Half Life modding is still a big thing because it's easy to jump in to. The source code for the core of the game is publicly available, builds with a single command (well not really but there's updated versions of the SDK out there), and is easy to understand while being pretty well documented, meaning if you know a bit of C++ you can make literally anything. Map editing is straightforward, easy to pick up and doesn't require you to have a compile cluster to build maps in a reasonable amount of time. Top that all off with the fact that Half Life is just a fun game to begin with and it's really not a mystery why people still mod it.

whats the thing should i know about c++ to start HL modding ?
@Nacalal2 жыл бұрын
@@qwerty-cr6po If you just want to do mapping and custom models/animations, you don't really need to know it, you can even change a lot of the in game stuff using just console commands. If you want to do stuff like custom NPCs and weapons though you will likely need to know how to write C++ to an extent. All you really NEED to know about it is how C++ syntax works and how to compile C++, after that it's mostly just learning how half life's codebase works.

As someone who's also largely a visual learner I do want to thank you for deciding to make this series.

Put my thoughts about modern mapping into words better than I could describe especially as a former Source engine modder/mapper. I also could write a book on the frustration that is Source MDL compiling workflow. GoldSrc made everything fun again and thats why I got so into it mostly modelling & texture side and made my own documentation. Video tutorials for GS mapping is a great idea and J.A.C.K has been a big boost to the mapping scene.

I'm an artist first, musician second, and tech nerd 3rd, so whenever I try to pool all my talents and skills together to make a mod, it's the super complex stuff and the coding that always keeps me from completing anything. That is until I got into the games of my teen years with my first PC and Voodoo 3 GFX card in 1998 at the wee age of 13. I started getting into making Quake 1 maps in Trenchbroom and it's been so easy and relaxing to do. I started a map last month using a variety of Makkon texture wads and Arcane Dimensions mod, it's been pretty amazing what I've been able to do, and using the Quakespasm Ironwail means I can do quite a bit with the geometry without a single hitch in the 144fps on my cheap laptop. I notice I keep making things that remind me of Half-Life, which makes me kinda wonder if I'm mapping in the wrong game, because whenever I make a map, I find myself disappointed in my enemy selection and lack of tools to create any events. I'm getting tired of just making puzzles and interesting combat encounters and arenas.

Thank you so much for making these, it's rlly helpful! I suddenly got the urge to start mapping and making mods or just viewing maps in general. I'm also a visual learner and reading big lines of text usually makes me wanna just move on to something else. Your vids are great not only very funny but also good way to explain things.

The last part of this video is funny to me because I picked up Half-Life mapping in order to make VR mods, because Goldsrc has been ported to the Quest 2, making playing mods there possible. I wanted a quick and easy tool to mock something up and play it before I'd put together a full VR game in Unity, which is why I decided on Goldsrc.

The big problem is that Valve kinda sucks at maintaining goldsrc, and refuses to let the community do it. That pushes me towards the older id games, even though I like Half Life a lot.

the level design style in goldsource is called boolean CSG editing... You can actually find some good ones that you can import into Unity.. Currently i am working on a Unity game using the Haxe programming language.. If anyone from the goldsource community wants to get into something bigger than just modding then just shoot me a message on Steam i'll help you get Unity feeling like goldsource for you steamcommunity.com/id/sneakyamxx/

that was in reference to Source SDK having broken & outdated tools at the time, whereas we have Jackhammer and all kinds of new compile tools that are far more responsive and less crash-prone However, Hammer++ now exists, so this statement is a little outdated
