Why McLaren had to split with Daniel Ricciardo and what he wants to do next

Күн бұрын

McLaren and Daniel Ricciardo have made it official that they will go their separate ways at the end of 2022, meaning the Australian leaves the team after two years of his original three-year deal.
Confirmation of the early split brings a long-running saga to an end that looked inevitable as Ricciardo and McLaren failed to spark his 2022 season into life.
McLaren will not announce his replacement immediately, although current Alpine reserve Oscar Piastri is expected to land that seat - assuming it is cleared by the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board that McLaren, rather than Alpine, has a valid 2023 F1 contract with the Formula 2 champion.

The part about him not being a technical driver is absolutely what cost him in the end. When he first moved to Mclaren, he didn’t even do much sim work in the MTC unlike lando who was there every day trying to understand the data. He should take some lessons from sainz, who makes up for what he lacks in absolute raw talent through technical prowess
@FreddyMacT
@FreddyMacT 2 жыл бұрын
when sainz moves to new teams, he moves right next to the headquarters and spends his days with the engineers/mechanics and doing sims to get acquainted with the car. It's why he went from Renault to McLaren and then McLaren to Ferrari with little to no issues. He works hard. Daniel does not, Daniel has been living on talent but he slacks off more than most top drivers. He isn't technical, but he's also lackadaisical in his approach... it caught up to him now though.

Man's career has went downhill ever since leaving RB. Escaped from RB to avoid being a #2 driver just to be a #2 driver at a team that can't even build a championship contending car to now being ejected for the newest hot talent. This is nearing Alonso's levels of career choices.

Just competitively… if I was alpine I’d offer DR a 1 year deal with a low salary and big performance bonuses. That way you get a good deal and only 1 year if he doesn’t perform - but if he does both the team is rewarded with points etc and DR gets $ and a contract extension. Honestly though - I don’t think DR is getting on with the new cars and no team change will fix that (imo).

You can sugar coat this any way you like but Ricciardo has not been performing at McLaren over the last year and a half,so therefore McLaren had no option but to get rid of him. If he'd been performing at the same level as Norris then McLaren would have finished 3rd in 2021 and be comfortably 4th this year.
@loblolly777
@loblolly777 2 жыл бұрын
No question that DR has underperformed and I understand why McLaren needs to drop him. But if he had performed as well as Norris, McLaren would be comfortably 4th, and still a very long way off third. 2022 Norris has certainly performed much better than Ricciardo but significantly worse than 2021 Norris. A comfortable 4th is still a very long way off where Zac wanted the team to be. Lando is also underperforming and McLaren is a long way off where they should be. Change drivers all you like, but the reality is that McLaren's problems extend well beyond Danny Ric's performance and, unless there is some sneaky plan coming, changing drivers will fix little. Head of the mid field maybe, but a long way off a competitive threat to the top teams. The Piastri/Ricciardo side show is just a distraction and papering over some big cracks at McLaren.

The speed comparison chart between teammates was very interesting. He was basically faster than everyone, (even vettel) except for Max in the final two years at Red Bull. Agreed, I think the car (RBR) was just a PERFECT match for his driving style - which enabled him to win so many races. However, the sign of a great racer is being able to come to terms with changes in cars - he hasn't. Kind of like checo this season for RBR. Same thing, start of the season the car was much more normalised and generic, but as we've moved on they have made the car front bias to suit max, a well known harder driving style and look, checo has fallen off.

Danny is a good example why you shouldn't base on one seasonal change comparison, and call it a day. People saw his performance over Vettel in 2014 in a brand new car and regulations, and said, Vettel was over, and the praise for Danny was that he will be one of the all time greats. Of course, Vettel went over to Ferrari and got close to 2 titles and had plenty of racing left. Nobody thought Danny would be left behind in Mclaren like this, but I guess sometimes it's just the wrong synergy, wrong car, and wrong team. Put him in a top 3 team and he'd be a title contender again probably.

@@KeenJT And yet, it's easy to see over the past 15 years, that 'great racers' don't always 'come to terms' with just any car. Alonso? 2 WDC, then struggled with all sorts of uncompetitive cars. Vettel? 4 WDC, then the same problem Hamilton? 1WDC, then years of 'not coming to terms' with the cars that McLaren had for him, and when he move to Mercedes, all of a sudden, he's magically able to 'come to terms' with a different team's car? No; in today's racing climate, the fine mesh of the right driver and the right car are all important to a successful paring. Some very short memories in the comment section, there were very clear reasons for DR to leave RB and Renault. RB dropped the ball with DR in his last two seasons with him, he should have won more races but they were too pre-occupied with MV as #1. DR leaving RB and RB's failure to find a good replacement has forced RB to change how they treat the 2nd driver. Renault were not sure if they would even continue in F1, so hard to complain about a driver finding a ride elsewhere.

Lets not forget how these guys have been treating this matter and even made it very clear in their ratings on the first races. Ocon however may be a problem.. he is competitive and eager to be nr1. Sure Norris is doing well in the car (as he should after being in the team for 5 years and this is the only F1 team he has ever known), but people need to stop assuming that if you have a bad time at Mclaren means youre done for, refer to Alonso (2x), Button, Vandorne, Hamilton, Magnussen, Perez, Sainz and now Ricciardo. All of these people have either left Mclaren or been dismissed by Mclaren in the last 10ish years. And for all those names, only 1 has won a race for Mclaren, Mr DR.

What a lot of the below comments reflect is that Danny Ric is the biggest problem at McLaren. Instead, you all should be utterly disturbed with the team right to the very top. This is a team that gets it wrong more than it gets it right. The fact they even hired Danny shows a lack of research, but then again, this is a under performing mid pack team that has failed, no matter what engine is in the back of the car. Alpine is smashing them right now. Danny Ric is part of the problem, he should never have joined McLaren, but it would be good to call out the McLaren leadership on a disaster year.

Imo I think Riccardo thought he was better than he really was. Yes he occasionally matched Verstappen but he switched to Renault for the money but even there is struggled for the first year. Similar to McLaren which shows that unless that car really suits his style he can't drive fast enough. The move to McLaren was always a shocker to me since he finally getting is mojo back at Renault only to jump ship again. He's lucky enough to have a big fan base but if anyone who went to a Top 4/5 team as the known no.1 driver and get his ass beaten by the much younger inexperienced team mate, well we known how embarassing that can be. An area not mention about DR is has had always been in a Renault powered car, which would be much different in drivability compared to the McLaren Merc engine. McLaren have always been a team based on technical understanding and development not about raw and natural. Only a few top drivers ever get it right in their whole career. DR is not very good at adapting to the constant changes required throughout an F1 season to the maximum. Alonso is one of the best at doing this. To be top 3 you need to adapt even if it’s not to your liking.

I think Ricciardo made a mistake leaving Red Bull when he felt threatened by Verstappen. He should have stayed, as Christian Horner wanted so much, and faced MV like a mature man. I believe he would have, at least, improved significantly as a driver with the challenge of having a super fast teammate, but he chose the path of least resistance at Renault, a comfort zone of sorts that made him softer, and in the process, he got distracted with entertaining theatrics like the disgusting habit of drinking champagne from a sweaty shoe, or dressing up like a cowboy, and divorced himself from his natural talent of driving. Then came along another super fast young driver as a teammate, and this time he left the team not as his choice. Sorry to say, Ricciardo dug his own grave, but at least he cashed up significantly during his depressing downfall. Now we are all thrilled with the new McLaren pair of Norris and Piastri, and in the end of the day everyone, but Daniel is profiting from this mess.

The problem seems to be that if things aren't working, he seems to lack the ability and understanding to use the technical analysis all the drivers get to adapt and stay faster than his teammate. Very frustrating. He seemed a perfect fit for the new generation of McLaren, which to me was a racing team again rather than the technology business it became under Dennis. I think McLaren really worked to make this work, too. Perhaps DR really is better suited to a series like Indy where the focus on racing rather than insanely fine margins plays to his natural talents.

I don’t think any other driver has ever changed teams to a completely opposite style of car and got on well the first year. The difference in year two is that he doesn’t have the technical understanding that Vettel has to adapt. Doesn’t mean he’s a bad driver at all, imagine if you put Norris in the rb16b. He’d be spinning with the back end holding most of the strengths in the car. If anything this experience for ricciardo will make him faster next season if he races for alpine since he already has a fair amount of understanding for what he might need to do and won’t need to try as hard to adjust. Gasly got wrapped up in the technical aspect of his racing, which is why he was so bad at Red Bull. Ricciardo was forced into doing the same because of his racecraft, so in reality it probably isn’t just because he’s better with a completely different car-it’s a mental game he will never win. Anyone who thinks he doesn’t have it anymore is dead wrong, and I question your understanding of drivers’ preferred car strengths as a whole if you think that isn’t the main reason he struggles so much.

Ricciardo's going to Haas to replace Schumacher and Alpine should stick to the program and bring up an Academy driver. Why repeat the same mistake? NOT doing that is what got Alpine in this mess in the first place by signing BOTH Ocon from Mercedes and Alonso from retirement. What sense did it make for Piastri to wait, given that none of the current Alpine F1 drivers were ever Alpine Academy drivers?

Why kick out Mick? He's been decent, plus costs a whole lot less than Mclaren

@Nic B is Mick slacking 4 times harder than his teammate?

@Nic B I don't actually like either of them but Gunther's been talking to Danny Ric and he's already driven for Alpine once already. It's all but a done deal according to the rumor mill. Mick's out and Ric's in! 😆

@Nic B okay let's make it even more clear. Mick is keeping up with his teammate, the highest finishes are identical. Mick has 12 points, only 7 points behind Daniel in a much slower car with much less experience. Mick is younger and adaptable, and costs 10x less

I made the prediction on a video last year that his career at McLaren would be a failure and overall think he’s an overrated driver (despite how great of a person he seems to be). Fast forward a couple days from then and he won at Monza and everyone said I should eat my words. I’m really glad to be able to say now that I was right.

@James Norelli It astounds me how many chances everyone gives this dude. He’ll be force retired due to poor performance and people will still be saying stuff like this. How many teams and years is it gonna take before people realize he’s washed up?

Ricciardo's career went way worse since leaving Red Bull in 2019. Thats what i call leaving the hell hole only to get into another doom hole.
