I am certainly not a sawyer. However, a couple things I read recently in a respected woodworking magazine. 1. Sticker your freshly cut lumber only with kiln dried stickers. This helps prevent mold from forming at the contact points with both being green. 2. Sticker over your supports. Any swag in the lumber overhanging the supports or sag between supports will be transmitted up through the stack and it may dry that way. Maybe a better way or saying it is, keep entire lumber stack level and stickered over the supports. You have a beautiful place to work. A cool dip in the river while working on a hot summer day would be nice too.

12:40 "Taking pride in your work, even in the seemingly meaningless." I made the conscious decision in December of 2019 to keep my tools clean and my tool box organized. It adds a little extra time in putting away, but makes-up for by having tools ready and easy to find when needed. Also, since I have minimal shop space, staying organized in important.
@marcusjay81033 жыл бұрын
Also, once you do the original clean up/tidy, it makes maintaining that standard super easy. While the original task may take you a few hours/days to get complete, taking care of it and keeping it that way is literally a couple minutes/hour (depending on what it is) out of your day. I find once something is how you want it to be it kind of adds to the motivation of keeping it up, goes for anything in life really. Real world items, health, fitness, finances etc. Although it may appear overwhelming to begin with, no better time to start than now and as you get on top of the 'issue' it's so rewarding seeing your effort pay off and creates a routine you can follow as often as needs doing to keep the 'thing/stuff' as you want it. Gives a great sense of pride in what you are doing too 👌

Greetings from the North Coast, Michigan's UP. An idea to make your milling more efficient. Make a tablesaw jig to cut shims for keeping your kerf open. Something like a 12" long shim tapering from 3/8" to 1/8", or whatever dimension you want. Just cut a birdsmouth in a 16" 2x4 the dimension of the shim. Sandwich a 16" 2x6 on top, overlapping the birdsmouth edge, and secure with screws. Make a handle to push the jig, think hand plane handle. Grab some scrap 2x4 pieces and cut to length on your miter saw. Set your rip fence 1/32" wider than the bottom 2x4, and set your blade depth about 3/16" deeper than the bottom 2x4. The 2x6 will hold shim stock down and use your push stick to hold it against the birdsmouth. Flip the shim stock around after every cut. You can make a 5 gal pail of shims in about 10 minutes. I'd wager that if you had a bucket of shims in a handy location that you'd be reaching into it all the time. Thanks for all the great content!

I would be concerned about distance from the creek. Contamination is possible from a fuel \ oil spill, or from rainwater leaching hydrocarbon out of the sawdust. Would be a good idea to collect up that dust on a regular basis. This is why we don't float huge numbers of logs downriver anymore.

@gary_glover3 жыл бұрын
If you dont want live edge wouldn't it still take 3 cuts. One for each side to get rid of the bark edge and then a final one for the 12" side...? To get rid of the live edge wouldn't you have to rotate the log on to its side, cut, and then rotate it on to the other side and cut, b4 taking the full 12" slab cut...? Im only a professional youtube watcher with zero real experience so i could be totally wrong.
@dougberry68863 жыл бұрын
@@gary_glover you'll still have to clean up your edge. Point is you can cut something like a 20 inch cut in one pass with out dismantling the saw to make a wide cut. Just watch a Woodmizer video & you'll see the diff.

So who else thought the same? When I did read that title, I was kind of expecting something. What I got is ROFL. I guess every single lumber store owner will do the same. That board is so expensive, you could go from Alaska shopping in Florida and back and would probably safe some money compared to this. Nice video, but there are so many things done wrong here, Im at a loose where to start. So PPE for starters, working on grass with no lining up, I could go on and on. The only real justification for doing such silli things could be, because the guy has obviously losts of fun doing it. And from that (and only that) standpoint it does make sense, but doing it for the fun of it, wont scare the s word out of any lumber stors at all. So what ever, it looked like you had lots of fun, and you made my day. Thanks for the vid, please chose more sensible titles, I know you'd probably make less on KZbin, but still, also think about the life-time you waste on your viewers side.
