Hey! I'm kinda late to this (I actually fell sick with the flu 2 weeks ago, so I had to postpone my video), but in light of AOA's bullying scandal (as well as Hyunjoo from April's recent allegations), I wanted to do a deep dive into the issue of bullying and members not getting along in KPOP groups! I hope you guys enjoy!

It's not just a regular job because bullying doesn't always happen. It's a job where there is a group of people (managers etc) judging, bashing, catergorizing, comparing, and controlling you 24/7. Cant eat what you want unless youre favored, cant go out any time you want, cant contact family or real friends, must strive to be better than the members of your group etc. Then when on camera you have to play like everything is great and the group are all good friends. It's an exhausting and stressful lifestyle basically

lemonaide bey it’s the same concept creating a business, you’re going into debt, and it’s only generating income if you generate profit. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, I guarantee you that the work is shitty and you’re pretty much stressed 24/7, even in your sleep since clients call any time. Plenty of people fail to generate any profit. Of course you can walk out any time, but your bound by your investors and responsibility towards employees. No one has it easy in this world, the reality is if you’re unwilling to take the risk, don’t choose the job. Everyone has something shitty to their lives and especially in Asia, no one wants to spend extra time taking care of the wellbeing of others.

There are two ways when ppl fall in love (love as lovers or just as very close friends or wtv) 1st when you choose the person you are gonna love and 2ndly the forced love which is not actually forced, it's just you are used to being with some particular set of ppl for instance you were suddenly born in a random family and have some ppl who u call mom dad or siblings. Since u were born in this family, you gotta stay with them for years( and you know you can't just move out) you have no other choice but to love and protect them. You live with these ppl for so long that at some point you can't imagine even your life without them.you'll be sad if they are gone. I think that's what happens with kpop trainees too. They have no other choice but to work with each other and after spending some time they eventually ends up being friends or much more. Yeah there are times when things just don't work anymore and we actually have seen many kpop celebrities leaving their groups for ex woojin, he got thrown out for not getting alone and sh*t. Hope this makes sense.

Ive heard many idols talk about ‘we dont meet up outside schedules’ ‘i dont even have his phone number’, even stuff like getting questions wrong in those games about how well you know your members. And the qns be simple stuff like fav colour, bday, Moms name. gotta watch out for this stuff. Fair enough a lot of dont know our own friends birthdays. Y’all about to be mad, but I’m saying this as an Orbit, but Vivi has the weakest vocals in the group. Sure, she deserves way more than a single line, but let’s be realistic, they’re not going to put weaker members with a large amount of lines. The reverse of this is that Vivi will never improve if she’s not given the chance to have more vocal lines. It’s ultimately up to the producers to match them with lines each girl can handle, and they’re kind of dropping the ball on that.

Here's the thing guys, idols don't have to be friends. They DO have to tolerate each other at a bare minimum to be in a group, and also be marketable. So, right, the idol industry is NOT to make friends first. But, I then remember a memorable quote from SNSD. They promised themselves before debut: "One member's popularity means the whole group's popularity. Let's not be jealous, but support each other." I think this willingness to support from behind while working on their own career at the same time is how all of SNSD eventually found their own success. That takes a WHOLE lot of discipline. And it's not for everyone.

I believe that the main reason the public is so invested is that it makes us crave that kind of idealistic relationship as well. K-pop THRIVES on self-insert fantasy, whether you consciously partake on it or not, and sometimes that self-projection tends to bleed into the fan's perception of the group dynamics. And I'm not naive, I know companies know that as well, so they cater to that want, which is also a product they are selling us. Because let's be honest, and this is just an example.... whose dinner date with friends would be fun for an outsider to see if it wasn't scripted to be funny anyway? Yes i agree, it's theit company's fault to ask them to fake smile, fake friendship, fake their personnality too on screen with script too and put them on tv show or fans like more personnality than musics too lol, fans can love them, their personnality, their friendship and can have the feeling to know their idols, their group, their friendship BUT it's an illusion! Fans don't know them but just because they saw one aspect of their personnality on screen, they think they know them, their company use that, to create fandom using idol's personnality even if it's fake, showing their fake personnality, fake friendship can grow attention, sympathy of fans and grow sales LOL So businessmans abuse of that
@christa0chellew
@christa0chellew 3 жыл бұрын
@@newjeansfan238 I don't think it's just the businessmen fault. I think it's also about us as consumers. We won't be sold something we don't ask for, even if it's not directly. What I mean is that we as spectators enjoy such content a lot, we make posts about it, compliment them on their littlest interaction and we want constant interaction with them in that area of their lives. Hell, even western influencers/musicians/actors play into that because it gives them attention. We as consumers should be conscious of what we ask of them as well. The same way companies have implemented mental health in the last few years as a priority because of public demand, we also should check what we ask of them. Acting as friends for cameras on variety shows and vlogs is part of an idols job. They could be friends off camera, or they couldn't. And I think about 90% of idols are not 'crackheads', 'goobers', 'close like siblings'. It's just not possible. It's all for show. And nothing wrong with enjoying it as long as you don't let it cloud your judgement when it comes to supporting idols. If an issue does come to light, people should be careful showing support to toxic people or idols who made life difficult for others. There are tons of examples of groups not getting along and having awkward chemistry. And that's fine. Especially in a cut throat society like SK, or a slightly more laid back one like maybe in UK and USA, musical groups don't get along. And that's fine. They don't have to be friends. It's just work.

I feel like groups that follow this tend not to be successful or have members leave then disband. The atmosphere becomes stifling and usually an idols physical health is quite reflective of this. It can be quite healthy to most groups to not live together as they are already together 24/7 and even sharing rooms in the dorms I think is probably too much and they barely get any privacy. At least get them separate rooms for each member. Mamamoo, for example, have lived in separate apartments for quite some time now and they became much closer after, just because you are good friends doesn't mean you want to live together and it will work. No kpop group friendships are perfect. Even I get annoyed with my friends once in a while even though I love them. And I chose them as friends. Members are chosen by the company and members don’t have a say in who will be in it. Especially in such a competitive place, even after debut(if some members are more famous than others). In big groups with many members , there would be friend groups within then groups itself. Some members would be obviously closer to you than others . The you need to stop being a fan of Kpop. The entire industry is based on what People consider being a bully. The age formality would be considered bullying in some cultures. If the leader is not being harsh on the others. Then the company would be get a talking to them for being to easy on them and it's their fault if a member does something wrong. The entire industry is based on negative reinforcement. complement are extremely rare. You doing a great job is expected. Their are company cultures and group dynamics that are different. leaders are Put in a position of being critical of the other members. Then they get blamed for being a bully. @@faervas1234 You have a very twisted way of looking at what a leader is supposed to do and be. A leader should NOT bully, be harsh, use negative reinforcement etc. And what is this victim blaming? "Then they get blamed for being a bully." Wtf, if they are bullying the members then they are a bully, there's no excuse? There's several people in the industry who DO NOT bully as a leader, Namjoon from BTS and Solar from Mamamoo, you can encourage, use the right kind of reinforcement and be supportive as a leader and be successful, these two groups have shown that. You seem yourself to be in that head space of a bully, I hope you change your perspective on what a leader is and what actual leaders in kpop are, because a good leader is NOT a fucking bully.

@@aspannas I not saying it's a good thing. How much do you understand about South Korea culture? I know there had been efforts to change but It is very common to be called in and to be scolded by your boss for an hour or more. South Korea is known for what we would call bullying. One of the issue is if you are suddenly the oldest in group you become the leader regardless if you are up to the task or not. In another group you are treated like a baby or child because you are suddenly the Youngest in another group. There is a high rate of suicide among young people in South Korea extremely high for women from the ages 22 to 30. You seem to think I am advocating for this style of leadership I am not. It is the culture that is South Korea. Everyone who is pointing the fingers don't take into account that Mina may be right about being bullied but she is using the lens from outside of South Korea. Who don't understand it is systematic in the culture and to blame one person as the problem, when it is a wider social issue. Way of crayon pop talks about the physical abuse she received when she makes mistakes. A BBC documentary about Nine Muses shows how they members were treated on video. Even getting slapped. I was so common the CEO didn't even think it would be a problem to slap one of the members in front of the camera. In the Pilot episode of Anthony Bourdain he was in koreatown talking to the guy who start the food truck trend. A second generation restaurant owner spoke on how a customer had a complaint because he change a flower arrangement. The customer called the restaurant owner father who is retired. The restaurant owner had to go to the family home and get scolded for 3 hours about changing a flower arrangement. After work you are expected to have a drinks with your team where the your supervisor, goes over everything you did wrong. If the supervisor miss something the person above them will scold them for missing your mistake. It is the supervisor job to correct you on everything minor issue.

@@faervas1234 Being the oldest doesn't make you the leader in all groups, Namjoon in BTS is an example of that, he's in the middle of their ages of 7 members and he's not the only leader in the group, Hoseok also takes part of being the leader when it comes to other things such as performance and choreography. And BTS always talk about how they handle it and how they support each other because they know it's hard for Namjoon sometimes to be the leader. They also have a really good relationship with their CEO, they even make fun of him all the time and aren't scared to go against what the company says sometimes, Seokjin is an example of that. I do know a lot about Korean culture and how work relationships are, but that doesn't mean it's that case for every single instance in the industry, there are good people and good relationships between companies and their groups. There's Sunmi who has known JYP for like 15+ years and even after leaving the company, is still really close and even collaborated just recently. Of course the whole industry and basically the korean culture needs to change if it's gonna be able to stop these groups being mistreated, controlled and not cared for by their companies but that doesn't mean there's no good people and good relationships in kpop.

They don’t have to be close because at the end of the day, they are doing a job. Most people who have jobs know they don’t get along with everyone at their work place and that’s ok. However, to be professional you should at the very least be respectful to your coworkers. Going out of your way to bully or antagonize coworkers is wrong. In kpop groups it makes it easier to work if you are close, and it creates special chemistry in performances and easier to appear on variety show etc. but it’s not a necessity.

Honestly, I trust groups that say they fight, argue, misunderstand each other but then apologize and still get along and dont hold grudges. They're human, they will fight because they have different opinions, they will misunderstand each other because they all have different personalities... MAMAMOO is a great example. Moonbyul and Solar talks about the Cereal Fight to the point it became a joke in the fandom Hwasa said "Destiny" is a song that reminds her of the members, because, there were moments they hated each other, misunderstood each other but all 4 of them were destined to be together and the chorus part of the song represents their strong bonds (Idol Radio 2019) Solar cried when she rememberes in Vlive 2017 she scolded Wheein and got really mad, but never had a chance to properly apologize Solar cried too in 2019 Life Bar while talking about how she rarely complimented the members in the past, because she didn't know what to do as a leader, so she rarely complimented members, specially Hwasa, and when TWIT got #1 she couldn't really say a word because she had SO MUCH to say, so she hugged Hwasa and cried, Hwasa cried with her and revealed "She didn't say anything, but I understood it all" and in 2019 Idol Radio, Hwasa opened up to Solar saying a lot of things which made both of them cry. And in 2017 Vlive, Moonbyul said "I get this question a lot ""Are you all really close?"" I don't know about other groups, but I'm sure about this one thing, we are really close" In 2019 knowing bros, mamamoo were asked about Hwasa rising popularity and Solar said "Some people might think that it's just her doing well, but it impact us in a good way because we're mamamoo" so she reassured fans that even though Hwasa is the rising star getting a lot of CF/Wins and such, they're all ONE And they always have these heartwarming moments where they say a few words to each other, you can see how close they are. Wheein and Hwasa are best friends since middle school so it's obvious that they're the most close among them all and that Solar and Moonbyul are closest because the year gap between them is not that much. but MAMAMOO gets along really well, they're always contacting each other off cam too. Not only MAMAMOO, but BTS, GOT7 too have these moments where they fight on cam and off cam, but this kind of things are NORMAL and it only helps their friendship to grow stronger than ever

Another thing that makes Mamamoo's friendship seem real is the fact that the rest of the group participated in Hwasa's Maria mv. In the commentary, Hwasa said they are there because it's their support that keeps Hwasa's character from the suffering showcased in the mv. It might have been just another tactic from the company, but it was one of those situations in which they didn't need to be together and still were, making it all look more genuine.

@@felipe21994 OBVIOUSLY in a group of nine young women, it's impossible to expect everyone to be best friends. I've been cynical about Kpop for years thanks to all the scandals plus the toxic environments noted in this very video. That said, I have yet to see any real evidence that any Twice girls genuinely hate each other (and I do try to look beyond the façade), and certain members are known to be very close. Jeongyeon flat-out admitted that she did not even _speak_ to Mina during Mina's trainee period and was harsh on her at the start of Sixteen to the point Mina cried. Later, Jeongyeon came to like Mina and Mina, known to be an introvert even before her 2019 anxiety-induced hiatus, has repaid that by being Jeongyeon's rock after JY _also_ had to take a break due to anxiety following her neck injury and Koreans slammed her for putting on weight. Mina didn't have to hold Jeongyeon's hand during one the first activities JY took part in after returning. Jihyo was friends with Jeongyeon during their trainee years and was the other member to _directly_ comfort JY during that show. Again, even with the cameras on, she didn't have to do that. Meanwhile, I've seen some people accuse Nayeon of being a bully, which she evidently was during Sixteen, but that was a high-stakes elimination show. It doesn't absolve her but it gives context. She has a longstanding habit of visiting certain members during solo shoots and is known to be very close to Momo. On the flip side, Dahyun rarely if ever appears with Nayeon offstage and DH apparently still holds a grudge for Nayeon's behavior in Sixteen. So, assuming they're all best friends is ludicrous, but they can at least get along, which is more than I can say for the guys in BTS, who I've heard genuinely hate each other. Or some of the others girl-groups in this video.

Interestingly, I feel like the groups with better atmosphere/relationships are under smaller companies (especially companies that started off almost broke). Because this way, many of the members started off as friends instead of trainees in the same “debut lineup” competing to stay and be able to debut. Naming a few: BTS from BigHit, mamamoo from RBW, seventeen from pledis (though I’ve always had issues with pledis)

to add to this, smaller companies cant afford to have a large number of trainees (more trainees: more money spent on them), meaning that the competition is way less strict. if theres 10 trainees, and after a few months its decided that 8 specific members will debut, and THEN they continue training together, the situation will be much more relaxed personally im thinking of ateez. as far as it is known there was only one other trainee that could have potentially debuted. they knew for months that they were preparing together for their debut, instead of competing for it. its not clear what happened with the 9th trainee, but it is said that since he only had a month of training it was clear from the beginning he wouldnt debut. the rest of the members knew they were in the final lineup for a long time before he came to the company, or so it is said so yeah basically... small company -> few trainees -> less competition sorry for going on a tangent !!

BTS was in a similar situation when they first debuted (except Tae's late showcase situation, tbh that could've been an issue but BTS handled it well amongst themselves and clearly that didn't leave any negative impact) and while seventeen did have other trainees competing also, their original goal was to get 17 members (which they didn't end up reaching) so I'm guessing that eased a lot of tension between trainees.

And it's so sad because not only such system allow fans to put unrealistic expectations for their idols, literally every aspect of their lives become public property. Their friendship, their feelings for other people, their looks, weight, are free for the public to judge 24/7. They're also given a lot of social media freedom. They can do vlives whenever they want to, they can also record with staff(especially lately the staff has become more comfortable to show their face on camera) they can do literally anything chaotic, and the company is totally okay with it. Comebacks are consistent, the company is always searching for a way to make all members shine equally. Example, they let their Chinese member participate in a survival show back at China to gain more confidence,and explore her own qualities. She released a solo track recently(the 2nd member in dc to do so). So hopefully as long as the company keeps this up, the group members wont have hard feelings on each other regarding things. Its much easier to be close to colleagues in a healthy working environment. I hope more companies can take this example

I meant, let's all look at their pov: when you're trainee you and the other members were rivals. One of you might be kicked out and you're constantly compared to, during weekly evaluation you're made to compete again like it's impossible not feeling threatened, in some scenario your friends got kicked out bc the other members were chosen and you'd feel bitter about it too like why her and not your friends? Then after debut, the line distribution were divided according to the atmosphere (how well you suit the line) and popularity (most popular member usually get the catchiest line) and you'd wonder again why you who sang better got no line, and then of course, screentime. Not to mention, individual jobs. Why did they send this member to this show, even if it's not me there's Miss X who's better. Also, when that member ranked in brand reputation wayyy higher than you, got more ads, got tv gigs, solo projects etc. That's only between group, they still have to compete with other groups. Sometimes, it's not just inferiority complex and insecurities, but other factors too. Ofc, this is business. In the end, only those who sells will be promoted. I understand that popular member might get a solo before main vocalist, bc they have stronger fanbase to support them. No companies in their right mind will promote non selling artist. Even fans of all members can't really support this less popular member solo project. For example a group of 5 girls, one of them got solo debut, she's the less popular member but was the main vocalist, OT5 fans would buy her album but let's be real, they'd probably buy 1 album only and her OT1 fans were too small in quantity. On the other hand, if the most popular member debut, her OT1 fans might bought 20+ copies per person and she's got like 10 times OT1 fans than the aforementioned main vocalist. That's just how life is.

Idol groups are all about image, they might show an innocent, sweet or cute image in public but privately they're not. So don't believe everything we see they post on their group's social media accounts i.e twitter, instagram or FB page. Also I don't believe that everyone is close to each other, sure they can all be friends but for sure there are members that they are more closer to than others. Remember idols are here to sell a fantasy and as a fan we must know how to separate the fantasy from reality. We don't know who they really are in and especially off camera. We only know what the company chooses to let us know.

I think it’s amazing how SNSD (outside the Jessica fiasco) has remained so close. I do feel like Tiffany is their glue though and getting back together seems like it revolves around her returning to SK, and them visiting her in LA. Honestly having a glue member is most important to group dynamics
@icy6005

Yup, this is the comment I have been looking for. It must be hard for the whole group to be close with everyone, there always tendency that some people are closer in 1 to 1 settings with each other (like Tiff and Tae or Tiff and Soo, or Hyo and Seo or Jess and Yoona, yes I think Yoona is still close to Jessica even until now but she won't be able to punlicly acknowledge it as she is still under SM). I also agree with you that Tiffany is most likely the glue of their group and she will initiate all the gatherings and parties. I also still think that Jessica is close with those people she were close with in SNSD, like Yoona or Sunny or Yuri, just that all of them are happen to be still under SM.

I think some of them are really close (some of them have known each other for over 5 years) but their are 23 of them and most of the time they are in their subunits. Despite what most of the fandom wants to believe, they aren't all friends, and that's okay. They still work well together. The classmates analogy is probably the most accurate. I think the Dreamies are genuinely close, though that's likely because they grew up together and, with the exception of Mark, none of them went to school and developed relationships with people their age who weren't related to NCT or SM.

And trying to round up 7+ people who live in separate places for a schedule seems hard

Very true .. I Stan blackpink and I have seen that they are a lot different than many other groups. Like the members have their own places to stay and not be pressured to be in one house but I have seen many fans saying that they are not close so they like staying alone.. I don't think that's the case... living conditions shouldn't be mixed with friendship... and they don't usually do same solo works which I don't really mind.. because all of them are allowed to choose about what they want and is possible for them.. I don't see them constantly being under the camera and having their privacy taken away.. I think groups under big companies live and have the probability to have good friendship is much higher .

I've been listening to k-pop over 15 years an was introduced through Lee Hyori. I started to catch on with the weird behavior through variety shows and kept digging deeper into what was really going on. The things some of these idols go through is complete abuse...and with the netizens continuing to attack these people, they are tearing them down even more. There's a reason so many idols commit suicide and I've seen some of my favorite idols pass away when they deserved a long beautiful life. We need to continue exposing the bad people behind the scenes and try to help improve the industry because I know there are so many of us who really care about them!

Another thing I want to point out, is that if a member has be hired to do their first solo CF, acting role in a TV series, appearance in a variety show, invited to be in a fashion show or photoshoot, etc, it is usually expected that they share their 1st paycheck with their other group members. Now I don't know if this is mandatory for EVERY group and company but I remember someone's video on idol-group member relationship mention this (I think it was Grazy Grace). But you can imagine how the idol that got the gig in the 1st place might feel frustrated that they have share their paycheck. They might have feelings like "I was the one that worked hard, why do I have to share what I earned to others that did nothing." Also remember that most kpop groups are in HUGE DEBT to their companies, so it is likely that they are not getting paid at all or lower than minimum wages.

Most of the times it's senior groups that get along well and very comfortable because they now know and understand each other. I'm not saying junior groups cannot get along well or even better than other senior groups, but usually it's the time where they are getting to know each other. Obviously other junior groups already get along well because they trained together before debut and created bonds already so that's good.

Most comments are talking about how people are delirious on thinking that most groups are friends or that a group with 7 or members are faking it but i think its possible not only that no one is perfect people argue and have disagreements all the time doesn't mean they aren't friends. Plus alot of idols have trained together for years im sure if they aren't friends they tolerate eachother. There is a difference between what people would consider eachother as a co worker, friend or family and that goes for idol groups. What they show on tv could be fake or only look fake to the viewer because u dont know them personally. Damn a whole ass paragraph i need a thesis statement 😂😂
@defiantaichi
@defiantaichi 3 жыл бұрын
So you agree with those statements then? I think the main argument is just fans read too much into small things. And the K-pop industry takes advantage of that. To the point that they shut down disagreements within groups without properly addressing them.

Their company asks them to fake their friendship, that's the reality, the reality: we don't know them, don't know their friendship and they are not friend, they are first coworkers who have to get along to just work together! But it's their company who decide what image idols have to comform, to fake friendship because of the image and popularity! They have to act like a "perfect friendship group", idols don't have freedom to decide, they have to fake it because korean idols have to be perfect, have perfect image, perfect friendship that are fake! That's the hypocrisy of the kpop industry
@Noelciaaa
@Noelciaaa 3 жыл бұрын
Also when companies decide on who to debut they don't just consider looks and talents but if the trainee has good personality. People with personalities that easily stir up conflicts or create divides are usually not chosen to prevent this. So it might be more realistic to keep relative peace in a group as opposed to classroom where there's all kinds of people.

I was legit thinking the same thing. At least we know for sure that Dream is pretty close, sadly also due to the reason that they didn't get a chance to make any friends apart from their own members due to joining and debuting so young. 😕 Hopefully the members of the two other groups are comfortable with each other since they all trained together for 3-4 years and then have been active for 4 years making it around 8 years since they have been working and living together. We can only just hope though. But somehow SM groups have always stood the test of time and come out strong in the end. SuJu, Shinee, Snsd are a living testament to that.

@@cameliacazacu417 I agree with you on both these parts honestly, 127 on shows seem like they are made to be all hyped up and chaotic, which they are but they are more of an introverted or quite and calm lot on the norm which we can see in their vlives and off stage interactions. Johnny has such a fatherly aura that shows his support for each member but also keeps them on their toes by teasing them. WayV just seems chaotic in general. 😂 And it has 3 members which are seem like are the sort of people who would become friends with anyone, which are Ten Lucas and Kun ( Kun would be more like the person to care for anyone in an instant ). We can see that specially with Lucas because of the way the Super M hyungs have grown so close to him in the span of an year. Also it seems WayV spends a lot of time doing things as a group on their own off camera as well which warms my heart. I just hope they are just happy and comfortable with each other even if they aren't best friends. Also it's not a hidden fact that each and every NCT aren't friends with each other. Awsaz wouldn't exist otherwise, since they have openly accepted the fact that certain members are close while the others aren't.
