I think that the key in the survival between Sam & Tyrion, and Varys & Littlefinger, is how they used their knowledge. Neither Sam or Tyrion used their knowledge to seize power, they only aimed to be advisors to those with power, not to be in power. Varys was more advisor type, than seize power type, but he switched his support for whom he thought should be in power too often, and got caught out. Littlefinger was so focused on using his knowledge to create chaos with everyone, to gain personal power, that he neglected making the support for his own position solid, that when he called for the knights of the Vale to escort him back to the Eyrie, at his trial, they refused to accept his authority.

Great observation. To piggyback off that, Sam and Tyrion were both underdogs in powerful families so they didn’t feel the need to be in power. They already had proximity to power. Whereas Littlefinger and Varys were both starting from the bottom. Varys was fighting for the people at the bottom and Littlefinger was fighting for himself. Varys really stands out as the only one who didn’t care about the people in power. And it shows that it doesn’t pay to care for the little people.
