blades should be one trained not only in combat but also in spying and counter-intelligence, the fact that he failed badly in the CI part and was subpar in the Spy part tell a lot about his competence. He isn't stupid, just really incompetent at its job and it can be explained by his advanced age. He should have retired and let Renault lead the blades (Baurus would have been the next in line).
@greensheep49185 жыл бұрын
If I were Jauffre, I'd have kept the amulet on me at all times. To protect Martin, i'd have used the fortress as a last ditch effort to make a stand and protect Martin if other good hiding spots are inaccessible. -Don't hunker down in one place too long. -Don't travel in large groups. You'll leave too big of a footprint. -Send small bands out to supply, changing destinations and routes every time to make it harder to track you. It Probably would have been easiest to meet up with Martin in a location in the Imperial City and light the fires then and there. Once Dagon was taken care of, then head after the Mythic Dawn. Or split in teams, one to hunt the Mythic Dawn and the other to re light the fires.

Why Mehrunes Dagon is a GENIUS: every time he's shoved his hideous face into the affairs of TES games, he's ultimately fulfilled his sphere of destruction, of revolution, of violent overthrow of the established order, of change, of hope. He may seem like a giant mindless monster but he is one of the greatest of long-term schemers in the universe of TES.

Funny enough, you're definitely not wrong here. His invasion during Oblivion seems like a Xanatos Gambit to me. If the invasion fails (As it did), he still destabilized the Empire significantly and paved the road for major changes down the road (Literally one of the first actions the Mythic Dawn did was assassinate all of Uriel Septim's heirs and then Uriel himself). Being the Daedric Prince of Change and Ambition, this would certainly benefit him. And of course, if the invasion succeeds, then he wins.

@sfg gh Dagon can't do anything right, but he does causes some destruction in his petty attempts to conquer the world, so at least he's following his sphere correctly. To be fair, despite all the power the daedric prices have, they are all quite petty and useless.

The destruction was worse in other provinces. In the Summerset Isles, their capital was destroyed along with the Crystal Tower. The Towers are part of what holds Nirn together. He was in The Imperial City to stop the relighting of the Dragonfires and tear down the White Gold Tower down, but got stopped by Martin randomly using the Amulet to turn into Akatosh (maybe he learned something in the Mysterium Xarxes). Ironically, the Amulet was what gave the Tower magic stabilizing power, now it really is just a useless building. Dagon got a half victory, basically, he caused Destruction and Revolution, but he didn't get to use Nirn as a farm for more soldiers. The only real motivation he could have other than destruction is using Nirn as an advantage over other Daedra when he starts a war with them next

I don't think he was a idiot but rather he was trying to be very cautious. When the player find him at Weynon Priory and say to the player that he must find Martin he probably would want to wait for the player there so the player can return and then they would make the next movie. Where he would hide the amulet would be a fast decision because i don't think he would be able to go up to Cloud Ruler Temple hide the amulet and be able to go back to Weynon Priory because of his age. The desk would probably be the only real safe place in his mind because he wanted to be there when the player returns. When you do get to Cloud Ruler Temple and he barely does anything i think it is out of the fact that he would want himself to be there if Martin ever gets endangered. He got more combat experince then you (in theory) and therefor felt the need to be cautious and stay at Martin side and let you do the errands. A much better idea would make you and Brother Piner aid Baurus in the Imperial City. Brother Piner is a experinced warrior compared to you (based on the story). Atleast he could recall most of the blades that were not on Undercover missions in Cyrodill to come and defend Martin. Therefor he would release himself of the pressure and would be able to go to work. To recap, i don't think Jauffre is a idiot but he is very cautious and being under pressure at the same time. He needs to make fast decisions and still help Martin and the player to defeat Mehrunes Dagon which is not easy. Imagine being him in the desperate times.

Here’s what he could have done: 1. Hide the amulet in Cloud Ruler Temple. On horseback Jauffre can outspeed any potential threats, and he’d have the aid of Prior Maberel if he needed it. 2. Hide the Amulet in Castle Chorrol. Most Mythic Dawn agents are lower-class citizens, so it’s unlikely that it would be infiltrated by spies, and there’d be tons of guards to help defend it. 3. Deliver it to the Imperial City. It’s a long ride, but surely it would be possible to deliver it there, or even have the Hero of Kvatch deliver it. Speaking of which... 4. LET THE PLAYER KEEP IT WITH THEM. I can get his hesitation with having the player go into Oblivion with it, but he also could’ve just instructed them to deliver it to Chancellor Ocato, where it would be kept completely safe. I don’t think the Hero of Kvatch would be strong enough at such an early point in their journey to defend the Amulet of Kings on their own. That’s why Jauffre takes it at the beginning of the game, where it could be protected more reliably. This is implying that the first thing your character would do as soon as they left prison. It’s not a secret you were in prison, The Emperor basically gave you a pardon, which was verified by Baurus, and he knows you have the amulet. If you didn’t go to Weynon Prior he’d probably know and come after you, as well as putting a ridiculous bounty for stealing the most important relic in the Empire that pretty much every citizen knows about. Also when you’re escaping the Imperial Prison with Uriel Septim, the Mythic Dawn are wayyy stronger than you at normal difficulty. Without the Blades (who can also cut you down in seconds), the tutorial and prologue of Oblivion would be much more difficult. Sure you can argue your specific custom made character would be super strong and awesome and could totally protect the Amulet of Kings on their own! Plus, the Mythic Dawn don’t even know who I am, I’m just some random person. The Mythic Dawn found literally all their targets, because they were very good at infiltrating and stealing information secretly, while maintaining a vast network of agents across Cyrodil. All they’d have to do is look at the Imperial Prison’s records and know your name, race, what you look like, past crimes, etc. Imperials kept good records y’all. TL;DR So the Mythic Dawn would immediately target you, a character weakened from being in prison instead of Weynon Prior. In the context of the story you immediately go there after escaping Prison (maybe get a few supplies in the City, whatever), so it’s not safe with you. Yet. Jauffre probably regrets not just leaving the Amulet of Kings with you after the main quest is over. At the time he took it from you, it was the smarter, safer decision. He had no way of knowing you’d play such a large role in the Oblivion Crisis. That early in the game’s story, you were basically a nobody with no real power to fight the Mythic Dawn on your own.

I mean it is strange that if you ignore the main quest you can have the Amulet with you on any number of crazy adventures in different guilds, and even in the Shivering Isles. You can even go into Dagon's realm of oblivion by closing the Kvatch gate and liberating Kvatch before being sent there (but can't do anything with Martin) and across all of this craziness, the Amulet is in no danger of being lost. It doesn't even get removed from you if you are thrown into prison. And yet the very moment you hand it off to Jauffre it is doomed.

It's very cool to see new videos of oblivion ! I feel like this game, because it is now pretty old is quite underrated

First time I played Oblivion and went back to Weylon Priory and saw he lost the amulet I was just like “bruhhhhhhh this would’ve been safer with me and I just went into hell”
@actualmadscientist5 жыл бұрын
My other problem: why didn't Jauffre bring the amulet to the nearby city of Chorrol and just explain to the count/countess why the amulet should be heavily protected at all times by only the most trustworthy and capable guards, perhaps even storing the amulet inside a secret vault or the like? Surely the item required to prevent an apocalypse would be safer inside a protected city rather than his closet?

Hey, Sean Bean voiced Martin. If anything, his death was preordained.

Well, personally the amulet of kings was felt safer in the hands of the player and seeking out Martin septum would of maid a competent choice.

His idiocy becomes apparent in the first lines of dialogue already, when he repeatedly asks about information you have already given him. Like 'scue me ol' fart are you daft?

I mean he maybe very old, but true it does not excuse a lot of the mistakes that he made. Personally, I'd say that he could've made up for his mistakes by sending some blades to help you during the main quest line.

Having companions in Bethesda games is like wearing a bell around your neck. In Skyrim warriors are just practice dummies for archers and mages. Shields are useless until you level them to like 70.

The pirates cove, frostcraig spyre, and that vampire den coulda been super helpful for hiding the amulet.

Also, when you leave Camoran's Paradis, the player has to 'escort' Martin to the Imperial City. I don't know if it was Joffrey's idea and in fact, as a player you can simply fast travel there. But, in realty, this is just the Hero of Kvatch and Martin, with the Amulet of Kings, walking half Cyrodiil alone while Joffrey and the Blades guard an empty castle.

Man, jauffre is the grandmaster of the blades and is tasked with keeping Dovakiins in tamriel alive to protect the world from daedra. Yet the only plan he has If the emperor got assassinated is to sit and do nothing while some outsider does the work is bullshit. He had decades of planning multiple scenarios revolving around the emperors death, he should have had a plan A,B,C,D and all the way down to F. Thank God Martin can read and knows what to do because jauffre is the most lazy, ignorant, pompous fool I've ever seen. Looking back at how great oblivion was I hate that the main questline is ruined because 75% of the questline is fixing this idiots mistakes. This guy is hardly qualified to watch my dog, let alone watching over Martin, the emperor, and the amulet of kings. If jauffre wasnt a confirmed blade I'd think he was a mythic dawn spy. Because it seems like he goes out of his way to incompetently sabotage the blades and all of tamriel

I remember eventually getting around to the main quest, and jauffre was scowling at me as though he despised me. I then spent the battle of bruma putting him on his ass. He just wouldn't let up. Totally an idiot.

I honestly got so pissed when he didn’t just send it to the cloud ruler temple. And your point about them being mages doesn’t make an absolute minute amount of difference, as they are easy as hell to kill in the game.
@sanghelian3 жыл бұрын
that losing amulet of kings/relocating to cloud ruler temple bit is kinda unfair, because jauffre's decisionmaking has logic in it. "well, apparently hiding plot relevant stuff in inconspicuous locations doesn't work against mythic dawn, so lets change strategy, and hide plot relevant stuff in heavily fortified yet isolated place, that is so specific that anyone approaching it who is not hero of kvatch is instantly outed as mythic dawn agent. And it works, the main quest had that section where mythic dawn sleeper agents got caught because they were hanging out suspiciously close to cloud ruler. every town had sleeper agents, but only they got caught because of tactical choice

I mean, he's a retired old man who was living in a religious commune outside a random city, farming potatoes and reading.
@adamxei90732 жыл бұрын
Well he was definitely made as a supporting character. It's an elder scrolls games. If had come back from one mission that Jauffre sent you on and he shows that he has done 2/3rds of the work, it would feel like you didn't get to have hours of gameplay and rather inferior. I agree that the amulet was definitely safer in moving hands then idles one but being the grandmaster of the Blades he would want such a thing close by, as I imagine a lot of people would in his shoes. Jauffre is old as well and playing the defensive is the best he can do, he does have a high chance of dying during the Bruma gate quest.

The Mythic Dawn had a man inside the Blades (obviously). So he could have been an absolute genius and the next coming of Sun Tzu and it wouldn’t matter, that amulet was going to fall into the hands of the MD.

In my game play he kept attacking me because I killed a monk by accident so after I finished the game he attacks me and the guy who is meant to say well done kills him
@armadylan35263 жыл бұрын
I think that something more idiotic than his hiding place is how he kept it a secret only he knew. As he hadn't told a second trustworthy person or the player who he should obviously be able to trust because we just handed him the Amulet of Kings, means that if he died or was kidnapped then the Amulet would be hidden with nobody knowing where to find it (although he did hide it in a place where you could find it easily).
@theratking0135 жыл бұрын
I carried the Amulett for ingame Months if not a Year before contuining the Main Quest...and the Safest Place to keep the Amulett of Kings would be the Player afterall ,as the Player you are on the Move non stop and going from Place to Place,from Quest to Quest,from Guild to Guild and its so randomly that its looking like Madness to the Mystic Dawns Leaders to predict where you go next.
