In my 2019 Kia sportage with the 2.4 litre engine, I noticed it was not balanced very well. It ran perfect with no check engine light or anything else but I could feel the engine through the car. My Toyota RAV4 is much smoother when idling.

You forgot the light bulb issues. 17 Elantra, I just had center brake light go out, no biggie I thought. Then a few days later the signal. I assume they will now all go out one by one. Has to do with the wiring and socket of the bulbs.

Thx for the tips, Scotty @scottykilmer! I have a 2005 Hyundai ACCENT 2 LC (European model) and the engine (G4EA model) runs so buttery smooth... It's true that I take care every year of it *especially last 3-4 years* - changing the oil regularly every 7000-10000 kilometers, never over rev , but having less electronics on it spared me of these kind of problems including short-circuiting electronic components. Some problems with the bushings of the suspension and suspension arms, but this is due to road conditions when I go to my mum, on damaged paved roads, so no manufacturer's fault (and I presume this is not a serious problem, as I inspect my car regularly, but just saying these are the only things that make me break the piggy bank and repair it). I have a 2013 Sonata hybrid. 80,000 miles. No issues. I do the periodic maintenance Hyundai suggests etc no problems at all

We had a 1987 Hyundai while I was in the military. We put 375,000 mile on it and Hyundai gave us $5000 towards another Hyundai if we would give them the car. Normal timing belt changes but we still had the original clutch when we gave it Hyundai. Yes, basic transportation but it served us well. All we did is follow the written maintenance schedule and really had no issues.

My mom has a 2014 Tuscon Limited with the 2.4L engine and about 117K miles. I know A LOT of those engines burn oil like mad and have been recalled. I think most of them were built in the Alabama plant. Hers was made in Korea. I did discover it started burning oil at like 113K, so I just made sure it was topped up. We had it serviced at 115K after noticing some smoke from the engine bay and found that the valve cover gasket went bad and so did the PCV valve. 2K later not a drop of oil was lost. The Koreans do a better job building them than we do apparently. 😕

This is pretty much it. Hyundais here in SEA do not at all have the same bad rep as Hyundais in the Americas. They're seen to be more reliable than American brands here, actually.

2k for a valve cover gasket and PCV valve?! Wow sorry but u got ripped by that place! A valve cover cost $25 or less and a PCV valve is $30 or less.. and it’s only 1 hour of labor. And u have to disconnect the PCV valve to remove the gasket anyways so both can be done simultaneously. That garage charged you for two separate jobs. So if the book says the PCV valve takes an hour, he charge you for an hour, and if the box says the valve gasket is two hours, he charged you for a total of 3-4 hours labor. When really, it was all done in one hour because you can’t do one without getting to the other part anyways.

I bought a 2013 manual transmission Elantra in 2013. No issues of any kind yet with the exception of replacing the steering coupler at 95K miles , under warranty, of course. The car now has just over 100K miles and still runs like it did on day one. Paint still in excellent condition. Only things I wish for is that it had a few more horse power, but then again , I knew what I was getting into when I bought it, so it's all good. I average 33-34 miles per gallon in city/hwy driving combined .

I have 255000 miles on my 2013 elantra. 1.8 manual. Never a problem other than typical wear items, eg, brakes, belts, plugs, etc.

I rented an '07 Elantra for a trip to Cali and the little beastie was great! On the way back (400 mile one way) I saw a trio of cars speed by me and I joined them. We traveled at 100mph for over 100 miles without incident. When I got back, I checked the gas usage and it was right at 33mpg, despite the high-speed transit in the middle. The car had plenty of power (surprised me as a retired mechanic) and hummed right along. That Elantra impressed the hell out of me. Question: How are the 2.5L GDI-MPI engines for reliability? I'm eyeing a Santa Cruz (but hate the 4 doors).

Bought an 05 Tucson (automatic transmission) new when it came out. Never had any problems with it other than routine maintenance and age related wear that you'd get on any car. Still runs like a clock, takes bumps really well, and just feels so much more solid than newer cars I've been in and around.

I run a 2010 i30 with a 2.0l na which is apparently pretty rare in Europe (it's the beta II). Thing has 143hp and is pretty fun to drive. 150k miles, no issues, and every day I step on it, rev it to red line, launch it, etc.

I bought my 2020 sonata 1.6t in January of 2020 and I absolutely love it. It had one recall for the trunk latch which was repaired. Other than that it’s been solid at 75,000 miles now. And have done nothing but recommend maintenance

I own a 2017 and 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with 60k and 25k miles respectively. To date no engine or transmission issues. Oil and filter are changed twice a year or minimum at 5k miles. All routine maintenance is performed at regular intervals. Hopefully my cars will last a long time. Love your videos. Keep it up. I Learn alot form you.

I drive 2020 Elantra preferred with sun & safety model (Canada). I bought it in October 2020 so its been 3 years. Until now, i faced three issues. First was that steering made rubbing noise (at 60k kms) while turning. Second was engine ticking noise started at around 70k kms due to which the agency installed new engine. So, both issues were fixed by the agency. The concern was why it happened even after i did all the oil changes and services on proper time and your video gave me clarification. The last issue was the front speakers blown even I dont play loud music or heavy bass. I am currently at 85k kms and its running ok.

Have a 2017 sonata limited engine started ticking and it starting using oil none of garage floor , no black smoke just consuming it . Jumped thru all Hyundai’s hoops got a new engine at no cost to me at 58,000 miles .. now have 81,000 miles , so far no problems..

hyundai KIA car is like box of chocolate. you dont know what you gonna get. some hyundai catch fire on highway, some hyundai start with USB cable. some hyundai lock up engine while driving causing accidents. some goes to 100,000 mile without problem. definition of unreliable car.

I bought 2009 Hyundai Sonata in may of 2010, I still have it now in october 2023 and this car is the best car I ever had. I only changed the brake pads a couple of time over the yeats and the starter switch on the steering wheel because it was not working right.

I owned a 2007 Hyundai Veracruz LTD that I recently sold in May of 2023. The vehicle had 140,000 miles when it was sold and never had any problems. The only maintenance that was done was oil , brakes and a tuneup at 100,000 miles. ‘Normal schedule maintenance’ It was the most reliable and most comfortable vehicle I ever owned.

Todays Kia 3.8 liter V6 uses an Atkinson Cycle at idle. This cycle runs gas over the intake valves preventing major carbon buildup.

One of my friends has a 2018 Sonata - engine seized at 68K miles. Lifetime warranty due to a lawsuit but still was in the shop for close a month and no word back on rental reimbursement. Ridiculous. Oh and it is uninsurable in several states due to high risk of being stolen.

A few observations. Most of the cars you mention are older models. Added to this how many of these cars are the north American built models. Seems it should be a video about how north America no longer makes decent cars. I would really like to see a comparison of Korean built Hyundai's to North American built Hyundai's as far as reliability.

I had a 2002 hyundai Sonata and now own a 2013 hyundai Elantra GT. Both were built in Korea. The 2002 Sonata had paint peeling on the car door handles and a window regulator that went out. The 2013 Elantra GT had the rear hatch latch go out. Other than that, it has been just regular maintenance. My 2002 I traded in with only 86,000 miles and my 2013 only has 50,000 miles right now.

I've owned three Hyundai's; Elantra, Santa Fe, and Sonata turbo. Never had trouble with them except for the turbo with the turbo thing. Some component kept coming loose and it would lose the turbo. It was fixed under warranty but I got rid of the car. The Santa Fe was great and we drove it over 12 years before unloading it. My son has the Elantra now, no issues. All cars can have problems. I had a lot more with our VW than with any Hyundai. We drive Honda now.

Hey Scotty, my sister bought a 1994 Accent new, put 120000 miles on it, then bought another one new in 2001. She sold me the old one for $750. My wife used it, and we kept up the maintenance. Then, in 2005, she went to Louisiana to help with hurricane Katrina relief crews. She was QC'ing the blue roofs, inspecting them and reported the results to FEMA. One day she was going to a location , and a tornano picked her & the car off of the road, spun it around and blew it into a full size Chevy pickup and T-boned it into midway between the front and rear doors. It had 150-something thousand miles and was still running great till this happened. It set off the driver side air bag, and my wife thought the car was on fire, so she jumped out and ran like you know what. The transmission would no longer go into reverse, so I had to get another car asap so she could still work and get paid. So I went to a few dealers and found a Saturn, 2003 model with 65000 miles, and had it certified by my mechanic, bought it for $3400 cash, and drove it that night to Louisiana. Drove the damaged one back to Dallas and gave it to my mechanic for parts as he has always been honest with me for 20 years. He got a lot of good parts from it that he actually installed, like new brakes & rotors & drums, radiator, fuel pump, tires, and I am glad I could help him out.

My wife has a 2016 Elantra. The electronic steering column was replaced under a recall. Other than that just brake pads and rotors. My 2010 Accent Blue ($10,800 OTD) is still running strong. Both cars have always received good maintenance.

I had a 2011 Sonata for 5 years. It was a great car for me with no out of the ordinary issues. I had it inspected by my mechanic before selling it. Person who bought it from me had it inspected by their mechanic. Both mechanics gave it a clean bill of health. The buyer let me know that the car continually gave them trouble, but didn’t really elaborate. I guess they felt I somehow did them wrong. All I know is I took care of it and it was a reliable and enjoyable car for the years I had it. It wasn’t perfect (I found the interior chrome to be cheap and would flake off - dealership replaced all of it under warranty), but I liked it. Not sure why it went downhill so fast for the next owner.

I have a 2013 Hyundai i30 with 130, 000 km on it. I always service it yearly at the local dealership. I am very happy with the car. It doesn't burn oil, the automatic transmission shifts smoothly and the only problem was the starter which i had rebuilt. No plans to sell the car.

Ive recently traded in my 2008 Sonata for a Honda H-RV, but not because of any issues, I just wanted something new. The Sonata was working fine, burned a little oil but I'd always tap it up at jeffy lube for free before it's due, the car had over 150,000 miles.

You always make very good and interesting videos. I really like watching your videos. Is it possible that the quality of Hyundai USA is worse than that of Europe? With us in Europe, you don't hear anything bad about Hyundai and they are considered reliable. I have owned my Hyundai Kona N for 1.5 years and have not yet had any problems. So far, I am very satisfied with Hyundai. This is my first Hyundai and otherwise I drive Subaru. When I see your videos about Hyundai, I'm starting to get worried. I was thinking the same. Here in Finland Hyundais have really good reputation and they are reliable cars with nice 5years/unlimited mileage warranty. Bought my first Hyundai this summer (Hyundai Bayon) and i love it. Watching all these engine failure videos and Kilmer bashing Hyundai/Kia makes me paranoid. 😂 Havent read much bad about Hyundais made in europe makes me feel if it really is more USA problem. 🤷‍♂️

@@a.t9910 You're right. I am very satisfied with my Hyundai. We also had no recalls like in the USA. With us, the Italian vehicles are better known than unreliable. I can't say if that's the case, because I've never had one. The Bayon is a beautiful model, I like it too.

@@a.t9910 Hyundai is an important national policy project for the South Korean government, so if it is a country other than the United States where there is almost no prosecution, it can be hidden with a peaceful recall. The Korean government also spends money and puts pressure on the press, so the public doesn't know much about it in the news. The long-term guarantee imitated Toyota, but this is different from Toyota. Toyota promises a long-term guarantee from its track record and trust, Hyundai has a complete backup by the Korean government, and the first priority is to increase the share rate around the world, so the damage such as repair costs and recalls is not a burden as a company, so it claims a long-term guarantee only to sell a large number of cars. There is no country where the government intervenes in private companies as much as South Korea, so information weak people in Europe and the United States will be deceived. I bought a 2021 Kona SEL new in Houston in March 2021. So far so good. No recalls yet. The engine is so quiet that I once got out and the door wouldn’t lock because I had left the engine running. Mine was manufactured in South Korea in December 2020 according to the door panel. It has the 6 speed transmission and the naturally aspirated engine.

Hyundais are not crap. I am not sure about your american imports, but in australia our imports seem to be fine. I purchased my GD2 2016 I30 Active in August 2016. This car has not missed a beat. In 7 years and 50 000km (31 000miles) Has gone through one battery, and 2 sets of front tyres (due to myself not getting wheel alignment done when i got front tyres changed, and also not rotating once per year) still, i cant complain. Apart from that, the car is perfect. Paint is perfect, as it has alway been garaged and sits in a underground car park at work. Every single thing on the car works perfectly. Engine runs perfectly (is serviced every 12 months, or 15 000km) I still have a original tyre on the right hand rear, which is still perfectly road legal (although when i got the fronts changed a week ago, they recommeneded replacing this tyre in near future, due to the age of it). Hyundai do make great cars.

@ankajaksmietanka8248 very true. But time wise, the car is 7 years old. It has done remarkably well. Most of those kms are stop/start smaller trips. (About 6km/day...i live 5mins from my workplace) i still can not fault the car. Still has its original rear tyre from the factory, as i said above. Still has legal tread, but is due for replacement, purely due to the age. I will get done soon. So the original tyre without being rotated from the rear, has lasted 52 000km. Paint is also perfect, from being garaged, and being parked in a underground car park at work. They are not bad cars. I feel maybe the american ones are worse?

I have a 2013 Genesis Coupe with the 2.0 turbo engine. Bone stock, no mods what so ever. It's rarely driven and only have 60k miles on it after 10 years. The only issue I had was for years the AC not being cold when the car isn't moving at high speed, then eventually it just stopped being cold completely. Left it as is, didn't bother getting it fix. Recently the front bumper warning sensor went haywire after a rainy day, but went away on its own couple days later. Other than that I never had any major issues.

What is interesting is that I have a slightly modified 2016 Veloster turbo and no issues (knock on wood) I'm the second owner and change oil every 3k and have installed an oil catch can. I also notice that mine doesn't burn oil like others do. At every oil change I measure the used and it's only slightly lower, put in 4.75L and about 4.6 comes out and that's most likely because of the oil filter and the engine. Sometimes eco mode will bug out if used with sport putting it in a sort of limp mode but hasn't happened since I had my car tuned.

I have had a 2010 Santa Fe with the V6. This has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever had. 200000 km on it now. I have towed a 3000lb trailer for about 20000 of those km. Just have had normal things go like a wheel brg, brakes and a ball joint. The body is still perfect and I live in Canada where the is lots of salt.

I had a 2015 genisus. It started with a ticking noise. They replaced fuel lines initially. Over 5 months they rebuilt engine....ended up replacing it. After that it had to be towed back for more repairs. Replaced some more expensive parts. I sold it before warranty ran out. It was a wonderful ride tho. I enjoyed it before it started falling apart. Hyundia treated me well by replacing so many parts to fix it without me throwing a hissy fit.

Hi Scotty, I have had a 2009 Sonata, a 2011 Sonata, a 2015 Kia Sorento and currently have a 2023 Tucson. My lady has a 2009 Kia Sportage. With the exception of the air conditioning compressor failing in the Sportage all have been excellent trouble free cars. We are happy with them and don’t get me started on Fords!

My daughter had a 2012 Hydundai Elantra that had to have it's motor replaced at 43,000. Also had to have work done to the steering system that has a 2 dollar part that requires lots of dash and steering parts to be removed from car to replace when the car was 5 years old. I felt that hyundai is getting close to having a good car but needs to FOCUS on the drive train and critical systems design and systems integration.

My personal experiences with Hyundai isn’t bad. A friends daughter uses me as her personal mechanic. I’ve been servicing her 08 sonata for 6 years now. It has 160k and I just recently did its second timing belt and water pump. She brings it to me for an oil change every 5K I use mobile one full synthetic high mileage. The only thing I’ve had to replace out of necessity and not age is a steering wheel switch pack to fix her cruise control. It’s been great for her. A close friend has over 200K on her 13 Elantra but is meticulously conscious about car maintenance. About a year ago she FaceTimed me because she attempted to replace a fuel filter lol! I asked her why and she said because the manufacturer recommended it and she didn’t want to pay 1200$ for a 30$ part lol. I walked her through the process after she pulled out the fuel pump! Good for her. I think except for a few bad apples they are ok cars if you take care of them. My 2 cents 🤷🏻

My mom just traded her 2017 Santa Fe sport because it burned 2 Quarts every 1.5k miles. Only had 80k miles. It was ridiculous. She got a 2019 rav 4 with 17k miles. I’m happy she listened to me and got a Toyota.

We bought a 2017 Ioniq SEL new, We've put about 70K on it so far but I'd say 50K+ in the 1st 3 years as it was our primary driver (we bought an ID.4, mid 2021). Other than Tires and regular maintenance we have had zero issues. Ideally I hope to keep the car for a long time, we get oil changes every 7500 or twice a year at this point.

we own a 2000 Hyundai H-1 / Starex (Which was never sold in the US) with 158,659 hard miles on it. Daily use with heavy loads and had no major issues except for those parts that needed to be changed due to age (alternator, radiator, and basic consumables like tires, brakes, fluids). My sister also owns a 2016 Accent for 3 years now and have 0 issues so far. Preventive maintenance is key for a car to last long. I also think the engine problems associated with the brand are isolated in the US because I've seen many Hyundai/Kia cars here in our country with no issues even with high mileage.

My friend bought a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe and has already had 2 major recalls for his model. One was an oil supply line to the turbocharger that would break and spew oil over the engine and the other was for a fuel line that would break and spew fuel over the engine. He wanted to buy a 2022 Toyota Highlander but the dealers in his area were demanding a $5,000 up charge over the MSRP. He wishes that he would have bought the Highlander.

My 2001 Elantra ran like a top but was totaled in a bad accident 4 years later. My 2006 v6 Sonata I drove for 14 years, 240k miles still ran like new when I sold it.

I recently bought a 2021 Sonata hybrid as I needed something that was better on gas than my 2004 Ford expedition. I noticed that the year, make or model was not mentioned in this video which I find comforting. No recalls for this car. Its a beautiful car with awesome features that is saving me around $400 a month in gas. It will be serviced and treated well so I guess it remains to be seen if its will or will not remain a reliable car.

I had a 2015 Kia Soul Manual. It was recalled for the rod bearing issue/Knock Sensor update. They also increased the engine warranty to 125K. Then the Kia Boys put out their videos on how to steal cars like mine. Kia sent me a "Club" for my steering wheel but would not fix the issue. I was impressed on how Kia handled the bearing issue but they lost me as a customer when they would not fix the key issue. I sold the car and took $3K less than I could have, because of how hard they car is to get insured.

my father has a hyundai accent 1.3L 2001 and we rebuilt the engine 310.685 miles but the problem was caused by (I think it was a bad thermostat stuck closed in summer and it was fixable but we decided to rebuild the whole engine because it burned some oil) it still going very strong . If I'm correct that model shared the same engine with a mitsubishi.

Have a 2012 Hyundai Sonota GLS. The engine blew up at 84K, but since the recall, the metal shavings in cylinders caused misfires, so they put a new engine in. My motor is still loud to this day even though it is basically new with only 50K miles.

I think it's a strategy to improve the quality instead of selling a lot. Well, there was no way it would work right away, so there were many problems after that. That's where Genesis was born. A safe luxury car with only an image. People who are familiar with the history of cars don't buy it lol

My son has a 2017 Tucson with the 2.2 litre diesel engine, he's just completed a six month family road trip, 35,000 klm, all around Australia towing a 23ft caravan, absolutely no mechanical issues with the car in all that trip, and none before, the Tucson now has a total of around 140,000klms At now six year old the car has "never missed a beat", so they cant all be junk Scotty.

Purchased my Sorento 1 1-2 ago and have already had to replace Engine, brakes and rotors twice and now part of the transmission is bad. Kia doesn’t seem to care or want to help me. Think twice before you purchase a Kia vehicle. They will break and break on you and you will be too far upside down to unload it.

I own a 2022 Tucson hybrid and the only problem I had was Hyundai changed the fluid used for the hybrid and the car was telling me I needed more fluid but the dealer just flushed all the old fluid out and gave it a software update all for free just to be safe and ever since besides regular maintenance I have had zero problems

I have a 2017 sonata limited after about 3 years of driving it started consuming oil excessively.. I had to jump thru hoops and take in my car multiple times for oil consumption tests .. I had 58,000 miles on it .. THANKFULLY they replaced my engine for free, no charge to me and I’ve not had any problems since thankfully.. plan to keep it and drive it till the wheels fall off !

Is great information, I personally think Hyundai is just a cheaper choice for people who doesn’t drive that much and they constantly check their cars, I personally have a 2019 Elantra, and all I had changed is stuff that goes bad over time like the thermostat and the brakes, other than that the car is great, I love the mpg I get about 36 driving normally. If you don’t want to worry about keeping an eye on your vehicle just get a Toyota, I had one myself and those are a whole different thing.

I own a 2013 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 sedan with 210,000 km under its belt. I've only had to change out the usual fluids like engine oil, transmission, diff, brake, and the like. Surprisingly, it's been trouble-free. I've been thinking about getting a new ride, but this one just refuses to give me any reason. Before the Hyundai, I had a 2010 Toyota Avalon. It gave me all sorts of headaches, from AC gas leaks to a stubborn smart key that wouldn't cooperate. Eventually had to part ways with it at just 70,000 km.
