Not all Marvel superheroes live in New York City, but many of them do. Compared to DC Comics where their heroes like Batman and Superman and split up across the country, Marvel's most popular characters like Spider-Man and the Avengers all operate in one location: NYC. Why did Marvel decide to do this? And why do superheroes need to fight crime in cities at all? Watch the video essay for Marvel's New York explained.
Every Wednesday, Comic Misconceptions explores the incredible stories, fascinating ideas, and mind-blowing theories regarding comic books and the rich history and culture that surrounds them!

Personally this mystifies me, logically speaking why would NYC need so many heroes to defend it from the bad guys? To me that's overkill. I like that Batman or the Bat family are the sole defenders of Gotham, that is much more believable than half of the Marvel cast living in one place. Batman in Gotham, Superman in Metropolis and Flash living in Central City give these characters their own space to develop.

I suppose what I was trying to say is that Batman standing alone to protect Gotham gives him a greater since of drama and danger, even through we know Gotham is fictional.

As a New Yorker, I like DC better because NYC these days is not how it was when Stan Lee was creating these characters. The Mob doesn't execute people in parks anymore (if they even still exist in the city), so Frank Castle's family wouldn't have been killed, therefore nullifying the Punisher. Hell's Kitchen is a hipster hellhole w/ a studio fetching a $2k avg rent per month. So, whenever anyone say they want to keep Hell's Kitchen safe in Daredevil's Netflix series, I always laugh my ass off & will never take the series seriously. Superheroes in NYC these days, would be pointless. As the city has turned into a giant, plastic, Disneyland.

@Hellslayr57

But I feel like DC's fictional cities have a better, opposite effect. With NYC, the city itself has a personality that a lot of readers already know. But by having a fictional city, and having it done well, the writers and artists can create something more iconic than a real-world city, and giving it a personality of its own. Gotham can be a city-wide crime den, dingy and full of despair, and Metropolis can be a hope-filled art deco/futuristic city bathed in constant summer. But New York will always be New York. This way, you can reflect your heroes with their home cities. Gotham can be a nest for a broody Batman, Metropolis a beloved for an upbeat Superman. But heroes in New York rarely reflect New York's unique personality. It sacrifices the poetry and art of the story for realism. Realism is fine and dandy until you have 67,000 totally different guys with the same wacky and outlandish accident origin story inhabiting the same city in which we're expected to believe that crime and corruption are still a problem.
@ruyman90
@ruyman90 7 жыл бұрын
Not only that but you can change the history of the city, who rules over it, and what it contains. For example they can put a super railroad in around all Gotham city without alienating their source while with NY it would seem odd, you can put caves, mountains, parks and anything really and it would still fit, you can say Bruce Wayne owns half Gotham or that Lex luthor owns 80% of metropolis and still be right. Not to mention that is kinda weird that almost every superhero pops out or lives in the same city (and still have crime). Is there any marvel explanation for that?
@stile8686
@stile8686 7 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Batman wouldn't be the same character without Gotham City. Place him in New York as his home and you get - something less, particularly if it is also the home of Superman and other heroes. It has been pointed out before that Gotham and Metropolis are both twisted reflections of New York, but because of that they have their own character that enhances the tales told. (As an aside, not being from the USA, whether a hero was based in Coast City or New York made very little difference to me. They all seemed like fictional cities.) Your comment about the differences between Marvel and DC heroes, realistic versus aspirational, is huge, debatable, and well worth its own video or series. Oh and DC was teaming up before the modern Marvel even existed. The Justice Society first appeared in 1940 (and incidentally combined characters from what were then three separate companies), Batman and Superman had their first meetup in 1952, and the first issue of Justice League of America was in 1960, the year before the first appearance of the Fantastic Four and the start of Stan Lee's Marvel universe.

two problems here! one: there is nothing that can be done with a fictional city that can't be done with a real world city... especially not crime or changing some historical facts! I mean, I can't imagine that the new York shows in punisher comics isn't the same O's the broody Gotham! two: alternate timelines where even a familiar city like new York can be changed into literally anything else!

Hey, here's an idea for a video... how does the power of flight work? No, seriously, a few days ago I found myself just thinking about superpowers and a lot of the pseudo scientific reasons behind them and then I realized that the power of flight makes no sense. In some instances some comic book characters like Magneto and Jean Grey use other abilities to emulate flight, Magneto uses magnetism Jean Grey can use telekinesis to a certain extent to fly through the air. Other characters like Iron Man and Angel have their own explanations for why they're able to fly and characters like Zatanna can use magic, but what about non-magical characters who simply have the power of "flight". How do they fly? Doesn't the act of flying mean something has be generating lift? And here's the thing, you can't say something like, "Oh, well their using a form of telekinesis to fly through the air," because that would be an entirely different power. How does Superman, Captain Marvel, Icon, Sentry, and a ton of other characters have the ability to fly?
@Weird_dude265
@Weird_dude265 7 жыл бұрын
The same reason the original human torch can shoot radioactive flames, captain America's shield always bounces back to him, or how the hulk or Spider-Man got their powers... pseudo-science bs. I do know that supes can create forcefields around things he touches. Maybe he's creating a forcefield around himself that enables the power of flight somehow? Theoretically if you made a forcefield around you that was lighter then air but sturdy enough to hold you, you would be able to fly. Or maybe they can subliminally create something like an anti gravity force field? Some characters generate chi and expel it through their bodies to fly. Good question.
@ebonymaw8457

Great vid! The aspect of heroes overcoming and conquering abstract concepts is one of the reasons I like comics. These kind of challenges that resonate with the human emotions really explain why superhero comics are so popular, rather than saying stuff like "it's drawn well, there is action, there are bright colours so the kids like it." That's why I like your channel as well. "Why do superheroes wear capes / Because it looks cool duh" vs "It's been inspired by this and this and that which gives a sense of power to the character etc etc"

Great video, I think one of the supporting facts that you didn't mention though, and one that might help illustrate how huge the advantage of centering the Marvel Universe in New York where the creators mostly lived and worked instead of some other city like Chicago, is that the internet didn't exist yet. The writers and artists, and in particular the artists, could mostly draw upon the sights, smells and sounds they encountered everyday in their lives in Manhattan to create the Marvel stories and many of the gaps they might have in their knowledge of the city could be filled in to a certain extent by the ubiquity of NYC in film and television. Any stories set in another city, say Washington DC, had to rely heavily on well known landmarks to present any sort of authenticity because the creators couldn't pull out their phones and look at pictures of DC architecture and because there wasn't always time to spend a day at the library finding those pictures in books. For similar reasons, the early Marvel stories stuck mostly to the island of Manhattan and wealthy suburbs (the X-Mansion in Westchester or Stark International's Long Island plant) because few of the creative staff had spent much time in say, Brooklyn. Outside of the Parker home in Queens, Marvel readers didn't visit the outer boroughs much until Steve Rogers moved to Brooklyn Heights in the 80s. On a related note, it's also no coincidence that one of the first cities outside New York that Marvel started regularly setting their stories in (Werewolf by Night, Spider-Woman, West Coast Avengers ect) was Los Angeles. Besides being the second largest city in the country, it was also the center of Hollywood and like New York, frequently seen on screen. Plus many Marvel writers ended up living and working there as they attempted to supplement their income with side jobs writing for film and television. Plus Stan Lee himself spent a big chunk of the 70s and 80s living in LA and trying to sell Marvel properties to film and television studios. Marvel staffers regularly made business trips to LA, many worked there and everyone had some sense of the place from TV and movies, so it became Marvel's second city

I'm creating my own universe of comics I plan to publish and even though I have changed the name of the city, it is not just based on a real city, but it is the real city renamed. And it's so true, I don't need to figure out the layout of it -I lived in it for many years, I just need to keep in mind the extra stuff I am adding to it. Again, great vid Aqualad & Co.!

NerdSync as another commenter said, this feels more like a documentary, its considerably more formal. Comic Misconceptions, usually feels like a conversation, albeit a very one sided, informative conversation. I chose this video to watch because I was expecting a to learn some cool stuff in a reasonably humorous way. I'd have still have clicked the video had I know it was this more produced style. No Alter Ego, no Super Suits, no Comicana, etc. The exact same videos will exist, but just not under a show name. Super Suits videos will still come out, but they won't be branded as Super Suits. I don't like having shows. I think it forces us into a box and doesn't allow us to be as creative as we'd like to be without having to create another show for every time we want to do something new and different. I don't want people to click on a video because they like the specific show on our channel. I want them to click because they either are interested in the topic regardless of how it's presented, or they simply like the videos we make. Taking away the shows and just producing general NerdSync videos can allow us to have more creative freedom and try new things without people feeling like a certain video in a series is out of place.

And it makes NYC look realistically LARGE/MASSIVE if it can be the home to THE X MEN, AVENGERS,FF4,STARK INDUSTRIES,OSCORPS,DR. STRANGE,AVENGERS MANSION,THE SANTUM SANTORUM(sorry for the miss spelling)and 100's more as opposed to DC 1 or 2 heros per city that makes their created cities seem really small and quaint.

Sammy Lane I would agree but it honestly feels like having everyone there makes everywhere else in the world seem insignificant. Also when everyone knows that a lot of hero's are stationed in New York why is there still soo much crime?With DC it feels like the hero's are protecting the world instead of a single city. Also it shows more importance when they do team up because they have to travel longer distances.

So why all in NY. Like if you need a crap ton of them to be in 1 city, then why would people want to live in a city with so many dangerous? That's like having 90% of the military in 1 city. Sure you still have 10% you can play with in other areas. But giving it is like that, then that means there is an actual reason why 90% of them are there. (something to protect, or that is where the overwhelming danger is coming from)

you could also say it's way less creative to use real cities. I've always felt like Gotham itself was like a character. having been designed from the ground up specifically for the hero that would live there. so while it can be cool that they live in a real city I also feel like it's the lazy way out of actually designing a setting for your story.

To be honest, half of the appeal to your show was you as a personality. I mean, people wouldn't keep complaining "Where's Scott?" during any of the other shows if that were not the case. This new Wisecrack-like style is really good and looks really professional, and were it any other channel or show I'd enjoy it just fine But to see it take the place of and potentially at the risk of losing the former style, it's disheartening.

It was AWESOME. Almost surreal. I really loved... well... everything in this video really. I have only one "but". I don't really feel DC's heroes are supposed to be "aspirational". Superman couldn't be more Jesus if he wanted to. The characters from DC are supposed to be Gods. New Myths created to replace the mythology North America lost with the british conquest... or so they feel, at least. They don't feel like rol models in the sense Ulyses was a rol model for the greeks, but as Zeus or Apollo were.
@NerdSyncProductions
@NerdSyncProductions 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think we disagree. Superman is absolutely a Christ figure, but wasn't Jesus meant to be a role model? AKA, "What would Jesus do?" To me, the DC characters represent characters who, for lack of better phrasing, are meant to be better than us. To show us the best that we can be. Batman is only human, but he is the peak level of human body and mind. Superman is pretty much all-powerful, but that power never corrupts him. They show us the best possible outcomes for who we can be, while Marvel shows us who we actually are.
@MrDariox555
@MrDariox555 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, but both Batman and Superman are out of reach for any human being. They aren't there to show us who can we be, but a perfect unattainable version of ourselves. That's why I used the example of Ulyses (an exceptional man, but a man at the end of the day) and Zeus (a God whose power normal beings are incapable to even understand). Just as Greek's gods, these characters have flaws and vices similar to those of men, but in a totally different scale. So are their virtues. Marvel's heroes, on the other hand, are mostly regular people. They really show us what can we become, for better or for worse. DC's heroes, just like Jesus, are characters we can only look up to and try to be like them, but knowing we will never be just like them. Marvel's Heroes can also be an inspiration, but also a warning for us all. Love them both, tho haha!
@NerdSyncProductions
@NerdSyncProductions 7 жыл бұрын
I guess it's just a matter of perspective. I personally don't see it that way, but to each his own. Yes, they are better than we can hope to achieve, and that to me only makes them more aspirational. That unattainable nature doesn't leave me thinking, "I'll never be able to be like them, so why even bother." To me, it's more like, "I'll never be able to be like them, but they inspire me to at least try to be as best as I can be." Where I see Marvel as more, "Be yourself," I see DC as more "Be better."

I recently heard this somewhere: DC heroes are gods amongst humans. Marvel heroes are just human. That sums it up quite nicely :D I'm more familiar with the DC side because I grew up with Batman and Superman. But since the MCU kicked off and I started to discover Marvel Comics, I do have to say I enjoy the more relatable Marvel heroes more. Storywise however I like the grander, more mythical scale of DC. Both editors complement each other nicely I think.

@NerdSyncProductions
@NerdSyncProductions 7 жыл бұрын
The in-universe reasons are mostly coincidental. Most characters already live in New York, so it's that simple. If they don't live in New York, they are typically a part of a team that is stationed there because one of the members lives in New York. Like Iron Man opening up his place in NY for the Avengers headquarters. Plus, it's simply a big, important city that always has crime to fight.

Honestly, we're moving in the direction of just not having shows at all, but just general NerdSync videos. I don't like having different shows because of exactly this reason. It doesn't let us experiment with our format. Viewers lock us into one style and format, which doesn't allow us to be as creative as we want to be.
@RS-ny8my
@RS-ny8my 7 жыл бұрын
I like the different shows having different formats. In my opinion, general NerdSync videos would probably hinder the variety, I think. But here's my point. If you want to experiment, just... do it, I guess. The 'viewer lock' is simply fan pressure - you don't need to change your channel fundamentally just because you want to experiment without viewers getting pissed or fan backlash. There's always going to be backlash. People like me like the different shows -> then you'll get backlash from these people. If you experiment with your format in the current state of the channel then you'll get backlash from other people. What I'm saying is, you don't need to move in any certain direction just to experiment with your format. You can experiment with your format as it is. You guys are the artists: you have free reign, what we say as your audience is ultimately opinion, so you guys should never feel like we're 'locking' you guys. Don't run into any 'perceived' barriers to creativity. So if you want to just have general NerdSync videos, great, but don't do it because you feel obliged to follow a format that you constructed. You shouldn't feel such an obligation. And if any fans feel that you do have that obligation, well, who are they to coerce you into doing anything?
