Joan Jett's signature tune is a foot-stomping, female-empowerment anthem that transformed the former Runaways guitarist into a bonafide rock star. But the song also changed her in ways she never could have dreamed of.

I have never ever thought of that song as female empowerment. Other than it being sung by a woman. Same as I never thought of her cover of _Crimson and Clover_ as being about lesbians. They're just great songs..

Good and solid point.. But 90% of her hits are covers. I don't think any of her songs that made it big was written by her

@@johnnyguitar6639 There’s a Joan Jett biography written by David Thompson(?) and it says she kinda helped the original artist to gain popularity. I have heard the Crimson and Clover original and don’t really the original version, because I’m used to Joan’s version. If you pay attention some/most her covers are actually British, she was transporting songs to America.

@@johnnyguitar6639 In the beginning of being Joan’s fan I never thought either it was lesbian or anything, but 2 years ago I was 16 and I saw The Runaways so… obviously me being 16 I thought Crimson and Clover would be lesbian song. Lol

I'm a huge fan of the Sweet, and she did a pretty good remake of their song AC/DC.

Joan Jett covered one of my brother's songs. It's on her 'Bad Reputation' album, and it's entitled-'Too Bad On Your Birthday'. It was original recorded by a group called Rambam; and in the days of 45 rpm vinyl, it was the b-side of their song-'Black Betty'. Living with us at the time was Herbie Worthington, who was Stevie Nicks' photographer. He also did the cover photos for Lita Ford's "Out For Blood" album. Curiously enough, I discovered recently that I share the same birthday (September 19th.) as Lita Ford. Hmm.

@@virginiawilliams7282 Well, excuse me! Yes, I meant Ram Jam. Rambam is the acronym/nickname for a Jewish sage from many years ago (Moses Maimonides); which reminds me: In the early 80s, my brother auditioned for Gene Simmons for a slot opening up in Kiss. Gene Simmons, originally Chaim Witz, originally a rabbinical student. Hmm.

@romanticandperky I think you may have taken that a little too personally. It was a name correction, not an insult. The correction was made due to someone else asking me about it. Your brother has auditioned for some well-known musicians. Who does he or has he played with? I'm asking out of curiosity.
@romanticandperky

@@virginiawilliams7282 I didn't take it as an insult-not at all! My brother (now deceased-sigh) has played with Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Johnny Winter, Miles Davis, Carlos Santana, Arthur Lee (of 'Love'), Meatloaf, Keith Richards, and Ritchie Blackmore. He also met Rod Stewart, Michael Jackson, and David Bowie. He never Joan Jett or any of the members of Ram Jam, but they both recorded 'Too Bad On Your Birthday'. He also was in a band with Danny Kortchmar, who was Carole King's guitarist; and with bassist Harvey Brooks, who, among other things, was the bass player on The Doors' "Touch Me". And at the time he co-wrote the song-'Too Bad On Your Birthday'-he had just turned down a job offer from Ted Nugent.

I saw Joan Jett at warped tour and she kept winking at me...I was suddenly bisexual momentarily.....then she did the infamous tongue/finger move and I immediately turned beat red and my soul left my body at that point. Then I was brought back to reality real quick when my finger got smashed in between the barrier and thousands of rowdy punks so hard that my ring had to be cut off my bleeding finger. Best show ever though 😂

Iconic song covered by an Iconic Artist. Joan Jett became ‘the Queen of covers because she did so many of them, oh so very well. She even did a cover of the theme song from the Mary Tyler Moore Show, which I thoroughly enjoyed ‘who can turn the world on with her smile’😘

I thought she (or whomever arranges her covers) was exceptionally good at arranging other people's compositions. Exception being the cover of "Everyday People", a song whose definitive version already exists.
