Kinda surprised he didn't talk about the Ghost Child, given that she is arguably the best monster in the game at making the game scary even when you are surrounded by friends. There's nothing quite like the first time you listen to your friend freak the fuck out about something only they can hear or see for 5 minutes just for their head to suddenly explode right in front of you...followed shortly after by the sound of deep breathing behind you. The Ghost suceeds at making the one she hunts feel isolated even when in a group or in the supposed safety of the ship

You're completely right, she's a very interesting monster to face and her premise is really unique. Unfortunately I hardly encountered her during my playtime and didn't want this video to push further than 30 minutes so, for the sake of brevity, excluded her from the video. I also would have had to borrow even more footage for her section alone and I didn't want to do that.

@larubric that's fair, can't really make an informed section on her if the subject doesn't even bother to show up in the first place. Normally it's a blessing to not see her pop up much, if at all but when one is TRYING to get her, the low spawn rate is just a kick in the rear.

I've had her spawn once. I first saw her inside and, knowing what she does and how she works, felt immediate dread. It was when I was approaching the ship that I noticed I couldn't really hear anything and turned around to see her skipping towards me. I practically broke down in a panic. Ghost girl is terrifying

@@larubric if you try to go to rend, dine and titan you have best chances for a ghost girl, I'm pretty sure it's the highest chance on dine but all 3 have them somewhat often.

Another thing about the bracken special forces is how quiet they are. During their hunt mode they are completely silent, and actively avoid your sightline. Their attack is also the quietest in the entire game. Unless you’re right next to the victim, you often just won’t hear it happen, giving the initial impression that they just disappeared.

Me and my friend were playing, he aggrod a bracken and I sacrificed myself for him. He didn't realize this, and so went back to look for me. We had a mod installed that takes voice clips from us and have monsters use them. So when he gets back to where he last saw me, he finds splashes of blood on the floor and walls followed by the sound of my voice. A minor mod adding so much to this to elevate it to something extremely funny and terrifying.

Doesn't the bracken work differently depending on player sanity? The bracken tends to pathfind to areas not within your LoS when its target is at high sanity. If its target has low enough sanity, it often tries to come from in front. Sanity also affects the ghost girl's targeting and the "most paranoid employee" note

another clever horror aspect is that theres really no jumpscares, you just die. personaly i think jumpscares are a cheap way to make a game "scary".

They do exist in Lethal Company; the Bracken abruptly snapping your neck from out of sight, the Coil Head killing one of you when you weren't looking, and the little girl appearing from nowhere to relieve you of your head. They're not cutscenes or anything, it's a product of the gameplay itself, but the monsters can certainly startle you in an identical way. You're right that this isn't all of WHY they're feared - jumpscares are ultimately the climactic conclusion - and some creators seem to believe they are the be-all and end-all of the horror experience.

​@@larubricZeekerss doesn't really include cutscene jumpscares at all, which always makes the jumpscares that *_do_* happen much more terrifying, because they're real, and not scripted. Which is really cool.

The thing i love about the game is the designs of the monsters, they look like something a child would draw to prove that they saw a monster, the eyeless dog and the bracken are the best examples and i am saying that in the best way, zeekers deserves this

I think it's because Zeekers is originally a Roblox developer. The models all look like Roblox models to me. It's charming seeing his roots through the playdough looking monsters lol

Correction about the Bracken If you spot it while on your own, it is guaranteed to retreat if there is enough space between you two, he will only attack outright if you spot him and keep staring at him Unfortunately, several people noticing him can trigger him faster, if everyone looks at him at the same time that is Bracken is extremely deadly due to how difficult he can be to manage, even for experienced teams Lets say you spot a Bracken trying to sneak up on you, and it tries to break away, however, it happens to back away into the same room you saw your friend in That friend is very likely to die, since the bugger is already tilted by you spotting him, your mate might just cross the line by accident Not only that, but it seems like he gets angry faster when several people stare at him He also isn't exactly picky once angered, he can and will kill several people if they are very close together when he charges

Brackens are relatively easy to deal with even when angered as you can just run, not look and it will run back after a while, although i definitely have noticed they seem to get more agitaded the more often they get noticed, as i got one to go after me immediately even though i looked at it from way across a hallway, but still enough distance to stand still and not look at it and it couldn't get me, everyone else was dead when i was chilling inside

My bad on that, I was pretty sure that it runs faster than you Still, doesn't change the fact that they are scary as hell, all it takes is one moment of not paying attention and you are a man down, yes, I do know that you can die very quickly in general, but you get my point On it's own, absolutely manageable, especially if you are aware of it Then again, they are seldom the only ones after you, aren't they?

@@wolfwalker4585 yeah if you run in a straight line you're slightly faster, but the bracken can take turns with no speedloss unlike thumpers, jesters and hoarding bugs so running around in a circle doesn't work as you also lose speed when doing a tight turn, probably most noticeable on stairs.

Not only is Lethal Company really good, but ALL of Zeekerss's games are really good. He's mastered the soundtrack, the gameplay, the balance between Comedy and horror, the AI of the monsters, the designs of the monsters, the story, the hidden lore, the worldbuilding, *_everything._* if you haven't already, I highly recommend his other games, especially It Steals and The Upturned.

I really think the mix of humor and horror is what makes this game so fantastic. You're not overwhelmed with just horror, horror, horror & gore. There are moments in between or during for your brain to relax. Which can make the then horror lead to more fear than it would if it was only horror, or just a bigger laugh.... that is a fantastic experience. It's the best of both experiences.

I think the thing that makes this game so scary isn't just the monsters or environment, but the voice feature and how well it is implemented. It isn't just that voices fade realistically, but also that, the instant someone dies, they go silent. Having a conversation with someone that suddenly cuts off is scary enough. Calling out on walkie talkies and having no one answer back after multiple attempts is terrifying. Having that happen when you're pinned by a coil head is the stuff of nightmares.

Also when someone dies while talking to you on a walkie talkie, it cuts to static. So just imagine your friend suddenly screams, and then it just cuts to static.

@@blockeontheleafeon i wouldnt call a hard minecraft world “scary”, its more challenging than anything. Even enemies like the warden are nothing if you have the right equipment. Even if you choose to play as if ur in a horror game, it still doesnt change the fact that minecraft, by itself, isnt scary.

Other highlights include: Eyeless dogs because having to cut off communication is terrifying. The ghost girl being invisible to everyone but you and slowly building up tension as she taunts you is horrifying, especially from the other players pov. The Jester for having arguably the best aound design in the game with that panic inducing music and the increasingly fast stomps when it awakens. And recently the masked and the nutcracker were added, who are both scary and funny in their own regards. The mask is just an amazing troll but also manages to be pretty creepy both the first time a player becomes one or when one is randomly encountered acts just deceivingly enough like a player to briefly fool you. And then there's the nutcracker, who manages to perfectly combine "oh god oh fuck it's mad and shooting at me" with "lmao funny music and ragdolls"

15:08 hate to be the “umm actually 🤓” guy but the bracken choosing to retreat or attack has nothing to do with group size, the bracken will attack if you stare at it to long or if you back it into a corner, but will retreat if you quickly glance at it.

Thank you for this insight! Not at all being that guy, this is good to know. He seems more likely to kill you if you're alone but this may be down to the fact it's easier for him to sneak up on you and I conflated these two. My neck snapping experience is now more canonically accurate.

He actually atacks MORE in groups since more people are looking his way which means more people notice him in inoportune times when he's trying to make his getaway

you missed something about the coil head, if you get too far away from it, ie successfuly manage to juke it, it'll start taking another route to you. It subverts how the player becomes comfortable by manipulating it to move it into safe places by occasionally moving unpredictably, making any interaction with them that much more horrific. meaning that the best way to get around the coilhead is to make sure it's close to you at all times, which is extremely tense and leaves you vulnerable. It's one of the things I love about lethal company, how playing the game on a higher level and knowing the tricks of the monsters means playing as stressfully as possible. The other thing is how all the monsters have that element of unpredictability, all of the spookies have some sort of foil, you can glance at a bracken and it'll go away, but sometimes it won't.

i truly believe that good horror is made through a combination of understanding and valuing great art, and also just being a sadistic little freak who ADORES finding out the best way to not only scare someone, but draw out all of the paranoia, anxiety and dread leading up to a moment of terror. THAT is what zeekerss horror is. his other games, the upturned and it steals are JUST as good as this and are also shining examples of this kind of horror. a good horror artist is a master of torture

My absolute favorite moment in the upturned is walking into the saloon. The drop in your stomach when you walk in and all the monsters just stop what they're doing and just LOOK at you. The piano music that was coming from inside is gone, just silence. Then you can just walk out and they get just carry on

It really boils down to the fact that there is no cheap loud audio effect. There is nothing creepier than turning the corner to see a Bracken staring at you. When there is a loud noise, like with the thumper, there is urgency behind the jumpscare as you know that the monster is rushing toward you with the intent to kill. With these tactics, the player can actually react to the scare in game, rather than simply jump out of their seat and move on.

The bracken has gotten me from behind ONCE within 70 hours of playing. But that one time he did, he snapped my neck in a mere 18 seconds of entering the compound. And I had entered at around 8:30am, which is very early. He absolutely had it out for me that round.

The idea I got of the Bracken, both from what I remember of the entry, and how it acts, was it being a hyper-intelligent monster, that prefers to toy with its victims rather than kill them outright, or at least scout them out to make sure it’s not going for something it can’t take. Either way, the feeling that this thing is smarter, faster, stronger, and more durable than you, and yet just decides to not immediately kill you just because it thinks it’d be better to fuck with you, is terrifying.

Even the bracken, despite being a cliche "makes people disappear the moment you look away" monster, is unique because it's entirely unscripted. It is amazing how well its AI was designed. And it's amazing how much you miss of it too. Sure we all know how amazing it is when we turn and then our friend is just... Gone. But what we don't often realize is that the bracken doesn't just slowly approach you when you don't look, it full on stalks you. If you watch your friend after dying to one, you'll often see it straight up just staring at them, super close to them, and choosing not to kill them. I think this stalking behavior may be why it's so good at evaporating people. The AI is constantly nearby ready to attack, so when it decides it's time for someone to die, someone will die. And because it's programmed to avoid your line of sight, that death will most likely happen when you're not looking.

Playing the game solo is terrifying because it's very quiet. No one on the radio, no person next to you talking. Its just the enviroment, your own footsteps, and whatever the hell is trying to kill you.

to the testimate on how genius zeekers is, the new monsters added the new update (in my opinion) are very much as scary if not more then some the current in just a couple weeks. i love how terrifying the masked are with their silent approach and slow infection of the entire crew and how nutcracker marches in looming threat as it blasts away your teammate that was standing at the wrong place at the wrong time. i cant wait to see what else the mind of the dev can come up with, in all of its terrifying and hilarious glory :)

One of the scariest experiences i've had with the game didn't occur from the monsters, it was the sheer loneliness I felt I was teleported into the facility to grab some items before we left the moon, but the thing is, I didn't know where the exit was, it was just hallway, after hallway, after hallway, with no lights, just pure darkness, I wandered for idk, 10 minutes or something, knowing, that every moment i was in there, meant one less moment to get to the ship, feeling like at every turn, I could be attacked, but... nothing, no enemies to speak of. It was pure luck that i found a part i recognised, meaning i could leave the facility, though i had literal seconds to spare when i got to the ship Turns out, I was going in one BIG circle the whole time, my teammates were probably screaming at me from the ship, wondering what sort of idiot they sent in

Correction about the bracken: He basically has a rage bar that increases If someone looks at him. If several people look at him at once the bar rises quicker which ist why groups of people get attacked (by his rage mode not talking about Just getting your neck snapped from behind) more often than single players. If just one person looks at him, it is pretty much impossible to trigger his attack mode. Another thing that makes the bracken scary is that he can travel through vents, meaning that you could See him walk around the corner into a dead end and once you go after him he's disappeared.

Finding out the guy who made it steals also made lethal company made me realize why i am in lvoe with the bracken and the ghost girls AI. They are quite literally perfectly coded just like legs and the gang i love them so much.

The thing I like about the bracken is a quick glance is his counter, meaning him being in the facility isn’t an essential run ender like the jester, but him being there is also a constant threat. He’s also a terrible pairing with the coil head due to them both having mechanics based on being looked at, plus making you turn around more often increases your paranoia and thus chance to be haunted

The coil head is in some ways scarier then peanut in scp cb but in scp sl it was made a bit better. Like the Sound of it moving. But also we have to remember that in scp cb and sl there where other scp's, like it is in Lethal Company.

I get what you mean, but the peanut in scp sl is significantly less scarier because its scp sl. Nobody is taking the game seriously, and a squad of mtf soldiers can shred through him extremely quickly if he's not careful.

Like I say in the final segment, multiplayer experiences tend to be rather goofy and to try to be scary in a sincere way when players are being the monsters themselves will just never work. SCP CB, while I wasn't a major fan of it (it seems to cater specifically to those who are into SCP and I frankly don't care about it) has the isolation inherent to a single player game that makes encountering peanut significantly scarier. Even from SCP CB, however, I find the Coil Head's design to be more menacing and worthy of my fear. @@nicomom9534

Something about the xenomorph in Alien: Isolation... It does actually attack other NPC, in fact, during my playthough of it, I used them to lure it away, so there... Also, the fact that it's always there is, well, basically stalking.

Lethal company is the type of game that is scary af but funny af at the same time. Playing with the homies ranging from 4-7 people just makes it juicy and hella funny lol. Yet at first before I bought this game I was pretty intimidated by it knowing I don’t play horror games because of how scared I get easily but this game is just gold. I can get scared but at the same time laugh so hard that I can’t breathe due to the stupid deaths or the rag doll physics just be having me rolling lol

my brain works on a 50/50 chance of either immediately forgetting everything i know about evading or killing a particular monster to run away screaming some random bullshit to anyone nearby in a panic.. to "you found a bracken? i dont believe you, im gonna go find it!!" and proceed to giggle to myself while flashing a laser pointer in the dark near where i've cornered a bracken, meanwhile my friends have already perished by various means and are then forced to watch me fuck around with a bracken for way too long before they start yelling at me in steam dms telling me that i need to stop "fucking around to find out" as if i don't have a concerning 50+ hours on this game and then the second i'm solo and i'm in constant dread of brackens. i have like 5 simultaneous heart attacks when i suddenly see one..

One of the best things in the game imo is how your voice gets cut off immediately when you die, I've had a more than a few moments casually chatting with a friend as we're moving through the facility together only for him to stop responding in the middle of our conversation, turn around and he's just gone and you don't know if it's because he fell down a hole or Mr flower man got to him without you noticing Those moments of just sudden silence are scarier than any jumps scare or elaborate chace scene or cinematic

One thing even scarier about the monsters, mainly the bracken and coil-head, is that they are actively messing with you. The Braken could just run straight up to you and kill you, coil-heads CHOOSE to not move when you're looking at them, they still can move, you can see them running around in patrol mode if it hasn't spotted anyone yet

The game's massive use of sight and sound are what get me. The way blind dogs force you into silence but Baboon hawks make you shout at them to keep them away. The Braken isn't just a creature you have to look at to keep away, it's one you have to peek at because if you watch it for too long it will go in for the kill. Dynamic use of sight and sound are so great

Another Great part of the game are the radios. Instead of them being always connected to you like phasmophobia so you always have connections to people, lethal company makes them items. This is so you can lose them/not have them and also run out of battery. Another great part of the game is that you cant tell when people die. You walk around the facility, shouting their name, with no response, fearing for the worst. The leave early vote has been cast, making you think something terrible has happened. Are there 2 dogs in the ship? Who knows!

So one time me and some friends were playing experimentation flooded and one of our (there were three of us total) crewmates drowned right outside the ship. I was talking to my friend and telling him to be careful, he was getting the body out of the water, and I got eaten by an eyeless dog that just popped up out of the water. Most horrifying moment of my life

I absolutely adore the strange mix of monsters in this game. We have proper spec-evo xenofiction (loot bugs, bunker spiders), we've got classic horror monsters (the slime), the we've got modern horror monsters (coilhead, bracken, the mask). Its a fun diversity!!!

until then, we might as well enjoy the game as we always did. having mods and an active community always helps keeping a game alive, even if the playerbase has probably moved on to greener, bloodier pastures on the fields of democracy or in the mines below. the game will only die when it's completely forgotten

I had a 10 minute panic session where I had been hunted by the Bracken shortly after having inversed teleported into a facility. At the start, I had been chatting with the three randoms before I had teleported in, so I was in high spirits. Around 3 minutes in, trying to find my way out, I entered a dead end and turned around only to see those white eyes on the other side of a door I had closed barely seconds ago. Instantly, the darkness became oppressive, as I tried to find my way out of the facility, constantly checking behind me to figure out where the Bracken was. What made it all the worse, was that the other guys were doing perfectly fine, deeper in the facility and getting loot, while I was being tailed by this stalking hunter, waiting for me to make one slip up and not check behind me. I even found two full inventories worth of crap, that if I could get back to the ship, I'd probably be damn good to rest up and grab later.. But I had to make it out in the first place. The bracken wasn't what got me. But a thumper that when I finally found my way out of the dead end hellscape I was in.. That set off all manner of panic, and eventually lead to me getting torn apart by it. I've also had a case where I was making a jump, landed on a beam, and turned around due to hearing the movements of a bunker spider in the room behind me. After watching that area for a moment, satisfied it wouldn;t come out and attack me, I turned back around, screamed and hit my s key, falling off the beam I was standing on. Bracken. Just staring at me before fuckin off as I fell to my death. This had happened a day or two after the 10 minute hunt, so I wasn't going to experience that level of unadulterated fear. I don't normally play horror games either, too much of a bitch for it. And yet, it's this comedy horror of a game that dug me in, got me to pay that really cheap fee (Seriously, just around 10 bucks CAD? It's absolutely worth it, even if you get at most a few hours into it). I honestly look at it as how the Scary Movie franchise exists. It's horror, but it's a comedy first. It knows it's goofy, it knows its silly. It doesn't care, you're here for a good time, but when it swaps to horror, it's somehow the scariest shit ever. The proximity chat also adds to it. Because with the walkie talkies and just in general chatting, it can really sell the 'oh shit' moments. Chatting with someone about their day, only to hear the beginning of a scream, turning around.. Maybe you're not even fast enough to see the bracken taking their corpse, so all you see is whatever dropped loot they had, a flashlight.. Or you *are* fast enough, seeing those piercing white eyes in the darkness, and maybe a twitching limb carried away into the darkness, highlighting the trail of blood. Even the later moons have their own unique horrors, with the Ghost Girl haunting one person in particular. You can still escape her, if you're good enough at juking her, but the thing that makes her scary is that sure, everyone knows about her now.. But at the start? people thought you were just saying shit, and you can't scan her either. You're on a unique time limit now. And then there's the Jester. There's two ways of dealing with it. GTFO while it's winding. Or, waiting to smack it the moment it pops, as it will pop the head back in. However, it's faster than coilhead at max speed, and it will pathfind to any still inside human. A streamer I hang with had a moment where out of the darkness, he could hear it *sprinting* in his direction, and he had maybe two frames to realize what was happening before he was dead. He didn't hear the wind up, he didn't hear anyone else calling out about it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe SCP 173 and the weeping angels were designed at about the same time. I think it's somewhat possible that 173 was an original idea

You’re right. SCP 173 (supposedly) was a concept before the Weeping Angels aired in the same year, although Steven Moffat also likely had that idea long ago as he had been inspired by it from an experience in a graveyard. There is no evidence either of them inspired or plagiarised the other, just two guys had a similar idea that came to fruition around the same time. I start with ‘the Weeping Angel’ bit during Coilhead’s section simply because it’s very well-known and segued well into talking about Peanut.

7:53 the weeping angel doesn't actually kill their prey, not usually anyway. They send them back in time and make them life until they die, by the time they get back to the present, they would be really old. They only killed in the Matt smith episode when they were trying to escape a ship that was going to explode or something

I haven't played Lethal Company yet, but my friends and I do plan on getting it soon. As someone that's now finally starting to take hold in horror instead of running away immediately, seeing something that looks so natural as to garner so many videos that say "this turns normal people into 5 star voice actors" and agreeing with them in the end is asinine, yet awesome. When making comparisons to other multiplayer horror games, while I haven't played most of them, the one that I have played out of them is Phasmophobia, and as much as I enjoy the game, your criticisms are warranted. I'm lucky to be able to learn as quickly as I do and enjoy learning new things, but like you said, if someone else already knows what they're doing, why bother? The issue with Phasmophobia's depth is that it's locked behind extensive knowledge and difficulty, where playing even Professional starts to get boring because you don't have to start testing for most ghosts until Nightmare or even Insanity, and it becomes a monotonous cycle unless you force yourself into these higher stakes. The depth is all there, just kinda gatekept by those willing to put in the time and effort to learn, and finding someone to help can be frustrating, considering I had to learn a majority of it on my own at first. From what I've seen, Lethal Company brings its depth to the table and pulls all the stops from the get go, from procedurally generated bunkers to each moon having its own selection of joyous monsters to encounter. Going to the same or similar moons can yield drastically different expeditions everytime, and you don't need to have extensive skill and knowledge to be able to experience this depth, just the willpower to keep pushing on even when you know you're knocking on death's door. A game that makes me think of both of these is Forewarned, though I don't think it's a game that can hold itself to the same standard as Lethal Company has here. It holds the same looting as Lethal Company, alongside a procedurally generated map and traps unique to each map type, however it shares the research and investigation of Phasmophobia on correctly identifying the Mejai being your crucial key to your most valuable treasure; now having to juggle investigation, exploration, looting, and survival. Can it get monotonous, yeah, but when thinking about it, it seems like some weird hybrid baby of the two. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, I think I just wanted to ramble I suppose. Each game has their strengths and weaknesses, but it's cool to see Lethal Company take what would normally be a multiplayer horror game's weaknesses and turn them into their strengths as well

Well I just played it for the first time tonight and despite always missing the jumps between the platforms in the bunkers I had a blast, even had my sibling solo kill a spider while I ran like a coward (in my defense they left me for dead in the dark and I stumbled on a landmine because of it)

actually, while not in line-of-sight scp 173 actually makes scraping noises when moving outside your view such as on the other side of doors. you can also hear this in scp secret lab which is multiplayer and lets you be the scps so you can have to dodge him while avoiding others.

That's true, you can hear a scraping noise, but I personally didn't find it to be as affecting as Coil Head. The pattering of feet implies something more animate, something with greater movement capability that you can't truly witness until you're already dead. 173 in CB had me nervous, sure, but Coil Head summons an active dread to the pit of my stomach that makes it more noteworthy.

One of the most scary things in lethal company is when you are in multiplayer but alone, you know there are other people in the session and you can't see them, it add a horrific amount of uncertainty when you hear footsteps or other sounds

i agree the first encounters with the Alien can be frustrating but once you get the flamethrower that dynamic with the alien gets so much more engaging because you're playing this mix of hide and seek until it finds you and then it becomes an intense standoff of keepaway as it learns to fear the fire and tries to exploit any openings. Stops being "it finds you and you die or it doesn't" after that. Most people ragequit before then though. Its sad. Good video by the way.
