Why KIA Engines Fail

In this video we tear down a Kia / Hyundai 1.6L Gamma engine to see what’s inside and how it works!
The Gamma series of engines is a 1.6L 4 cylinder all aluminum engine made by Kia and Hyundai for use in its small cars. This version is the gasoline direct injection version out of a 2013 Kia Forte. The engine failed due to a lack of lubrication, carbon and sludge buildup in the oil system.
The engine features a timing chain with variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust side. The water pump is powered by the serpentine belt and the cooling system is an open deck design. The valve cover, sparingly made of metal instead of plastic, houses the variable valve timing solenoid for the exhaust side as well as the gasoline direct injection high pressure fuel pump, which is powered by the exhaust camshaft.
Turbocharged models, such as in the Hyundai Veloster will use an integrated turbo charger in the exhaust manifold at the back of the engine. Overall the engine design is very simplistic in nature, and a lot more reliable than Hyundai / Kia’s 2.0L and 2.4L Theta II engines found in the Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe and Kia Optima and Sorento, of which you can find a video on the teardown here:

If you were conscientious enough to follow recommended maintenance intervals (or better), this video shows why you still would be doomed to failure ultimately based on the skimpy design and, in particular, when combined with the GDI carbon build up liability. So, yeah, even if you know what you are doing maintenance-wise with cars, you still would be a “typical” Kia owner for buying one of these in the first place.

Oh, never cleaned the valves on this direct injection engine. Still runs like a Swiss watch. The only item that needed replacement was the alternator. All other items were maintenance items. The trans is service every 30,000 miles and the cooling system flushed every two years. The front pads and rotors replaced at about every 30/35 thousand miles and the rears at 50 thousand.

Kia's are (mostly) reliable from my experience. I was taught a car is the 2nd biggest investment the average person makes and if you take care of the car, it takes care of you. That's the thing though, I was taught this information by the males in my family who work on cars and had jobs as parts managers in dealerships. Not a lot of younger people, like myself, are taught to treat our very expensive possessions with care, which is some of the reason why parts break

These 1.6 GDIs are usually very solid. Short trips and low quality oil and fuel will hurt them after 10 years though. I've seen them with around 700k miles on them without being opened. Synthetic oil and mostly highway trips (so at full operating temp) definitely helps to get that far! Edit: the plastic inserts in the cooling jacket are to evenly distribute heat and therefore thermal expansion between the top and bottom of the cylinder.

@@19jacobob93 Hyundai and Kia are very hit and miss coming out of the plant. I worked for Hyundai/Kia when we sold truck loads of Theta II cars, and some of them were blowing up before their first oil change. The 3.3 Sonatas and Azeras were even worse. I agree that certain engines IF built right and taken care of right will go a long time, but there comes a point where you see too many cars going through 3-4 engines on people for it to not be the fault of the manufacturer as well. That being said, my one and only Hyundai had 680k on the clock (km) on it's second engine and original trans (2nd clutch). It was a diesel H1 with the Mitsu based 4D motor though. Nothing electrical worked, but the drivetrain was solid, albeit slow an inefficient.

Very interesting seeing an engine dismantled. Great video. I have a Kia Sportage SUV 2017 2.0 litre diesel and have had no trouble at all with it. It's travelled 92,000 km and I'm selling it and buying another Kia Sportage 2.0 litre diesel, but this time, I'm getting the top of the range model. My wife and I love this car. I was attracted to the fact that it has a full-sized spare (a deal breaker for me) and that it comes with a 7 year warranty. I'm selling it with 2 years of the factory warranty still remaining. I'm very impressed with the tyres and brakes that comes with the Kia Sportage. I just put on 4 new tyres today, the first tyre change in 92,000 km! All my previous tyres on other vehicles only lasted 62,000 km! I've never had to replace the brake pads. The mechanic told me that there's still plenty of brake pads left. I've never had a vehicle in the past that's lasted >92,000 km without a brake pad change (my wife's a nervous driver so she's always on the brakes).

We had a Hyundai Accent and it got the same care as our 04 Corolla. The Corollas was off the charts better in ALL metrics. The 05 ACCENT had a horrible intermittent transmission bang and other issues. The dealer claimed to have changed the tranny under warranty but I know different now. I know this because my Chiropodist had a Tuscon which ate 2 litres of oil every 1 000 kms. He fought tooth and nail with Hyundai to warranty the engine. They did after a greater than one year battle. I know several people with serious issues with KIA and HYUNDAI. I will stick to Toyota.

The conrods are press fit in style so they don't need circlips to hold them like freefloating rods. My friend who's a kia/hyundai service tech says his shop is down to 1 and a half hours on subframe, engine and transmission drop on almost all their fwd/awd models because they do so many of them. Their motors just don't last even with oil changes at the correct interval and any extension to the interval just shortens their life even more. I've also been told by the same guy that the aftermarket oil filter scene for these engines isn't trustworthy and that is contributing to engine failure, even if you do the change yourself get filters from a dealer.

Thanks for the vid! I bought a used 2014 Soul 6MT w/ the 1.6l and about 100k on the clock a year ago and it burns a decent amount of oil. I switched to a higher viscosity (5W30 full syn) and use GDI intake cleaner at every oil change (done every 3000 mi). I check the oil level on this thing religiously! Anyways, it's nice to see the internals on the 1.6l - makes me feel better about having to do any diy work on it. It's hilariously slow but still a blast to drive w/ a 6 speed!

@@rolandbourbeau7478 It hasn't hurt anything! In the year since I wrote this, my car now burns about 1 quart of oil every ~250 miles. The rings are pretty much shot as are the cylinder walls (as evidenced by cylinder wall scoring and a decent amount of piston slap when the engine is cold.) One whole bottle of Lucas Engine Oil Stabilizer is added every oil change and that helps slow the oil burn rate a bit (1 quart oil loss after ~500-600 mi). If you have a Kia /Hyundai product with the Gamma/Theta/ Nu engine, do yourself a favor and get rid of it!

I'm amazed at the failure level reported in the US. Here in Australia they are generally considered a very reliable product. Our service requirements are 10,000km for the turbo petrol engines and 15,000km for the NA petrol and Diesel. Most of our KIA and Hyundai models are Korean made with some European produced. I have noticed there is a distinct quality difference with the US built Toyota Highlander or Kluger as it is called here compared to the Japanese made Rav 4 and wonder if the Hyundai models built in the US are using inferior quilt materials.

The fail rate in America is because they manufacture it themselves Kia and Hyundai and they have different engines fit for them in America. But Kia and Hyundai primary market is in asia and Europe . They get the cars from either European plant or Korean and the cars are some of the most reliable in the word. The problem is only in USA their plant and engine type is different from the rest of the world but it’s not with everyone most people in the states are satisfied with the brands.
