I mean the end of the "The Unforgiven" Dark Angels novel playes at the end of the 997-8 ; 41M years and the fall of cadia is also in that time. I can't imagine that GW just says all these events + the crusade are all doring the 999 year - just to keep it in the 40k franchise borders. The Byzantines were the surviving Roman Empire, often referred to as the Greek Roman Empire. They lasted until the Ottoman Muslims invaded Constantinople and took over the empire. The Ottomans also took over all of the holy places(churches, etc) by claiming that they had martyrs buried in them.....some very warped logic. There's much more to it but that's the gist. I encourage people to read some good scholarly(not just internet forums) sources on it sometime.
