I don't know if anyone's pointed this out yet, but when Empire was being filmed, Ford hadn't committed to doing RotJ yet, which is why they had the character frozen in carbonite in the first place. If Ford hadn't returned, then Lando would have been the new Han, and I'm guessing that's why they had him wearing Han's clothes.

My theory is that of course he is wearing Han's clothes. He left Cloud City with nothing and Han isn't needing them right now. No point going out to buy new clothes when there are some already on the ship.

And despite what the movies show, particularly the more recent ones, hyperspace travel takes time. Lando boarded the Falcon with just the clothes on his back. Guy without wardrobe, wardrobe without guy, clothes fit guy decently well -> guy wears clothes that are available. And that is without considering that stopping to buy new clothes would be difficult with the imperial entanglements, the friend with a severed hand, and the other friend who got picked up by a bounty hunter. There were more important things to worry about than how Han would feel about Han me downs. (I'm sorry, it was staring me in the face. I'll go sit in the corner as my punishment... double time for that one)

I want to sincerely apologize to the several hundred people who have commented the same idea over and over: that Lando is just borrowing some of Han's clothes because he didn't pack any on his way out from Cloud City. CLEARLY this is an acceptable and perfectly logical answer. Occam's Razor and whatnot. That being said, I was going for a more interesting and fun possibility that would maybe make the scene a bit cooler to watch. I'm sorry for trying to introduce what I thought was a cool idea to the community. I'll go freeze myself in carbonite now.

I always thought that Lando just took Han's clothes because the ones he was wearing were kinda formal, and Han wasn't wearing that outfit on Episode V, so I assumed they were clean. And since they were like old buddies, I thought he was like just changing into something more casual while saying that Han wouldn't mind, while also not caring if he would mind, because of the kind of friendship they seemed to have, like old bros. But I like your second theory a lot. I just hope they don't take it out of canon with the new young Han Solo movie (possibly trilogy). Would be cool if they officially make it canon somehow, in the Han Solo movie, or episode 8, or something.

Well that is what makes the most sense, Lando didn't have time to pack a bag, The falcon is literally han's home (where all his clothes are) and i doubt going to a clothing store while you are on the run from the empire is really that much of an option given the event that play out. I.e. Lando isn't taking any undue liberties, its basic necessity. Lando has no other clothes, Han is frozen in Carbonite. Its not really all that crazy given the circumstances. The idea that it's in any way controversial given the scenario on the other hand is crazy.

The behind-the-scenes reason is that the figure in the Millennium Falcon's cockpit is painted like Han Solo, so for the purposes of continuity Lando had to match the special effects miniature. I saw this in a featurette, and they gave the figure black face for ROTJ, which is all you can do given that you have to shove a paint brush into those tiny windows.

Lando's vest and shirt are the same cut and style as the Rebel troopers from A New Hope. The shirt is the same colour as Han's, but the style isn't. To me, it makes more sense that he grabbed a uniform from someone in that great big rebel fleet that they are leaving from.

"I wonder if Han has any clean underwear in here?" It's clear in the movie that Han and Lando have some history outside of Han winning the Falcon. I haven't watched the movie in the last 20 minutes but I remember some banter where Han mentions Lando is now on the "Up & Up" and "responsible," or something like that. My impression is that they were both smugglers at some point and ran in the same circles... Perhaps even from the same planet... Considering Lando then takes off to save Han from the grips of one the most notorious gangsters in the galaxy, a slightly dangerous task to say the least, it's safe to say that the relationship between Han and Lando is more than just acquaintances. Even if Lando is pissed at the Empire for "Changing the agreement..." Why not take a cozy desk job somewhere processing payroll for the Rebels instead of putting his ass on the line to save Han? BECAUSE... That would be boring! But also, Lando is responsible for Han being where he is... Although he didn't know Vader was going to put Han in the carbonite. (Remember, Han was the test subject.) Vader only mentioned some dude named Skywalker who Lando didn't know or give a shit about. Lando wearing the same type of clothing as Han CEMENTS the idea that there is more to their relationship than just meeting somewhere at sometime in the past for a poker game. It only made sense to me that they would tend to wear the same sort of garb... Lando is back to his old swashbuckling adventures with Han! I'm not sure where the idea came from that only a few hours passed between escaping Bespin City and then venturing off to save Han... Also, If I had to make a hasty retreat from the warm confines of my home without packing a bag, I think it wouldn't be too hard to purchase clothes in the styles I want elsewhere.

Lando put on Han's clothes because all of his cool capes were back on cloud city in the hands of the empire. He had nothing left. The empire probably froze his bank accounts and assets as well. He had no choice but to wear Han's clothes. Also, does the millennium falcon have a shower?

YES YES YES I have been trying to get people to notice this! Leia's rebel troops on the blockade runner wore them, and Lando ended up in the REBEL fleet. Buy a white shirt with a collar (UNLIKE HAN'S) and there you go... THIS is truly the easiest most obvious answer.

Also if you think it took them only a matter of hours to meet up with the Rebel fleet, board a medical freighter, have Lukes surgery to attach a robot hand and work out the details and plan a mission to track down Han, you must have some serious time management problems IRL.

My guess is that yes this outfit is some sort of regular Corelian uniform. It could be possible that the ship has a closet of these things from the beginning and Han, not being exactly a fashion guy, was like "nice, free clothes!" and use it as regular outfit. So when Lando arrives on board and would like to change clothes, he knows where the locker is and takes a new uniform.

The explanation for this has never seemed unusual to me or bothered me. Lando fled Cloud City without anything to wear except his blue and black bespin outfit, which would have been in very rough shape after the escape. The Falcon would have been full of Han's clothes and Lando, since he's now devoted himself to rescuing Han, might as well make use of what's on hand. Plus, he clearly has Chewie's approval to wear the stuff and having Chewie's approval is the same as having Han's approval. Maybe it was actually Chewie who suggested to Lando that he wear Han's stuff - that would make a lot of sense.

EXACTLY. It's just a style, like the rebels at the beginning of New Hope, black vests are worn a lot. Han never wore a shirt like that, wore a sloppy shirt and vest in ANH, chef-like shirt with nice long sleeve jacket in TESB. He never wore a button up shirt with a big collar with a vest. It's just clothes that they gathered for Lando among the rebel fleet (who wear a lot of vests!) or even if he did grab a vest out of the closet, it's not a shirt anything like Han wore. No one accuses Mon Monthma of raiding Princess Leia's wardrobe, or Luke/Obi Wan/Uncle Owen wearing clothes of a similar style. It's just a casual look that Lando is wearing, actually more casual than the dressy shirt and nice jacket Han wore in TESB.

It always bugged me that Lando was wearing Han's clothes at the end of Empire. He had nice threads himself, so why did he need his buddy's clothing?

No, it didn't. Han never wore a shirt like that, and lots of Rebels wear black vests. Lando's shirt is a button up one with a big collar...none of Han's had ANY collar at all, either were just open or folded over at the top like a chef's. Google the pics and you'll see that they aren't similar except in a very general way, just like many people on Tatooine dress in a similar way; they aren't raiding Luke's wardrobe! And Mon Mothma is not wearing Leia's clothes! Just a "Spacer/smuggler" type casual style. Wish they had made it a blue shirt, like the rebels at the beginning of ANH which would make sense since he was docked with the rebel fleet when he changed. Lots of black vests in the Star Wars universe...they are not all Han's!

in Han's Eu story line He joined The Corilain military before the Empire existed and was in his 20's during it's rise. After the forced assimilation of his home system into the Galactic Empire. their last stand was made almost entirely by the Corilain Jedi order (think the jedi form of protestants. their jedi could marry but only to other Jedi without special permission of their separate High council) Han was in the outer rim on assignment with his Corilain unit when it all went down and came back only after it was all said and done. He took the easy way out and after a week of cooling his heels in the brig he accepted a commission into the Imperial Navy becoming an Officer candidate. Only after the encounter in which he meets Chewy does he flip shyt take the wookie and escape becoming an outlaw and a Spacer just to survive.

Makes sense that it would be clothes left in the falcon after being won from lando. As seen in the force awakens after getting onto the falcon which was stolen by multiple people from Han, and looking for medical supplies, Finn finds the training droid from a new hope, meaning that things were left behind when the falcon was stolen and just never gotten rid of.

You hit the nail on the head with the no packing scenario. Lando has nothing, literally nothing to his name at this point. It makes perfect since for him to borrow Han's clothes for the immediate voyage to find him. No time to waste to take him to the ships tailor.

The rebel fleet was far outside the galactic rim, we can see this easily in the final shot. So it took them a hell of a lot more than a couple hours to get there from Bespin. Plus in the scene you refer to, Luke has already been treated and his new hand installed. A procedure I imagine takes more than a few hours to diagnose, conduct and test. And they have already had time to consult and come up with a detailed plan to rescue Han. So Lando was very likely a few days at the very least in his outfit from cloud city and possibly longer. So he needed a change of clothes. Likely any civilian clothes in Landos size and species among the members the rebel fleet were needed for covert ops missions, so it would have been much easier for Lando to have just borrowed from Han's closet on the Falcon than to go around the fleet asking if they have any clothes he could use since he only had the one outfit. No big mystery. No conspiracy or theories needed. Just Occam's razor and taking a few seconds to think it through.

another theory is that those clothes Lando is wearing are just that common among spacers that he acquired a change of clothes on the medical frigate. there's no time reference in the scenes so they might have been at the frigate for days, weeks, even months before he and chewie headed out. who's to say he didn't purchase those clothes from the ships store

Honestly, Corelian military clothing or traditional Captain vest and shirt, the outfit is badass and I think that's the main reason why they actually showed Lando with that aswell, symbolising he's as good of a pilot or captain as Han.

My theory, and one of far more sense: they're standard Rebel Alliance pieces of wardrobe: not uniforms, but off-duty or undercover civilian clothes. Han & Chewbacca were with the RA from the end of Episode IV until the Imperial attack in Hoth, it's directly stated that it wasn't a direct move from the former to the latter (the Opening Scroll and Han's comment about "the Bounty Hunter we ran into at Ord Mandel...") means Han wouldn't have much off-time to run out to the closest "Banana Old Republic" for new threads. On the other end, I don't think Lando & Chewy sped out within hours. Luke didn't just have a bionic hand sized up, as he was also battered-up after his duel with Pappy Vader. Luke talks about "(meeting you) at the rendezvous point on Tatooine", which means a good amount of time working out Han's rescue from Jabba. Also, Chewbacca spent a good deal of the Third Act choking a Playa, and Lando had to have regained the trust of all involved. Shit, I've turned into Randal...

in the game where solo wins the falcon, lando was out of money and offered any ship on his lot as his wager. solo accepted and won and said he wanted the falcon. the falcon was landos personal ship and he had parked it in the same lot as the ships he offered solo. when solo won he took the falcon. at first lando said no because the falcon was not part of the stock in the lot, it was just parked there for the game. but since lando did not make specifics he was forced to part with the falcon. so the second theory makes the most sence.

Perhaps the vest is just something standardized that was adopted by many starship captains/crew? The Alliance troopers on the Tantive 4 also wore black vests. It's a great utility garment that could hold extra energy cells for blaster, small tools, etc. As such he could have gotten the vest and generic shirt from the Alliance, having literally escaped with the clothes on his back.
